1 ton charcoal fixes 3,7 t CO2. The global charcoal production is 54 mio tons, in which 200 mio t CO2 are fixed. 200 times the currently produced charcoal will fix the entire CO2 emitted globally per year!!! CO2 emission about 30 bln t per year: means this will be fixed in 10 bln t charcoal.
The entire annually CO2 can be fixed in a volume 2,7 km * 2,7 km*2,7 km and could be dumped in e.g. open pit mining sites where the coal was exploited (give it back).
Rapid growing biomass may be used. Charcoal production cost may be assumed the in the order of 200$ per ton, results in an annual investment of 2000 bln $ globally. THIS IS THE SAME AS WHAT ARE MILITARY WEAPON EXPENDITURES.
This is possible...in principle!
Please tell me where I am wrong in my rough brainstorming.
Relevant answer
Answer
That varies. The retort-manufacturer SPDC says for a simple drum-retort Vario-L: input 1,9 m3 biomass (wood, grass, roots, corn-residues...) and output 0,9 m3 charcoal. This is volume...
Regarding the mass: 1 t input and about 300-500 kg charcoal.
The loss is C-volatiles, syngas, water....
The amazing idea is: use photosynthesis (for free) and partial oxidation (for free).

How often does one brainstorm an important idea yet someone else takes credit for it?
Relevant answer
Answer
Are we ever the 'owner' of a bright idea? 'It takes a village to raise a child', M. Mead said. Moreover, brainstorming is a questionable technique regarding its effectiveness. The gap between ideas and their implementation remains great. It is better to experiment, make a step, observe, learn, and act again, based on powerful questions. An HBR study showed that the companies that made a difference between ideas and their implentation have a automatic bias towards less return.

Dear community,
I am interested in doing some simulation modelling exercises based on our newly established agrivoltaic systems facility. In this agrivoltaic setup, located at AU Viborg, Denmark, we cultivate winter wheat, grass-clover and blue lupin in a standard rotation.
We are still brainstorming on how we should go about it. However, the idea is to use simulation modelling to circumvent some of the challenges we have in our agrivoltaic system setup (e.g. few treatment replicates, lack of long-term data, etc.). I have some experience with the APSIM framework. I see some people have already used it to model crops in agrivoltaic systems [(1) biomass growth in different agrivoltaic systems in Australia: Al Mamun et al. (2023) "Biomass production of a sub-tropical grass under different photovoltaic installations using different grazing strategies" (2) rice yield and quality in three different agrivoltaic systems (fixed tilted, horizontal and vertical) at different locations: Ahmed et al. (2022) "Agrivoltaics analysis in a techno-economic framework: Understanding why agrivoltaics on rice will always be profitable"].
Several adaptive modules seem to already exist in the 'next generation' APSIM, for instance, used in agroforestry modelling and other complex integrated crop-soil-atmosphere systems.
My primary interest is in modelling spatiotemporal dynamics in microclimate – with a focus on soil moisture, light intensity and quality (i.e. 'shade' and PAR). The aim is to provide a better process-based understanding of some of the factors playing a role in (seasonal and long-term) crop yield and quality in agrivoltaic systems.
Ideally, we would like to use the simulation modelling exercise parallel to the empirical field experiment data, so that we can gather data for model calibration and validation as the project goes along.
Any thoughts on this approach is highly welcomed. Any experience in using APSIM for agrivoltaic systems? Or suggestions as to how I could approach it?
Any useful tips are welcome!
Looking forward to this discussion.

Answer
I think the main issue will be that there is no spatiality of solar irradiance (i.e. it is not possible to change the angle of incoming sunlight throughout the day or year) in addition APSIM does not support temporal resolution below day. There is the option to alter inputs in the weather file and simulate the area of each meter from the panels. However, I am scared that will be too complicated and fragmented to extrapolate meaningful results.
Alternatively, I am starting to look more into the GECROS simulation framework That has previously been used to simulate shading effects in agrivoltaic systems Eleonora Potenza et al. (2022) Agrivoltaic System and Modelling Simulation: A Case Study of Soybean (Glycine max L.) in Italy; Jeremy Harbinson and Xinyou Yin (2022) Modelling the impact of improved photosynthetic properties on crop performance in Europe.
This seems more laborious yet more promising for my purpose.
Thanks for all your comments and suggestions.

What role in the development of scientific cooperation is the application of ethics, culture and respect towards other people, other cultures, other value systems, etc.?
What role does the application of ethics, culture and respect towards other people, other cultures, other value systems, etc. play in the development of scientific cooperation, including the conduct of interdisciplinary research projects, scientific cooperation within the framework of international teams of researchers and scientists, within the framework of ongoing discussions on the discussion forum of this Research Gate portal?
Dear Researchers and Scientists, Friends and Colleagues,
In my opinion, answering the above question, I state that the role of applying the principles of ethics, culture and respect towards other people, other cultures, other value systems, etc. in the development of scientific cooperation, including the conduct of interdisciplinary research projects, scientific cooperation within the framework of international teams of researchers and scientists, within the framework of the ongoing discussions on the discussion forum of this Research Gate portal. Do you agree with me?
In the discussion forum of this Research Gate portal, in order to inspire discussion on various research topics, I have formulated many questions and theses.
I am glad that many of these questions turned out to inspire discussions involving many researchers, scientists, experts in a particular field, people who conduct scientific research on a particular issue, people who publish in their scientific publications the results of their research, people who are interested in a particular issue taken up in the mentioned questions posted on the discussion forum of this Research Gate portal.
I am glad that the questions posed on this discussion forum of the Research Gate portal have proved to be an inspiration for interesting discussions, in which noble researchers and scientists participate. In the course of these discussions, which sometimes take on the character of brainstorming, exchange of ideas, new inspirations for further research topics emerge, new research concepts are formed, proposals for new topics for theses are made, etc. Within the framework of the discussions held, researchers and scientists exchange their experiences of their scientific research, present their research results, inspire scientific cooperation, point out other new insights on certain issues. Thanks to this, there are inspirations for new research directions, for undertaking scientific cooperation in various topics and also for interdisciplinary research teams, etc. This is the key purpose of this discussion forum of the Research Gate portal.
However, I am very saddened when the participating researchers and scientists in the framework of the discussions held, instead of a desire for understanding, understanding, respect towards other people, the participants in the discussions representing other scientific communities, other cultures, other countries instead of respect and culture generate negative emotions, instead of substantive arguments in support of their theses turn to other Persons with invectives and negative expressions, i.e. act contrary to the principles of ethics and the basics of culture, ignoring the principles of ethics of research and science, also ignoring the principles of ethics of this discussion forum. So I very much ask you to follow the rules of culture and respect other people participating in discussions. This is important because aggression generates aggression and respect generates respect. Hopefully, looking to the future, I believe that those fortunately mentioned above situations of negative nature were few and in the future there will be none, and that on the discussion forum of the Research Gate portal, everyone participating in discussions will apply respect to other people, participants in discussions and also regardless of whether other participants in discussions represent other scientific communities, other cultures, other countries and so on.
Faced with the development of various global problems, in trying to solve these problems we should all look for what unites us and not what divides us. This is the key to the development of our scientific cooperation and also to jointly solve various global problems.
Therefore, in the situation of participating in discussions on this Research Gate portal, I therefore very much ask you to apply the principles of ethics, culture and respect for others.
And what is your opinion on this topic?
Please feel free to respond,
I invite everyone to join the discussion,
Thank you very much,
I encourage you to participate in discussions on this discussion forum on various topics,
Thank you,
I extend my warmest greetings to all participants in the discussions on the Research Gate portal,

The high prevalence of genetic red cell disorders raises critical questions about the safety and efficacy of the blood transfusion process. With conditions like sickle cell anemia and thalassemia affecting a significant portion of the population, examining how these disorders influence different stages of blood transfusions is imperative. From donor screening to compatibility testing and post-transfusion outcomes, the challenges posed by these disorders are multifaceted. This discussion aims to explore the complexities surrounding the impact of genetic red cell disorders on blood transfusions in Nigeria and brainstorm potential strategies to address these challenges and ensure safe and effective transfusion practices for all individuals in need.

The research entitled Red blood cell transfusion for hematologic disorders by Chang Liu and Brenda Grossman studied the RBC transfusion practices on specific hematologic disorders. The review focuses on autoimmune hemolytic anemia, thalassemia, myelodysplastic syndrome and hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. The relatively safe hemoglobin thresholds of 7-8 g/dL to serve as a guide for restrictive transfusion of red blood cells. However, with patients suffering from the mentioned disorders this approach is yet to be defined and due to the diverse nature of anemia, there is complexity in the different levels of transfusion dependency. It is concluded that questions still arise regarding these disorders and how we can broaden the blood donor criteria to promote risk free blood transfusions.

Hi all,
I have a MEG data set which is about 5 minutes long for each subject. I want to detect and correct existing artifacts using the ICA approach using the Brainstorm toolbox. When I performed ICA, the first component (the dominant one) has a very small amplitude, (about 1000 times smaller in comparison to other components) and looks like a DC signal. Should I remove this component? It is the first component and I want to be sure about this decision as it may be a signal, not an artifact. In the following, you can see the components. Thanks!
Relevant answer
Answer
You should not eliminate unless you can identify a source for the component. See for example https://www.ee.columbia.edu/~dpwe/papers/HyvO99-icatut.pdf, Section 7.1, page 22 in which the authors discuss an MEG experiment in which the test subject was asked to blink and make horizontal saccades, then to bite teeth for as long as 20 seconds. In one version, a digital wristwatch was placed in the Faraday cage, and it produced an artifact.
Question: Is the signal of low amplitude very regular, even more that the ECG signal of this paper? If so that is strong evidence that it is an artifact.

I am on a state oral health department fellowship, and I am severely frustrated with picking an evaluation project. It has been months of literature research, brainstorming, planning, and talking with stakeholders. The topic I want to do is the Sugar Sweeten Beverage invention guide (similar to tobacco cessation 5A's) at the state level. However, I cannot formulate a question, target audience, and data to back up the evaluation. Has anyone done any state evaluation intervention method? Or any pointers? Thanks.
Relevant answer
Answer
Clare Mendioro it is important to identify the state of the program (e.g., early stages, well-established, etc.) so that you can propose the proper evaluation form (e.g., implementation study, outcomes-based, impact, etc.). Once those have been established, then you can frame your evaluation questions based on what others who have completed that evaluation form have asked. From the evaluation questions will emerge the necessary target audience and data you will need.

Among different tool of investigations such as Fish bone analysis, tree analysis, 5 why , brainstorming which one is more scientific and reliable for identifying root cause of different quality events occurred in pharmaceutical industry ?
Relevant answer
Answer
A full standard (IEC 62740) has been developed for root cause analysis. This document analyses many approaches for this purpose.
The Fault tree has been developed to identify, a priori, the causes leading to a potential top event. Then it is very effective for forecasting reliability analyses. However when the top event has actually occurred, this technique can be used, a posteriori, by retaining only the causes which have been actually observed (and discover the root causes of this ecent). This is the base of the "Cause tree Analysis" used in France to identify the root causes of accident/incidents. In collaboration with the actual observations it is based on a "deductive" (top-down) approach which is rather "scientific"

So, the goal is to collect the best available ideas and/or practical experience out there to develop a best practice design that I intend to then build and study.
I found an online tool at Climate Battery Calculator - eco systems design, inc. (ecosystems-design.com) that I used
For a 100 x 50 ft x 10 ft high greenhouse with a 5 ft tall roof structure it gives us a total vol of roughly 53000 cuft.
Now the next question for me is how often does this air need to be recycled and that may give us an idea of the diameter of the piping and the power of the fans needed.
Next I am curious to know how deep the piping should be and how many linear feet of underground piping will be needed to maintain a temp differential of up to 25 deg F between the inside and the outside of the greenhouse both at the high and low end.
Your point about the need to anticipate practical problems is very valid, I would love to hear from anyone who has experience building one of these.
This should help us make a rough estimate of the possible cost to build the structure int he substrata.
This is a windy post but hopefully we can build on this to get into the details of building the climate battery

Recently, my proposal "Enclave Dolarization: the case of the Triple Frontier of Paraná" was selected to participate in the project "Dollarizations in a global world: Socio-Anthropological Perspectives", promoted by the Latin American Council of Social Sciences (CLACSO) -> https://www.linkedin.com/posts/juan-agullo_dollarization-clacso-latinamerica-activity-6899724464477859840-9_ur
My hypothesis is that there are some "Enclave Dollarizations" that coexist with the most obvious "National Dollarizations" (Panama, Ecuador or, de facto, in Venezuela). These dollarizations usually take place in "exception" territories (such as free trade zones, tourist areas or borders, among others).
I'm working on a Tri-Border Area and I'm confronted with the classic methodological issues: absence of data; different statistical criteria (depending on the countries); lack of officials who speak openly about the question (dollarization, i.e., is related to smuggling; tax evasion, etc...).
I'm receptive to any methodological suggestion related with approaches, strategies and tools.

In his book Black Swan, Taleb (2010) believes that the human mind is subject to many blind spots, illusions and biases and that: “The right strategy for inventors and entrepreneurs is to rely less on detailed plans and to focus as much as possible on creative thinking and recognizing opportunities when they arise. Excessive attention to what we know results in yet another similar weakness: we tend to learn the details instead of adopting general laws.” Resistance to change has long been cited as one of the key reasons why companies do not adapt to change on time. One of the approaches is exercise "How to destroy a company". Employees and stakeholders can be divided into groups to find the most effective ways to destroy a company. Lisa Bodell, founder and CEO of the company “Futurethink”, uses simple techniques to help organizations embrace change and increase their ability to innovate, such as Google, Novartis, and HBO: “The first time the HBO team performed this exercise, it created three tactics that a top competitor could use to destroy HBO. The American mining company regularly conducts this exercise in order to protect itself from both competitive and market forces.” Modern management has always existed for “best practices”. In trainings, managers use role models to encourage and direct change. New researches suggest a method better than the previous one. Scientists from the Kellogg School of Management in the USA conducted a series of experiments, and in one such experiment managers were gathered in small teams to create unusual creative purposes for a cardboard box. Before the brainstorming, half of the group was given the task to share the unpleasant stories from the past six months, and the other half was given the task to share the stories they are proud of. According to the results of the experiment, the teams that shared unpleasant stories generated 26 percent more ideas than the groups that shared proud stories.

I am currently studying educational paradigms and I am interested in Constructivist.
Based on the study of the educational paradigms, I believe that this paradigm has profound enlightenment, guidance and practice not only for educational research but also for my own teaching design. Here are my three reasons:
The constructivist paradigm is derived from hermeneutics (Clegg & Slife, 2009), which attaches importance to understanding each person's life experience and the complex world composed of these experiences from each person's perspective. Its axiology holds that constructivism provides a balanced expression of value. The formation of such axiology and concept has far-reaching guiding significance to teaching design. Taking my Chinese teaching experience as an example, a successful teaching design should meet the cognitive needs of all students to the greatest extent possible. In class, teachers should not only interact with a few enthusiastic and bold students who are willing to share their ideas, but also take care of the differences between different students as much as possible and provide and create a fair, free and open learning situation for them. For example, at the beginning of a project, teachers who want to conduct research or better tap into student involvement and enthusiasm can use the Padlet or Mentimeter to collect ideas or brainstorm ideas. In the process of the project, the use of these interactive platforms can also help teachers understand students' understanding and grasp the situation, and such an open platform also weakens students' psychological concerns, so that the dialogue between students and teachers and students is more equal and calm.
The epistemology of constructivism paradigm is the interactive link between researchers and participants. In view of this, my understanding is as follows: Constructivism believes that students acquire knowledge not through unilateral teaching by teachers, but in a certain context, with the help of others, that is, through the process of meaning construction through interpersonal cooperation. My experience in Chinese teaching, for example, in under the guidance and influence of this paradigm, the main body of the language classroom dominated by teachers in traditional teaching and at the core of the classroom to explain a classical background, meaning and thought, change is the main body of the classroom for students, they are no longer by the object of knowledge, but in the teacher's assistance and guidance, To explore the situation is to look up materials and watch videos to understand the writing background and life story of the poet; to collaborate is to cooperate with a group or peer to complete a certain goal of poetry research; to develop conversation is to carry out classroom discussion and communication between teachers and students, and finally form their own cognitive process of this poem.
The research of constructivism paradigm is usually nonlinear. In the process of research, the purpose and research questions may change as we know more about the environment and participants. The core of education is people-oriented, so no matter education research, teaching reform or the implementation of teaching links can not be separated from the focus on learning objects. My experience in Chinese teaching, for example, in this paradigm, and under the influence of the guidance of the teacher and prepare for the design of a class is no longer confined to their own ideas, but based on students of the class learning, and in the process of classroom teaching and flexible to control the content of the inquiry learning (rather than the scripted lesson plan how to design is how to teach). In a real teaching environment, students are the subjects of the classroom, and their answers and feedback often bring teachers inspiration, surprise and challenge. At this time, if teachers can timely guide students and build scaffolding for them to explore, and help them to carry out personalized exploration activities, learners will get more lasting learning significance.
Currently I am beginning research on different methods and strategies on how to improve students’ reading skills in primary school. If I want to use the research methods of constructivism to carry out this research, do you have any good suggestions or relevant materials or articles to recommend? I look forward to your reply.

Wei Li Student-centered active learning is an excellent application of constructivism. Your research will include an instructional design and a research design. Both need to be based on your research questions. As I understand your intention, your instructional design will be based on constructivism, and then your research design will measure the outcomes of the instructional design (possibly quantitative, qualitative, or both).

My 6th-grade son is doing an independent science project for school. He chose to investigate inexpensive ways to view air currents.
In addition to the experimental work, part of his assignment is to interview up to three people who can provide him with knowledge, and help him brainstorm or improve upon ideas. We have already observed that air disturbances having large heat gradients are easily viewed as shadowgraphs. But we need better sensitivity for small gradients, possibly a Schlieren arrangement. In preparation, I have purchased some inexpensive materials that should prove useful: a small 100mm parabolic mirror with a 150mm focal length, a 12-inch diameter Fresnel magnifying lens with a 1-meter focal length, and a big 1x2 meter sheet of retroreflective fabric. There are a few controversial points how to set university ranking systems.
Many educators working in higher education know and agree that the student tuition amount is not directly proportional to the end quality of a program. It is also applicable for many high ranking top universities.
In this case, probably it is a good idea to start with a non-profit international accreditation system (association) represented by university professors/educators/policy makers from different countries. They should work on quality assessment and grading of university programs in specific domains.

Hello Mary,
In general, using publicly available data is exempt from requiring IRB oversight. However, some IRBs, as Daniel Wright 's response correctly notes, may wish to rule on whether a study is exempt from IRB oversight. Others may be content to let the researcher assume the risk if the project adheres to excepted categories that they (the local IRB) have published or adopted.
Once you get some ideas, it wouldn't hurt to contact your university IRB officer to confirm that your proposed research endeavors would, in fact, be exempt.
Good luck with your work.

Muthana Makki Mohammedali I was talking about myself when I was an inexperienced grad student 45 years ago. Skimming abstracts for ideas or potential problems to investigate is fishing and the ideas or problems that come to mind may be only loosely associated with the ideas or problems encountered in the abstracts. Students need to be able to look at an abstract and ask themselves "Yeah, but what about X?" where X may be a further development, a side issue, an undesirable implication, or a merely similar issue, to get started. I suppose a webinar that showed by example how this might be done could teach them how to fish, but I think a one-on-one approach with respect to a student's particular background and interests is likely to be more successful

Hi Guys!
I came across a master thesis which presents a scenario about the future of nursery in a particular sanitary region. In the methodological section the author states that he provided the experts gathered in the brainstorming exercise with the driving forces and the respective uncertainties so that they can pick the critical ones, in order to build the scenario. Is that a good procedure? Actually this is the first time I came across with this. I think brainstorming meant o provide the driving forces. Am I wright?
Relevant answer
Answer
The objective of brain storming is to check whether the initiators of the session have missed any blind spots. So if you give the driving forces up front it could have two outcomes - stereo type answers which the team already knew, or something new which the team had missed earlier.
This is where the moderator's expertise comes into play - to constantly track the progress and if the session is heading in a direction which we already knew, the Moderator needs to play the devil's advocate to divert the discussions into unknown terrains.
But personally I would not give the driving forces earlier. Let the participants come up with a list of driving forces and the scenarios for different combination of these forces. That way the ideas generated will be large in numbers.

I ran a series of workshops in which experts were divided into small groups and asked to discuss various points. After the discussion, they returned to the larger group and reported their views back. As they were summarising their points and as the general discussion was unfolding, my colleague (another researcher) took notes (we did not audio or video record these events). We have gathered a lot of very interesting data which has never been documented before and which came out of very rich brainstorming sessions among experts from many disciplines. However, these written notes are formed of (often) incomplete statements and bullet points which may have, of course, been filtered by my colleague taking the notes.
My 2 questions for you:
1. Is it acceptable to run a thematic analysis of these notes, although having summaries of ideas instead of complete statements does make it difficult for me to accurately contextualise them?
2. Might this analysis be publishable as a peer-reviewed article?
Many thanks indeed!
Relevant answer
Answer
I don't see why you couldn't. You could take each statement/bullet point and have them sorted into categories/themes to see if they make sense. You can do this manually or use software. It might have been better to have a transcript of the group discussions, but you still might get good information from what you have.

Answer
Good morning José Pablo. The question you ask has a deep philosophical content, I discuss it with my students when I deal with the issue of mode of production, the first thing to do is change the living conditions of marginalized sectors because poverty is the cause and consequence of the ecological crisis where climate change is one of its most visible signs. If we do not change the current forms of production, the participation of all the members of the communities in that process and their forms of distribution can make many proposals, but the situation will continue, you will not be able to change the vulnerability of these groups. It is a cause-effect relationship of essence and phenomenon. You are a philosopher, we both know that until the causes of a phenomenon do not disappear, they will continue to maintain their forms of manifestation, until the forms of social exclusion in which these sectors live will continue to maintain the forms of vulnerability of these groups. I am not talking about social revolution, at all, I am talking about the change in the current conditions of existence of these communities, I am not talking about revolution, to make it easier I speak of evolution, although that is not the solution. I can also give ideas on how to solve this problem, but that would be patches and not the solution to the problem.

Hello,
I know this is a simple/mundane ELISA question but appreciate any feedback I could receive. I am a lab tech and have worked other places before, but about half a year ago I started at a diagnostics lab where we run ELISA's daily.
The ELISA is a sandwich ELISA, its not from a kit and we coat our own plates but its a pretty standard test (VWF antigen) and they have used the same tried and true protocols a long time. (Well tested antibodies concentrations, incubation periods, etc. Covers on the plates to reduce evaporation, water bath to reduce edge effect). The long term lab techs have no issues with running the ELISAs.
I, on the other hand, have been having issues.
About half the time my plates look lovely and the control values are fine, the other half the time my control values are too low. (They average the control lot values and they require all controls of that lot to fall within a range of 2 standard deviations from the average, so too low would be falling outside the 2 SD range).
There have been multiple times where I have done the same samples that others in the lab have run and my values always match but my control is low so I am fairly certain it is just an issue affecting the controls.
My CV's are always fine (excluding a random one here and there but they are rare). I plate the diluted samples, standard, and control I have prepared onto multiple plates at once and one plate will end up being low while the other (from the same set of sample dilutions) is absolutely fine so I don't believe it is an error in preparation/dilution of the control or the standard.
Additionally, the curves always look fine as far as I or the higher techs can recognize*, and there is not a high background level.
I have looked at troubleshooting from sites such as bio-rand and thermofisher and they address high controls but not much on low... except to say that the antibody calculation is off which I find hard to believe as, being a diagnostic lab, they use these calculations daily without issues.
I am not the only "new" tech to have had this issue but the higher up techs have walked me through the steps again recently to see if they could figure it out and stated they don't visually see anything I am doing wrong...but they also have stated they aren't very good at troubleshooting the ELISA. This means to me that, while I know how to pipet I cannot rule out if it is technique related (when they eyeball a meniscus are they a little high or do they wash differently or something?) or not (perhaps it is something that is just very sensitive but because I do the majority of the ELISA's I feel the brunt?) as I don't get much feedback.
It is getting very frustrating for me when one plate is fine and the next is not and I am unable to figure out where the difference may be.
If anyone has feedback or even brainstorming ideas as to what may cause my controls to be low it would be greatly appreciated
Thanks!

Hello, thank you for the response. I always prepare a fresh control for each plate but I cannot add a negative control. I would like to but we have set controls which we must use because we are a diagnostic lab.

Another proposal for a research topic in this field:
How can the use of social media portals change people's social behavior, what new opportunities and what new risks it generates?
Social media can affect the personal lives of individual people. The sociological behavior of people is changing. Some people exchange traditional contacts with other people for contacts via social media portals. It changes the sociology of people's behavior, it affects sociological behavior, it generates new types of problems that also affect behavioral economics and the behavior of entire communities. In addition, there is the issue of the risk of losing personal data that may be stolen from social media portals. This risk also shapes the potential discomfort of using social media portals, if it turns out that some part of personal data has been mistakenly made public or stolen by cybercriminals. Unfortunately, despite the assurances of companies that run social media portals, information on these websites is not always fully secured and can be stolen by cybercriminals. In addition, the issue of downloading data from social media portals by large companies to Big Data database systems should be added in order to process them for marketing purposes. The issue of privacy in social media is very important and is related to the security of personal information. Privacy is at risk in terms of information posted on social media portals.

Morning all,
My first post on Research Gate! Hopefully it helps my endeavor :] and warning, it is long!
As the title said, I am brainstorming topics for my thesis. I am enrolled as MS, but will pursue PhD afterwards.
I am extremely interested in WECs. I have worked on a solar-based project before, and, until enrolling at OSU, had never heard of water based renewable energies! I'm so enthralled by them that I am taking a graduate CE course to better understand water wave mechanics.
The problem is, while I am an EE, I am not 500% interested in, for example:
- PE: for WECs, this might be designing a circuit with a super capacitor to help smooth the power output
- Control strategies through simulation: e.g. MPC in Simulink/WECsim
I have feared that maybe I chose wrong, and a ME/CE would suit me better, but all my advisors have told me that, "EEs wear multiple hats, we will surely find something for you"
Now to find what that something is!
I said "not 500%" because, I DO think those topics are interesting. I ask my friends hours on end what their PE circuit is, and to explain their method, and even go home and research to gain a fundamental understanding; I read a 50pg MPC document and covered each page top to bottom in notes you can't even tell where the original text is; I've attended WECSim courses to see how they are implementing control strategies
BUT it is not what I would want my thesis topic to be (I don't think, who knows maybe I start and I like it!)
I have talked to my advisor a lot, but am now reaching out to the power of the internet for various opinions...
So, does anyone have any ideas on what could be researched?
The only topic I found interesting when him and I were discussing were some WECs self adjusting to their environment.
Also, I know that most WECs are designed to work best at a certain frequency, but is there research out there regarding a WEC that could work at multiple frequencies, or change its' internal circuitry (control strategy) to better work at the average changing frequency of incoming waves?
Anything is really helpful. I am and will continue thoroughly researching and talking to many folks in the field to find something I am really passionate about, because in the end, that will make for a larger impact on the world.
Thanks,
- Chris

I am currently looking research ideas focusing on where I could go as a master’s student. It seems as there is a lot of recent towards reinforcement learning in Deep Learning to Learn, and algorithms which explore this such as SNAIL, MAML, etc. I’m currently brainstorming ideas that I could potentially explore in this area as further research or study, but something practical enough to tackle in the course of a year. Some ideas I had were studying various algorithms which explore robots learning to learn an environment that is constantly changing in real time (this could cover domain randomization, simulation training, etc.). Or perhaps there are deep learning to learn techniques that I can explore through Content Based Image annotation and clustering algorithms such as affinity propagation. Or perhaps there might be something I am not exploring and should when it comes to deep learning, image learning, environment learning, etc.

Dear Christopher Klecker
Perhaps the main thing to keep in mind is that "learning" is not all one thing; it differs with qualitative stages of cognition, unfolding sequentially and hierarchically during ontogeny (mostly, to say the least, during child development).
It continues to mystify me that people use the word "learning" as is a ubiquitous KIND OF THING. The only thing that is ubiquitous is associative learning (a more or less constant ASPECT of learning BUT ONLY AN ASPECT): And, THAT changes in its contents and dimensions as OTHER guiding aspects of species-typical learning are going on and changing. Lacking awareness of this is lacking awareness of even the nature of development and of learning itself. It is important to know that this is where psychology "is" (actually, not even a science yet). [ Psychology has several more ways of being empirical and being more empirical (related to clear, testable hypotheses and related to what I have just said), that they have not even tried. They seem to prefer nonsense concepts to (e.g. embodiment) to discovery and to good empiricism SO THAT THEY SEE ALL AS "learning" -- but, again, in a real sense they don't even know what learning is; so biased are they in the position that "all is learning" --> AS THEY "UNDERSTAND" IT <-- (this is a false assumption, aka presumption, which is NOT BIOLOGICALLY LIKELY nor likely to end the irrational totally ill-framed and useless dualist nature/nurture arguments. The science of Psychology has yet to begin. ] See my stuff:

Dear Applied Linguists,
This is an observation, much limited to my Pakistani context, that linguistics is comparatively a very new field. However, it is gaining momentum and ground in Pakistan through various university programs and a lot of research is being undertaken on various issues related to language(s).
But here comes the problem, the research that we produce is limited to only our linguistic departments, the discourse too is limited to conferences, symposiums, workshops, seminars and private discussions and classroom discussions. We do not connect with the public and masses who are the actual beneficiaries of this research. There is a gulf of distance between us and them. Have we identified the means through which we can reach them? Can we really do that? How to get to them? This question is for all practitioners and researchers to brainstorm ideas about this problem at the hand.
Relevant answer
Answer
The debate over translingualism and code meshing is one alternative to what you suggest. If you take the role of what one may call Pakistani-English not as a dialect of standard English but as a language in itself, then you can see the role that applied linguists are playing in terms of exploring the relationship between language and power or social context. In this way, language is connected to grammar and communication, but the problem is how do you incorporate that in the classroom. That's why in some journals, applied linguists are required to discuss the teaching implications of their research, even though their insights may or may not be of value to ELT.

Although the expected long-term effect of weeding was that trees have increased growth rate, I found three times more trees above 50 DBH in the non-weeded compared to the weeded. Since it is the same forest, the species composition is very similar, so the difference is not due to some species that tend to grow bigger. Any suggestions would be great for further brainstorming! + The area is in a tropical island (Mauritius), where the main weed, which has been removed is Psidium cattleianum.

I think you are conducting a cutting-edge research by applying a bottom-up approach and involving stakeholders. I am amazed by the website, congratulations! The videos are great!
We are up to doing something similar to analyze rural supply chain resilience. At first, we created a LinkedIn Group, but we are not sure what would work the best for the stakeholders.
I think you could apply value chain methods since the water is a significant input to the economy and human well-being.
Uncertainty, I think the uncertainty in climate models have a small role compared to the uncertainty of the catchments economic development (it defines the need, the pollution, the issues from flood or drought, etc.) I feel a disconnect between global and regional, local water management issues. I wish I could learn more about the impacts, especially to New Zealand.
I will definitely spread the website information and your forum availability when you share it in my >5000 LinkedIn group.

Do trees have an immune system? Is it crazy to consider immunizing trees against a fungal disease? I was brainstorming with a plant pathologist and we are trying to induce protection in trees.
If we had the genome and transcriptome of the fungal pathogen, could a vaccine be useful to "vaccinate" a tree of interest. We are talking about trees with high value, not forest plantation trees.
Relevant answer
Answer
Apparently, the concept of "vaccination" for trees has already been applied to, at least, dutch elm disease (see the link below). This is not "vaccination" stricto sensu, as pointed by Prerana, but recent findings about epigenetics and trained immunity in humans and CRISPR in bacteria indicate that pathogen recollection does not necessarily needs an adaptive immune system. So why not.

Hi all,
I am looking to analyze some data coming from brainstorming sessions with community partners. The data is bullet form ideas on an institutional vision. Does anyone have any specific tips for how to analyze this? I'm thinking I can follow a qualitative procedure - but does anyone have anything that worked particularly well for them?

Hello Iloradanon Efimoff,
You could start building a mind map, based on the concentric ideas from  the brainstorm. It could be a first step to help organize thinking tendencies. I have applied it in class and I think IDEO has some publications about it too.

Hi,
I am developping an economic growth model following Robert Barro's Model in his "Economic Growth" textbook and orientated on his growth determinants.
The majority of them fits into my model pretty well, but I was wondering, what could otherwise influence GDP growth. At the moment, I have variables including consumption, government expenditure, political variables, investment, inflation, capital stock, population, and trade.
It's just a brainstorming question, that I do not forget "important" variables, that would reduce the OVB, improve the fit of the model, and change the interpretation of my variables.
Thank you so far!

Answer
@Brian: Well, the ideal model would be close to 1 for the R-squared. Or it would be theoretically, but normally regressions have a R-Squared closer to 0 than to 1. My model luckily has a higher R-Squared than the model I refer to in the beginning.
@Mate: I will give an update to my project very soon, where I will further explain the aim of the project and its regression model. But the data is mainly from the World Bank because it's preferable to regress data from the World Bank on GDP data from the World Bank. Something that the model I was inspired did not do. And yes, the accounting identity is similar, but only in a way to be accountable for the fundamental drivers of growth.
Again, thank you for all of your comments and I will post an update on the project very soon.

To answer the question about a brainstorming meeting, I have to tell you that phn (post herpetic neuralgia) has nailed me down, but the brain is still pretty active but can't be integrated in a well defined project adhering to schedule and objectives, preferring to picking up a corn here and one there. At the age of 86 that's what's left.

Some academics as well as authors shows TRIZ as the best ideation tool for engineering tasks.  But, as I saw by a survey, most of design engineers applies mostly Brainstorming. What do you think?
Relevant answer
Answer
Methodologically, it is also important to consider task dependence and (human) knowledge dependence. This makes a combined application of the two more effective.
