Hi everyone,
I'm currently co-supervising a project that aims to recruit a sample of participants living in China. I was wondering if anyone knows of a platform that can be used (similar to Prolific) where funds can be transferred to the platform to pay participants?
Steff
Relevant answer
Answer
Hi Stephanie,
Here’s an update as of 2024. As far as I know, there aren’t any platforms in China that are fully comparable to Amazon MTurk or Prolific. The closest alternatives are “questionnaire” platforms, where you can design and distribute surveys. However, these platforms don’t handle payment transfers—you’ll need to distribute funds to participants manually.
I’m currently running an online experiment and recruiting participants in China, and I’ve come to realise just how challenging this process can be.
Best,
Qing

Nations across the globe could see their power rise or fall depending on how they harness and manage the development of artificial intelligence (AI). Regardless of whether AI poses an existential risk to humanity, governments will need to develop new regulatory frameworks to identify, evaluate, and respond to the variety of AI-enabled challenges to come.
With the release of advanced forms of AI to the public early in 2023, public policy debates have rightly focused on such developments as the exacerbation of inequality, the loss of jobs, and the potential threat of human extinction if AI continues to evolve without effective guardrails. There has been less discussion about how AI might affect geopolitics and which actors might take the lead in the future development of AI or other advanced AI algorithms.
As AI continues to advance, geopolitics may never be the same. Humans organized in nation-states will have to work with another set of actors—AI-enabled machines—of equivalent or greater intelligence and, potentially, highly disruptive capabilities. In the age of geotechnopolitics, human identity and human perceptions of our roles in the world will be distinctly different; monumental scientific discoveries will emerge in ways that humans may not be able to comprehend. Consequently, the AI development path that ultimately unfolds will matter enormously for the shape and contours of the future world.
Source: AI and Geopolitics: How Might AI Affect the Rise and Fall of Nations? https://www.rand.org/pubs/perspectives/PEA3034-1.html
  • The emergence of generative AI marks a transformational moment that will influence the course of markets and alter the balance of power among nations. Increasingly capable machine intelligence will profoundly impact matters of growth, productivity, competition, national defense and human culture. In this swiftly evolving arena, corporate and political leaders alike are seeking to decipher the implications of this abrupt and powerful wave of innovation, exploring new opportunities and navigating new risks.
  • The world is facing a narrow window of opportunity – what we call the inter-AI years – to shape the AI-enabled future. This window will be brief – a few years at most – then views and strategies will harden; norms, values, standards will be embedded within the technology; and the costs of changing course will rise. While AI-enabled technology will continue to progress, decisions made today will determine what is possible in the future. A generative world order will emerge.
  • The US and China are the world’s top AI competitors, but they are also the top AI collaborators. However, in generative AI, most of the cutting-edge innovations today are coming from the US, and China faces an uphill in training LLMs, for now. This technology competition will see geopolitical priorities drive economic decision-making, including through export controls, sanctions, tariffs, industrial policy, investment screening, and other measures deployed to increase absolute and relative advantages.

Biochar improves all soil properties, especially the physical ones, as it improves soil aeration, which enhances and activates microbial activity. In addition, it has a large surface area that improves the composition and porosity of the soil. All of these properties improve soil moisture content and the ability of the soil to retain moisture, which is positively reflected in plant growth.

Relevant answer
Answer
What is science diplomacy?
"While science diplomacy has been around for centuries, it’s only recently been well defined as it became more relevant than ever. The concept came into clear focus in 2010, when the UK’s Royal Society and American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) published a joint document titled, “New Frontiers in Science Diplomacy,” and the term has since gained mass traction. Science diplomacy is the process by which researchers and research institutions across the globe work together on research and technology endeavours, whether that’s through individual projects or the signing of treaties such as the Paris Agreement.
Science diplomacy involves interactions between multiple sectors, including nonprofit organisations, governments and the science community. Those that support science diplomacy maintain science is an international enterprise with shared goals and values. However, science and innovation have long been one of the primary ways in which nations compete and gain power. Not only that, but developing new technology is also crucial in protecting national security. This can, of course, create strain between countries..."

The China-African trade policy has been one sided since inception. China's main OFDI priority has been to target resource rich African nations with huge markets and very poor institutional quality index.
The policy is mixed and deceptive because it focuses on few resource poor African nations BUT with huge market, highly unskilled-cheap labour workforce with very corrupt leaders.
Most resource rich African nations are indebted to China with repayments plans skewed in China's trade interest.
Thus, making it arguably that China-Africa trade relations will end up with
the economic colonisation of most African nations by China.
Relevant answer
Answer
Yes, it is possible to substantiate that China-Africa trade relations can resemble a new form of colonization in some African nations. Critics highlight several factors:
Debt dependency is a major concern, as extensive Chinese lending to African countries can lead to significant debt burdens. This dependency may result in a loss of sovereignty, with countries compelled to align their policies with Chinese interests to secure debt relief or additional loans.
Additionally, the focus of Chinese investments on resource extraction often benefits local economies minimally, reflecting exploitative practices similar to those seen during colonial times. There are also issues regarding labor practices in Chinese enterprises, where local workers may face underpayment and poor working conditions, mirroring colonial-era labor dynamics.
Finally, China's growing influence raises alarms about political leverage. The "no-strings-attached" approach in trade and investment can undermine democratic governance and human rights in recipient countries, reflecting patterns reminiscent of colonial control.
These arguments are supported by various analyses and research on the dynamics of China-Africa relations.

Before now natural rubber producers have always been advice by experts to reduce production/supply whenever there is fall in price of natural rubber. The recent fall in the price of natural rubber is not as a result of over supply/low demand of the produce but as a result of the trade war between the USA and China. What advice will you give to the natural rubber producers
Relevant answer
Answer
To tackle the effects of low rubber prices in the international market, natural rubber producers can improve production efficiency by adopting modern agricultural practices and technologies, which can help reduce costs. Exploring alternative markets and developing value-added products can create new revenue streams, such as processed rubber goods. Additionally, forming cooperatives can strengthen bargaining power and optimize resource sharing among producers, enabling better market access and pricing. Investing in sustainable farming practices may command higher prices in eco-conscious markets and enhance production resilience. Finally, staying informed about market trends and adjusting production strategies accordingly can help maintain competitiveness during price fluctuations.

Given the ongoing geopolitical and economic developments, especially over the past decade, the term "Rise of China" has frequently been used to describe China's growing influence. However, with China's established role as a global power across various sectors, does the term "rise" still accurately reflect China's current position in the international system? Or is it time to adopt new terminology or perspectives to describe this increasing influence?
Thank you for your insights
Relevant answer
Answer
China is still a developing country and many Chinese are still very poor when compared to Western countries. I think "rise" is still an accurate word to describe China's trend.

Welcome to 中和明...
Architectural Implications:
Central Layout (Zhong): The building’s circular design, inspired by a banquet table, naturally reflects the idea of centrality and balance, where all regions are equally positioned around a central point, representing balanced governance.
Harmonious Integration (He): The gardens, ponds, and green rooftops represent harmony between humanity and nature, ensuring that the environment and people coexist in a balanced, peaceful way. The natural elements create a sense of collaboration and unity, where the landscape and architecture are seamlessly integrated.
Enlightened Structure (Ming): The use of natural light, open spaces, and clear glass elements reflects clarity and transparency in governance, symbolizing enlightened decision-making. The structure is designed to inspire wisdom and foresight, with the building layout promoting open dialogue and collaborative thinking.
Relevant answer
Answer
The design of the one-floor circular building for the new China Federation, inspired by a Chinese banquet table, reflects deep underlying principles of political processes and federal governance. This design is not arbitrary—it emerges from a set of political realities, goals, and constraints that have shaped its architectural form. Let’s reverse engineer how the political process might have constrained and influenced the building's design.
1. Equality and Autonomy of Regions
Political Context:
The federation’s structure is based on the principle that China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Tibet, and Xinjiang should each maintain autonomy within the larger federal system. This political balance means that no region should dominate, but rather, each should have equal access to shared governance and resources.
Architectural Reflection:
Circular Design: The building’s circular layout, inspired by a banquet table, ensures that all regions are equally distant from the center and equally integrated into the decision-making process. There are no corridors of power leading to a dominant central hub, reflecting the idea that each region’s autonomy is respected within the federation.
Fluid Access: The lack of barriers and corridors, replaced by organic pathways through gardens and natural spaces, symbolizes that every region has an equal and open path to participate in the federal process. This promotes transparency and fluid interaction between the regions, with no hierarchy implied by the building’s structure.
2. Federal Collaboration Over Centralized Control
Political Context:
The political process likely required a system that emphasizes collaboration over centralized authority. The federal government acts as a coordinating body, but real decision-making power is distributed among the regions. This is crucial in ensuring that regional autonomy is preserved while maintaining federal unity.
Architectural Reflection:
Absence of a Central Hub: The decision to eliminate the dominant central hub in favor of equal access areas reflects a political system that resists centralization. By avoiding a central "power core," the design symbolizes that no single entity controls the federal process—rather, it is shared among the regions.
Open Meeting Spaces: The open-air seating areas are spread across the site, integrated into the natural environment, to symbolize that decision-making should be collaborative and grounded in both the people and nature. Meetings and discussions happen throughout the building, not in a single isolated location, reinforcing the idea of distributed governance.
3. Respect for Cultural Diversity
Political Context:
The federation is composed of diverse regions, each with its own cultural identity, history, and governance needs. The political process must respect and integrate this diversity, ensuring that cultural expression is preserved while promoting unity.
Architectural Reflection:
Subtle Cultural Motifs: Each region’s section features subtle references to its cultural architecture, ensuring that while the building is unified, it does not impose a single cultural identity. This mirrors the federal political process, where regional cultures are respected and preserved within the overall governance structure.
Cultural and Community Spaces: The integration of cultural exchange areas within the gardens and seating spaces reflects the need for inter-regional dialogue. These spaces allow for cultural events and discussions, acknowledging that the political process includes not just governance but also cultural diplomacy.
4. Environmental Sustainability and Governance
Political Context:
The political process likely emphasizes environmental responsibility and sustainability as core governance principles, driven by both domestic needs and international pressures. The building must reflect these values as they are critical to the federation’s long-term goals.
Architectural Reflection:
Green Rooftops and Solar Panels: The green rooftops, which are not only aesthetic but functional, reflect a commitment to sustainability. They reduce energy consumption, promote biodiversity, and ensure that the building operates with minimal environmental impact.
Integration of Nature: The use of gardens, orchards, ponds, and other natural features reflects the political goal of living in harmony with nature. These elements symbolize that the political process must be in tune with the environment, and that decisions made within the building must consider environmental impact as a priority.
Feng Shui Principles: The design's adherence to Feng Shui principles reflects a desire for balance not just in governance but also in how the building interacts with the natural world. This symbolizes a political approach that seeks harmony in decision-making and sustainable governance practices.
5. Inclusivity and Accessibility
Political Context:
The political system demands inclusivity, ensuring that every region, every representative, and every citizen feels they have access to the federal process. Inclusivity, both politically and physically, is key to maintaining trust and ensuring participation in the system.
Architectural Reflection:
Stepping Stones and Organic Pathways: The building’s design emphasizes organic, natural pathways that connect every section, symbolizing that every region and individual has a clear and accessible path to decision-making spaces. The stepping stones over ponds reflect that access is natural and free-flowing, not obstructed by bureaucratic or physical barriers.
Fluid Layout: The fluid layout ensures that every section is equally accessible, symbolizing a political commitment to inclusivity and transparency. No part of the building is cut off or harder to reach, reflecting that the political process is open to all participants.
6. Balancing Tradition and Modernity
Political Context:
The federation must strike a balance between modern governance principles and the traditions and cultural practices that each region values. This balance is critical to maintaining political stability while driving the country forward into the future.
Architectural Reflection:
Modern Materials with Subtle Tradition: The use of modern architectural materials (glass, steel, and stone) symbolizes the forward-thinking nature of the federation, while the subtle integration of cultural motifs reflects the need to respect tradition. This balance mirrors the political challenge of being progressive while honoring the past.
Open-Air Spaces: The inclusion of open-air meeting spaces and integration with nature reflect a commitment to traditional concepts of harmony and balance, aligning with cultural values while also embracing modern governance practices.
---
In Short:
The design of this building for the new China Federation is a direct response to the political constraints and governance goals that define the federation's approach. By emphasizing equality, collaboration, inclusivity, and sustainability, the architecture not only reflects how the federation is structured but also how decisions are made. The design integrates modern governance principles with cultural respect and environmental responsibility, symbolizing a balanced and harmonious future for the regions involved.

You can try a slightly more complex approach by starting from social theories such as constructivism and institutionalism, or you can lean towards rational choice theory or backlash theory. It depends a lot on the aspects you want to study in your paper because some theories focus on individual behavior, others on group logic, and others on social constructs. So, the choice goes hand in hand with the central piece of your work: institutions, behavior, public speech, political choice...

In my postgraduate classes at the University, and in our 360-degree FORUMS especially the Speakers' Corner, the issues surrounding the current CLASH OF TITANS: USA VS CHINA were raised for open trade debates. it is clearly apparent that BOTH superpowers could not see themselves engaged in such a futile trade war which will provide no sustainable solution to both sides at the end of the thin red line. What is a workable solution that could resolve the fundamental differences? And how smaller countries could in fact devise a STRATEGIC PLAN for a FINAL SOLUTION for the benefit of mankind as a whole?

What would have to happen for China to invade Taiwan?
Relevant answer
Answer
Several circumstances could potentially lead to an armed conflict between China and Taiwan:
1. Declaration of Independence by Taiwan: If Taiwan were to formally declare independence from China, it could provoke a military response from Beijing, which considers Taiwan a breakaway province that must be reunited with the mainland.
2. Refusal to Accept "One China" Policy: Taiwan refusing to accept the "One China" principle, which asserts that there is only one sovereign state under the name China, could escalate tensions. China sees this policy as non-negotiable and any rejection could prompt aggressive actions.
3. External Intervention: Military support or alliances between Taiwan and other countries, particularly the United States, could lead to a direct confrontation with China, given Beijing's strong objections to foreign interference in what it considers its internal affairs.
4. Domestic Political Factors: Changes in leadership in either Taiwan or China that advocate more assertive or aggressive policies towards each other could increase the likelihood of conflict.
5. Misinterpretation or Miscalculation: Accidental military encounters, miscommunications, or misunderstandings between military forces on either side could escalate quickly into a larger conflict.
6. Economic or Strategic Considerations: Disputes over economic interests, such as control over trade routes or access to resources in the South China Sea, could also contribute to heightened tensions and potentially military responses.
It's important to note that while tensions between China and Taiwan have existed for decades, both sides have generally avoided direct military confrontation, opting instead for political and economic pressure tactics. However, the situation remains volatile, and any escalation could have significant regional and global implications. Efforts to maintain stability and peaceful dialogue between the two sides are crucial to preventing armed conflict.

The expression "Je t'aime, moi non plus: I love you, neither do I", popularized by the song by Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin in 1969, refers to tumultuous and contradictory relationships that can be strong, intense, see passionate, but, at the same time, imbued with uncertainties, doubts, and ambiguities that underlie real difficulties likely to make the relations complex unstable or even unhealthy. So "Je t'aime moi non plus" can somehow be applied to describe the Europe-Africa relations steeped in a common history that is not always brilliant and, in another register, to Europe-USA-ASIA relations where the Ego, the Culture, and the Will to Power sometimes lead to conflicting competitive situations.
It is therefore a very open subject on which I would like us to rub our points of view, ideas, and visions in order to promote serene and useful exchanges.

Answer
Your phrase, "USA<-->Europe<-->Africa : Je t'aime, moi non plus!" suggests a complicated relationship between these continents, with a mix of love and indifference.
It could be interpreted as:
- A commentary on the complex historical, cultural, and political ties between these regions
- A reflection of the push-and-pull dynamics of globalization, trade, and migration
- A nod to the contradictions of international relations, where cooperation and conflict coexist

Hi there,
Recently I've been exhausted with my EMSA, I'd appreciate it if anyone could offer me some advice. Please see the attachment for detailed information, and here are my questions:
1, I'm not sure which band refers to a positive reaction, I originally thought the band in box-2 resulted from my xProtein(76aa, about 10kDa) binding to DNA, but the 3/4/8/9# well is weird (free probe con. increased and even stronger band in box-2). Also, I got some smear bands in box-1, which look like binding results, but I'm not sure about it now. Since EGFP tag is much larger than HA tag, so I think the bands in box-2 may be due to unspecific binding.
2, If there are no specific binding in the attachment, why the free probe in 2/5/7/10# well decrease dramatically?
3, I'm pretty open to any suggestions for my EMSA experiments, to facilitate your understanding, I list some detailed information about my EMSA here:
ThermoFisher—NEPER Nuc Cytoplasmic Extract Reag;
EMSA 3' biotin labeling Kit (Produced in China)
EMSA LightShift™ Chemiluminescent EMSA Kit (Produced in China)

Thanks a lot for your kind help.

looking a second time to your gel : you are in large excess of biotin-probe as a lot of it stayed a the bottom of the gel;
maybe using less cell extract you will shift all the probe unless a fraction of the probe is not functional
as you added the cold probe before (which is the right thing to do) it means that box2 complex is not desplaced by the cold probe= could box2 be the results of a protein binding to the biotin part of the probe?
I would definitively try an EMSA with untransfected cell extracts; this will tell you if the box2 or box1 comples is the one you are looking for.
for the antibodies: the ha antibody does not do a lot to the complexes (could the HA tag be inaxessible? the eGFP antibody slot maybe you have a gel loading pb as there is less free probe in this slot...

Hello Researchers, hope you are doing well.
I have to see Revealed Comparative Advantage between India and China for specific product. I went thru several related literature and found different formula to calculate BRCA.
May you tell me which formula will be more appropriate?
Details:
Formula 1:
BRCA kab =
(Xkab /Xab)/(Xkwb /Xwb)
Where BRCA kab is the bilateral revealed comparative advantage of India with Australia for the commodity k,
Xkab is the export of commodity k from India) to Australia,
Xab is the total exports from India to Australia,
Xkwb is the total exports of the world of commodity k to Australia and
Xwb is the total exports of the world to Australia.

Formula 2:
BRCAij=
(XijA/XiA)/(XijB/XiB)
Where:
BRCAij is the Bilateral Revealed Comparative advantage of country A in industry j relative to country B.
XijA is the exports of country A in industry j.
XiA is the total exports of country A across all industries.
XijB is the exports of country B in industry j.
XiB is the total exports of country B across all industries.

Formula 3:
BRCA =
(Xkij /Xij)/(Xkiw /Xiw)
Where
X= export
I= exporter country
J= destination country
W= world
K= product

(Source 2: TINA- the Trade Intelligence and Negotiation Adviser, Final Draft, 20 Jan 2021, version 1)
Formula 4:
BRCA1 kijw =
(Xkiw/Xiw)/(Xkjw/Xjw)
Where:
i= exporter country
j= destination country
w= world
k= product

Please tell me which formula will be more appropriate? And what are the differences among these formulas? why there are several formula to calculate BRCA?

Answer
Good morning.Yes, there are many (more) ways of estimating revealed comparative advantages. Just to increase the confusion, I made a comparative review of different approaches in:
As for your specific question, in the case of bilateral comparison, I would go for the simple ratios you mention, comparing the results of standard formula (multilateral RCA computed on total World trade) and RCA computed only on bilateral trade.
If there is a large difference, then something different than standard comparative advantages is at work.
By the way, when looking at bilateral trade, it seems natural (but I did not look in details) to compute i to j exports and j to i exports to take into consideration two-ways trade. Some formulas include also two-ways trade when calculating standard (multilateral) RCAs.
Hope it helps.

Dear colleagues
I have to prepare a document for Oxford University Publishing group that follows an unusual way of listing references. It requires that references meet two conditions:
  1. All are numbered with a superscript in the main text (this is simple to achieve)
  2. All instances of a citation are assigned their own unique number in the bibliography, even if a citation is repeated in the main text. This is an unusual requirement and is where I require assistance.
I am using EndNote software and was hoping that somebody could advise me now to ensure that the EndNote output style assigns a NEW number for each reference cited in the main text, even if that reference has already been cited earlier in the text.
For example, the following text must appear in the list of references as follows:
“In France, the winters are warming [1,2]. In China, the same problem is occurring [3]
** In this example, [3] is the same citation source as [1] but needs a NEW number in the list of references.
List of references
1. Smith, G. 2020. Winters in France. Journal ABC 12(1): 1-10
2. White, Y. 2021. Winters in the world. Journal XYZ 1(1): 10-20
3. The information for reference 1 would be repeated here, but in an abbreviated format like “Smith, G. 2020. Winters in France”.
Could somebody please instruct me how to achieve this style in EndNote software or inform me if there is an output style for EndNote I can download?
Thank you.
Relevant answer
Answer
Dear Gregory Trencher, to ensure that citations in EndNote are repeated correctly without creating footnotes, you can follow a straightforward process. First, insert citations in your document using EndNote's "Insert Citation" feature. When you need to cite the same source again, simply insert the same citation at the desired location without re-adding it to EndNote. Ensure your document is set to the appropriate citation style by navigating to "Edit" > "Output Styles" > "Open Style Manager" in EndNote and selecting the desired style. This will ensure consistent formatting for repeated citations. If necessary, customize the citation style by editing the citation templates under "Citations" > "Templates" in the style editor, specifying how repeated citations should appear. Finally, use the "Update Citations and Bibliography" feature in your document to apply the correct formatting throughout. This method ensures that your citations are repeated accurately within the text, without generating footnotes.
I hope this will help you, I wish you success.

Do you want people to die in earthquakes?
You saw: two days before the earthquake in Taiwan, I had a reliable precursor - a KaY-wave anomaly.
Today I checked for an anomaly in China. It was there, although not very big.
At the same time, I saw a “distant anomaly”. Somewhere it will shake again. There will be casualties.
But I cannot make a forecast and protect lives with one station. You need at least 5 - 6 stations.
What to do? Are we going to watch people die?

Answer
I have forecasted, more earthquakes without anything,
The earthquake can be traced back to a simple natural phenomenon:
Let's see what Alexander Yagodin wrote:
'Here is how I found the most reliable harbinger.
'A gravitational-seismic wave carries energy from the periphery to the place where the earthquake will occur.' [This sentence is excellent, But you don't have a theoretical explanation for why this is... I know why! Ask Yagodin why this iswhat else needs to be known, based on this, the earthquake forecast will still be uncertain, ]
'This is already the penultimate stage.' ˙[This is true, only this pronunciation should be clarified]
'The wave carries energy to the site of the future epicenter. I measure its energy at seismic stations. [This is an interesting sentence again... Correct, only in this form should further explanation be necessary]'
'If there are no anomalies at seismic stations, then there will be no earthquake. If there is an anomaly, then there will be an earthquake. The greater the amplitude of the KaY wave at stations, the greater the magnitude of the future earthquake.' [Accurate Earthquake prediction requires much more information... For this to work, another similar method is needed.]
'If this is clear, please let me know.
I will show the next article, where it is clear that the KaY wave is a ring with a diameter of thousands of kilometers. This ring shrinks towards the middle...'
[I have an opinion on this. But Alexandr knows better than what he means
If you need my advice in Afghanistan, I will gladly accept it']
Study my writing... and the next discussion:
If I had 150,000 subscribers on my YouTube channel (Geo-intuition)', I'd have a lot more to say...

Is anyone in this field able to recommend their own or others' research into the topic of how Brazil's economic dependence on other countries (including the United States, China, and Russia) affects its current/previous foreign policy? So far I've learnt that Brazil is highly dependant on commodities, that the U.S. remains its largest contributor of FDI, trade and imports to China and US largely revolve around agriculture, and that imports of Russian gas into Brazil have soared recently. I've managed to research Brazil's foreign policy more generally, under Lula.
For context, I'm an IR student at the University of Exeter, currently producing a case study into topic for a module titled 'international politics of the global south'. I'd therefore much appreciate recommendations to sources that approach this issue in some way, from a political lens, or any other advice you may have to offer.
Thank you very much!
Relevant answer
Hello Thomas! I’ve analyzed the situation and I might offer some insights. According to Brazilian experts, the country’s foreign policy is closely tied to its economic climate. In a way, the Brazilian president’s international engagement hinges on favorable domestic conditions. For instance, during Lula’s first term (2003-2010), economic growth, effective income distribution policies, and a commodities boom (including soy, oil, and minerals—major exports, especially to China) provided ample room for foreign policy maneuvers. However, after the 2008 crisis and the subsequent period, Brazil’s economy faced challenges under Dilma Rousseff (2011-2016). Some argue that unfavorable domestic factors—such as the waning commodity boom, rising food and fuel prices, and heavy reliance on highways—impacted Dilma’s foreign policy trajectory. Best of luck with your case study!

What are the human security implications of 'corona virus spread' around the world?
Relevant answer
Answer
Dear Esteemed Reader,
The spread of the coronavirus, specifically referring to the COVID-19 pandemic caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, has posed unprecedented challenges to human security around the globe. The impacts of this pandemic extend far beyond the immediate health crisis, affecting various dimensions of human security, including economic stability, access to essential services, social cohesion, and the functioning of governance systems. Below, we delve into the multifaceted ways in which the spread of the coronavirus threatens human security worldwide.
1. Health Security:The most direct impact of the coronavirus is on health security. The rapid spread of the virus has overwhelmed healthcare systems in many countries, leading to a shortage of medical supplies, hospital beds, and healthcare personnel. This situation has not only jeopardized the care for COVID-19 patients but also disrupted routine healthcare services, affecting the management of other diseases and health conditions.
2. Economic and Livelihood Security:The pandemic has triggered a global economic downturn, affecting livelihoods, increasing unemployment rates, and exacerbating poverty. Lockdown measures, while necessary to contain the virus's spread, have led to the closure of businesses, disruptions in global supply chains, and significant losses in income for workers and families. The economic impact is particularly severe for vulnerable populations and those working in informal sectors.
3. Food Security:Disruptions in agricultural production and supply chains have raised concerns over food security. In some regions, the pandemic has affected food availability and accessibility, increasing the risk of hunger and malnutrition. The economic fallout from the pandemic further compounds food insecurity, as more individuals and families struggle to afford basic necessities.
4. Social Security:The pandemic has strained social fabrics, leading to increased isolation, mental health issues, and domestic violence. Social distancing measures, while crucial for public health, have disrupted traditional support systems and community networks. The situation is exacerbated by the stigma and discrimination associated with COVID-19, affecting certain groups more profoundly.
5. Political and Community Security:The coronavirus has tested the resilience of governance and political systems. In some cases, it has led to the postponement of elections, restricted civic freedoms, and heightened tensions among communities. The effectiveness of governmental responses to the pandemic has also become a source of public scrutiny, influencing trust in public institutions.
6. International Security:On a global scale, the pandemic has impacted international relations and cooperation. Issues such as vaccine nationalism, restrictions on travel, and competition for medical resources have highlighted the challenges of managing a global health crisis in a politically fragmented world. The pandemic underscores the need for strengthened international cooperation and solidarity to address shared threats.
In conclusion, the spread of the coronavirus represents a profound threat to human security, touching upon all aspects of life. Addressing these challenges requires a holistic and coordinated approach that goes beyond immediate health responses, encompassing economic support, social protection, and international collaboration. As we navigate through and beyond this pandemic, the lessons learned will be crucial for building more resilient societies capable of withstanding future crises.
Should you require further insights or wish to discuss specific aspects in more detail, please do not hesitate to reach out.
Best regards,
With this protocol list, we might find more ways to solve this problem.

I'm currently working on a project that requires comprehensive banking sector data for countries like Pakistan, China, and other Southeast Asian nations. I am particularly interested in understanding the dynamics and trends within the banking industry. Could anyone share insights on where and how I can access such data? I'm exploring options for free sources, but if that's not available, what are the recommended platforms or databases for purchasing reliable banking sector data in these regions? Your guidance and suggestions would be immensely valuable. Thank you in advance!

The legit (exclusively Japanese) title (with website https://www.nihs.go.jp/library/hakkounen.htm ) is indeed Scopus indexed https://www.scopus.com/sourceid/40595 (and looking at Scopus content coverage published 7 papers in 2023 which corresponds with the real website’s info http://www.nihs.go.jp/library/eikenhoukoku/2023/000.pdf )

If you think outside the box, it is possible to see similarities and differences between the economy model used by china after the fall of the soviet bloc and the economy model used by the USA then and now. Knowing and understanding these similarities and differences can help to see the nature of inverse paradigm dynamics that may play in the future.
And this raises the question: In terms of equality and freedom, what are the similarities and the differences between the Chinese economy model and the USA economy model?
Can you see the similarities and the differences in this context?
If yes, please share them.
Respectfully yours;

In many areas of social significance, both the US and China are not number one. Far from it, the two often find themselves way down the list when compared to other countries. It is critical that we not lose sight of the fact that in many areas of life – from governance to healthcare to crime to the environment – the two countries have a lot of catching up to do.
Happiness is not the be all end all of life, but it’s not irrelevant either. And on this score the US and China do not fare particularly well, ranking 18 and 94, respectively, far behind Finland. The US ranks higher than China on metrics of democracy and freedom, but even there the US is far from preeminent, something we’ve witnessed in vivid terms the last few years.
The Gini coefficient, one of the most widely used metrics of inequality, shows that in 2019 the United States (0.481) and China (0.465) both still have highly unequal income distributions in absolute terms and relative to other countries.
Inequality was far lower in China in the late 1970s, but then soared following the launch of the “reform and opening” policies. Marketization succeeded in delivering decades of high overall growth, but a number of factors – among them corruption, credit policies favoring a shift of wealth from households to companies, privatization of SOEs, and an insufficient availability of welfare services – have raised inequality far higher than would otherwise be the case. It likely resulted in the share of public wealth (as a portion of national wealth) to drop from about 70 percent in 1978 to 35 percent by 2015.
Trends in the United States are similarly concerning. The bottom 50 percent of wage earners experienced a collapse in their share of the nation’s wealth between 1978 and 2015, from 20 percent to 12 percent of total income, while the top one-percent’s income share rose from 11 percent to 20 percent. Inequality was exacerbated by educational and wage policy failures, resulting in insufficient support for the underprivileged. In addition to this, as in China, the United States lacks a well-funded welfare state when compared with other advanced industrialized economies.

I am just GUESSING, NOT ADVOCATING
I have avoid addressing this topic for the obvious reasons that it´s highly sensitive and explosive. But having written about One Country, Two Systems 30 years ago...
what I would say should be treated as simply a time capsule for thinking about this mega-issue 30 years (i.e. 2053, when One Country, Two Systems have already expired in HK) from now...
Since there´s so much at stake for EVERY SIDES, my own perspectiveS are highly tinged by being IndoChinese (where Former South Vietnam does not exist within the Communists´conquest of US Imperialism), plus a decade in HK (1994 to 2003), and now having lived in Germany for many years (where Former Eastern Germany exists within the Triumph of the West).
I have tried to address an inter-related issue here obliquely in a way that confounds ResearchGate´s algorithms and other search engines. This entry is purely for HUMAN EYES:
My own SPECulation is buried here:
Mirror Mirror on the Wall, What Would It Take for China to Take Back Taiwan?
  • The PRC would need to go beyond it´s CCP versus KMT Origin Story based on THE LONG MARCH.
  • The TAIWAN QUESTION requires a Meta-Narrative that goes beyond the conquest of the PRC over the ROC.
  • The TAIWAN QUESTION is really a residue from the COLD WAR, much in the same way that Germany, Vietnam, and Korea were/ are broken into two systems.
  • Such a New Meta-Narrative would need to start with Zhou En Lai...
  • But better yet, is to overcome the REVULSION/ SELF-HATRED for anything imperial and revisit the narrative(s) of the Middle Kingdom...
What are the REPUBLIC NARRATIVES, be that THE PEOPLE´s REPUBLIC or REPUBLIC of CHINA?
The concept of a "republic" generally refers to a form of government in which the country is considered a "public matter," and political power is derived from the people or their elected representatives. In the context of ancient China, the term "republic" may not be the most accurate descriptor, as the political structures of ancient China were more diverse and often centered around monarchies, dynasties, and imperial rule.
However, if we broaden the scope to include later periods in Chinese history, particularly the 20th century, the idea of a republic becomes more relevant. The Republic of China (ROC) was established in 1912, following the overthrow of the Qing Dynasty and the end of imperial rule. The ROC marked a transition from dynastic monarchy to a more republican form of government. Sun Yat-sen, a key figure in the Xinhai Revolution, played a significant role in advocating for the establishment of a republic in China.
The meta-narrative of the Chinese Republic, particularly during its early years, could include:
  1. Nationalism: The overthrow of the Qing Dynasty and the establishment of the Republic of China were driven by a strong sense of nationalism. There was a desire to modernize and strengthen the country to counter external threats and regain its standing in the world.
  2. Modernization: The early leaders of the Republic of China, particularly Sun Yat-sen, sought to modernize the country. This included political, economic, and social reforms to bring China in line with Western powers and other modern nations.
  3. Struggles for Stability: The early decades of the 20th century in China were marked by internal strife, regional conflicts, and power struggles among different factions. The meta-narrative might involve the challenges of establishing a stable and unified government in the face of internal and external pressures.
  4. Ideological Shifts: The Republic of China witnessed ideological shifts, including the influence of different political ideologies such as nationalism, democracy, and socialism. These ideological dynamics contributed to the political landscape and struggles for governance.
It's important to note that the history of the Republic of China is complex and includes periods of war, foreign invasions, and internal conflicts, leading eventually to the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949. The narrative of the Chinese Republic is multifaceted and reflects the challenges and aspirations of a nation in transition from traditional to modern forms of governance.
What are the IMPERIAL NARRATIVES of the MIDDLE KINGDOM?
The term "Middle Kingdom" is often used to refer to ancient China, specifically during the period of the Zhou Dynasty (1046–256 BCE). However, it's crucial to note that the concept of a "meta-narrative" is a modern analytical framework, and applying it to ancient cultures requires some abstraction.
In the context of ancient China, the idea of a meta-narrative could be approached through the lens of historical and philosophical texts, such as the "Mandate of Heaven." The Mandate of Heaven was a political and religious concept used to legitimize the rule of the kings or emperors in ancient China. According to this idea, a ruler was granted the right to rule by divine approval, but this mandate could be withdrawn if the ruler failed to govern justly and in the best interests of the people.
Confucianism, Daoism, and Legalism are three major philosophical traditions that shaped the meta-narrative of ancient China:
  1. Confucianism: Emphasizing social harmony, ethical conduct, and filial piety, Confucianism had a profound impact on the political and social structure of ancient China. The meta-narrative here would involve the pursuit of a just and harmonious society through proper governance and moral behavior.
  2. Daoism (Taoism): Daoism, with its emphasis on the natural order (Dao) and the concept of Wu Wei (non-action), offered an alternative perspective. The meta-narrative could involve living in harmony with the Dao, advocating a more laissez-faire approach to governance and life.
  3. Legalism: Legalism, on the other hand, focused on strict laws and centralized control to maintain social order. The meta-narrative might revolve around the need for a strong, authoritarian government to prevent chaos and ensure stability.
The meta-narrative of the Middle Kingdom, therefore, could be seen as a complex interplay between these philosophical traditions, the dynamic relationship between rulers and the divine, and the ongoing quest for a balanced and just society.
It's important to approach these concepts with an understanding of the nuances and diversity of thought within ancient Chinese philosophy and not oversimplify the rich tapestry of ideas present in the historical and philosophical texts of the time.

Will China’s presence in Africa be a new form of colonialism? Can China and Africa develop win-win cooperation?
Relevant answer
Answer
It possibly can be and some would argue that it already is, however, as we have seen with Chinese presence in the Caribbean, there is a desire to appear benevolent and separate themselves from the oppressive western nations. So far, this is working in the Caribbean and African context as what is known is that European and North American incursions into both of these regions ended in catastrophe and massive wealth/resource extraction. At least with China, at this point, the benefit is outweighing the cost and much needed infrastructure is being put in place, particularly across East Africa, where it was purposefully under developed by the European entities that ruled during the age of Empire. It will be seen whether it will end as it has begun, with Africa benefitting from Chinese presence as an investor and a deterrent to other nations as the Chinese influence grows, or possibly end up with the same unequal system with a different superpower in charge.

A few days ago, I read a literature about urban lakes in China, called " High-resolution circa-2020 map of urban lakes in China", and I was a bit curious. How many urban lakes are there in the world?
Relevant answer
Answer
One could use the Urban-TEP data sets ( https://urban-tep.eu/#! ) like Global Urban Footprint (GUF) ".... 2015 Worldwide inventory of human settlements (urban & rural) using one global coverage of SAR data with 0.4 arcsec (~12 m) ground resolution collected by the satellites TerraSAR-X / TanDEM-X in 2011-2013." and / or the Human Settlement Layer - along with the 2015 The TimeScan-Landsat-2000 layer "... for such aspects as the state of vegetation, water cover, or bare ground (e.g., built-up, rock, soil). For each of the indices temporal statistics" and or the ESA Land Cover CCI dataset".
As Carl Alexander Frisk pointed out, such a global query would involve some complex taxonomy and lexicon issues to refine - the toponyms used by the locals will vary considerably, along with temporal variation ( ex. Global Surface Water 1984-2021 at https://global-surface-water.appspot.com/download ), i.e. a 'lake' frequently is also a 'reservoir', so if it is empty, is it still a 'lake' for your purposes. There are actually some more refined geomorphological definitions, but those are usually specific to domain and jurisdiction.
With some clever up front design effort along with being explicit about your definitions, you could come up with a 'count' via a relatively straightforward pipeline of simple raster operations.
