Hi All,
Literary academics who work with me have been expressing growing interest in ethnic writers who write original stories in modern-day, British English (as opposed to their local simplified/broken versions). I have the starting draft of my potential paper The Mis-representation of Ethnic Cultures in Modern Literature. Please share ideas and good reads in this discussion, and express your interest in co-authoring with me. Some of my colleagues say the authors we shall be quoting will also have the opportunity for their books to be made into film. On the other hand, there is a lawyer in my group who would be using the the paper to sue authors that misrepresent ethnic tribes, to pump any dollars charged back into the tribe. Please say something.

In Chinua Achebe's 'Things Fall Apart', Okonkwo beats his wife in one occasion - for destroying a banana tree. How would this influence your trust to give the hand of your European (or westernised) daughter to a man from Umofia (or Ambanta). Are human beings becoming too sensitive nowadays, even to the depiction of cultures in fiction? If you were Achebe and alive nowadays, and you've just been watching a youtube wedding which failed or was almost called off due to a scene in your novel, what would you do? 1. Make a video to explain that it was only fiction (though Achebe himself once wrote severally that his aim was to make the story as realistic and convincing as possible); 2. Use the proceeds of the book to sponsor a cultural group in Umofia (or Ambanta) which portrayed their men as kind and respectful to women? 3. Both. If you were the father of a groom whose marriage was affected, would you sue Achebe (if he were still alive)?<--- This topic will be in our paper.

POLITICAL CARTOONS
Caricatures are probably the oldest form of pictorial humor, where caricare in Latin means “to overload, or exaggerate.”
The main stylistic devices here are distortion and exaggeration, and the main subject, famous people.
The term Cartoon originally comes from the Italian word ‘cartone’ and means a strong, heavy paper or pasteboard. It denotes a full-size drawing made on paper as a study for further drawings, such as a painting or tapestry.
Punch applied the term to satirical drawings by publishing some parody drafts for frescoes (also called cartoons) and making the term’s new meaning permanent.
A cartoonist’s craft may force them to limit their originality, because they have fewer than 10 seconds to grab the attention of viewers, and, in fact, to tell whole stories.

Dear Michael, that's the point. You did a lot. It's hard for me to take care of all.
If you are interested we may do it by a single point, the most important:
√-1
Will you hold the old definition? Or will you go the way as I did and look behind the veil? At least you may have your own opinion on that.
But not been able to see where the results of (+1)(-1) or (-1)(+1) came from, denies half the area of reasons. Most mathematicians find it too kiddy to talk about that. Let them be limited.
There are many ways to find it obscure to stop doing the exercise for square-root only by having a negative radicand.
Transforming the coordinates makes the other areas not calculable.
Martinez (negative math) introduced the inverse rule for the prefixes of products. So no definition is complete except this of holding all the prefixes of the quantities which are to combine.
If you know they were + and – => the result is + and – , not? If you don't know the way the sources were, you have to deal with absolutes and further conditions.
Riemann took `imaginary´. Will you too?

Can any one help me to know a method to recognize the type of obtained copolymer after synthesis?
Relevant answer
Answer
Dear Dr Islam
Distinguishing between different types of copolymers, such as random, block, or alternating, can often be challenging but can be achieved through a combination of techniques and analyses. Here's how you might differentiate between these copolymer types:
  1. Monomer Composition Analysis: Analyze the monomer composition of the copolymer. For a random copolymer, the monomers would be distributed randomly throughout the polymer chain. In contrast, a block copolymer would have longer sequences of one monomer followed by longer sequences of the other monomer.
  2. Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR): NMR spectroscopy can provide information about the arrangement of monomers along the polymer chain. In a random copolymer, the peaks in the NMR spectrum would be distributed randomly, whereas in a block copolymer, you would see distinct blocks of peaks corresponding to each monomer.
  3. Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC): GPC can help determine the molecular weight distribution of the copolymer. Block copolymers tend to show bimodal or multimodal distributions due to the presence of two or more distinct blocks with different molecular weights.
  4. Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC): DSC can reveal the presence of different phases in block copolymers. These copolymers may exhibit multiple glass transition temperatures or melting points corresponding to the different monomer segments.
  5. X-ray Diffraction (XRD): For some block copolymers with distinct crystalline or amorphous segments, XRD can provide information about the arrangement and packing of polymer chains, which can give insights into their block structure.
  6. Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM): TEM can directly visualize the microstructure of block copolymers, showing distinct domains or regions corresponding to each monomer segment.
  7. Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA): DMA can reveal the mechanical behavior of copolymers at different temperatures and frequencies. Block copolymers might show distinct transitions corresponding to different segments.
  8. FTIR Spectroscopy: Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy can provide information about the chemical structure of the polymer and the presence of different monomers.
  9. Morphological Observations: Block copolymers often exhibit distinct microphase-separated domains under high-resolution microscopy techniques like atomic force microscopy (AFM) or scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
  10. Reaction Conditions: Sometimes, the choice of reaction conditions during copolymerization can influence the likelihood of forming certain structures. Understanding the reaction conditions can provide insights into the copolymer's structure.

Dear All, I am submitting a draft of a book to a publisher on a common topic but very much puzzled with the plagiarism issues. How much should it be?
If we follow the UGC guidelines, what should we set the word limit or % of the similarity content in turnitin tool?
Relevant answer
Answer
According to the UGC guidelines, the maximum similarity index allowed for a book chapter or article is 10%. Thus, to avoid plagiarism issues, it is recommended that the book draft has a similarity index of less than 10% as measured by the Turnitin tool. However, it is important to note that some publishers may have their own specific guidelines on plagiarism and similarity, so it is advisable to check with the publisher about their requirements before submitting the draft. It is also recommended to properly cite all sources and give credit where credit is due to avoid plagiarism.

Adeyo Samuels has a lot of great ideas. Define your population, sample, and size. Bigger is not always better. Fewer, more indepth questions and a follow up is better.
All unstructured/semistructured interviews or first focus groups? Decide on what you want to know. All these issues go back to your aims and methodology (e.g., a grounded theory study will be vastly different than a phenomenology study, etc.)
By perceptions, what do you want to know? Look both at the COVID-education literature and the broader field.
Pilot your interview questions after carefully crafting them [can include initial analysis of the practice interview to see if you get the information you want and if questions are clear]. Consider techniques to improve the questions, such as the Delphi technique, interviewing/reviewers of outside experts, etc. Chenille has other ideas. I will review your guide if you asked.
Here could be the simple way to start. "Tell me about teaching during COVID." Then ask probing questions and inquire about best/worst experiences and "tell me more." Avoid why questions!

The question is " Is it legal and ethical to use a similar tool that classified as artificial intelligence to gather information and create ideas. this tool is able to write a full literature review about research topic within 15 mins. ""
the second question is " what will be the evaluation criteria for review article with the presence of this tool? the review article will be unworthy to be publish so we can allocate the publishing procedure for research articles only. this step will enhance the quality of research directly."

  • Sure draft genomes can be used
  • One other thing what you mentioned, physiological property can't be completely accessed by the completeness of genome. Even for many organisms with complete genome sequences, we don't know much about the functional properties.

There is no such service available at the moment. Generally, journal reviewers will not make the same comments. Nevertheless, you can obtain a opinion from your supervisor, known experts and colleagues before submission. Their opinion and comments will not guarantee that your manuscript will be accepted in a journal in first attempt. My suggestion is that you upload your draft to a relevant journal in your field of research. Learn from the cycle of submission, rejection and submission in course of time to fine tune it.

Options I've considered:
-starting my own site using Squarespace, Ghost or something similar (but these are technical and perhaps more suited to 1-person sites?).

Dear RG colleagues,
I may be somewhat old-fashioned, but please have the following golden rules on how to avoid plagiarism, especially Self-Plagiarism:
  1. Use your own words instead of copying the words of others.
  2. If you have co-authors, just trust your words.
  3. If you use your own words, then there is no need for the free tools of plagiarism. Since there is no guarantee that the original content of your manuscript might not be copied and sold to others before it is published by you, I discourage using any free-software checkers for plagiarism; some of them are betrayers. Despite that offline ones are rare and if you are insisting to use anti-plagiarism software, offline checker programs are safer than online ones.
  4. In some cases, you can paraphrase the sentences in the original document. But don't forget to write a reference.
  5. You must always insist on honesty.
  6. You must always insist on doing real research, not "Wikipedia" research.
  7. Do not put any of your research work anywhere until it is published and tagged with your name. Please wait until the paper is accepted and then published in that journal. Then, upload that research item on any platform you wish.
Finally, believe me, or not: If you make one plagiarizing, you may solve one problem and fall into many others where some of them may be described as a knockout. Again and again, please always remember that if there were accusations of plagiarism, it is not well for any researcher's reputation, in any meaning.

Hi all,
I am currently working out a PhD topic and working with tight timelines.
I am thinking of doing a research on how 'wokeness' and heightened sensitivity to racial and gender is impacting team cohesion and productivity.
Some studies have argued that having a racially diverse team for example leads to less workplace complains. I however think that this could simply be a symptom of workers doing just their bit, avoiding socialisation lest they risk being 'mistaken'.
1. Can I get some opinions regarding this area.
2. Will it be more appropriate to pick one end (Either gender or race)?
3. Can I leave this open to workers in General or narrow down to a sector e.g Care homes or Academia?
4. Could someone please help me with how such a topic would be drafted?
Please Help.

Answer
Hello Dennis Otieno re: How wokeness' and heightened sensitivity to racial... [word missing racial diversity? or do you mean racism?] and gender is impacting team cohesion and productivity
I always advise some definition of terms before plunging ahead with literature reviews and topic focus. (I am not a specialist in your topic and my comments are made with best intentions - not trying to be critical).
I see from your profile you are studying in economics and business. How are you using and defining "wokeness?"
  • Have you considered the degree to which the concept of 'woke' has been co-opted - especially by those who by definition are not and cannot be 'woke'?
  • Have you reflected on how the meaning of 'woke' has been diluted - especially by marketing and economics (woke capitalism and corporate woke) usage?
How are you using the term gender?
  • Are you referring to biological sex or are you using gender in terms of people's self identification, expression and presentation regardless of biological or assigned sex?
  • A you prepared and equipped to take on a multivariate and fluid contemporary spectrum of meaning for the term gender?
Once you clarify your thoughts on those terms then I suggest you conference with your thesis advisors(s) and map out a promiscuous literature review, not just in terms of teams (cohesion and productivity) but also in other related contexts.
Just some thoughts and best wishes,
Leo

It is stated that as per my final draft of the questionnaire, there are 9 groups making 197 comparisons comprising one full questionnaire.
It would be psychologically difficult for one person to respond to 197 comparisons at once on the spot. My question is that is it possible that I ask one or two groups or maybe three group comparisons from one person and another two or three groups’ comparisons from another person; in short 3 or 4 people will fill out one questionnaire. Is it the correct way? Is any issue will be created in the calculation of AHP?
Therefore, your valuable input is requested in this regard, an earliest response is highly appreciated.
If you have any research paper related to my question, share it, please.

Dear Hanna Mussa,
The solution to this type of problem is to submit the dissertation of the working text of the doctoral dissertation for additional consultation to the professor, who is also a specialist and authority in a given field. However, the key issue is usually the result of the evaluation of the supervisor's doctoral dissertation, i.e. the professor who, as part of the doctoral seminar or doctoral dissertation, manages the process of writing a doctoral dissertation and formulates specific guidelines in this matter for the doctoral student writing his doctoral dissertation.

I'm currently drafting my dissertation literature review which aims to solve an novel protein structure, we have some evidence of the function of this protein molecule (TCR ligand) but not completely sure. My main responsibility in the lab should be using the collected X-ray data to get the model (hopefully) and compare it to other similar molecules. May I ask what hypothesis in this situation should I construct? should I use a null hypothesis like " Protein X's structure reveals no similarity with other TCR ligands?"
Any advice would be helpful, thanks in advance!
Relevant answer
Answer
Hi Yuan,
The science behind your work should guide you.
Try to put all steps of your research in chronological order and that will be your narrative.
1. Introduction. Why these class of proteins are interesting?
How the structure can help to understand the reaction mechanism of these proteins?
2. Search for sequence homologs from different organisms (BLAST)
Identifying clusters of conserved regions.
3. Comparison (analysis) of known structures with the same function (reaction).
Identifying the active site: catalytic residues, binding pockets ...
Your research.
4. Solving the structure. Methods you used: SAD, SIRAS ...
5. Search for proteins with similar fold (DALI, VAST).
6. Structures of similar proteins (structural or sequence homologs) with ligands and comparison with your structure.
7. Conclusion. Your structure has certain similarity to known structures, or you got a completely new fold for this class of proteins.
8. Running assays and solving structures with ligands (inhibitors) as a proof of enzyme activity (original idea).
Hope this helps.
Best,
George.

Depends on at how much rate you want your water to be cooled, as the cooling rate of the tower depends on heat and mass transfer going on in packing or fills. And I think you mean to ask about selection !
  • Generally the most common packing used is hexagonal (helps in good contacting of vapour and liquid).
  • Larger the contact area higher the evaporation rate.
  • You can also use circular packing.
  • Metal packing is preffered because of higher (K) rate. (K= Thermal conductivity).

Dear Haimanot,
Yes, that's right. The key factor of economic development is the wealth of the economy and economic entities in particular categories of production factors, including production factors and / or resources enabling the offering of specific services. According to the first trend in the history of economic thought, the school of classical economics includes various resources, raw materials, processed factors of production, etc. classified under three headings: land, labor, capital, among the three key categories of production factors. However, during the 3rd technological revolution in the second half of the 20th century, the development of information technology, ICT information technologies, the development of information and other services based on these technologies, followed by the development of the Internet and other types of technologies, including Industry 4.0, technologies typical of the current fourth technological revolution ( e.g. robotics, artificial intelligence, learning machines, Internet of Things, smart technologies, cloud computing, computerized multidimensional simulation models, Blockchain etc.) this three-element classification of production factors (factors of economic growth) has proved insufficient. In the context of neoclassical trends in economic thought that have been developing since the 1970s, the growing importance of such factors of production processes as: technology, information, data, innovation, entrepreneurship is indicated. In developing economies that aspire to become rich and fully developed economies in the future, having advanced, modern technologies of production and / or offering services is a particularly important development factor. Developing economies are also often knowledge-based economies. In knowledge-based economies, new technologies are becoming one of the key factors of production, economic development and comparative advantage. First of all, information technologies and Industry 4.0. As a result, international technology transfer is sometimes deliberately restricted. On the other hand, internationally operating forms of technology significantly contribute to technology transfer through direct investment carried out in other countries. The pandemic, through the increase in the scale of digitization and internationalization of economic processes, could accelerate this kind of cross-border flow of knowledge and information regarding the methods and techniques of production processes and offering services. Moreover, the ongoing economic and information globalization is also a factor accelerating the processes of cross-border transfer of new technologies. In addition, in the face of growing global problems, such as the health crisis caused by the SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) coronavirus pandemic, the growing climate crisis caused by climate change, the progressing global warming process, more frequent droughts and forest fires, increasing environmental pollution, etc. international cooperation should be developed in order to increase the effectiveness of solving global problems of civilization development. As part of this cooperation, new eco-innovations and pro-environmental technologies should be implemented into production processes as soon as possible and should be disseminated on a global scale. The current and future climate change, the growing global climate crisis, like the pandemic, is a global problem. Therefore, solving this kind of key global problems of the development of civilization, creating new, effective instruments for solving these global problems should also be carried out at the international and global level. Therefore, new technologies that are used to solve these global problems should also be available to all countries of the world. In 2020, the SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) coronavirus pandemic caused a deep economic crisis in the economies of many countries. The scale of the crisis was very diversified depending on the branch and sector structure of the economy. In 2021, thanks to the interventionist, anti-crisis instruments of public aid offered to enterprises and companies in crisis, it was possible to quickly lead the economies out of the economic crisis of 2020. One of the important factors of anti-crisis state aid are also targeted subsidies for the implementation of new investment projects in which modern technologies are used. Efficiently applied anti-crisis programs of socio-economic policy contribute to the growth of entrepreneurship and innovation of companies, enterprises and other types of economic entities. However, on a supra-national scale, international trade wars are still waged between some of the world's major economies, and barriers to the transfer of modern technologies and the flow of production factors are still applied. Such restrictive measures contribute to a slowdown in economic development and limited availability of new technologies for developing countries. On the other hand, globally operating international corporations and the information globalization developing thanks to the Internet contribute to the dissemination of technology on an international scale.

I am currently working on creating figures for my manuscript - Due to the design of the study I chose to use GLMMs. However, I am now struggling to find some codes on how to illustrate my results. I am measuring the effects of forest degradation (continues variables) on community structure with sites as random effect.
I have used ggplot2 on my first draft, but I was advised from a reviewer to show some partial plots and also to plot the model together rather than use only singular linear regressions .
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is a draft at the moment but thinking about it for a long time. I want to see if local populations' perceived threat, stigmatising attitudes and xenophobia (IVs) is related to immigrants emotional exhaustion and isolation (DVs). In this model, IV's will be collected from local people where they live with immigrant community and DVs will be from immigrants from the same neighborhood. I know it is problematic but how should we design and test such a model in a proper way.
Relevant answer
Answer
Such a multilevel research design can be employed. However, the issue I notice is relevant to your research problem. Local people data (IV) and immigrants data (DV) should be linked in such an application, and survey data should be linked accordingly, however this seems challenging in terms of your research context.. I hope you can handle easily..

I have a medical student colleague who was recently diagnosed with a rare condition and wanted to draft a case report for publication. However, the attending physician who made the diagnosis was not interested in collaborating on the report. Considering that the patient had access to all patient files and had found other medical professionals (who were not the diagnosing physicians) to collaborate on the case report, is it OK for the patient to draft their own case report without inputs from the diagnosing physician?

Hello everyone,
I recently read an article "Pros and cons of using ICT in teaching ESL reading and writing" which is related to my current research. I would like to discuss with you my understanding and questions regarding this area as below:
1. I like the way that the authors finalized the questions with several steps such as first draft, content and face validity, second draft and so on.
2. Would you please share with me how did you decide samples if you are the author?
3. I realized the majority participants are over 30 years old. Some of them are even more than 50. I am thinking if the age will be a factor impacting the result.
It will be much appreciated that you could give me some suggestions or insights in this area.
Thanks, Ying Laura Liu

As an ESL Practitioner, I believe that technology plays an important role in language learning. We are in the era where digital softwares and applications are just a click away from both teachers and students. However, the question is are you teaching reading and writing with the machine or technology or are you using technology as a tool or aid for teaching? Thus it is critical for teachers to choose appropriate "mindtools" to aid the students in ESL learning. Moreover, having a group of participants with different age range is quite interesting. It would be great if you could do a comparative study to probe the difference if any.

Not a research paper but there was a BBC documentary a long time ago called 'How much is your body worth?'. it discussed the issues surrounding regulation of who could harvest body tissues for donations in different countries. I found this archived BBC webpage that has a partial transcript of the programme content. If you are at a UK university and have access to an online resource like Box of Broadcasts, you might be able to watch it - bear in mind it may be out of date by now! I also did a Google search and found the programme at https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x7qji9j Not a peer-reviewed paper but may give you some ideas of how to frame your arguments or make you think of other aspects you need to research. Hope this is helpful in a small way. Sorry this is late and out of date but it may still be helpful to others.

We have a residue management project running here in our station, inside this project we want to measure draft power variation due to different factors. In this case, we need to measure the power used during using the machines. I am expecting from experts around the globe working in related fields to share with me devises available to measure such a moving loads. I have heard something about moving load cells but am not clear about this as well.
Thank you!!

You do not have to measure them, you can look at the standarts of the ASABE all is there. But I already have a way of lowering the draft power by more then 50%, by rotating the tilage equipmets. I am looking for some one to cooperate in buiding them.

Our lab has been collecting longitudinal survey data on the impact of the COVID 19 pandemic on the local community. We have so far collected multiple waves of data over the past year. During our last survey administration, we inadvertently sent out a draft version of the survey to 100 people (out of 500+). We stopped the survey and then sent out the corrected final version to the remaining people. For the 100 who completed the draft survey, we invited them to complete the corrected final version. During the retake, there was a major event that happened in the locale where we were collecting data. About 50 people completed the retake before the event and the other 50 after the event.
We are trying to find past studies that have capitalized on major events happening during data collection. For this study, we are specifically wanting to find a study that has baseline data and then follow-up data completed either before or after a major event. Would anyone know of any such studies?

Now a days many researchers are depositing their research paper draft as preprint in various web-based option, those are not peer reviewed yet or may submitted already or will be submitted in a Journal. This is similar like unpublished data those many Journals discourage to cited in a paper/article. What is your opinion?
Relevant answer
For those who don't know the preprint, let us have a look at that category of articles.
A preprint is a full draft research paper that is shared publicly before it has been published or even peer-reviewed by a given journal or conference. It may have been given a digital object identifier (DOI), and, in turn, it can be cited in other research papers.
I have a different perspective for uploading any preprint anywhere before it has been published. My advice is not put any research anywhere until it is published and tagged with your name.
Why you let others know about your insights and methodologies before publication?
You may say that I am somewhat old-fashioned, but I have a different perspective for uploading any preprint anywhere before it has been published by your name. So, my advice is to not put your research anywhere until it is published.
  • Your manuscript may be copied and then published by others before you can do that. This stealing of your paper might be happening. You must wait until the paper is accepted and then published by that journal. Then, upload that research item on any platform you wish.
  • You should avoid telling the other researchers about the details of anyone of your papers until it has been published and seeing your name by yourself.
  • A journal may have automated plagiarism software to check the paper before admitting it to the reviewing process. There are chances that your paper can get a rejection at any point. Thus, to avoid this problem, don't publish the preprint until you got ACCEPTED and see that it is tagged with your name.

A methodological paper is in a draft stage and suggestions have been made to include practical/managerial implications of the new approach. What, therefore, constitutes managerial implications in a methodological paper? How does one go about writing such?
Relevant answer
Answer
You will need to explain how you methodology is relevant to the practitioners. If your methodological paper is strictly related to the actual analysis/research protocol - then you might look at how your methodological contribution could support other studies.

Vasily Grossman, the brilliant Russian writer of the Second World War, in Life and Fate and Stalingrad (Third draft) poses three clear approaches to life and fate, leaving the reader to decide which one to choose.
The characters Gardi and Mostovskoy hold that they are absolved from responsibility for their actions but for different reasons. Gardi believes in the forgiveness of God while Mostovskoy believes his actions are determined by historico-economico-political forces so all-determining as to be the equivalent of God.
Ikonnikov insists he has free will and therefore is responsible for his own actions, no matter what force he is subjected to. Ikonnikov proves his point by condemning himself to death through his refusal to construct a gas chamber for the slaughter of Jews and others.
While Ikonnikov makes a moral choice by refusing to engage in the destruction of others to save himself, do the others'' choices and perceptions leave them merely puppets?

bioRxiv, which is operated by Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, provides a free online archive and distribution service for unpublished preprints in the life sciences. Authors can post unreviewed preprints on bioRxiv, to make their findings immediately available to the scientific community and receive feedback on draft manuscripts before they are submitted to peer-reviewed journals. Are there negative aspects from preprint publication and if so what are they? How much does this help advance science and research efforts? What do you think?
Relevant answer
Answer
As a novice contributor to the scientific community, I view the preprint system partly as a temporizing solution to the flaws of the institution that is the peer review. Pressing issues of the peer review that I can think of include the "lag period" from submission to rejection or acceptance (which is partly understandable) and a relatively small number of people (each with their own biases) who decide on the publication/rejection of a paper compared to the larger population who might find the study useful for whatever reason. The COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated the need for timely information, at a rate that the conventional peer review system may likely not keep up with, hence we have seen an exponential rise of preprints recently.
The preprint system, however, seems to be a double-edged sword. At one end, it democratizes the dissemination of scholarly work, giving people absolute and timely access to the work which is otherwise impossible (due to several reasons including paywall or rejection by peer reviewers for reasons not related to ethical or severe methodological issues) and allows virtually anyone to scrutinize the work for various ends (e.g., to improve the paper or to use the information in the paper in their own decision-making).
On the other hand, preprints inherently require an elevated level of skepticism and depends highly on "good faith" by the authors. With regard to the former, unfortunately, not everyone can exercise adequate skepticism (which has led to instances such as preprints being reported in the media). With regard to the latter, it is difficult to rule out the likelihood that this mechanism will be taken advantage of by figures with malicious intent (fortunately, some preprint servers employ a screening process for this reason, although the effectiveness of that process remains to be evaluated).
All in all, I think that preprints advance good science at a greater extent than it slows it down. Nevertheless, the scientific community should strive to refine this system (maybe through development of guidelines of some sort) and the infrastructure that I think it responds to, which is the peer review.

I am using "essay assessment" as a third data type in my research. There are 80 essays: first draft and final draft.
a. In order to get a general picture of students' level of writing, should I use the final draft score only or the mean of first and final draft score?
b. Total score (Content: 6 points, Language Use: 6 points, Organization: 5 points, Punctuation: 3 points) a student can get is 20.
Should I find the percentage of each part: If a student gets 3 out of 6 for content, should I say this student gets 50 out of 100 for content? how should I show the general picture of student success?
Relevant answer
Answer
Though you are very much clear, I still have some suggestion. The difference between the two scores (Final - initial) will give you a new score which you can regard as an improvement if it is positive. You can conduct one sample t-test for each of the variable (For instance, content, style, or .....) and total score. You should use test value as zero for all the tests. If the result is positive and significant then it means there is improvement. The scale whether in numbers or percentage would not affect your analysis greatly, you can go for any of them, but I would prefer the raw scores.

Hi all!
I have sequenced a cyanobacteria genome by Illumina and I have mapped the reads to three closely related strains. In all the three, I extracted a consensus sequence, which I regard as a draft genome. Interestingly, in the three consensus sequences, gaps occur in different regions. I think that I can chop the sequences from one draft genome and fill in the gaps in the other provided that they in the same region, for example, in draft genome A the gap is from 1-200, while in B the region 1-200 is fully mapped. Is it possible to chop this sequence and fill the gap in A? If yes is there a quick and precise method or tool to do this? I am new to command line inter-phase, I usually use Unipro Ugene, but any advice from any approach will be helpful, I can find a way how to make use of it.

Answer
You are joking right? I mean you can't be serious with what you just wrote in your question.

5 August 2020: Looking for assistance on a review of the calculation of my work on Kendall's W and Tau. This method made more logical sense in that its heavily used for survey responses. I also converted the categories of the numbers to ratings of 1(highest score) to 5 (lowest score). I ran this through JASP as well, and over all it looks like this is statistically insignificant.

Research question: What Impact Does Triathlon Training Have on the Service Member Passing a Military Annual Fitness Exam?
Having just finished Research 202 I'm doing extracurricular research, and I'm wanting to understand, or rather, gain better familiarity with writing/working on projects. I have already completed, what I feel was a thorough, literature review on the topic. I had drafted/disseminated a survey to my target population (N=1,693), and by the close of the survey I have only n=15 respondents. All 14 respondents consider themselves Triathletes, and 1 considered non-triathlete. Therefore, I do not have enough participants to compare group 1 to group 2. I Think I could switch to a qualitative study, but before I change up a lot of work I'm wondering a couple questions.
What would the way forward be?
Is there a statistical Test for a singular group?
I also looked at Crossfit in literature Review, should a cross examination of a similar study be performed? (Since there is now experimentation, and the surveys is asking for averages of Fitness test Scores).
Relevant answer
Answer
If you compute the mean and standard deviation for each relevant variable in the 14 triathletes you can immediately get the confidence intervals at 95% (in the case of non gaussia variable you can use IQR as surrogate, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interquartile_range .
and check if your single non triathlete is within the confidence interval or not.
If you have too many variables and fear of chance correlation, you can simply compute the distances (euclidean distances is oK) between all the 14 triathletes on the entire set of variables, so obtaining 14X13/2 distinct pairwise distances between triathletes couples, compute mean and standard deviation of these 91 numbers (distinct distances) and then compute the 14 distances of the nontriathlet from all the triathletes and check if the mean of these 14 distances is within or outside the confidence interval of the 91 distances between triathletes.
