Older mothers exhibit resilience and a strong commitment to their child's well-being, resulting in favorable psychosocial outcomes.
Relevant answer
Answer
Pregnancy in advanced maternal age (typically defined as 35 years or older) can have various psychosocial outcomes, influenced by both biological and social factors. Globally, women with advanced maternal age may experience:
  1. Increased Anxiety and Stress: Concerns about potential pregnancy complications, such as genetic disorders, miscarriage, or labor difficulties, can lead to heightened anxiety and stress. This may be exacerbated by societal pressures or personal expectations.
  2. Social Stigma: In some cultures, there may be social stigma associated with having children later in life, leading to feelings of isolation or judgment. Women may face criticism or unsolicited advice from family members, peers, or the public.
  3. Relationship Dynamics: Advanced maternal age pregnancies may affect relationships, particularly with partners. Couples may experience shifts in their roles, responsibilities, and expectations. While some couples may experience strengthened bonds, others may face challenges in adjusting to the new dynamics.
  4. Increased Support Needs: Women may seek additional emotional and practical support from family, friends, or healthcare providers. The need for support can be heightened due to concerns about the physical demands of pregnancy or potential complications.
  5. Positive Psychological Outcomes: Some women report greater emotional maturity, financial stability, and a stronger sense of readiness for parenthood, leading to increased confidence and satisfaction with their decision to have children later in life.
  6. Impact on Career and Personal Goals: Advanced maternal age pregnancies may prompt women to reassess their career and personal goals, leading to shifts in priorities. This can sometimes create feelings of fulfillment, but it may also lead to challenges in balancing work, family, and personal aspirations.
Globally, the psychosocial outcomes of advanced maternal age pregnancies are shaped by a combination of individual, cultural, and societal factors. Addressing these challenges requires comprehensive healthcare support, mental health services, and societal awareness to ensure the well-being of these women and their families.

A Netflix film I viewed recently stimulated this research question - Mrs Chatterjee versus Norway. It focused on one of many cases in which the child-welfare agency of the Norwegian state denied Indian immigrant parents custody of their own children because they disapproved of Indian child-rearing practices. It reminded me of the 1960's 'scoops' in which child-welfare agencies of Canada's provincial governments removed Indigenous children from their natal families. In both , removal was claimed to be 'for the good of the child'...specifically the individual child not the family. The Norwegian case also stressed feminist gender norms..one claim against the Chatterjees was that the father didn't help in child-rearing.
Relevant answer
Answer
Mam, I kept aside the feminist perspective to give an insight on Mrs Chatterjee Vs Norway case. My opinion was not on feminism at all. I pointed out endlessly prevailing cultural system which includes some norms of child rearing which contravened by Indian culture of rearing child by Indian mother which was indisgestible to the native norms, led to the unacceptable cruel action without facilitating the space to the foreign cultural of rearing to prove the point of efficacy in rearing a infant or a child. This was a subtle example where multicultural society as an imagination seems achieved and delightful but in reality slow and full of conflict due to unconscious comparison. The part of patriachy based system or feminist road block to multicultural society comes next because the native can differentiate but foreigner first get exposed to the forever existed system.

Family and Childrens' Services, the child welfare agency in my town in Ontario, Canada is launching a new effort that aims to get neighbours, friends, and non-state/informal community supports involved in providing support and safety to families and children in crisis, to reduce the need for more intrusive social worker/state intervention.
Do you know of places where this has been tried/is being done? Models/approaches we can look at?
What about recent research/literature on community-based approaches to child protection?
Relevant answer
Answer
Hi Robert, I think if I was approaching this task I would use ecomaps and systems theory to consider the role of wider family, charitable organisations and the community in supporting children and families who are struggling. There may also be some useful information within the literature for family group conferences which involves working with families and other significant friends to support children to remain safely at home. This would involve prep work with the involved people and a meeting to agree a plan moving forward. Then there would be an assigned person to take the lead with this plan who would be able to contact agencies if concerns were raised. Some local authorities in the UK have started to consider the role of those outside of the family group to support but have also had to carefully consider confidentiality for the involved families.

In practice, Social Work acts from different professional perspectives. For example, the legal case perspective must be methodically related to other case perspectives such as anamnesis and diagnosis within the framework of casework, ideally in a concrete way and with appropriate methodological awareness. It would be conceivable, for example, to subject the results of an introductory anamnesis and diagnosis to subsequent legal monitoring.
Are there scientific concepts or legal requirements for this methodological challenge in your country? Or do you tend to leave the meaningful linking of different case perspectives to the professional actors? What seems to make sense to you?

According to Dr. Paul R Enrich in his book population bomb , sex selective abortion can be a effective mechanism for controlling population.
Relevant answer
Answer
 I will explain.
Ms Pyali Chatterjee, please no offense.
This is a very dangerous topic to bring up in my opinion.
Universal Ethical rules does not let gender discrimination, any discrimination of humans.
I am very much sorry to hear about such a project after so many years the person you have mentioned  died, since most of his theories on that book has proven otherwise.
Gender preferation of parents can not be accepted as a reason for selective abortion of certain gendered babies, whether male or female.
Gender selection is  not acceptable for anybody.
I don' t care about any cultural explanations.
This is unethical and unacceptable.
There are countries on the world that could put somebody in jail just for mentioning this.  This is very bad. It is unacceptable as racism.
Even such a question should not be asked to people.
In my opinion, and I believe many would support me, one should not choose to be a parent if she/he discriminates a child because of gender.  If anyone does that, they need professional help in their lives.
It would be a very big mistake if any ethical council favors such a research project, or even if it is a question in a questionnaire type of research.
And if a doctor does gender based induced abortion, this is not ethical and  it is a crime.
Please try to forget about this topic as soon as possible.

Not sure if you are looking at an international perspective but in the UK it's best practice for motivational interviewing by trained health advisors to be offered to those reporting risky sexual health behaviours, and often located within sexual health clinics, so people receive sexual health checks and treatment at the same time. If this area is of interest/relevance I'd recommend looking at BASHH.org and https://www.fsrh.org/home/ to get an idea of UK guidelines and the evidence base these were developed from.

I've made an intercise review about the principal debates on youth in the field of sociology, however I've found just some discussions regarding the importance of the topic for the social sciences, and some reflexions about it. But I still can´t find any current author or school who has a solid theory about it. What are the current theories for childhood and youth studies?
The others variables with which I'd like to study the theme of childood and youth, are the socialization processes, the sub-cultures or values of the youth, the migration and communication, mass media and the social networks.

Relevant answer
Answer
Ayodeji,
I am not sure if this will really be much of an assist, but this is probably the best you will be able to do when dealing with anything child related as it is very challenging to procure hash sets for anything child related unless you are law enforcement or LE sponsored to perform forensics etc.  You may want to consider speaking with someone at your local ICAC or NCMEC.
You can use the NSRL datasets found at the included link for non-child related hash sets for research projects.
You can use Autopsy to perform some of that research.
Good Luck.

I am thinking of ways of identifying infants with prenatal alcohol exposures.  I am actually a social scientist in the field of child welfare, and am concerned with being able to identify children who come into foster care who have been prenatally exposed to alcohol.   We know that the overwhelming majority of these cases are  missed, so they do not receive adequate services for Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders when they are in foster care. If all newborns were tested in this way (like PKU), this might help.  What issues are there with meconium testing?  Comments on both science and wisdom of doing this are welcome.  There is a lot at stake here because these children are currently very poorly served in the child welfare system.
Relevant answer
Answer
I like the idea of testing the meconium from babies whose mother's had known histories of alcohol and drug use. It seems that ethyl glucuronide (EtG) is the best marker for this. I find that meconium is a great source for drug testing, but alcohol metabolizes so fast, so the common way this is found is by an random alcohol test in the Emergency Dept or maternal admission. Here is a title about this:  "Meconium Indicators of Maternal Alcohol Abuse during Pregnancy and Association with Patient Characteristics".

I read this view somewhere, that it is indeed unethical to talk to a child about trauma which they have been exposed to, while they are still at risk - but how else can child protection workers get on with their work?
Relevant answer
Answer
Recalling my childhood and experiences of extreme violence at the hands of my stepmother - the lack of help by those supposedly there to help was keenly felt as an abandonment. Below are my thoughts from my childhood experiences.
If you aren't there to help, why bother talking about it - it is just voyeuristic and tokenism. Or worst case - it could be considered by a child that the inquirer is seeking information for the professional's self-promotion.
What can you do to help - say it up front and act on it, or join the ranks of those colluding in the abuse.
Empathy and listening, followed by no action reinforces an impression of betrayal, voyeurism, collusion etc and will just weaken any trust for a child.
If you cannot do anything immediately, but need the child's testimony to act, then tell the child that, be truthful. Possibly discuss ways a child can self-protect if possible.
Sorry to sound so bleak, and maybe as a kid I was plain suspicious of so called helpers who were all talk and no action, even colluding with the perpetrator to further diminish my sense of safety and self-worth.
Not sure if this helps but children's voices need to be considered even in esoteric discussions ...

I am looking for peer reviewed journal articles reading on art therapy with children that have been abused.
If anyone can help in regards to this, it would fantastic
Relevant answer
Answer
Hello Nichola,
For me, working with children assumes a developmentally appropriate approach.
Working with abused children forces the therapist to consider the state of the child's emotional development specifically.
Abuse in childhood interrupts emotional development. The therapeutic approach should focus on both processing the trauma and re-engaging emotional growth.
The emotional developmental agenda (Erikson) for late childhood includes developing and internalizing a sense of competence.
Creativity can be internalized as competence when it becomes a method of processing emotional content (symbolism). For example:
  • For children, collage does not require much mastery. The child's effort to share why they chose this picture, is process.
  • The completed project tells the story they wish t tell, and is validation of a competence with symbolism.
  • A binder  that illustrates the journey allows us to revisit process when encouraging the next developmental task
I prefer creative approaches with children who have difficulty identifying feelings, but this approach also encourages verbalization.
I have also notice a high percentage of abused children that maintain a creative outlet (drawing poetry...)
It is also effective in a group format with abused adolescents, when encouraging identity development.
Just a thought

I am looking for instruments to use in the assessment of this matter, one of which is the Child Welfare Worker Stress Inventory: I need the manual for this.
Relevant answer
Answer
I don't think the Child Welfare Worker Stress Inventory is a commercially published test. The basic source is an article that appeared in the Journal of Psychological Issues in Organizational Culture earlier this year (Volume 5, Issue 1). I'd start there. If it doesn't contain enough information, write directly to the authors.
Self-differentiation is going to be the more difficult variable to measure. I wouldn't put all my trust in a self-report inventory for this one. Of course you'll want to include some kind of self-report (because they're easy and have known reliability, etc.), but after all, a poorly differentiated personality won't be very good at telling you so! Something like Jane Loevinger's Washington University Sentence Completion Test would be good, but that means a major learning curve as you master the instrument.

I am very impressed with your initiative. You'll need to learn/understand reasons for not attending public schools. What can this system do that the govt. policies can't seem to achieve. You might want to explore the incentive mechanisms set up in other states in India - that seem to draw more children - which is missing in North-west. If this is the kind of information you were looking for - send me a line and I can send more details.
