A business that doesn't factor in sustainability risks is less successful in several measures, including profitability, growth, and employee retention. By integrating sustainability into your business strategy, you can find success because, rather than in spite, of sustainability.

Topic: Conflict Management Styles in High School Students
Context: I am doing a research about conflict management styles among high school students (for now this is limited to one class of about 20 students).
I have already distributed a survey to identify their individual conflict management styles (by KW Thomas and RH Kilmann).
Then, I proceeded to group them according to the same style and assigned an interactive project for them to work on. As they were grouped according to the same conflict management style, it meant that many of them were not working with their usual group of friends and felt uncomfortable with adjusting to new teammates.
I would like to find an instrument or questionnaire to record their response of how they felt after the project working with people they do not usually work with.
Could anyone provide some academic resources/surveys to measure their opinion and experience working with new teammates?
(P.S. I am a beginner researcher. I have a Business Management background but I would love to delve into different topics that pertain to education as that is the field I am currently employed in. Thank you!)

Hi
I'm looking to analyse some data for my dissertation (Bachelor Business Management). So I found the following Journal Article : Doll, W.J. and Torkzadeh, G., 1998. Developing a multidimensional measure of system-use in an organizational context. Information & Management, 33(4), pp.171-185. There are 3 Main Functions and 5 Components in the system use constructed by Doll. There are 30 questions and all are using a 5 Likert Scale (Strongly Disagree -Strongly Agree)
And I'm looking to find out which one of the 5 components has the biggest perceived impact by managers?
I'm not sure what sort of analysis I should be doing in order to get those results.
Relevant answer
Answer
Likert scale data can be analyzed as interval data, i.e. the mean is the best measure of central tendency. use means and standard deviations to describe the scale.

For some time now, scholars of economics and business management have been trying to channel their concerns into resolving the serious problems that social, economic, and business systems are posing as a result of the uncertainty that is characteristic of our times. Thus, a good number of proposals are emerging which, in different ways, converge to give a new treatment, both to old problems and to new ones.
To both old problems and those emerging from the complex web of economic-financial relations.
Despite this, however, their use in management decision-making has not become widespread.

Its a question that i have also pondered over. Fuzzy logic can finally allow machines and computers to follow same decision making processes like humans, but much more calculated. However, perhaps human beings are not yet ready to 'trust' the process of fuzzy logic. Perhaps also one may feel that the 'human emotion' component may lack in fuzzy logic. Business decisions are sometimes also based on emotions and intuition and not only figures and data. Perhaps as we transition to Industry 6.0, fuzzy logic will become more prominent in decision making.

According to (Rigby & Bilodeau, 2018) five key trends emerged from Bain & Company's 2017 survey, in which respondents felt that today's business leaders must trust and empower employees, not command and control them; and that culture is at least as important as strategy for business success. In addition, supply chain capabilities are increasingly vital to our industry's success. Likewise, digital disruption and software solutions are rapidly changing the rules of competition. Today, there is a wide and varied range of business management tools, of which it is interesting to know the most widely used.

Business management (and operations) has many intertwined aspects, which constantly interact with each other, raising the complexity of it, as a 'system'. Modelling a complex system is difficult due to dependencies and adaptive behaviour. However, such complex 'systems' self-re-organise and become sustainable. A close-related concept of chaos indicates that a change in the initial conditions can bring out randomness, even with deterministic laws. Though the chaos and complexity theories are interrelated and multi-disciplinary in nature, very less application found in business management research.
The onset of Covid-19 pandemic has presented a unique social context for chaos and complexity.
Fellow scholars of this RG are requested to highlight:
a) recent trends in research in this area (how chaos is measured, analysed?).
b) recent applications of chaos and complexity theories in the field of business management
c) modelling techniques, related to chaos and complexity theories
Relevant answer
Answer
This answer focusses only on one aspect of your question, which will help to narrow your search domain: entropy measures. Within complex systems are being developed and increasingly applied complex systems measures based on the notion of entropy.
Entropy measures were originally developed by Ludwig Boltzmann and Shannon in twodisciplines: statistical statistical physics and information theory.
In the last about fourth years, a whole array of complexity measures were developed that measure the observed system, make some distribution of measurable properties that are subsequently inserted into the well know Boltzmann or Shannon entropy measures.
This procedure helps to asses the state of the observed system even without being capable to observe its every single detail. How exactly is this done can be found in our paper on the prediction of Torsades de Pointes arrhythmia, all details of the procedure are explained there.
A very important note. Very probably your measures will be impossible to classify by humans. This leads to the application of AI and machine learning methods, which are described in the same paper.
The notion of entropy had been proven a very valuable way of classifying of the operational mode of systems. Definitely something that you would like to think about in your case.

In daily life single period and multi period inventory system is very necessary things. When the selling period is fixed that is we cant sell things outside that fixed time then it is called may be single period. Lets talk about it what is the actual definition.
Relevant answer
Answer
Single period inventory models are used typically for determining the optimal order quantity for a perishable product. The most famous example is the Newsboy (Newsvendor) problem, in which the demand for newspapers for a given day is random, there is a cost of overstocking (unsold papers) and understocking (lost profits). The objective is to minimize the expected daily cost and the decision variable is the number of papers to buy (for reselling). this model is useful for any other item that cannot be stocked to be sold in another period, you have to sell it during the period or it is wasted. Many products fit this category: Christmas trees, Halloween costumes, or any other item that is special day or event themed. Fresh produce and meat can be though of in this category as well.
On the other hand, multi-period models are used for items that can be stocked for long periods of time, and demand in subsequent periods can be satisfied from the inventory. The basic EOQ model is the simplest of these models.

I often hear from friends negative things about academia, its boring, not connected to reality etc. I have been on and off in academia for 25 years but for the most part I have been in the real world, running businesses and working as a business consultant. I can still feel that in academia there is at least in my field a theoretical knowledge but still people doesn't understand how the real world operates. After university I felt like I knew everything, I knew Kotler backwards and forwards and all the theories..it felt like any way but when I started my first business (during my university years) I felt like I had to relearn everything. This lack of connection to reality was a problem for me and it is something I hear a lot for other business people. "Academics know nothing! ",one friend said and he has a Phd! Perhaps this illustrates the problem?
I guess it is the same in many fields..academia is seen as dry and not connected to the real world. What can be done about this or can anything be done? How do you view your education in relation to your working life? Do you feel your education was relevant? For me...not so much. Later I started to teach and do research but I still have this feeling. How do you feel about academia and the real world? Is academia part of the world we live in or just some "other place"..your thoughts?
Best wishes Henrik

Reality is a holistic concept while academia is one of the partiality of the holistic reality. how can focusing a a small plant give you holistic view of a jungle for that one has to get out of the confinement of a plant and raise above the jungle to have a holistic view of the jungle. Unfortunately division of knowledge into thousands of disciplines have increased ignorance of reality,. I think its time to review the strategy of academia and move toward fusion of knowledge.

Dear friends
I hope you had a nice summer. I sometimes get the comment that academia is not relevant from business colleagues and clients in my consultancy business. For me academia has always been something I have been careful not to associate my self too much with, even if I love to teach. My question is that if there is a way to bridge this gap or conflict between academics and practitioners? I often hear highly negative and degrading comments aimed towards academia from business leaders, some of which have themselves masters or Phd.
I think in the long run this is bad because it reduces the opportunities for academics and makes the transition between one field to another more difficult. I can my self admit to having a bias, meaning I would think twice before employing someone who has been in academia for an extended period of time.I realise this is something I need to work on, prejudice and generalisation is never good!. I think there are a lot of competent people in academia but in many ways academia has become a world of its own with little or no connection to the real world, making it more difficult to move from academia to for example a managerial role or consultancy, what works in theory doesn't always work in practice. Do you have any experiences from the vantage point of an academic? My experience is mainly from the other side, that of a business owner but it would be interesting to also hear the other side. Do you have any experiences? How can this gap between academia and "the world" be bridged or should it?How can we change the view of private businesses that academia is somehow a different world inhabited by some very odd creatures?
Also note that there is no intent of disrespect or hostility on my behalf towards academia or academics. I might have deep rooted issues with the current state of academia but many of my friends are academics. .
I wish you all a wonderful day

Management theory was for long dominated by Causation, (just think about Kotler, in other words Planning, Implementing and follow up.) a different theory that has gained momentum in the last years ( Even if it was first launched in 2001 by Saras D Sarasvathy) is the theory of effectuation that is means driven instead of ends driven. I studied those theories quite extensively but found that when it comes to effectuation there is still no consensus, in other words the theory is not yet mature, something that is in my view a bit odd since the theory is 20 years old just about. Why do you think it has taken such a long time for this theory to mature? my second question. What is the relevance of Kotlers Marketing Management today? Still relevant or? Your thoughts?
Relevant answer
Answer
Both causation (Kotler) and effectuation (Sarasvathy) are very relevant, when it comes to understand marketing management. Advancing research into cognitive biases of managerial marketing process requires a better behavioral understanding of bounded rationality and intuitive reasoning.
In this sense, marketing is much more a (open loop) process than a (closed loop) system, in terms of behavioral interplay between prospective client and offered product in all the bazaars of life.

M M Zaman Tanim Institutional Process Improvement and Implementation
It is now seen that traditional project management from the pre-World War II is on the shelf in modern times. Many practitioners oppose the fact that there is a planning element in the projects and that it is desired to know everything from the beginning. Thousands of projects carried out in real terms have found that the traditional method works with a flawless linearity and straight logic, and that it is well understood. Many governments and companies have been thinking about improving processes and making them faster and more functional for decades. In this respect, it is inevitable for all kinds of companies to engage in a process improvement and total quality practice in order to meet the increasing needs and demands. It is now impossible for firms that act otherwise to respond to market needs and succeed. Today, many companies have personnel to think about business processes and strive to achieve excellence by improving these processes. Agile project management is an inevitable technique for companies for these reasons.

Hello,
I am working on the different use and perception of different terms for describing a procedure / activity to solve a problem from the point of view of different research areas; these terms are 'method', 'tool', 'strategy', 'approach', 'guideline', 'framework', 'methodology', and similar. For this purpose, I plan to compare the above terms, their definition and usage from the point of view of product development research with those of business management research as well as human-computer interaction/ computer sciences. My hypotheses are that they 1) name similar activities differently and 2) in some cases use different definitions for the same terms. The definitions I am looking for are usually published in standard works and textbooks. However, I find it difficult to find these for the two disciplines that are unfamilar to me, business administration and computer science. Can someone help me?

This research work is on Business management practices.
1] The Dependent Variable is classified by me as Dichotomous. It is SUCCESSFUL vs UNSUCCESSFUL companies. This classification is based on various Financial Performance KPIs and I propose an arbitrary cut-off to decide the division between the dichotomy. Strictly this could be a continuous measure but real-world market practice would accept a dichotomous classification.
2] There are 6 Independent Variables. These are Management Behaviours and I have measured these 6 labelled Behaviours on a Likert scale and computed Mean scores.
3] To test for relationships I propose to (a) use descriptive statistics and compare means to make fundamental inferences and (b) Compare means via an Independent Samples T-Test, where any 'Sig(2-tailed) outcome that is <0.05 is considered significant.
Is the above valid? Any other recommended test that may be appropriate? Thanks.

Awais - your question is too broad. Business management isa huge discipline and you are best being more specific. On the issue of 'easiest and most useful' - there is no such thing as 'easy' research for a beginning researcher - and what is most useful is adopting the methodology/method that best suits and fits your research topic and questions - which you don't seem to know yet.

Hi, I have recently gathered all my data and begining to analyse it using a thematic analysis. when looking at my data, i realised that the answers i recieved for different questions were very similar. Could anyone give me advice on the best way to analyse this and create codes?
Relevant answer
Answer
Dear Vincent,
Data Analysis method depends on the kind of open-ended data, research methodology/ design and the research questions. In-depth analysis may not be possible if it is a mixed method study where only survey-questionnaire is used which included open-ended questions. Such tool gathers limited qualitative responses, not rich enough to dig themes/sub-themes. In such cases, narrative data can analysed by codes, frequency of codes, and verbatim that compliment quantitative data. Many a time, research question becomes theme and qualitative responses expressed by participants are coded, organized into categories to fetch meaning out of it.
When you plan to analysis question-by-question data, content analysis can be used where you identify the content of the response, develop codes, count frequency of each code and group codes in category. Following computer assisted programs can be useful:
The Coding Analysis Toolkit (or "CAT"): https://cat.texifter.com/
Quantitative Discourse Analysis Package (Qdap)
Hotjar’s open-ended question analysis template: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet s/d/1l4l4sBbqMRfgQEtah5dNnLptKON6M myF2jZOnEJssT0/copy
If you have a rich data sets, then thematic analysis would be appropriate. Thematic Analysis aims to generate themes, which would occur as consistent patterns in the way that people respond to set of questions. Themes can be derived from research questions or pattern emerged from the data. The six steps prescribed by Braun and Clarke (2006) has proposed six steps to carry out a thematic analysis. The six steps are as follows:
1. Familiarising yourself with your data: This step requires the researcher to be actively engaged in the data. While reading your data make notes and jot down early impressions. A comprehensive understanding of the content of the data provides the foundation for the subsequent analysis.
2. Generating initial codes: Once familiar with the data, then start identifying preliminary codes, which are the features of the data that appear interesting and meaningful. These codes are specific than themes, but provide an indication of the context of the conversation.
3. Search themes: The third step in the process is the start of the interpretive analysis of the collated codes. Relevant data extracts are sorted (combined or split) according to overarching themes. The researcher’s thought process should allude to the relationship between codes, subthemes, and themes.
4. Reviewing themes: A review of identified themes focusses on deciding whether to combine, refine, separate, or discard initial themes in two phases: (1) check themes in relation to coded text, (2) check themes for overall data set. This helps generate thematic map. Important to note that the data within themes should cohere together meaningfully yet they should be clear and distinctive.
5. Defining and naming themes: This step involves ‘refining and defining’ the themes and potential sub-themes within the data. Provide theme names and clear working definitions that capture the essence of each theme in a concise and punchy manner. At this point, a unified story of the data needs to emerge from the themes.
6. Producing the report: Finally, transform analysis into an interpretable piece of writing by using vivid and compelling extract examples that relate to the themes, research question, and literature. The report must go beyond a mere description of the themes and portray an analysis supported with empirical evidence that addresses the research question.
Vincent Pere Hope this address your query.

In the era of information globalization, the technological revolution known as Industry 4.0 and the growing importance of implementation to business models of the principles of sustainable development, modern market management systems for operating business entities are being improved.
The current technological revolution described as Industry 4.0 is motivated by the development of the following technologies of computerized, advanced information processing:
Big Data database technologies, cloud computing, machine learning, Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, Business Intelligence and other advanced data mining technologies.
In the context of the development of contemporary national knowledge-based economies and the development of information services made available via the Internet, the importance of innovative startups is growing, in which new categories of economic goods are created based on the application of innovative technological solutions.
In the second half of the twentieth century, various new conceptual elements developed (Benchmarking, Outsourcing, Reengineering, SMART, Just in Time, Poka Yoke, Kanban, Kaizen, Brain-storming, ...) and new business management systems (Business Continuity Management, Lean Management, Knowledge Management, Time Management, Risk Management, Total Quality Management, Virtual Organization Management ...), thanks to which the production processes, logistics, marketing, personnel management were improved, new participative management styles were developed, etc.
Therefore, please answer the following question:
What modern concepts of business management are adequate for currently developing innovative technology companies?
Please reply
Best wishes
Relevant answer
Answer
Innovations shape the global landscape and modern concepts of business management should consider the disruptive implications of the digital economy. It is evident that digital technologies influence management operations, production, and marketing. Hence, modern concepts of business management should focus on creating value through innovation without relegating the sustainable development framework.

Is the synergy and interdependence between the development of analytics conducted in Business Intelligence applications and the processing of data in the cloud in the Big Data database systems increased?
Currently, the amount of information collected in Big Data database systems is growing very fast.
Many companies that have their own Big Data database systems containing huge amounts of information downloaded from the Internet carry out analyzes of these data, the results of which are used in business management.
Many companies use these resources to manage their business. When processing information in the cloud, ie information collected in Big Data systems, the sentiment analysis uses the results of the analytical work carried out in this way for the strategic management of the company.
In view of the above, I am asking you: Is the synergy and interdependence between the development of analytics conducted in Business Intelligence applications and data processing in the cloud in the Big Data database systems increasing?

I'm studying "digital business management" and looking for a topic for my master thesis in the field of "innovation-marketing" and the effects of it on the success of innovations.
Relevant answer
Answer
If innovation is considered a concept, process, practice, and capability—not an event, activity, or even outcome—it will stand to reason that innovation and marketing are (or should be) inseparable. "Because the purpose of business is to create a customer, the business enterprise has two—and only two—basic functions: marketing and innovation. Marketing and innovation produce results; all the rest are costs. Marketing is the distinguishing, unique function of the business." said Peter Drucker. (And yet, surveys of top management often show the priorities to be: finance, sales, production, management, legal, and people, in that order.)
In the private sector, for one, enormous investments are made in new products (but also services, processes, business models, etc.) but there are numerous failures. So, what determines the success of an innovation? With good sense, this query intuits that innovation marketing might be an important explanatory variable; and so, a research question in that field, however formulated, might relate to what specific contribution(s) marketing can make to innovation success. Since such a research question would (in this instance) be addressed in the course of a master's thesis, and it is not likely that a budget would be available, the researcher could identify a company currently working on an innovation, however defined, and offer to help that company conduct a pre-mortem designed to shine light on marketing.
PS: A premortem is the hypothetical opposite of a postmortem: projecting into the future, it investigates what might have gone wrong to generate plausible reasons for failure and embed corrective action before the fact.

I tend to reach out when I'm fairly clueless about something, this time no exception. Some background first though.
I research in Thailand and Australia, Thailand never being easy. Business managers tend not to be helpful. Why say yes and create risk, so possible loss of face (Thailand is a heavily face-based culture) when you can ignore or say "No"? Sometimes, though, the situation doesn't pan out that way at all. Currently, I have a number of business managers happy to help, saying "Yes". But there's an issue - it's low (green) season. There's a real paucity of clients at cookery schools for me to interview.
I sat reading cookery school reviews. One in particular had 169 reviews on Google. I kept seeing the words fun, funny and laugh. Over and over - suggesting people attend for fun. Equally I saw little comment around gaining cooking skills, very little. So, had I found my answer as to why people attend touristic cooking classes? Do I have to interview people at all? Why not just text-mine the reviews?
In fact, over the last day or two things have picked up, interviews nearly finished. But I'm still fascinated by text-mining, if only to capture a school's reviews for comparison against questionnaire responses.
My two questions are:
1. Do readers find text-mining a viable approach to inferentially discovering consumer motivations in the way I've said?
2. How acceptable do readers feel text-mining to be in academia, as opposed to marketing? I'm not sure I've even seen text-mining used, as referenced in an academic article. An exception is a Russian friend who is a big user, which might suggest that there are national differences on this?

1. I think the answer will be yes. It is a viable approach.
2. Text mining is a popular tool for analysing unstructured texts. I have used it in my research. If you take my words, it is really useful, though it needs manual intervention.

I need to review a study in which the authors have applied an OLS regression to test the influence of variable A on variable B. From a methodological point of view, everything seems to be fine. However, the authors have formulated a research hypothesis (not null hypothesis!) that goes like this: "Variable A has no influence on variable B."
In my research field (business and management science), I have actually never come across a hypothesis that assumes no relationship between two variables. Therefore, my question is whether this is a valid formulation of a research hypothesis for OLS regression?
Relevant answer
Answer
I believe it is not possible unless the nature of research is qualitative. If the research is quantitative, the null hypothesis and the alternative hypothesis (H0 not H1) should be used.

Hello, I am Karen, I am starting my Phd in Business and Management sciences, and I am interested in do research about social entrepreneurship, I started with entrepreneurial ecosystems, but I would like to know If could be a good idea to put the both topics together, if not, I would be more aligned to the Social Entrepreneurship, if someone can help me to find gaps in this area, I would be so grateful, and I want to apply it for Mexico, but I am struggling about to which path follow, so if someone better informed about this topic can help me I would appreciate it.
Relevant answer
Answer
I think it's an oxymoron - the concept of entrepreneurial ecosystems (with profit motivation as the central idea that ignites processes) and social entrepreneurship where the extent of motivation for profiteering for the purpose of growth in the social endeavour becomes self contradictory altogether.
Ideally, you should start off with South American social services sector, do some study of existing institutions that have engaged in these ideas. You might wish to expand your search to include multiple countries and then narrow them down to Mexico.
This is what I advise you do:
1. Define the area of social entrepreneurship you wish to pursue, is it micro financing (hot topic of research), infrastructure growth, education and/or a host of other areas. South America is known to have so many co-operatives that keep popping up due to that region's socialist tendencies. Use these ideas.
2. Once you have a area of focus, you should select most popular case studies in these areas, not just out of Mexico, but other countries too. Consider exploring countries like Bangladesh or India or Africa or Indonesia too - you can study these countries for the kind of schemes they have that sustain NGO-driven entrepreneurial ecosystems and then once you find a type you think you can best discuss in your thesis, find the equivalent (or a lack of an equivalent, you can use your thesis to justify) service.
3. Identify your tools and conduct surveys etc. I always think getting data is so very important.
4. Once your data is in, consider explaining your findings/hypotheses accordingly.
PhD is a good way to explore areas, so don't feel daunted, as long as you have an idea about what you want to write about, you should more or less be able to do so - just don't give in to intimidation, discuss with your colleagues and supervisor. Refer to the university's existing libraries for archived theses with similar ideas.
What helps me most is reading published work and theses written by others, it gives you some idea over the theme and direction to take. But choose something you have a solid exposure of and feel passionately about! It's better to write about something you feel strongly about than something you have no interest or knowledge of!
Good luck, hope this helps!
