Answer
I think it would be useful to provide the BIM-based technologies for contractors and supply planning which can be obtained by using the automated technology of construction and reconstruction management AT "Building Manager".
AT "Building Manager" is not one software product, but a system of interconnected software products of different developers, designed to achieve a main goal:
- Maximum automation and information linkage of all divisions of the design and construction organisation into a single system with complex and dynamic resources – time – costs estimation.
The creation of this automated technology required considerable efforts from developers of all software complexes included in AT, from the development and coordination of information exchange protocols to the development of special software.
Joint operation of software complexes of different purposes within the framework of a single system not only systematised all information flows against the background of significant reduction of labour intensity of separate processes (for example: calculation of estimates or formation of network organisational and technological model of construction for calculations of calendar plans) with the significant increase of information reliability level, but also has opened such opportunities, which were unavailable when using these software complexes separately.
Such capabilities include 4D-visualisation of the construction process (three-dimensional display of the construction object on any day of the calendar plan with or without the fact of work execution).
Inclusion or not of different software complexes in AT "Building Manager" is not regulated by any contract between developers, but is determined by functional capabilities of software products to provide import and export of information with the use of information exchange protocols accepted in AT "Building Manager".

Dear Purushotham
Each of us has the own story about life experience and why we become students .
I spend 17 years in this Construction field, and you all be surprised by the way I become student at my age 51 years old in 2024.
I can see many of you very well educated and smart appearence that link through the academic skills over the years we spend ,we know we start from scratch, making mistakes or errors help us first to introduce ourselves, who are you ? What is your aiming with GBS along for the next 4 years .
How that experience along with GBS I will use for good purposes ?
I was working especially in Construction field that involve residential projects ,and I become student because I lost the job,now the reason to message you Purushotham but also for all readers why we need to understand the Scientific Management to developing perfect skills and F.W.Taylor (1856-1915) focus on maximum prosperity that Management and workers work together towards this common aim was self evident but there were conflicts ,strikes and strikes, why ?
Taylor felt to share three main reasons that the workers feared that more output meant fewer jobs, poor quality tawdry Management resulted in workers going slow to protect themselves and worst of all ,inefficient ways of performing their allocated tasks.
My main reason before our communication is to identify us as a trust person with new skills to understand each of us .
The Project Manager I was working till this January 2024 told me to go home when I said my father dies as well and my mum suffer from osteoporosis and heart illness, was asking me to go home when I said that.
Why Management leaders cannot perform the best quality of leadership since they should guide us ? Workers like you all were casual and lackadaisical in meeting their work commitment.
I believe from all my heart through my own experience Management leaders had not studied workers methods of working to find better ways of doing jobs but had left the workers to do their jobs as best they could-with disastrous results .
That remind me clearly about Taylor when he said if there is conflicts condemned them and said that the only reason they occurred was because of unscientific Management and give us several example where he believe those fail related to .
I said to myself what type of person I can be after 4 years graduation with GBS? What type of vision and academic skills I will use on integrity basis to be proud in relation with others ? I will be better person as a best support for others to provide adequately trained to immigrants, poor people in order that in the future to do their job properly?
Can I take advantage as a Project Manager to abuse others ? Can I provide different positive outcomes to others I work that not to do against others what others did to me in the past ?
How relevant is to prove our relationship as a human kind before I answer you all,students and people paths definitely will change people concept and life education, share and talk,be kind and answer to others in the way those exchanged life experiences would help us by become better people.
My mum Maria 72 years old told me about this unique opportunity with GBS to apply when I was lost the Job in Swindon .
My promise is to be the best and learn from you all,advice each other in the context to be better people in relation with all others .
Herzberg theory noted that are demotivators as well as motivators.
Regular performances reviews bonuses and fringe benefits along with team work ,encourage involvement in all types of advice we are looking for ,help you to believe over time what type of person we are.
I mean shortly I describe myself,as a new student I am keen to learn and explore our idea in the context to become better Managers ,educated first to understand and support others from our time and life experience .
I have 2 emails that we can communicate and they're :
I would like to share and ask questions relevant for you all ,may I ask you something Purushotham, can I ?
It is straightforward, so GBS work with students from private financial support and government student finance ,1 different categories ,if you are the GBS leader are you going to treat all the students with the same responsibilities dignity and privacy for the next 4 years ?
Are you going to answer them and support all students unconditionally to their relevant subject related to trust ,equality rights ,information’s sometimes could arrive to GBS that could be falsificated by third parties that could harm the students reputations ,if for example you are GBS leader what could be your message for all students ? What is the first commitment in our relationship to be considered ?

Dear Colleagues,
Construction project management is a process that includes a number of operations, activities, and decisions that are closely related to an executed investment and that aim to create new, or to increase, existing fixed assets in order to achieve utility effects. The utility effect of the construction process may be the construction of a new building, or the renovation or modernization of an existing building. In each construction process, according to the definition of the building object's life cycle, the following four basic phases are distinguished: the programming/planning phase, the implementation phase, the operation/use/maintenance phase, and the phase of decommissioning or demolition. Appropriate planning of the entire construction process is a very important operation, which has a direct impact on whether success is achieved when implementing an investment project.
The construction industry is characterized by a high complexity of implemented construction processes, variability of implementation conditions, diversity of facilities, applied technologies, and methods of work organization. The execution of construction projects is specific and particularly difficult because each implementation is a unique, complex, and dynamic process that consists of several or more subprocesses related to each other, in which various participants of the investment process take part.
Therefore, there is still a vital need to study, research, and conclude engineering technology and management applied in construction projects.
We encourage publishing applied results of research.

Public/ User participation and its importance in public infrastructure projects is being understood more and more nowadays leading to increased public/ user engagement in development of such infrastructure assets. The view of 'uninformed project user' is going away with availability of better technologies for information dissemination whether it be project specific or local area information. The inevitability of understanding/ assessing local needs to the fullest and efforts for improved transparency in the project delivery system supplement these.
Is it getting established that views of the local users have the maximum utility in enhancing the project value / bringing out maximum benefits out of the asset?
Relevant answer
Answer
One key to productive public engagement is the need to inform the public about the hidden dynamics of infrastructure. In the early 1900s, there was a London neighborhood where workers had to pay a toll to cross a bridge to get to their jobs. The public, when informed of this, thought it was terrible to charge working class people a toll to get tot their jobs. In response, the government eliminated the toll. Within a short time, rents in this neighborhood increased by the amount of the toll. Workers who used the bridge were no better off than before. Some, who didn't use the bridge, were worse off because their rents went up and they received no benefit.
If infrastructure projects are well-designed and well-executed, the price of well-served land goes up, creating windfall profits for a few who are lucky-enough to own well-served land. The ability of private landowners to appropriate publicly-created land value is the fuel for land speculation -- a parasitic activity that creates nothing of value, but which inflates land prices to the detriment of residents and businesses alike.
So public engagement regarding infrastructure projects must include education about land value creation. This education should also inform people about techniques for land value return and recycling, whereby publicly-created land values can be returned to the public sector and used to pay for the infrastructure that created them.

Hello everybody
I would like to link two topics, LCCA and BIM, each of which deals with "structural and earthquake engineering" and "construction management" in civil engineering, respectively.
I am trying to investigate on LCCA of a structure equipped with Tuned Mass Dampers (TMDs) based on principles of Performance Based Earthquake Engineering (PBDE) for different seismic hazard levels (this issue is related to structural engineering). So I intend to use BIM to create a more realistic cost model including other costs are related to this topic.
Relevant answer
Answer
I suggest that you use the 5D BIM technology, which is related to the cost of construction elements. You need to model your project using software as revit, and then link the model's elements to the cost and time schedule using software like Naviswork. This will give you visualization for the construction phases and the project life cycle.

As a method of the research we used Automated system-cognitive analysis (ASC-analysis), which is a new innovative method of artificial intelligence: it also has its own software tool – an intelligent system called "Eidos" (open source software) [1, 2, 3].
The Eidos-X++ system differs from other artificial intelligence systems in the following parameters:
- was developed in a universal setting, independent of the subject area. Therefore, it is universal and can be applied in many subject areas (http://lc.kubagro.ru/aidos/index.htm);
- is in full open free access (http://lc.kubagro.ru/aidos/_Aidos-X.htm), and with the relevant source texts (http://lc.kubagro.ru/__AIDOS-X.txt);
- is one of the first domestic systems of artificial intelligence of the personal level, i.e. it does not take special training in the field of technologies of artificial intelligence from the user (there is an act of introduction of system "Eidos" of 1987) (http://lc.kubagro.ru/aidos/aidos02/PR-4.htm);
- provides stable identification in a comparable form of strengh and direction of cause-effect relationships in incomplete noisy interdependent (nonlinear) data of very large dimension of numerical and non-numerical nature, measured in different types of scales (nominal, ordinal and numerical) and in different units of measurement (i.e. does not impose strict requirements to the data that can not be performed, and processes the data that is);
- contains a large number of local (supplied with the installation) and cloud educational and scientific applications (currently 31 and 199, respectively) (http://lc.kubagro.ru/aidos/Presentation_Aidos-online.pdf);
- provides multilingual interface support in 44 languages. Language databases are included in the installation and can be replenished automatically;
- supports on-line environment of knowledge accumulation and is widely used all over the world (http://aidos.byethost5.com/map5.php);
- the most time-consuming computationally, the operations of the synthesis models and implements recognition by using graphic processing unit (GPU) that some tasks can only support up to the solution of these tasks is several thousand times that really provides intelligent processing of big data, big information and big knowledge;
- provides transformation of the initial empirical data into information, and its knowledge and solution using this knowledge of classification problems, decision support and research of the subject area by studying its system-cognitive model, generating a very large number of tabular and graphical output forms (development of cognitive graphics), many of which have no analogues in other systems (examples of forms can be found in: http://lc.kubagro.ru/aidos/aidos18_LLS/aidos18_LLS.pdf);
- well imitates the human style of thinking: gives the results of the analysis, understandable to experts on the basis of their experience, intuition and professional competence.

in your opinion what are the most significant contributions in relation to contingency thinking in project management? how does that theory impact project management methodologies? why is that field under explored ?
Relevant answer
Answer
Some of the papers I read which mention "contingency theory" (15% of the papers in my personal Mendeley database) seem to use this as a kind of disclaimer. On the other hand, it's certainly a lens a critical observer must use. E.g. Müller: "... contingency theory explains the reciprocal determination of OPM elements (i.e., their positing against each other) by ... "
I perform research on ideal characteristics of members of project steering committees. Based on papers the ideal characteristics might vary on a lot of contingencies (project phase, complexity, degree of outsourcing, level of projectification etc). I will have the same issue as the other papers. I might be able to add one of two independent variables in the research. But more would make at least the quantitative part undoable.
I am not sure that the field is underexplored. Just that due to practical reasons only a few variables will be taken into account in at least quantitative studies. Could you explain with what you mean by "underexplored"? And what is "the field" or is it more a lens for research?
For me in my practitioner life what contingency theory brings: if you state there is one best solution, you should be very carefull in proving that.

Construction field today is generally seen as a management science, but in my opinion it is supposed to be an engineering science.
This epistemological difference in attitude has much to do with construction scientists not being serious about finding a solution to this problem in an industry that is so vast and so well funded.
Even today there is no satisfactory theory to explain construction process. What do you feel?
Relevant answer
Answer
Safeer Ali, I would also respectfully disagree with you.
The entire construction process needs to evolve and change it's mentality in order to increase productivity and reduce delays. And researchers have been on the case for a few decades now with BIM, the space planning ( https://ascelibrary.org/doi/pdf/10.1061/%28ASCE%290733-9364%281994%29120%3A1%2896%29 ) and The Lean Construction ( http://www.leanconstruction.org/media/docs/Koskela-TR72.pdf). One of the objectives of those works is to increase the collaboration between stakeholders.
So, in that regard, for the design phase, a proper use of BIM is probably the way to go. You can look at the work of Professor Daniel Forgue (https://scholar.google.ca/citations?user=FXCB-qwAAAAJ&hl=en&authuser=1&oi=ao) for more information on how BIM will help the construction industry.
Then, the works mentioned by
Peter E.D Love
, have prove there positive effects on construction project managements.
And for the construction phase, proper planning techniques are essentials to prevent delays. So, you can look at the following work
- Iris D. Tommelein and the Takt-Time Planning ( )
- Adel Francis and The Chronographical Modeling

Relevant answer
Answer
Thanks Peter Zeile and Aryan Shahabian for your posts.
I agree with both however it is much more difficult to work in some areas than the others when it comes to VR and more specifically in AR. I’ve recently reviewed a couple of papers in this area which although we’re good attempts missed on the research methodology 101 and that was a shame!
We have also published a couple of papers recently mostly in conferences to test the ground and believe that there definitely are new boundaries to be explores and new grounds to cover.
At SET, UoB, we have recently won some investment fund for developing AR/VR research in our school and acquired a good mix of AR/VR Technologies (HoloLens included). We are still to set up our new lab physically but good news is that we will be up and running soon.
on another account in an independent research group I lead we are also concentrating on self-commissioned research in this area.
The discussion here was what we have in our group as a regular topic and have recently decided to dedicate our next project to a couple of ideas which will hopefully come to fruition soon.
Ill keep updating the post both in here and in a project I’ve set up on RG.
Thanks again and hope we can develop some areas of joint research activities in the near future.

1. 7-8 years ago, I attended a National BIM symposium/seminar in Manchester in UK where one of the speakers who was the BIM manager for a leading multinational construction company used the phrase “BIM, BAM, BOOM” in her presentation which made everyone more laugh than think.
2. Couple of years later I attended a prominent conference where someone was introduced by the Head of School of the host university as a BIM guru/leading expert in the UK despite having no direct background in [building or construction] engineering. Just a few minutes after this introduction, the BIM guru, who was reporting to the conference organising committee, failed to zoom in on a MS Excel spreadsheet as per request of one of the audience who could not see the figures simply because he didn’t know how to do it! Someone needed to go on the stage to do it for him!
3. Today BIM experts, researchers and policy makers who have got no idea about the paradigmatic differences between BIM and what it has succeeded are in abundance.
4. We hear/see/feel/sense/witness that BIM has not been able to deliver its promise and this is somewhat evidenced by the feedback we receive from the industry.
My question is: ”Has BIM really outlived its true value/promise or is it suffering from being bastardised (sorry this is not an F-word but quite an academic term) and subject to misuse/abuse as a result of our misunderstandings or lack of complete picture it entails?”
Please join me in this open discussion with your opinions, stories and experiences on this topic.

Great question and very good critical observations. BIM is not the "magic bullet" that it was portrayed as when it hit the market. It is just a tool, not a philosophy. BIM is merely a highly effective computer design tool that can be linked with estimating and scheduling tools to assist the project manager, but it still requires human intervention and a discipline to feed the tool and evaluate its output. Like all the other magic bullets that have arisen in our industry, critical path scheduling, partnering, alliancing, lean construction, to name a few, BIM does not guarantee success. Its the people on the project team that make that happen. We seem to forget that no matter what gimmicks we employ in the project delivery process, the project team must still plan, design, construct, commission, and maintain the completed project. That is and always has been a very difficult, very complex effort. The tools help sort out the complexities, but only if their practitioners understand and appreciate their limitations. I spent 20 years in the construction industry before moving to academia and have found that my academic colleagues tend to assume reality out of the project management equation because it greatly simplifies the analysis and leads to gee-whiz, publishable findings. I'll end this missive before I go off the deep end on this line of reasoning. Thank you very much for initiating this dialog. It is greatly needed. Cheers

Can negotiation over costing be equated to collaboration in practice? if not, what's true collaboration should be on costing process? and where does collaborative costing stops and collusion begins?
The rationale is to understand the boundary between people working together to build a cost and the ones working to fix/negotiate a cost, can it be equated as the same? what's the good thing and what's the bad thing here?
Relevant answer

Yes saad, that's very true especially in public-sector, I've also come across that. Am now looking into the private and partnering world, and surprisingly it is not so different. Although, like you said, there are instances where good practices occur. But am beginning to ponder whether the term 'collaborative costing' only exist at the TC setting! In the case of feasibility stage cost planning and later the point where contractors/suppliers are engage is still business as usual.

Add chips to hand working tools, to monitor % of time each tool is being used? Monitor the power of battery charged tools and bring charged batteries (using a drone?) right before the worker runs out of battery?
Similarly - monitoring gas, oil and temperature of heavy machinery, remotely. Also doing statistical analysis of their movement efficiency.
Attaching sensors to specific components, to monitor progress of construction. Say - attaching a sensor to a beam, and the activated sensor indicates you reached some % of construction progress - thus monitoring construction schedule progress passively, centralized. You can count exactly how many beams were put up that day... and analyse variation of working speed - potentially troubleshooting the bottlenecks.
Workers can be equipped with sensors, to make sure they get enough breaks. If they had life parameters measured, you could detect when someone is becoming dehydrated, overheating or otherwise sick. Besides the obvious "supervising", to evaluate work performance. This could allow to give bonus to the top performers more efficiently, to reward personal / team performance more efficiently.
IOT in a construction site... take a 5 year old with you, and ask him to say the names of everything he knows the name of. Then find a way to attach a WiFi chip on that thing... a hammer... a shoe... a shovel ... a concrete mixer... a truck ... a tire... a drill... a wall ... IOT everything - temperature, inclination, movement, shape, weight, sound, brightness.... everything :)

Despite the importance to society, construction industry projects suffer frequent delays and cost increases (OLIVEIRI et al., 2016). Construction works have a huge waste and a low efficiency compared to other industries. Damage generated in infrastructure works worldwide brings losses of 1 trillion dollars worldwide (MCKINSEY & COMPANY, 2013). The delays and frequent increases in costs found in construction were the great drivers for companies to start directing a greater effort in the planning and monitoring of construction projects.
Relevant answer
Answer
The question about how to control cost belongs to the category of totally outdated models of control.  While other industries have successfully moved from Roman-type to preventive management, this industry is not interested in modernizing its paradigm.  While other industries have doubled, quadrupled... their productivity  (according the the Economist, Agriculture in the US had a 16 fold increase) since 1960,  productivity of construction in the US is going down and down and is now below the level of 1960. Should the entire Academia be leading the change when observing clear evidence that the "state-of-practice" is moving in the wrong direction?   Does  Academia not have the responsibility to provide leadership pave the road for a paradigm change.  However, only a tiny number of papers are published that prove with field data the hypothesis the large benefits resulting from applying the Zero Muda paradigm (in safety, quality, and productivity).  Why is that?  How many textbooks does the Construction Academia have that explain and demonstrate the effect of preventive management?  How many centuries will it take until preventive thinking is able to change the direction of the mainstream "herd of sheep"?   When will Academia ensure that every student is able to think critically, possesses skills, knowledge and confidence to not blindly accept the mantra that says: "Don't change it until its broken". Eventually, they will become the leaders.

You can use TOPSIS without weights.
So, why do you want to complicate your problem?
If you want to use AHP in quantitative variables you can use these values to comnpte their relationships as you do in AHP, but here working with reliables and not estimated values correspondingt to the DM preferences

Relevant answer

The choice of which constitutive model you will use to represent the behavior cement mortar, it will depends of the computacional program that you use. In Abaqus, I proposed to used the Damage Plasticy Concrete because it gave me better results. In Ansys, I achived better results using Morh Coulomb criteria.
In abaqus, you will need to provide parameters that represents the behaviour of mortar. This sitution can be resolved using numerical models that have been developed for other authors, or you can used the equactions proposide in standards, like EUROCODE. Generally, the numerical model for compression behaviour, it is provided using (stress x strain) curve, while for tracion, you can use energy fracture, or (stress x strain) curve, or even, (stress x displacement) curve. I this work i prefered use in tracion (stress x strain) curve.
But, In recents jobs I am prefering use energy fracture.

Although aware of different dissertation types (traditional, work-based, and 'literature review') in my discipline 'construction project management' the first two types are much more prevalent. This field mainly employs social sciences research into management issues, or natural sciences research into materials. Therefore it is rare to see any dissertation without primary research. I'd be interested in opening this up for discussion to see a) in which fields is this approach more frequent, and b) what the key success criteria for dissertations that do not employ primary research would be?
Relevant answer
Answer
The type of research secondary or primary or both would depend to a great extent on the objectives of the research and the reliability and accessibility of data. In case of research in Finance area with valid data bases a great amount of reported research is based on secondary data. It is usually better to triangulate the findings from different sources of data for more credibility.
