3. Ecology and Evolution.

Answer
Dear Félix Oscar Socorro Márquez,
Thank you for your lovely comments towards 'diversity discussion.'
Inside the word 'diversity', are there two letters 'i'?
I think one letter 'i' is the beginning of the word of 'idea.' The other letter 'i' is the beginning of the word of 'interesting.'
That mean we are having an interesting idea. Don't you think so?
There are also two letters 'i', one is inside the word of 'Félix,' and the other is inside the word of Thieu. Is it interesting?
Vietnamese proverb has a saying: Bầu ơi thương lấy bí cùng, tuy rằng khác giống nhưng chung một giàn.
Vietnamese proverb has a saying: Despite being of different species, winter melons and gourds are grown on the same structure, in the same place, so they should love each other.
My Friend,
I am wondering that is it a responsibility to return the soil back to the roofs of buildings, ready for green fields on the roofs?
(As you know, there are more than two letters 'i' in the word of responsibility.
I am glad to know you, Félix!

Hi,
I'm using the Malvern Zetasizer to measure size and Zeta potential of calcium carbonate particles. I expect them to be in the order of microns, and so I followed the manual, saying I should make a solution of around 0.1 mg/mL for effective measurement.
I am checking for the effect of pH and Ca-ion concentration on size and Zeta potential. Size distribution measurements seem to work correctly. But when I use a clean folded capillary cell to measure the Zeta potential, I keep getting peaks at 0 +/- 4 mV. Another student experienced the same with this device. Even a standard supplied by Malvern (which is supposed to be at -68 mV) produces a zero value.
I am about to consult with the apparatus supervisor here, but at this point I am just wondering if anyone else here has experienced the same phenomenon, and if so, if you managed to resolve the issue?
Relevant answer
Answer
Buy a dip cell, use regular cuvettes and enjoy the simplicity.
The folded capillary cells introduces far more problems than they solve and primarily benefit the manufacturer (encouraging you to buy a consumable and getting a patent).
Watch this space - I will be publishing a detailed investigation into the problems caused by the folded capillary cell including how you get different results compared to the dip cell and how the results can be very dependent of the experimental parameters. I'll also be showing with real data why the dip cell from the manufacturer also introduces measurement errors for certain kinds of samples.
And I'll offer a solution to these problems that can be used by anyone using a Zetasizer.

Any suggestions on how to pivot to policy making?
I saw that there are PhD about it, but I'm not sure to be qualified for them.
How could I increase the chances of being admitted to one without pursuing another master?
I'm finishing a double master in plant sciences and plant biotechnology at Wageningen University & Research. My specialisations are functional plant genomics and phytopathology and entomology, with a minor in nematology and one still to define (around biophysics and omics).
I did a thesis in nematology at the ETH Zurich, one in plant molecular biology at INRAE (French national institute for Agro-Environmental research) and one still to define at SLU (Swedish Agricultural University).
I'd like to pivot toward policy making, but I only have a few courses about transversal skills such as "Negotiation skills", "Communication & Persuasion", "Scientific Writing" etc. and none about policy itself.
Relevant answer
Answer
Great suggestion by Sally Elkady . I would suggest that you get into a PhD program focusing on Transdisciplinary research which straddles both policy-making and Biology. You have studied Phytobiology ( plant ecology), entomology, and genomics. I think it is a great combo to explore the impact of GM seeds and variants on friendly insects and plant ecology. This is exactly what is needed to influence policy. Your research comes would be suggested policy direction or changes that would ensure that ecology and friendly insects are protected for sustainable farming. Hope this helps.

If you were designing a consulting course from scratch for business students, what would you include? Why?
To what extent would it differ from a research methods course?
Relevant answer
Answer
In Research Methods, the focus is on the traditional research process and the methods used. In the consulting process, one of the major concerns is the need of the stakeholders- the clients. Usually, the method used is that of action research as differentiated from traditional research. You need to differentiate too the role of the management consultant from the organization development consultant. The process is different since there is entry and contracting, diagnosis and feedback, implementation of interventions, evaluation and institutionalizing the change effort. Consulting can be a one time thing focused or limited to a specific intervention, but the OD work is concerned with the whole process.

1. Who selects the criteria in a MCDM? Literature or decision maker?
2. Problem or research goal is obviously taken after reviewing the previous literature and a questionnaire will be developed.
3. Now the key point to know is :
(i) after consulting the relevant literature we just ask decision makers/experts to score the criteria and sub-criteria/alternatives.
(ii) Decision makers judge the questionnaire and during the panel interview (cognitive maps) they decide the criteria and sub-criteria/alternatives and then rate/score them?
Relevant answer
Answer
Dear Thanh
There is no doubt that determining criteria is important, and also their relative importance
Importance for what?
To select alternatives? No.
They are used to establish balances between criteria, determining gains and losses, and nothing else, therefore, they are not useful to evaluate alternatives
The only weights that are useful are those that measure the intrinsic discrimination in each criterion, such as Entropy and Standard Deviation

Dear Alex,
My point was that such a question could not really be answered precisely. Ultimately, it is up to a negotiation between the consultant and the contractor. I have done very little consulting in the health or business world, so I don't really have an answer for you. However, I suggest this for people starting out. That is to ask the contractor is they have a standard range they pay. After one gains some experience, they learn a reasonable range to ask.
Good luck,

Dear colleagues
I want to thank those that request copies of my publications and many people have written me asking for them. It is an honor and a satisfaction that people think that they can help
However, those publications are books or chapters of books or articles in a journal, and are protected by copyright, and if I make copies I would be violating my contracts with the publishers.
For this reason, please don't ask me for copies since I am forbidden by contract to do that.
I suggest consulting your university library, there are chances that some of them are there.
Until now, and for years, I have answering each requester, but I will start discontinuing this procedure.
Thank you for your understanding

One year ago requested to stop asking copies of my books or some chapters, and I explained the reasons.
It is not me, I don't own the books, I am only the author, and as that I can't send copies of them
I am deeply honored at these requests, but unfortunately there is nothing I can do. I have a signed contract with my publisher and I must honor it.
Until now I have been responding to everyone that asked for a book or a chapter of a book. I am sorry but from now on I will not longer respond and give an explanation for my refusal. I hope that you will understand
Every article that I write is published in RG, therefore, that is the place to go to get copies.

Hi! In my bachelor thesis am using a new scale (á 12 items) for sexual orientation and the reliability analysis resulted in Cronbachs Alpha .75. After consulting the inter-item-correlation, I decided that due to high correlations, high Alphas and due to the content to aggregate the items, which led me to only having 6 items. But now I am left with an Alpha of only .52. I could exclude one of the aggregated items, which would lead to a Alpha of .63. But that would would exclude "Attraction towards men" alltogether, which doesn't appear to be the most reasonable course.
How do I proceed? Is it valid to not do the aggregation and state why in my thesis?

Your initial Cronbach's value of 0.75 is adequate, and there is no need to exclude any items (only consider to exclude item when alpha value is above 0.90).

true and false. true to some extent.
HRM consulting may be unique to some extent, but it is not fully unique. it still has a base and reference. it may be differentiated, but it is unlikely fully differentiated.
HRM consultants are different from other consultants only to some extent. one can still look at what consultants require in general.
HRM consulting literature may be scarce. perhaps also the reason for your post.
HRM consulting should have 2 pillars. consultants and HRM. i think you should pay equal attention to both.

I'm consulting about which variables from trees can be (and has been) extracted from remote sensing data, and which variables has been used in allometric equations.
It's possible (how accurate) calculate biomass for a specific tree-specie using an allometric ecuation found in literature (GlobAllomeTree), even if the ecological variables are different from the tree in the literature and the one that I'm looking?
Relevant answer
Answer
If you have data on the location of the trees which you inventoried (and I mean precise geo-coordinates), then simply download VHR imagery (or consult with your project partners about acquiring UAV imagery for your area of interest, photogrammetrically pre-process it to extract an Orthomosaic) of your area of interest. This could be used for your OBIA to extract tree CPA which you can then match to your tree height dataset using their locational information. Once you have these matched, you can then proceed to using a species-specific allometric model ( you can extract this from the GlobAllomeTree website). You can even model the DBH of your current trees out, extract their wood density while at it and lots more. It should be very interesting but if you encounter further problems or need more technical advice you can contact me personally on this platform. Best of luck.

Anybody doing research on Creative Identities? Any suggested articles I could consult?
Relevant answer
Answer
I think,
'Creative Identity' is a thing which is associated with creativity and the society. Someone who has creative identity, he must has two things, one is creativity which is also recognized as creativeness by the society. If society does not give any recognition of anybody's creativity, the 'creative Identity' will not developed!? Even, the development of an Identity is not only dependent on an individual one but also on societal context(culture, power structure, economics, politics, etc.). There are abound of examples around us that people may have creativity but they are being treated as the men of insane work. Here the power politics of social exclusion is very relevant.
Moreover, in capitalist economy and society there is a deep influence of institutionalization. Now a days creativity is being shaped by the institutional nature and institution gives a testimony of creativeness which has a 'cultural capital', this sort of capital helps to get an Identity too. Creativity is existing every where, some are recognized, some are not and some are ignored!
I just want to explain with an example:
Now I am working with the Forcibly Displaced Myanmar Nationals (FDMN) in Bangladesh. You know, this is the world's largest refugee and humanitarian crisis in recent time. Here, I found, many children are playing with their hand made toys. Now question is that, the boy or girl who is playing with hand made toys made by him/herself is creative? Definitely they are creative. Creativity always comes out from the human spirit whatever it is in emergency situation or in peaceful situation. But, when we will talk about 'creative identity' it becomes complicated with the connection of society.

Hi, I have a quick question. My variable (for which i have collected some data through surveys) is called importance of x factor in consulting success and is ranked between 1-5.
Suppose, I want to prove a hypothesis that the importance of factor x in consulting success is greater than 3 (or the mean is greater than 3). Therefore, I want to reject the hypothesis that the importance of factor x in consulting success is less than or equal to 3. For this kind of analysis, should I just use the mean value to prove or reject the hypothesis, like if the mean is 4, i say it is proven that the importance of x factor is indeed greater than 3? or is there some other method I can use like for instance a one-tailed one sample t-test? would this test be relevant in my case? Hi, so I'm doing some final analysis for my thesis and the basis of my thesis is that there are certain crucial factors that need to be present for success in consulting. The only data that I have is the importance of these crucial factors in consulting success on a scale of 1-5, so only independent variables and no proper dependent variable.
My question is, can I make a hypothesis statement such as "The importance of factor x in consulting success, on average, is at least a 4 out of a 1-5 scale" or ""The importance of factor x in consulting success, on average, is at least very important." I say "very important" because on my scale, very important means a 4. Can I use this kind of a hypothesis? and this accept or reject it based on the mean value?
So if the mean is at least a 4, I accept it. Based on my work and the data that I have, I feel this to be the only solution. Thanks.

@Timira, thank you for your answer. So, if I develop the hypothesis as "x factor is very important (4 on a 1-5 scale) in consulting success at 90% confidence," that would make more sense? If that is what you suggested, then what method can I use to prove or reject this statement? I have values right now for the variable on a 1-5 scale so I can only calculate the mean. Is there any other method or calculation that I can use to bring in the "confidence" element? Thanks.

When we talk about values-based medicine, it differs widely which values are important or necessary or both and how and who defines such values. With the question above, I want to showcase how many different values can play a role. Or maybe they are not so different and there are certain 'core' values which are the same for everyone.
I am looking forward to your answers.

Hi guys, I am doing a research about the welding under nitrogen atmosphere. I made an alloy and welded it using arc under nitrogen atmosphere. In order to quantify how much nitrogen was dissolved into weld area, I first cross-sectioned the weld area, polished and used XPS depth profiling at first due to its high sensitivity. I used multipek to do analysis and found that result was not convincing since it showed a very weird metal elemental compositions. After reading some literature and consulting technicians, it seems that XPS is suitable for qualitative analysis (relative amount) but not quantification. But for a rough guess there would be around 1% of nitrogen dissolved from XRD measurement.
Then I turned to WDX after reading some nitrogen steel literature published in 60s-80s. After consulting technicians, they said WDX was not accurate to measure nitrogen content too. It makes me confused since most of the papers studying nitrogen in alloy used WDX and WDX is designed to measure low Z elements with better detection limit.
Is it impossible to use WDX to measure nitrogen (around 1at %)? If not then how does the structural steel manufacturer give you production cert with nitrogen content as low as 0.2%? ToF-SIMS is not suitable for us since our financial fund is not enough and it is not worth it.
Relevant answer
Answer
As I know, WDX can quantitively measure nitrogen up to detection limit around 0.01wt % with detector cyrstals having very higher sensitivity for Nitrogen. You also need good standard materials for accuracy.

About an year ago, I intended to submit my article in International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies (ICALT 2017). I Submitted the paper and got acceptance letter within a week. Despite being a young researcher I became curious about the originality of the conference. I consulted with my supervisor who told me about the fake Organization (WASET) which was replicating the original conferences with the same name as of famous conferences. Then I stopped any further conversation with the ICALT 2017, the fake one without submitting the conference fee and submitted the paper in Original conference. Today, I encountered that my article was published and was available on the web under WASET organization. I intend to submit the full version of the same paper to well reputed journal but curious to know the following points.
1. Can I withdraw the article published under WASET
2. Can I submit the full version of the same paper to an indexed journal.
3. If I can not submit this article to an original conference or journal what could I do with my hard earned research work which has been lost ?
Relevant answer
Answer
Unfortunately, the Academy of Management Ethics Education Committee would suggest that you would be on dangerous ground to attempt to publish the same publication in multiple journals.
One way around that problem is to make a significant change in the paper and you could then submit the new paper to a different journal or conference.
You may wish to familiarize yourself with the Code of Ethics of the Academy of Management -- or your appropriate academic area, should you be a part of a difference academic field.
Good luck!

You can check the articles that the magazine has published, generally although each magazine has its rules, others have a template, but it is best to read and review previous articles that magazine has published, so you get the idea that they review when you send the article, extension of the article, formats of the tables and figures and do not forget the references, they give great importance to the format of these.

Question

Dear all,
I am using the linkage-disequilibrium method implemented in the NeEstimator software; to compute Ne values for several fish species all collected from the same geographical area.
Fst values across the focal species are sometimes significant but relatively low: the maximum value is a 5-6% differentiation explained by sampling sites. Therefore, I wanted to estimate a "global" (~ meta-) Ne, i.e. at the total study area scale (one value per species), just to compare these Ne value between species on the area. Molecular markers are of the same nature (110 to 150 biallelic SNPs for each species, developed based on a discovery panel from the study area) but as we might expect, gene diversity varies between species, with expected heterozygosity ranging from on average 0.25 to 0.40.
So I had two questions:
(1) eventhough sub-structure might (slightly?) bias Ne estimation at the whole geographical area scale, what would you say about the relevance of comparing Ne between different species?
(2) LD-based estimation of Ne could also be biased by highly unbalanced allele frequencies (e.g., MAF for a locus very close to 0). Have you faced such an issue; and would you have any piece of advice regarding this particular feature and the resulting interpretations?
I have already consulted the following papers; which I am enclosing here if anyone is interested:
doi: 10.1002/ece3.485 (about Ne and meta-Ne estimations)
doi: 10.1111/j.1755-0998.2007.02061.x (Waples, 2008 - LDNe)
doi:10.1098/rstb.2005.1682 (Wang, 2005)
doi: 10.1007/s10592-005-9103-8 (England, 2006)
doi: 10.1007/s10592-005-9103-8 (England et al., 2005)
I could estimate Ne per sampling site or per cluster when these exist. However, I would suffer of low sample size (typically 15-40) and when giving this a try, I usually got nothing but infinite values and/or CIs.
Thank you very much for any help! :-)
Best regards,
Chrystelle
Relevant answer
Answer
Hi Chrystelle,
Interesting questions. Couple of things: what is the underlying population structure of these species without considering sample location? Have you performed analyses such as a PCA, clustering, or genetic distance? Estimated the number of migrants or migration rates? That way you can identify potential genetic groupings that would serve as a more appropriate units to estimate Ne. It would be more biologically-based than sample-based.
With LDNe it is often advisable to estimate Ne using different thresholds of MAF. I believe the default is usually 0.02. That will give an indication of how much MAF is affecting your estimates of Ne.
In theory Ne estimates for different species are comparable. Are the same exact loci being used across species? There are a number of studies that have pulled together Ne estimates from different species and compared them, so I would say they are comparable. The theory is the same.
Try estimating Ne at the site-level and across sites and report both with a fair discussion of what the limitations of combining site localities with slight substructuring might be. Check out some of Andrew Whiteley's paper's on brook trout: he has written extensively about this topic. Also, Wang's recent paper in Molecular Ecology suggests his sibship based estimate of Ne implemented in Colony might be more accurate and does not have the same assumptions of LD-Ne, but requires a larger sample size.
Good luck.

Hey Researchers!
I am a Professional Research Assistant with a BS in psychology who got his hands on a Tobii TX-300 eye-tracking system. I have been responsible for setup of the system, task design, and consultations with other researchers who want to use the system.
I am interested in learning standard approaches to analyzing eye-tracking data, specifically working with the output file from the Tobii and Eprime system where each row represents a single sample. I have experimented with the data in R using the EyeTrackingR package and in MATLAB.
Do you have any experience working with eye-tracking data? I find it all overwhelming, but would like to learn what I can for this position. I prefer to work in R or Python, and can likely write a script once I get my head around the processes. Namely, I want to extract the probability of first fixation for each stimulus type in my experiment. Which I think means I need to subset my data into trials and do some scripting.
As you can tell, I am quite confused. I appreciate any advice or guidance from you.
Regards,
Robert E.

Answer
Hi Robert,
You probably might have realised that there’s no gold standard approach to analysing eye tracking data. Rather the approaches that the researchers used are primarily driven by their research questions, and the limitations of their eye tracking equipment (such as sampling rates, design flaws etc.).
Before you even go about extracting probability of first fixation for each of your stimuli etc. (though I'm not sure why you would need that variable), you'll definitely need to parse your eye tracking data first. Given that you’re interested in fixation data, perhaps this paper may be a great start in terms of understanding some of the broad approaches for parsing eye tracking data (saccades and fixations). This article even provides some pseudocodes for readers to get started -
Salvucci & Goldberg (2000) Identifying fixations and saccades in eye-tracking protocols
This reader-friendly book has also been recommended to me previously when I just started eye tracking -
Holmqvist, K et al. Eye tracking: A comprehensive guide to methods and measures
Also if I’m not mistaken, the Tobii software uses a velocity-based threshold approach for parsing saccades from fixations. They have published their ‘white-papers’ with regards to their eye tracker under the authors Olsen & Matos. It is up to you to decide if the Tobii software and the filter used can provide you with the variables/ data you need to answer your research question.
Hope this helps,

Hallo,
We need piezoelectronic pressure sensor for oscilloscope measurement up to 120 bar or less (40 bar) for observe dynamic  pressure waves during pulsed arc electro hydraulic discharge (3 kv) between iron rods into distilled water environment .
The main demand for pressure sensor is that it should work in the water environment under voltage (as during discharges contact fluid is in touch with sensor) and it also should catch 300 nanosecond duration pressure waves. Any design is secondary meaning.
Mainly sensors have metal body (with thread) which I think would be affected voltage damage or measurement failure.
Could you propose any product suitable for our measurement OR may consult with different measurement solution of dynamic pressure change (for example, indirect measurement of pressure change by sound waves, etc.)

I have seen many articles with bar graphs on different percentages of positive cells from immunofluorescent photos, but I need to know if to create these graphs it is only necessary to observe the image or there really is a specific intensity value to define which cell is positive or not. (I think this is the best method, but I can not find this methodology). Please, recommend me any document that you I consult. Thanks!!
Relevant answer
Answer
Hi Daniela,
the intensity values you get depend on many factors (mainly laser intensity and image acquisition settings). This is why there is no general number for a minimal fluorescence intensity value that corresponds to positive cells.
A good protocol to count positive cells is (in my opinion) the following:
1. Make sure the samples you want to compare are stained together, to avoid differences in the quality of your immunofluorescence staining
2. Acquire all your images with the same laser, objective and imaging settings
3. Take one representative image and use ImageJ to set a threshold so that your positive cells are above the threshold and negatives are below. This is really very much like looking at your image and deciding what is the best value.
4. Analyse all your images with the same threshold settings.
In practice, this is not very different from looking at your images and counting cells; one does this to eliminate personal bias, that might bring you to include cells that are not so clearly positive in some of the samples.
Best of luck!

I am doing a dissertation research project, which involves a moderated mediation model. It studies the relationship between academics' perceived negativity of student feedback (IV) and their distress (DV) via self-efficacy (mediator). Then I examine the moderating role of academics' emotional intelligence (EI) in the relationship between their perceived negativity of student feedback and self-efficacy.
I will need to know if I can have EI as a moderator in my model, as I am not sure if a moderator (EI) can have a positive correlation with a mediator (self-efficacy). Circuit riders were employed by growing churches to ride a circuit through the newly settled and soon-to-be settled regions of the American west. Their job was to set up new congregations and preach the gospel to the settlers, who were going through many difficulties of this life. I am interested in the period of 1870-1900.
My question encompasses the following:
 - What were the typical activities and tasks of these itinerant priests? What would an average day-in-the-life be like?
 - What sermons and bible passages would they have addressed to the settlers?
 - How involved did they get in the settlers lives? Did they help them build buildings and clear land, or just pass through?
 - Were there external factors that affected their work? Examples: American Indian rebellions, businesses, railroads, settler nationalities, local and state governments
 - Did they solicit settlers for money?
 - What sources can I consult to learn more about this?

I recommend a book entitled, "A Sketch of the Life and Labors of Rev. Fletcher Thomas" by Fletcher Thomas. (Published by the United Brethren Publishing House, 1907.) This book gives a real detailed look at the life of a United Brethren circuit rider.  He served 12 churches in north central Indiana as I recall.  Talks about having no horse and walking for hours to get from church to church, often in deep snow.  Talks about living in one room cabins, appointment after appointment.  Talks about having to have the latest silk hat and not being able to afford it.  Talks about praying with a dying 20 something year old.  He began preaching in 1853. Fletcher preached his last sermon on June 13th, 1907 and died June 17th of the same year.  He is buried in North Manchester, Indiana.  This book had a profound impact on me as a young and newly appointed pastor.  In the preface he says, "With the confident hope that this little volume may be read with interest and profit by some discouraged Christian, or by some young minister whom God has called to the work of the ministry..."

Answer
Daniel,
you do not specify what outcomes you are interested in, and whether you are interested in a particular society. The working title for your research project does indeed suggest you are after causal relationships and you would therefore need a longitudinal or experimental study design. Both are expensive designs so secondary data analysis seems the way forward. There are plenty of birth cohort studies around the world who will very likely include information on whether a cohort child was breastfeed or not. In the UK we have, e.g., the MCS, the BCS70, NCDS (all run by the Centre for Longitudinal Studies at the Institute of Education) and Understanding Society which all are longitudinal and have questions on breastfeeding. For cohort studies in other parts of the world you'll have to search the web.
Hope this helps, and good luck.

1. Speaking about measurement, not sure I understand what means "high" in your context.  It is a figure which is perceived as being "high"?  Or it is a particular situation where it is "higher" comparing with industry data?
2. I would do a research on people in the company to understand: their career expectations and plans, their professional development needs, other factors which are affecting their desire to stay or to go.  Based on culture, organizational maturity, business environment, here you can have lot of factors: social responsibility, business ethics, attitude toward environment, internal communication, etc.
3. I would try to understand people which left the organization, or which just decided to do so, what were their reasons.
4. After having a list of factors at 2. and 3. I will look for commonalities, define some metrics, see if they are aligned with business strategy/operations, if not will align them. Based on this will be possible to design and action plan, start to implement it and measure the success!
Good luck! :)
