Hi, as a synthetic chemist, I decided to look into basics of UV spectroscopy. The thing I got stuck with is the enrrgy of a specific transition (for d3 octahedral ion - due to Td-Oh and electron-hole expansions can be generalized to some other configurations):
- For a d³ ion in an octahedral field, my CFSE calculations (with respect to the ⁴F "free ion" ground term) give:
- ⁴A₂g: -1.2Δoct
- ⁴T₂g: -0.2Δoct (so, the ⁴F → ⁴T₂g gap is 1.0Δoct)
- (F)⁴T₁g: +0.8Δoct (2*0.6Δoct-1*0.4Δoct=0.8Δoct).
For the (F)⁴T₁g state, however, the correct value is +0.6Δoct (I checked a handful of textbooks but could not find an explanation. Note that the electron repulsion term x should not be relevant as it is explicitly treated in the next step and the final energy of the ⁴T₁g state is 0.6Δoct-x. (the d3 octahedral Orgel diagram from Housecroft, C. E.; Sharpe, A. G. Inorganic Chemistry, 4th ed.; Pearson: Harlow, England, 2012, p695 with a few notes is attached) Am I missing something?

Myself, Dr Michael Crilly and Dr Georgiana Varna are currently engaged in developing and deploying a series of practical, urban design, experiments in the North East of England. We are doing this because we believe we can learn a great deal about how urban spaces should evolve by 'doing' as well as by observing. This approach builds on our previous efforts (Oswell & Varna, 2024, Varna & Oswell, 2023; Varna & Oswell, 2021); but we would be very interested to hear the views of colleagues, not only on how we we are planning to carry out this work, but also how they use processes of experimental urbanism if they are engaged in it themselves.
Question: Cassiterite is tetragonal and orthorhombic. Now, I have found a different cassiterite with maybe monoclinic crystal symmetry. The poster by Drivenes et al. (2018) shows no Raman data. Has someone obtained such one in the meantime? I am very interested in such.

I want to get a scholarship at a good university in England and wanted to know the most common questions that may be directed to me during an interview to be considered as a student in that university.
What is your experience as the author of a research monograph or scholarly book published in the United Kingdom and of a similar publication in the United States?
If you had to choose between being the author of a book published in England or the author of a book published in the United States, which would you choose?
What are the advantages (or disadvantages) of publishing a book-length work in any nation with which you have had a pleasant (or unpleasant) experience?
Dear researchers,
Recently I and my colleagues had a discussion regarding the quality of PhD research works in UK and Australia. We had different opinions regarding the statements, and I would like to leave this discussion into researchgate, because it would help me to advice my undergraduate students regarding the best possible country for undertaking thier PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering, among UK and Australia.
Your opinions are welcomed.
I am haphazardly filling a few gaps in my knowledge of British history and I am currently reading Trevelyan's England Under the Stuarts because his name often came up when I overheard my friends who were history students talking about Cromwell, the Restoration, etc. However, I am finding his inflated writing style rather challenging. I find that his "literary" prose tends to get in the way of clarity: one needs to already know the general facts in order to figure out what he is saying.
Antibodies with alloimmune reactivity are likely to be present in the plasma of the multiparous women. It include antibodies to human neutrophil antigens (HNA) or to human leukocyte antigens (HLA) that could be detrimental to recipients who have the corresponding antigens, which is passively transferred during transfusion, as specified in the report of National Library of Medicine (2012). What is the likelihood of having blood transfusion related reactions from implicated donors, especially multiparous women?

I have around 50 monitoring devices measuring CO2 in different buildings across England. Occasionally the hourly average readings fall below 400ppm. I know there will be drift/ calibration errors in some of these, but is there a lower limit on what is accepted as a reasonable CO2 level. Similarly, outdoor CO2 has a global average just above 400ppm, but as this is an average, is there an acceptable lower limit below 400ppm?
Respected Respondent,
The questionnaire link
attached below is part of my research work of my MSc Construction Project Management degree from University of South Wales, United Kingdom.
The questions are asked in order to know the significance level of factors impeding
the use of modular or offsite construction in England. Your experience shared
through this questionnaire would certainly play a vital role in this research
for designing strategies for sustainable construction.

I am an MSc student studying Maritime Operations Management at Liverpool Johns Moores University. I am presently conducting a research project in assessing the impact of Brexit. The overall aim of this dissertation is to assess the impact of Brexit on ports in England. In order to achieve the research aim, this questionnaire is designed to be completed by experts who are working in the Maritime Industry or in the ports of England.
All the questionnaires answered will not be kept in any record, therefore, the responses will remain confidential only to be used by the researcher for the sole purpose of this reason only. It takes around 5 minutes to answer the questions.
Please send me a message if you have any question.
Thank you, I really appreciate your support.
Hello, I'm conducting an educational study for a master degree to examine the burnout level of registered nurses in North-East England, which includes the counties of Tyne and Wear, County Durham, Northumberland and a small part of North Yorkshire.
To be more specific, registered nurses in Newcastle upon Tyne, Sunderland, Durham, Gateshead, Darlington, Middlesbrough, Stockton-on-Tees and Hartlepool are eligible to take part in this study. We are urgently finding these people. If you are eligible, please click the link below. Your participation is really important to the study!

The least of our expected sample number is 92, but until now there are only about 10 respondents. Please help me if you are eligible to participate, or you can do me a favour to pass on the link to nurses in these areas you know. Thank you so much for any of your help!
If you have any research need to recruit participants, feel free to ask me for help as long as I can do. Thank you again.
HYPOTHETICALLY SPEAKING: Two of the recent mutations in the SARS-CoV-2, one in England and one in South Africa. The question is "Do England and South Africa both have GoF Research labs operating?" If they do, and I suspect that is very likely, does this not indicate the danger, even from suspicion; of the escape of an enhanced pathogen? How can this be controlled, that is the huge economic incentive to suddenly have to produce a whole new vaccine, and if you already have the sequence then time is greatly in your favor? There must be some controls be put into place. Thank you.

Are there scientific evidence and studies on why do some people seem not to care at all about spreading the virus to others, and how many they may be?

Hi everyone,
I am a final year, undergraduate student studying at the University of Brighton and currently undergoing my final year project.
My project is on "supplementary feeding and garden bird health" and I am looking for people ages 18 or over, within the UK, to complete my survey. My survey is looking to compare the feeding practices and attitudes towards garden bird health between people who feed birds and those who do not feed birds.
It should take no longer than 5 minutes to complete and I would be hugely grateful for your time taken to complete my survey.
The link to my survey is https://brighton.onlinesurveys.ac.uk/supplementary-feeding-and-garden-bird-health
Please feel free to leave any questions in the discussion below.
Thank you!

Thanks,
Reports from Britain and South Africa of new coronavirus strains that seem to spread more easily are causing alarm, but virologists say it’s unclear if that’s the case or whether they pose any concern for vaccines or cause more severe disease.
On Saturday, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced new restrictions because of the new strain, and several European Union countries banned or limited some flights from the U.K. to try to limit any spread.
Here’s what is known about the situation:
* Health experts in the U.K. and U.S. said the strain seems to infect more easily than others, but there is no evidence yet it is more deadly.
* Patrick Vallance, the British government’s chief scientific adviser, said that the strain “moves fast and is becoming the dominant variant,” causing over 60% of infections in London by December.
* The strain is also concerning because it has so many mutations — nearly two dozen — and some are on the spiky protein that the virus uses to attach to and infect cells. That spike is what current vaccines target.
* “I’m worried about this, for sure,” but it’s too soon to know how important it ultimately will prove to be, said Dr. Ravi Gupta, who studies viruses at the University of Cambridge in England. He and other researchers posted a report of it on a website scientists use to quickly share developments, but the paper has not been formally reviewed or published in a journal.
What about this stage, have we returned to square one in the face of the epidemic?
At a time when the United Kingdom is trying to solve the emerging coronavirus crisis and find mechanisms to distribute vaccines, a new strain of the epidemic was discovered in the country, which is believed to be the cause of the rapid spread of infection in the southeast of England, coinciding with tightening restrictions on millions of people in London.

Having obtained my BA in English Literature from Iran and my MA in Modern Literature from the University of York, I am about to begin my PhD studies in the same field in England next year. Thus I intend to fully consolidate my knowledge in English grammar so that I would not face any big issues in grammar when I write papers for peer-reviewed journals.
My professors in the UK used to tell me it is not noticeable that I am Iranian when I speak English, but it becomes so when I write in English.
I would be extremely grateful!
I'm currently producing my final year dissertation which is investigating the impacts of sea-level rise on salt marshes of the south coast of England, namely in the Solent region.
I've managed to find saltmarsh extent from the Environment Agency which I've layered onto a map but I'm struggling to find any sea-level rise tools or data specific to the region that I can use to map projected sea-level rise?
Any help would be great!

Dear colleagues,
maybe someone of you works or worked with Mixer torque rheometer - MTR manufactured by Caleva, Dorset, England. I mean the first MTR model which had analog display and pointer.
Does it start after pushing the power button? Or does this model need any software? This is not MTR3, which as far as I know needs the software, this is the older model, which even seems not to have any RS232 connection, only LPT for a printer. I would be grateful for any tips, as I have not the manual.
Thank you in advance.
I would like to deploy data loggers in the field and need one which could survive heavy rains as we can have here in the south west of England. Any advices and opinions on loggers you have used in the past and were satisfied about, will be much appreciated. Thanks

For the first time, a member state has left the European Union. This situation is considered as EU-oriented. What kind of problems the European Union will face after Brexit is being evaluated. But I think it would be useful to look at Brexit with a focus on England.
How has this emergence of England affected neo-functionalist theory? How did this move of England affect a desired integrity like European Union citizenship? How was Europe's common discourse on history, culture and values influenced? What is the future for Europe's security? How will the European economy and trade and the same issues be affected in the UK context? Given the US ties to Britain, is the EU's dream of integration at stake? I asked some of the questions unilaterally, but you can answer as you wish. Thank you.

As a patient, I have questioned why it is so difficult to engage with NHS locally when we aren't able to access services that the NHS provides to other NHS England areas. Am told that is because the population is deemed to be healthier. But this is just because it is one of richest areas in UK, therefore a higher % make use of private medical care.
So why are those patients who come from lower-income households penalised by not being able to access medical care that is freely available in other areas?
Dear colleagues,
At this time, I am looking for a supervisor who has a vacant PhD position in the field of power electronics and its application in power system.
I will be thankful if any of you introduces me one position in Canada, Australia, or Europe (except England).
For more information, my CV is attached to this question.
Thank you in advance.

I am comparing two geographical areas of different levels of social capital in Britain. I found some database to do the comparison, but the areas are different in several terms. first, one area is from the north west of England and the other one is from midlands. the two areas are different in terms of size, population, type of economy, and service sector. my question is, do these indicators should be the same to do my comparative study. for example, should the areas be similar of population?

Prions does not respond to our usual biological laws. For example, their exponential way of reproduction 1 prion+1 prion= 4 prions. They are almost undestructible. As far they first showed up in England in sheep (and we can be sure it was the first time, due to the contaminant nature of the diseases it propagates) during 17th century, almost at the same time Halley comet visited our skies, I was wondering if it could be possible that outlaw, the prion, may have come from outside Earth or even outside solar system.
Newton's main occupation was alchemy research. Alchemy was forbidden and fined in England. Did the fire happened in his laboratory after he set up his theory, directly influenced by the work of 10th c. Arab physicists and scientifics such as Ibn Haytham with his "Treatise on light". But getting famous, most probably Newton didn't want anymore such a compromising reference. https://www.wikiwand.com/en/Isaac_Newton%27s_occult_studies

Slavery had a crucial economic function in the ancient world. Although wealth creation functioned on several levels production depended on slavery. In medieval times, it is possible that Anglo-Saxon England grew wealthier through the selling of slaves, besides itself enslaving others. The USA built up its wealth on African slaves, but also indenture of British subjects.
The point of this question is to re-look at ancient, early modern and present day economics through paradigms of slavery.

I am currently doing my masters thesis on factors influencing jury decision making. I am desperately looking for research participants; as fellow researchers you know that getting help from the public is challenging. If you would please take some time out of your day to help that would be wonderful. All ethics procedures have been followed of course and the research is no-risk and confidential. Thank you so much for your time
Dear all,
I am using the linkage-disequilibrium method implemented in the NeEstimator software; to compute Ne values for several fish species all collected from the same geographical area.
Fst values across the focal species are sometimes significant but relatively low: the maximum value is a 5-6% differentiation explained by sampling sites. Therefore, I wanted to estimate a "global" (~ meta-) Ne, i.e. at the total study area scale (one value per species), just to compare these Ne value between species on the area. Molecular markers are of the same nature (110 to 150 biallelic SNPs for each species, developed based on a discovery panel from the study area) but as we might expect, gene diversity varies between species, with expected heterozygosity ranging from on average 0.25 to 0.40.
So I had two questions:
(1) eventhough sub-structure might (slightly?) bias Ne estimation at the whole geographical area scale, what would you say about the relevance of comparing Ne between different species?
(2) LD-based estimation of Ne could also be biased by highly unbalanced allele frequencies (e.g., MAF for a locus very close to 0). Have you faced such an issue; and would you have any piece of advice regarding this particular feature and the resulting interpretations?
I have already consulted the following papers; which I am enclosing here if anyone is interested:
doi: 10.1002/ece3.485 (about Ne and meta-Ne estimations)
doi: 10.1111/j.1755-0998.2007.02061.x (Waples, 2008 - LDNe)
doi:10.1098/rstb.2005.1682 (Wang, 2005)
doi: 10.1007/s10592-005-9103-8 (England, 2006)
doi: 10.1007/s10592-005-9103-8 (England et al., 2005)
I could estimate Ne per sampling site or per cluster when these exist. However, I would suffer of low sample size (typically 15-40) and when giving this a try, I usually got nothing but infinite values and/or CIs.
Thank you very much for any help! :-)
Best regards,
Chrystelle

In science and in law English is becoming evermore the dominant language in the world. This is of course nothing to do with modern Britain but reflects England's past colonial influence (see attached article)
Is it not a little ironic that English as a language goes from strength to strength while England as a nation withdraws ever more as a nation of influence?
I am currently doing a literature review for my final year of psychiatric nursing. My aim is to compile all relevant literature on the prevalence causes and preventions of burnout among psychiatric nurses. I then wish to make a comparison between Ireland and England.

For a small project, I want to deflate a variable to make it easier to compare.
The data at hand is bilateral trade data from 1800 to 2010. The data was converted in (current) British pound sterling by the authors.
Now my question is whether I could as a first attempt simply deflate the series by:
Deflated Trade Series = [Total trade_t / (Price Level index in England)_t ] * 100
Is there any preferable treatment which I could apply to the data?
The method used will be estimating a gravity equation.
Note:
The dataset used is Two Centuries of Bilateral Trade and Gravity Data: 1827-2014 by Michel Fouquin & Jules Hugot (2014).
The price level data is obtained from the BoE.
I would be happy about any comment or reference.
Kind regards

I am looking to access satellite/aerial imagery for twenty sites in SE England taken during the month of April 2017 at a scale of 1:120,000 or higher. This is to identify fields in which oilseed rape is being grown. Is there a way of accessing this kind of information? Thanks in advance.
...which have some early decay in them – forest or woodland thinnings, with rabbit damage at their bases or similar i.e an opening for fungal colonisation. I will of course need to fell these trees in order to assess the transverse cross section to interpret the decay observed.
Essentially, I require the help of someone who is undertaking any removal of a homogenous set of living trees which may fit the requirements explained above (damaged near the base). I would need to be able to take and note down specific dimensions and then afterwards interpret what is seen in the cross section.
I am based in the north west of England, however, I am able to travel.
If any individuals/companies or anyone who can point me in the right direction can help out in sourcing multiple partly damaged or decayed semi-mature trees, it would be massively appreciated and of course all due acknowledgements will be given.
Thank you in advance!

I have collected dbh and height data for some mixed broadleaf plots at Alice Holt Forest, Surrey, England (mostly containing oak, ash, beech, birch, hawthorn and holly). Although I have estimated the total aboveground biomass using species specific allometric equations, I would also like to use a generalised equation to compare these too, and also a generalised equation that includes height for comparison. However, despite numerous time searching, I have not been able to find anything suitable, and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas?
Does anyone know publications, articles of this topic?

I'm looking for research regarding alcohol consumption in post-industrial or ex-mining communities. I am looking to study alcohol consumption in post-industrial communities that are currently experiencing decline/have experienced decline in South Yorkshire, England.
Mark Jayne and Gil Valentine (2010) have done a similar study in Stoke-on-Trent and in a Rural Community in Cumbria, but i struggle to find similar studies that have analysed communities such as ex-coalfield villages in Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster.
I am really interested in studying how the industry and how it's decline in areas in South Yorkshire have effected alcohol consumption and 'alcohol culture' in the area. Areas that have high unemployment, low educational prospects and poor health.
Thanks in advance for your replies.
I am interested in obtaining a full set of data as above. This relates only to England (but if trends in suicide on probation have been reported in other countries I'd be grateful for the papers). The Ministry of Justice seems happy to give the figures for the period 2006-10 (see attached) but nothing more recent. If you know how to locate such information, for the period 2010-14, please let me know.
