Hi,
I'm writing a manuscript concerning a systematic review of case reports of a specific lesion.
Is it possible to include records in any form say short communications, letters, and governmental reports or case reports without an available full text or abstract in a systematic review based on their title only? If possible, then wouldn't it contrast with the guidelines suggested by PRISMA? Are there any other guidelines suitable for this purpose?
Due to the rarity of the concerned REPORTS in our study, the inclusion criteria are flexible and any RECORDS would be of value.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
With gratitude,
Nafis

Applied research is simply Objective study or Solution driven study while empirical research is knowledge driven using empirical evidence.. Empirical research provide breakthrough in field of study by providing new knowledge to existing one. Empirical research is simply subjective study
Case study is descriptive type study in which rare or unique finding of a particular case and it's management

I have a question concerning how to classify this research approach. Let me give you the context:
A couple of colleagues and I found that a particular topic was showing itself to be particular tricky to teach in a classroom environment, thus we spent last year collecting literature on the topic and end up developing a theoretical framework for how to address the issue. We now plan to test our framework by implementing it in an undergrad classroom course that one of us is teaching.
Now here is the thing, we come from a social science background, and we intend to initially approach this effort qualitatively (through observation and semi structured interviews with participants). Thus, my initial reaction would be, from a methodological standpoint, to maybe call this a case study (see Yin, Merriam, Stake, etc.). However, considering that the person implementing the framework (and teaching the course) is also one of the researchers who developed it, can this still be called a case study? Or should it be considered something else? I've heard people suggest Action Research, Participatory Research, or event "a participant observer Case Study" but I'm not quite sure if this is quite it as well.
Any help would be appreciated, thank you.
Obs.: we are well aware of potential bias, and depending on the results of this first phase we then might, later on, run this again, this time as a more controlled experiment, comparing the framework version classroom outcomes’, against the ones from a "non-framework" one.
Relevant answer
Answer
Is case study a methodology? Robert Stake (1998) argues: "As a form of research, case study is defined by interest in individual cases, not by the methods of inquiry used". I find it enlightening to regard case study methodology as a meta-methodology; the methodological recommendation is to combine the methodologies which are useful in the light of the issue at stake. A methodology is a recommendation to rely on certain data collection methods, methods to analyze and apply specific quality criteria. Action research procedures and purposes, Grounded Theory methodology, Hypothesis-testing approach (Yin) are examples of methodologies which can be used, alone or in combination, in a case study. In short: (1) Case study methodology is a combined methodology: a meta-methodology, (2) object of the study is a case, (3) triangulation is an overarching quality criterium, (4) a purposeful sampling procedure is used to select the case(s). As a consequence: in research it is more important to make clear how it is done, rather than what it is.
Best wishes

By creating a PowerPoint, Blog, or using a network or designed website, you can create a prototype of a product for testing, analyzing, sharing, and comparing quantitatively ( for how many for similarity) and qualitatively (to improve your product for the best).
Tools to consider:
You can present your model using PowerPoint, Google Slides, or Prezi
For sharing and comparing your product, use a blog, a social network, and a website.

Aim?

Relevant answer
Answer
Aim objective and elements of literature review
AIMS are what you intend to achieve with your research, and OBJECTIVES are the specific goals/deliverable (which are within your AIMS) you intend to achieve.
Just like most academic papers, literature reviews also must contain at least three basic elements: an introduction or background information section; the body of the review containing the discussion of sources; and, finally, a conclusion and/or recommendations section to end the paper.

I was also wondering if someone with a work background in this sector would have the time to answer some questions about how mobile devices afflicted their role.
Thank you in advance,
Rubin
Relevant answer
Answer
I do not have any experience running production with mobile devices but I have an experience with running the production with computers. In 1990s I was an internal auditor in one of the cement production groups in Turkey. In one of the cement plants the kiln (high furnace) was being run manually. It means there were various gauges measuring the heat, pressure, rotating of the kiln. Engineers would go and check the measures if the kiln were running OK. A year after a control cabin was established and all the gauges were connected to the control cabin. The engineers were able to control the kiln from the control cabin on a computer. That was very impressive in 1990s. Today with the help of internet you can control many parts of a factory remotely. Still, you need people on the site. I.e. raw material must be moved from one location to the next, finished goods must be shipped by trucks. Maintenance people should be on premises etc.

Relevant answer
Answer
Quasi-experimental design simply refers to research where it is not possible to do a random assignment of participants to the control versus experimental group, so you already have a quasi-experimental design.
In addition, you have both quantitative and qualitative components, so that you plan to do a statistical assessment of the effect of your intervention as well as a case study of the actual process.
The only potential problem I see in what you sent is with Research Question 3 about students' perceptions of the flipped classroom, which is not inherently qualitative.
In many ways, this strikes me as a QUANT + qual mixed methods research design, where you use quantitative methods to answer your main question about the effects of the flipped classroom experiment, while also using qualitative methods to answer some additional questions about how it worked in practice.

What are the main differences between case study and action research in qualitative research?
I want to learn your opinion on this subject.
Relevant answer
Answer
Action research is a type of research study that is initiated to solve an immediate problem. It may involve a variety of analytical, investigative, and evaluative research methods designed to diagnose and solve problems. It has been defined as “a disciplined process of inquiry conducted by and for those taking the action. The primary reason for engaging in action research is to assist the “actor” in improving and/or refining his or her actions” (Sagor, 2000). But, a case study is basically an in-depth examination of a particular event, situation, or individual. It is a type of research that is designed to explore and understand complex issues; however, it involves detailed contextual analysis of only a limited number of events or situations. It has been defined as “an empirical inquiry that investigates a contemporary phenomenon within its real-life context; when the boundaries between phenomenon and context are not clearly evident; and in which multiple sources of evidence are used.” (Yin, 1984)

Can we do a systematic review of case reports? If yes, how exactly can we do it?
Relevant answer
Answer
As a rule, a systematic review of case reports is carried out when only limited (retrospective) reports are available, e.g. when rare or single cases are involved and prospective studies on these are not feasible, e.g. due to the rarity of the reported events (example: orphan diseases).
The question for systematic reviews of case reports must be clearly defined. The parameters suitable and necessary to answer this question must be considered as selection criteria. It is helpful if standard parameters are also recorded as selection criteria, because this makes it possible to describe the "population" of the selected cases (demographic data, etc.).
The analysis depends on the research question and is usually only descriptive.

You may want to consider specific examples of case-study themes of societal change. For example, traditional learning relied on memory and non-government education into the last half of the 20th-century. Whereas, 21st-century learning is transitioning back to independent and communal learning using digital communication and artificial memory (e.g. cell phones, computers) which influence and change social development.
Specific historic and current examples from several countries are used in my Relating to Ancient series of books. Here are a few quotes to see if my work fits your criteria.
1."...The ability to learn, memorize, think, theorize, conceptualize and calculate are crucial to societal development. Artificial memory is likely hampering all” (Relating to Ancient Learning as it influences the 21st Century, p. 346).
2. “…Interrupted by the ever-incoming emails, media notices, social media pop-ups, text, and cellphone calls, it appears electronic communications designed to make employees more efficient is actually decreasing productivity and especially long-term conceptual thinking” (Learning, pg. 378).
3. "Local, national, and world leisure will decrease innovation as more time will be spent relaxing, not inventing" (Relating to Ancient Culture and the mysterious agent changing it, p. 253).

In your qualitative inductive study, case study is a strategy which determines the structure of your research plan. Within this plan, GT is only your approach to data analysis among others, such as content analysis, thematic analysis, Phenomenology / heuristic analysis, and so on. I would like some help if someone can explain to me that if I can do thematic analysis for multiple cases by using three models complementing each other in conceptual framework.

Relevant answer
Answer
Triangulation can be conducted by using different methodologies. A suggestion is using thematic analysis where the first set is inductive; you conduct data exploration, though it can be informed by a conceptual model. The second model could test the first and look for divergence. If you have a third case study, you might collect the data differently and use a different method, such as quantitative. By doing this, you are using mixed methods.

Hello!
I am writing a systematic review. The results that I have obtained contains many types of study design like RCT, cross-sectional, cohorts, case-control, and case reports.
Can i use different types of quality assessment tools like CASP, Cochrane, JBI, to analyse the different types of studies that I have collected?
Thank you!
Relevant answer
Answer
Yes absolutely, the tools are specific to study types and therefore designed to assess the different types of bias associated with these.
Equally, when synthesising the data, it is important to apply appropriate methods of data synthesis for each type of data, quantitative and qualitative. Ideally, these methods would be pre-specific in a protocol as some methods are capable of producing different results.
Section 1.3.5 Data synthesis in the CRD handbook can help: https://www.york.ac.uk/media/crd/Systematic_Reviews.pdf

A sample of your scholarly writing (10-20 pages in length). This may be a chapter of your master's thesis or a paper written for a graduate course.
As I have a non-thesis master’s degree, I am unsure what I can add as a writing sample.
One of my friends said it is better to add a case study, but I don't know which case study would be appropriate to consider as a writing sample.
Moreover, The deadline is approaching, and I am worried about the time.

Dear Kimia Hashemi conference papers, academic articles, even a piece of research based on your area of expertise written especially for the application process would be adequate. What the administrators are looking for is confirmation that you can write in an academic way (well researched, competently argued and critical in approach) and will be capable of completing the thesis element of the doctoral studies.

Question

Dear fellow researchers,
I am currently looking for an established measure for the different modes of organizational ambidexterity (i.e., structural, sequential, contextual ambidexterity) and wonder whether you might have come across papers that quantitatively measure these.
I know that there are a couple of case studies / qualitative studies that look into the different modes building upon the table summarizing the different characteristics introduced by Birkinshaw and Gibson, 2004), e.g., Foss and Kirkegaard, 2020 differentiating structural and contextual ambidexterity based on observations, interviews and archival data through coding, but so far I found only one study (Zaidi and Othman, 2015) who used a measure to capture the mode in quantitative research.
Any ideas or tips would be much appreciated!
Many thanks in advance,
Sandra
Relevant answer
Answer
Hi Sandra,
If the only issue is to find out what form of ambidexterity the organisation has implemented, I personally don't think there is a need for "an established measure". Why not formulate a simple question?
First, it is essential that you clearly state what you understand by ambidexterity, i.e. exploration and exploitation. Is it incremental and radical innovation, the optimisation of existing business and the search for new business, the satisfaction of existing customers and the acquisition of new customers? There are many definitions of ambidexterity. Only if you are sure that your participants all have the same understanding of it, you will be able to get accurate answers.
Once you have defined what exploitation and exploration mean, you can simply ask how these two activities are separated within the organisation:
  • temporal; periods of exploitation alternate with periods of exploration --> sequential ambidexterity
  • organisational; there are departments that deal with exploitation and others that deal with exploration --> structural ambidexterity
  • not at all; it is the same employees who carry out exploitative and explorative tasks --> contextual ambidexterity
I hope this helps you and wish you all the best with your research,
Andrea

I'm conducting a comparative case study of a community health worker pilot in three sites in England. I want to identify barriers and facilitators to the implementation through interviews with professional stakeholders and focus groups with service users and the community health workers. I'll collate routine quantitative data from the pilot and local sociodemographic data to contextualise the cases.
I've found a survey instrument that measures the appropriateness, acceptability and feasibility of an intervention (Weiner, et al., 2017. Psychometric assessment of three newly developed implementation outcome measures. Implementation Science, 12(1), pp.1-12) and I'm trying to decide whether to use this alongside the stakeholder interviews. I'll seek to qualitatively assess appropriateness, acceptability and feasibility through the interviews, so I'm concerned that would I be duplicating myself for questionable added value. Doing the survey runs the risk of wasting time that could be better spent talking to the interviewees, and increasing my workload on what is already a big project. On the other hand, the data might be useful for triangulation.
More generally, I'm wondering what the value of a survey like this might be in a case study. The data wouldn't be generalisable as the sample isn't probability based and the sample would be very small (in this case, perhaps about 30 people if everyone who consents to interview agrees to complete the survey too). I've read elsewhere that surveys are useful in case studies for triangulation, but I'm not convinced!
Relevant answer
Answer
An excellent survey can assist you in developing a picture of the clients' experience working with you. During the interview, you can ask appropriate questions to assist fill in the specifics. The information you hope to gather through your survey is a mix of qualitative and quantitative data.
The goal of case study survey research is to determine the characteristics of a group by asking a series of questions about a topic to people in that community. The veracity of the information acquired, on the other hand, is dependent on participants' honesty and desire to participate.

What would be the best Web of Science indexed, non-open access journal where we could submit such a case report? Thanks!

Answer
I published many case reports on BMJ case report. I find it the best choice for case reports. In fact, case reports rarely are cited more than 5 or 6 times, hence journals with IF usually reject them. I think that there is no reason to publish case reports in journals with IF, as they are not focused on getting citations and growing the H-index, but on sharing experiences and help collegues in the diagnosis and management. This is my point of view. Thank you for your questions.
I suggest further journals accepting case reports: Neurological sciences, BMC neurology, Practical neurology.

Question

I'm currently writing on a dissertation, c.40 pages, and I'm left with no academic support due to the holidays now.
My topic in international relations is very specific and something about which there exists only scant literature. In fact, most of that literature redefines the phenomenon (very contentious that it does exist), but I want to explain how it actually emerges, the reasons why it happened. The work will be done comparatively with two case studies and process tracing. The phenomenon logically is the dependent variable.
From studying the two cases I have gained a good understanding of the drivers behind the phenomenon, and those drivers explain the emergence of the phenomenon in both cases. So the drivers are the independent variables. What I know so far helps me to bridge the gap between IV and DV; that is, explaining the mechanism that led to the occurrence of the DV.
However, what stuck me know from reading guides on how to write dissertations (or Bachelor/Master thesis) is that they all presuppose a 'theoretical framework', or a 'theory' that drives the research question. Apart from conceptualising how to think and measure the DV, I don't really know what else I should add. There is no literature/theory that would explain the DV. Why can't I just proceed as I planned?
Would appreciate any help!
Relevant answer
Answer
When it comes to provide theoretical support, I slightly take a different view. We need to come up with an explanation that sounds cogent. Available theories are handy in this regard. Yet, their absence must not be discouraging for us as we can provide reasoning on the basis of our own understanding supported by relevant examples.

All the very best of luck with this; I do hope that you get some helpful responses.
I have just seen, from your RG records, that you have never asked a question.
So . . . click on 'Questions' at the top of this page and you will be able to nominate either to ask a technical question or start a discussion. You must decide whichever you feel is the most appropriate.
Maybe, as you want to find out if your documents are one-shot designs, you could ask it as a technical question, and include the links you included above.
You have a word limited space where you ask your question but then there is a place where you can explain what you need to know.

Hi everyone ,can you please help me to discover if the Journal of Clinical Images and Medical Case Reports (ISSN 2766-7820) Impact Factor: 1.2* is a valid journal to submit a paper ?
please let me know your advice
Relevant answer
Answer
The “Journal of Clinical Images and Medical Case Reports” (ISSN 2766-7820) is too new to be mentioned in the Beall’s list but there are multiple red flags:
-Since they are new (only out there for two years) you already know that the too prominently mentioned impact factor is fake
-Indeed, the journal cannot be found in Clarivate’s master journal list (https://mjl.clarivate.com/home )
-Indexing info (https://jcimcr.org/ ) mentions numerous so-called misleading metrics like Cosmos Factor, OAJI, DRJI etc. etc. (see for more info) often used by predatory journals
-Showing DOAJ logo is misleading since they are no member (https://beallslist.net/misleading-metrics/)
-The prominently mentioned PubMed info is misleading since it refers to the fact that NIH granted authors are included in PubMed regardless the journal. In the following link you can see that they are not indexed as journal: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/nlmcatalog/?term=9918266187306676
-Google contact info “848 N. Rainbow Blvd, #5486, Las Vegas, NV 89107, USA” renders more journals (while no publisher behind them is mentioned) and is somewhat suspect
-No transparency about the costs
Personally, I would avoid them.
Best regards.

Group one is fine (15), however, I struggled with the recruitment of the second group (5) and I'm trying to reach out to fellow researchers who may have encountered a similar issue.
My current intention is to take group one data and use reflexive TA to analyze it. Then treat the data from group two as a supporting case study to provide a comparative perspective.
Has anyone followed a similar approach? and if not, what approaches have been used for data in such circumstances?
Relevant answer
Answer
A study can have both quantitative and qualitative research approaches, although one could argue that a qualitative study would best precedes a quantitative survey. .Thus, you could present arguments / a case for interpreting qualitative data using, eg, phenomenography perspectives. In which case, you are describing "ways of interpreting" the concepts that you are exploring. In this paradigm you are not sampling people as such, you are sampling "ways of conceptualising". These outcomes would not claim for external generalisability (your stats), but they could enhance internal validity. And you could argue for reader generalisability.

Dear fellow researchers,
I have a question concerning LCZ modelling for a masterplan. My case study is on a new city the city is still under construction not completed yet. I want to classify it's masterplan to LCZ to evaluate its behavior from an urban climate point of view. Is it possible to create a map of LCZ since the remote sensing is not an option in this case because nothing is completely built. Can you recommend a tool that I could work with
Thank you in advance.
Relevant answer
Answer
Hi Manar, in this case I would go either for a manual sampling (based on visual interpretation and personal knowledge of the master plan) or a GIS-based approach. This will depend on how you intend to use the LCZ maps and for what reason. The GIS-based approach is generally preferred but it requires the availability of a digital topographic database, primarily including buildings and their heights (so that relevant indicators can be calculated, e.g. SVF and H/W ratios of representative street canyons) but also land use (to account for the different ground cover characteristics). For the GIS-based approaches, see, for example, the work of Lelovics et al. (https://doi.org/10.3354/cr01220) and the work of Geletič and Lehnert (https://doi.org/10.1515/mgr-2016-0012), where a full procedure for a applying a GIS mapping of LCZs is explained. Combined approaches, even if they are not directly applicable to your case, might be also a useful source of information for the GIS part. See, for example, the work of Gál et al. (shorturl.at/giDFS) or our recent work (http://dx.doi.org/10.5821/ctv.8663).
Lastly, have a look at these two recent publications, by Lehnert et al. (2021) and Jang et al. (2021) that comprehensively compare different mapping methods of LCZs and their application.

I can understand the importance of having an outcome assessor independent and blinded of intervention for a Randomised Controlled Trial (RCT), but when conducting a Case Study investigating a new Clinical Health intervention is it also important to NOT allow the principal researcher to carry out baseline and post-intervention outcome scales/measures?
My understanding is that the principal objective of a Case Study is to establish the feasibility of a new intervention rather than effectiveness and more importantly ensure that the participant does not experience any adverse effects. Because of this, the significance of any non-feasibility scales are minimal so for this reason would it be a poor design for the principal researcher to undertake the outcome scales/measures?
