Hello Research Gate Community!
I am a first year Entrepreneurship Ph.D. student at Baylor and I am conducting a study on academic scientist’s intention to commercialize their research.
While a lot has been done on the topic of commercializing research, almost no one has examined it from the perspective of the scientist. Your perceptions of research commercialization matter and should be considered by university policy makers when designing the process.
I don’t think anyone likes long surveys and I know you have much more important things to do, so I designed the survey to take less than 10 minutes. If you are willing to take the survey, you can access it through the link below:
Thank you very much for the time and consideration!

P.K. Karmakar Thank you for the encouragement! Before offering my opinion I will offer a disclaimer-- the deepest understanding I have of theoretical physics research comes from a recent reading of Neil deGrasse Tyson's "Accessory to War" (while not a technical read, I highly recommend it). The book offers an interesting insight: while theoretical physicists tend to be opposed to war, their research outcomes are often first utilized by military before reaching civilian markets. To speculate on Tyson's offering: I think generally, direct commercialization is challenging. While outcomes of theoretical physics research have a multitude of application (in warfare and civilian markets), I imagine large scale development is initially very costly (due to being highly technical in nature). Military budgets, being extensive and widely unchecked, allow for far more spending on prototyping/developing these technologies than what civilian industry can achieve. I suspect many outcomes of theoretical physics research undergo initial development in a military setting, later transitioning to civilian markets after this process has reduced development costs for businesses. That said, I am sure there are exceptions-- I am just unfamiliar with them. I hope my answer is helpful. If you know of any cases of outcomes going from lab to civilian markets, please do not hesitate to share. I would love to learn more about direct commercialization of theoretical physics research! Thanks again for your comments.

Hi everyone,
I am developing a shell element model for a concrete bridge. I am currently at a stage of assigning the traffic lane UDL.
As you can see in Figure 1, the traffic lanes are unfortunately at a angle (not 90 degrees) with respect to the horizontal direction, in other words, are not in parallel with the bridge span direction.
My model is shown in Figure 2. It is already been meshed.
Can someone please give me some hints on selecting the elements that are under the traffic lanes; hence I can apply required UDL on them?
if the lanes had been perpendicular to the horizontal, I would have used NSEL,S, LOC,Z,(elevation of bridge deck) and NEL,R,LOC,Y, (coordinate of the left and right boundary of the lane), to select the elements. However, it's been difficult when the angle is not 90.
Thanks.

One should be careful to compare the design, sizing and performance of tiny lab/bench scale (EGSB) reactors operating in steady optimal conditions with that of industrial full-scale reactors operating in real world varying conditions on real wastewaters with continuously changing composition and loads.
EGSB = Expanded Granular Sludge Bed reactors require granular sludge to operate at high upflow velocities. In most real world cases, especially on high protein wastewaters (whey, lactoserum), the high-rate upflow reactors operate on a mix of granular and flocculating sludge requiring a well designed UASB/EGSB with adjustable reflux and full process controls as recommended.

I have a set of coupled ODEs:
J = mu*e*n(x)*E(x) + mu*K*T0* dn(x)/dx
and
dE(x)/dx = (e/eps)*[N_D(x) - n(x)]
These are the drift diffusion equation and Gauss's law for a unipolar N+ N N+ device. The doping profile N_D(x), the mobility mu, T0 are known. The DC current, J, is also known, as are the boundary values: n(0) = N+, N(L) = N+. I want to self consistently solve the above two equations using finite differences, but I am unsure how to go about doing so.

Science and technology are complementary to each other. The ancient humans developed technologies to survive in earth through different raw materials and tools. They didn't understand the science behind those things. No research was conducted. Everything was generated by trial and error method. Even the animals also go on the same path. I am seeking a constructive discussion regarding arrival of science and technology in human civilization. Which came first?

Science exists since the day on which universe was created. We may have found the answers to many questions related to science later. But it does not mean that it was not there before. In 1687, Newton presented his theory of universal gravitation and three laws of motion. Does it mean that law of gravity didn't exist before it was demonstrated by Newton?
Science is investigated but technology is created. In the words of Albert Einstein, “Scientists investigate that which already is; engineers create that which has never been.”
Everything can be explained by science. We have not created science, it was there before us and before everything. As per Collins English dictionary, "Technology refers to methods, systems, and devices which are the result of scientific knowledge being used for practical purposes".
So, application of science to develop new devices, systems or methods is called technology.

The development of innovation is currently one of the key production factors in developed economies.
In recent years, developed economies have created many technological, process, product, service, marketing, ecological, material and other innovations.
In some countries cooperation programs for research and R & D centers with enterprises are being developed to activate entrepreneurship and innovation of business entities.
Because in developed countries information, innovations, new technologies and entrepreneurship are considered as one of the most important factors of the country's economic development and, as a consequence, also economic growth measured, for example, by the Gross Domestic Product in subsequent years.
In addition, research and implementation works are conducted in these themes, which further underline the high level of significance of innovation, new technologies and entrepreneurship in contemporary national economies.
Clusters are created within which enterprises undertake cooperation with other business entities, with scientific, research and implementation centers, universities, public sector institutions to exchange experiences, transfer knowledge, run and develop joint research and implementation projects, including innovative technological and process solutions , research, organizational and other.
However, in order to be able to objectively verify the effectiveness of these programs to activate the level of innovation, it is necessary to periodically perform a precise measurement of changes in the level of innovation in geographical, local, national, in relation to individual departments, sectors of the national economy or by examining specific types of business entities, companies and corporations.
Because innovation is determinant of economic development of a qualitative nature, it is difficult to measure.
In connection with the above, I would like to ask you the following question: How is the level of innovation most often measured in your country?
Are they carried out periodically, eg surveys among management, among managers of companies and corporations, or other methods, are periodical changes in the level of innovation in specific types of business entities or in individual sectors of the national economy?
Do you have specific quantitative measures developed that can be helpful in measuring innovation?
Please, answer, comments. I invite you to the discussion.

There are many fake journals that you can pay and then they publish your research even it is not worth to be published. So there are many fake citations for some research works. Also there are published papers with a team of authors that they have a pact to put their name in each other's papers even they don't have any idea about the subject of the paper. It means they cite many irrelevant papers to a research. That's sometimes one cannot trust these citations criterias. Ofc there are high quality journals too. But in general could we say a research is high qualified based on its citations number? What's your suggestion to distinguish a good research from a bad research?

What do you think of some universities in which a Master in Engineering cannot teach to students of the master's degree in Engineering? ¿Is necessary a Phd in order to teach such students?
Relevant answer
Answer
This also depends on the field and the discipline‘s accreditation rules. In Nursing, there weren’t many doctoral programs until the last 10-15 years. The masters degree was the terminal degree, therefore all masters students were taught by masters faculty.
Now we have doctoral programs, but masters degreed faculty are still allowed to teach masters students if the school of nursing cannot hire enough doctoral prepared faculty. I taught masters students with a masters degree for several years before obtaining my PhD. As several of you have pointed out, the experience of the teacher counts too.

I am trying to measure the toughness of leaves. I have rigged up a system where I put a leaf on a cube of agar (15g agar per liter water) and drop an empty syringe with a piece of wire (not a needle) through a tube to puncture the leaf. Unfortunately, the weight of the empty syringe is sufficient to penetrate the leaf so I figured a tougher leaf would cause the wire to enter the agar less, thus making a shallower hole. Is there an equation to relate the force required to puncture the leaf to the amount of slowing the leaf exerts on the wire? I also don't know if the difference will be perceptible and perhaps I should find a lighter puncture object

I am looking for literature to aid me with the explanation and discussion of experimental results (saturated pool boiling of water at atmospheric pressure on copper surfaces) where a shift of the boiling curve towards lower superheats and a decrease of CHF were recorded; this trend was noted after the first onset of CHF. I am interested in literature that deals with the change of both the boiling process and surface characteristics (wettability, topography, chemistry etc.) after the first onset of CHF. Also, any literature about the (possible) shift of the boiling curve in repeated experiments on the same surface (as a consequence of CHF onset and transition to film boiling, where possible low-temperature annealing occurs) would be most welcome. So far, a search lasting several hours yielded no results.

This sentence is true? When operating at stoichiometric conditions, possibility of knocking is lower, so it is not necessary to use the highest fuel octane number.
I think If an engine runs at richer or leaner conditions, higher octane number is required due to lower flame speed.?

Fuel Octane number for gasoline fuel or SI engine's application. The Octane number refer to Ignition quality of the fuel. Normally Octane number varies from 90 to 120 sometimes minimum 95. The advent of general purpose computing on GPUs makes it important to understand when GPUs are preferable to conventional, multicore CPUs. As new parallel computing platforms such as GPUs and multicore CPUs have come to dominate the market, it also becomes important to revisit parallel programming models and to find the best balance between programming convenience and hardware implementation costs.
How can you investigate application of GPUs to accelerate existing bespoke CFD solvers that has been developed and to benchmark its performance to solve complex fluid flow problems?

ANSYS has a good Multiphysics capabilities. I did a structural-thermal-electrical analysis in conjunction with CDF analysis. However I don't know much about electro magnetic simulation. A few Multiphysics elements are available in WB that you can have degrees of freedom in different physics. In addition to that, there is methode called "Load Transfer" that you can you use. Basically you Perform a simulation in a physic and then transfer the result to another physic. You need to identify which method is the best in your application based on a lot of parameters such as complexity, computational resources, time and etc. Hope this information helps.

Our Civil Engineering programme started since last year a fully PBL curriculum. Each semester we collaborate with real clients (Municipalities, companies, etc.) who provide a real complex problem to solve. Students must develop an innovative solution and to present it in various phases to clients and lecturers. All the theoretical knowledge provided is used within the project. The design approach is based on research principles. We have a very positive experience so far. Students are very involved and they seem developing a deeper understanding of the topics when they apply them to real case studies. We measured also a substantial increase in their satisfaction towards our study programme. Without any doubt, the PBL curriculum is working for us.

Since control system is prevalent in everywhere naturally, best approach is to show the real life examples to students and make them understand how control system is the key for stability of the universe, For example, we making sure of the right temperature of water before shower, etc.
When we talk about control system, stability is key concept. So, once the appreciation of real life day to day activitiy is made, then slowly the context can then be moved into more technical examples. Then maths can be introduced to explain various concepts and how stability is ensured for various control theory, such as while designing a controller.
When I studied control systems for the first time, i got overwhelmed with theories. It was only after many many years, everything just started to make so much sense and thus found control systems a fascinating topic.

5) As scholars, we represent the voice of reason and civility. This is not like some other type of social media platform where people come to troll or hide behind anonymity to say less desirable things.
6) Whatever you put on here is a form of intellectual footprint. “We have not come to curse the darkness but to light the candle of hope” – to use the words of President Kennedy. Let us be supportive, render courtesy to each other, promote peace and freedom (Lehrfreiheit and Lernfreiheit) and most importantly, let us be eager to learn in humility because we are ever discovering how much we don’t know. Let’s try to keep the highest standards of professionalism and brotherhood/sisterhood in a world that has become so divisive and polarized.
7) Here, castes dissolve and sense of superiority due to one’s financial situation or country of origin doesn’t matter. Each one is a mere mortal trying to earn a living and at the same time doing their bit to contribute to the global sustainability. What counts is how much you are able to give to this community and the world, not how much you can gain. We can always report extreme cases to RG.
This is my little contribution to your question.

A facilitator is someone who engages in facilitation—any activity that makes a social process easy or easier. A facilitator often helps a group of people to understand their common objectives and assists them to plan how to achieve these objectives; in doing so, the facilitator remains "neutral", meaning he/she does not take a particular position in the discussion.[1] Some facilitator tools will try to assist the group in achieving a consensus on any disagreements that preexist or emerge in the meeting so that it has a strong basis for future action. (Wikiped)
Relevant answer
Answer
... One more comment, Rudi. A facilitator acts on two orthogonal dimensions question (Q) and solution (S). In "steady state" the facilitator keeps staying in the Q, asking questions and by doing so facilitating the audience to reflect, solve issues and provide answers with no external intervention. In the case the audience asks the facilitator for his/her opinion on a specific issue then the facilitator may switch momentary to S and then returning to Q. Staying in Q is exactly what you call "being neutral".

The carotid shunt is made up of a tube on the extremities of which the balloons are glued during the manufacturing process. Quality control (functionality test) are carried out in order to ensure that the product is conform. It has to be ensured that the balloons suffer no leaks.
What are the possible quality control test (non-destructive) that can be put in place after the assembly process to ensure conformity of the product ?
Relevant answer
Answer
I tend to agree with Dr. Garry. During manufacture every 10th product should be tested by a competent technician, inflating the balloons to the recommended volume and seeing that they hold the air for a few hours.
Prior to actual use in surgery, the surgeon should make sure that he/she repeats the testing. Only this time it will only be for a few minutes. And it always pays to have a back-up Pruitt-Inahara shunt in the room.

Two nozzles of different output diameters (0.20 mm and 0.25 mm) are being used to take mass measurements for an analysis over a time period for the same input pressure.
It has been observed that the standard deviation in the measurements increases in with an increase in diameter of the nozzle.
Is this true? Does an increase in diameter causes greater fluctuations in the flow for the same input pressure?
Relevant answer
Answer
You can consider two parameters:
1) the mass flow rate, if it is taken constant an increase in the diameter causes a diminishing averaged velocity.
2) the Reynolds number, if the averaged velocity is taken constant the Re number increases. From 0.20 to 0.25 you are increasing the 25% and the Re number can be such that transition to turbulence can occur,

What are the problems encountered with carotid shunts that are used in carotid endarterectomy and their possible solutions?
Relevant answer
Answer
The answer above is incorrect....firstly the overall flow through a carotid shunt is quite small, and secondly,it is only performing the job of the native artery, bypassing it whilst the carotid is clamped and operated upon.
The real issues with carotid shunts are as follows:
1.Decision making process in inserting a shunt may take time, and in some cases may be incorrect, thus relying on good perioperative techniques for measuring or quantifying adequate cerebral blood flow such as TCD and INVOS.
2.Inserting the shunt into the carotid artery can result in dislodging plaque material distally during insertion,or occasionally dissection.
3.The shunt can be placed too far down into the common carotid, and may enter the subclavian origin and occlude flow to the arm,or lose flow through the shunt.
4.The shunt can be dislodged or blown out of the artery, neccesitating reclamping and replacement, with all of the above risk factors.
5.The shunt can interfere with visualising the operation site and may impede surgery to a small degree.
In short,if there is a lack of adequate monitoring of cerebral perfusion,a shunt can be thought of as mandatory by many, but if there is reliable and validated cerebral monitoring(such as INVOS or TCD),then shunting should only be performed where indicated.
Hope that helps.

If we talk about the necessity of equipping contemporary engineers, functioning in the “Industry 4.0” and/or creating for the members of “e-society” practical conditions of being and acting and also equipping non-engineers in a (which one?) set of technical knowledge and competencies, the evident problem appears: is there a balance between the amount of non-technical knowledge and competencies of an engineer and the amount of technical knowledge and competencies of non-engineers if we expect the our “e-world” will function properly (according to expectations)?
Relevant answer
Answer
E-society is a society that consists of one or more e-Communities involved in the areas from e-Government, e-Democracy, and e-Business to e-Learning and e-Health, that use information and communication technologies (ICT) in order to achieve a common interests and goals.
The first areas of e-society that emerged were e-Learning and e-Business.
The development of e-Society is relying and depending on the development of virtual reality (VR) technologies that insure interaction between participants of an e-Society in a more acceptable and tangible way.
The development of (VR) and consequently the e-Society is based on improvement and balancing of participants’ interaction methods, hardware necessary for such interaction, content presentation and effort required for development and maintenance.

I researched two highly cited journals publications (2017-2018) and observed that more than 55% papers on very specific research topics are published by 13 research groups from 5 countries. Is really only 13 research groups are capable for the highly cited research load of the world?
Relevant answer
Answer
This is a very good question.
In my opinion, the whole process "of conducting research, publishing it, and citing" is moving towards being more politicized. They may call it globalization but, apparently, this is a sort of colonization in which research endeavor in certain areas cannot progress unless it follows the lead of specific groups in other "far" countries. This way, the "masters" can be sure that they stay at the top while the others lag behind.
The story is much longer with many details... a good follow-up is required for writing a "review" or a "book" on this subject & the researcher can support it with statistics & figures.

Occluded hydrogen has proven effective to remove the CO that anchor on the metal surface. This has been done on Palladium metal. One of the problems is that the treatment with hydrogen distror and ultimately destroy the metallic matrix. Thus, the non-poisoning effect is loss. However, palladium alloys does not suffer such distortion. No wonder palladium alloys electrocatalyst has shown this non-poisoning effect [JES, 149 (2002) A1400]. What do you think?

Glue is discharged from a syringe tip at a constant pressure P through a constant time period t.
The original tip is of diameter d1= 0.20 mm. A new tip is used of diameter d2 = 0.25 mm.
Considering only the tip of the syringe i.e. constant length and constant diameter, does the flow rate (be it mass flow rate or volumetric flow rate) decrease with the new tip for P and t ?
Relevant answer
Answer
For an increased diameter and constant pressure, the volume flow of your fluid should be increased significantly. This is actually quite easy to calculate for newtonian fluids. However, as you describe your fluid as "glue", it may have all sorts of strange properties.

Accuracy assessment of thematic map is often performed using groung truth sample points, generated randomly. There are techniques to evaluate the appropriate number of sample points. However, since those observation are "local", I have the strong feeling this strategy might fail to detect severe spatial inaccuracies (i.e, checking the accuracy of detected contours of different land cover patches obtained as a result of supervised classification).
As such, I was wondering how transect lines can help here. Since they provide a continuous information along a line over the mapped area, I was wondering how thematic accuracy can be assessed this way ? I came accross an interesting read (Skidmore, A. K., & Turner, B. J. (1992). Map accuracy assessment using line intersect sampling. Photogrammetric Engineering and Remote Sensing, 58, 1453-1453), however I missed some important details and could not be able to apply the method described in the paper correctly.
Any thoughts ?
