I am wondering which term is more appropriate for use in titles when discussing a group within a larger category: 'among' or 'in'?
For example:
'Prevalence of sleep disorders among children with autism'
'Prevalence of sleep disorders in children with autism'
Could you explain the difference between using 'among' and 'in' in such contexts and advise which option is more suitable for title usage?
Relevant answer
Both "among" and "in" can be appropriate in titles when discussing a group within a larger category, but the choice depends on the specific context and emphasis of the title. Here's a brief overview of the optimal usage for each term:
Among:
Use "among" when you want to emphasize the idea of being part of a larger group or set, but not necessarily confined to it. This term suggests that the group you're referring to is integrated or exists within a broader context.
Example title: "Patterns of Communication Among Adolescents in Urban Schools"
In:
Use "in" when you want to emphasize the idea of being contained or located within a specific category or context. This term suggests a more specific or bounded relationship between the group and the larger category.
Example title: "Factors Affecting Academic Achievement in Students with Disabilities"
In summary, consider the nuances of meaning and emphasis you want to convey in your title when choosing between "among" and "in." If you want to highlight the group's integration within a larger context, use "among." If you want to emphasize their specific location or relationship within a category, use "in."

How can we demonstrate the efficacy of multimodal composing in enhancing writing skills, particularly in the context of academic writing, given the prevalent skepticism surrounding its effectiveness in improving academic writing skills? are there any methods or techniques of analyzing students' multimodal products to showcase improvement in terms of macro or micro-skills of writing? concerning coherence, content, organization, etc.
Relevant answer
Answer
Hello, Nikhil
You can analyze students' traditional academic writing before and after engaging in multimodal projects using measures of writing quality like a rubric. Look for improvements from the baseline in areas like organization, coherence, evidence use, style etc. I also suggest you to consider using a survey. The survey should be addressed for students on their perceived improvements in writing skills after completing a multimodal project. Also survey their confidence levels in applying writing skills to academic tasks before and after. Good luck

As an inexperienced teacher in the field of online teaching, I have the fear of unconsciously ignoring one of the skills while focusing on not ignoring the other!
Therefore, I wish to make use of your experiences with distance learning/teaching in the field of integrating the four skills-listening, speaking, reading, and writing- in the language course.
Note: the context of teaching is Algeria, hence, some limitations exist concerning the availability of internet and computers.
Relevant answer
Answer
Online or distance teaching has its implications on learners. One of the direct consequences of distance learning is the type of educational platform an institution adopts and uses. Features of these platforms determine which skill is prevalent and more rapid in use. I have found interactive oral skills to be most affected followed by writing and then reading. Students listen most of the time while attending online classes with less willingness/chances to interact verbally.

Since the decline of audiolingualism, there was bias towards speech in language teaching for communicative ends. Though, the stress on speaking rather than writing produces fluent but inaccurate learners (Hughes, 1983).
Relevant answer
Answer
Learning to speak comes first, in all evolutionary terms for the human species.
Writing (numbers included) is there and emerged to solidify our language foundation and communication.
It has factually a mental function to be precise, exact and clear=understandable over a distance. However, as we know from language archeology, it is not an easy task to re-translate a written text into spoken language, if the line of tradition got somehow lost, e.g. we can read Plato, but have no authentic phonetics. This is especially critical with sacred texts, where authorities claim to be orthodox.

In addition, a markdown file could help to summarise the basic steps of the codes.

I recently published the first professional article on male solosexuality, a sexual identity and set of associated sexual practices focusing on communal masturbation and veneration of the penis.
This was a difficult article for me to adequately convey all of the permutations of this new topic. There is just so much to say. I am now seeking a group of collaborators to write commentary that can serve as a "response" paper.
I am interested in experts from the fields of human sexuality, masculinities studies, postmodern identity constructions, and other diverse fields to contribute some commentary that can help frame this discussion from a multitude of perspectives.
Please let me know if you -- or someone you know -- might be interested in contributing to this project.

Jonas Chisi Thank you for your offer. I appreciate your support. Ideally I would like to attract commentaries from co-authors who have previous publication history and from your bio you are on the early stage of your career. This is fine, everybody has to start somewhere, but it does mean that I have no opportunity to review your writing beforehand.
So if you have read the solosexuality article my next step would be to ask you to send me some initial thoughts about how you would structure your proposed commentary. If you have any examples of your writing to share that helps too.
Since I see you are in Malawi there is value in examining worldwide cultural perspectives on this form of sexual expression.
Feel free to respond privately. I couldn't figure out how to respond to you other than publicly. Perhaps my response can help others.
Thank you again for your interest in this fascinating expression of male sexuality.

LaTeX is better than Word for displaying multilevel mathematical equations. The online tool Overleaf is providing more and more functions that are similar to those available in Word, including spell check. Overleaf has a free version and a paid version that offers more. If I must use LaTeX, it is easier in Overleaf.
That said, if the equation capabilities in Word are sufficient for the purpose, the rest of the ease and control available in Word makes it more attractive to me.

You collect and analyze data, finally you get to write your findings. Time pass and the text get outdated. You are way beyond that research, working with new and more interesting stuff. Nevertheless, you feel a moral obligation to make your findings public, as it used time and money of so many people.
You decide to update the manuscript with state-of-the-art analysis. You invite new collaborators and start to work. Your collaborators behave as reviewers and just point out weaknesses and criticize (a lot), without substantial help. You finally submit it and after a couple of rejections you got a minor review. You are busy (and more interested in your actual work) and feel the weight of carry it alone since your collaborators are sharper and fiercer than the actual reviewers…
You got sick of the manuscript and starts to wonder if you should get on with it or invest the time in your actual research…You get bored 5 seconds after opening the document to edition... You even start to evaluate if your results are that interesting anyway...
Brothers and sisters of science, who among you would share your experiences on this kind of situation?
Relevant answer
First, data never gets outdated. So, believing that will help you to be motivated. Second, you found it interesting at the time, so it's still worthwhile. Third, don't listen to collaborators. They will always be negative because that's just the way most people are. Listen to yourself! Fourth, keep going until it's accepted. Fifth, boredom is not being caused by your study, it's caused by low psychological energy and trouble focusing attention. So, put all the negative thoughts aside and try harder! :)

Population Simulation Problem: I need someone to collaborate in writing a population simulation program incorporating kinship rules of endogamy/exogamy, mating rules, territory and carrying capacity.
I am an evolutionary sociologist and author of a new multi-species population theory, which I can demonstrate in diagrams (also published in books). I want to have it expressed mathematically but need help for this.
Then I want help to model this theory, simulating populations, to show how different kinship and marriage rules, responsive to local environmental feedback, produce different fertility opportunities, beyond the predator/prey/density models, but I cannot write programs.
So, I need someone to add to an extant population simulation program or write a new one, so that I will be able to run variations myself. I would acknowledge the program writer as a contributor to the theory.
This could be a good new thesis basis for a program writer and life-sciences grad. Our work would need to be confidential prior to publication. Maybe more than one person could be involved. I welcome any advice as to what would be necessary.

We have known for some time the link between words, writing and well-being, and practitioners have been deploying alternative approaches for years (e.g. counsellors, psychotherapists, artists, poets, NLP practitioners, hypnotists, etc).
Indeed, Bakhtin, Lacan, Zizek, all point to varying levels of self-authorship to write one's identities and ways of being - and that these have consequences on how we relate to and engage in the world (and of course, therefore, implications for well-being).
What sources, if any, summarise this empirical or practical work? What sources bring the different perspectives or occupational groups together?

Google Docs is an excellent tool for collaborative writing and authoring. My master's cohort used it extensively both in and out of class. The docs have the ability to perform a search of related topics from within the application, no need to open a separate tab for searching. Slides are an easy way to share ideas with a focus on the visual; it also allows for embedding of YouTube videos. Finally, Google Hangouts allows for video chat with recording as well as text chatting for collaboration.

I am planning to conduct a research on students writing motivation before, while and after taking collaborative writing tasks via wikis. I am planning to adapt a questionnaire to measure motivation before and after taking 5 tasks via wikis. the tasks will be one task for an hour each week. The tasks will be for 5 weeks. However, I am wondering how I could measure students writing motivation during taking these tasks.
Relevant answer
Answer
I think the approach suggested by Laura Elizabeth Pinto is a good one. Interview them shortly after they complete each writing task. You could pose specific questions relating to their motivations and thoughts about writing, while having them refer to their written wiki submission. Referring to the written piece will help stimulate more accurate recall of their thoughts and feeling while writing. If you do the interview right after the task, the students' thoughts about their writing process will still be fresh in their minds.

HEALTHCARE PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIPS AND INFRASTRUCTURAL SUPPLY CHAIN SUSTAINABILITY
1.      Purpose  The research question of this paper is to examine how infrastructural investments, coordinated with their underlying supply chains (SCs) and fostered by Public Private Partnerships (PPP), can enhance systemic sustainability.
2.      Design/methodology/approach  This research paper starts from literature gaps about sustainable supply chains. An empirical case of healthcare infrastructural supply chains is then examined and generalized according to an inductive approach.
3.      Findings  Provided that sustainable SCs naturally rely on sound and lasting infrastructures, PPP can promote integrated and long-lasting SCs. Financial and economic sustainability can precede social and environmental resilience. Public subsidies are necessary, but sustainability reduces their burden for taxpayers.
4.      Research limitations/implications   PPP healthcare supply chains represent a peculiar case, which may need adjustments to be generalized. Environmental concerns need further analysis.
5.      Practical implications  Increasing awareness of sustainability drivers can improve resilience and flexibility of public healthcare supply chains, to the benefit of patients and taxpayers.
6.      Social implications   Sustainable healthcare SCs provide better cares, outreaching more patients.
7.      Originality/value   This study simultaneously addresses the theoretical nature of infrastructural SC and considers their sustainability within a PPP multi-stakeholder context.

Question

Scenario: One is going to write a book. Instead of writing it down in a closed environment and afterwards and publishing, each chapter (or the whole book) is presented to a community for comments. For "fiction authors" this is common practice since many years in the form that they present their ideas for the next books and the fan community comments or even makes suggestions what they would expect next. In the scientific context, this practice gets more and more common. Do the benefits overweight the risks of being copied before the publication finally is proceeded? Are there opportunities to secure the intellectual property rights in such a process? Do I maybe worry about the wrong things?
Relevant answer
Answer
Thomas,
Project-based research and action research with related reporting about progress would perhaps be closest to what you are asking here. The idea of the open book fits well here because, typically, your project financiers would be happy to have all their project participants communicate more, and to 'disseminate' widely about the insights gained, as they saying goes. When you write during the project or action process, it makes you stop and reflect, which is beneficial for the project or action itself. If everything is negotiated and done in a fair way, all writers get a chance to contribute and collaborate.
Provided the projcet/action time constraints are not too tight and the deadlines are not impossible, the texts you write in order to disseminate gradually evolve into something that really makes a good book with nice chapters. I have seen this happen in a couple of cases.
As to the downsides and risks with the open book, I think a majority of its readers and writers would assign less value and a lower status to an open book compared to traditional formats and arenas of research communication. People supporting the idea of the open book would have to take a big risk and work very hard for its success because the print-format book stands out.
You do not worry about the wrong things at all if you can answer these questions: How should we design a workable referee and/or editing process for an open book; we still need one, I think. How does it work, compared to a refereed journal or the traditional book with editors? What are the inidvidual rewards of contributing to the referee and/or editing process (in symbolic or material terms)?
You would easily get people to give their diverse (appropriate or misplaced) comments about the text being processed for the open book, but the referees and/or the editors are the real gate-keepers with the best expertise and the most power - whether you like it or not.
