What are the support system needed for educating the deaf and blind?
Relevant answer
Answer
Great discussion on how educational leaders can advocate for and implement meaningful support for deaf and blind students. Your emphasis on professional development, inclusive curricula, assistive technology, and family engagement reflects a comprehensive approach to educational equity.
I was especially drawn to your point on collaboration with specialists—this deeply resonates with my reflection on the value of interdisciplinary collaboration, particularly between educators and audiologists. In my recent discussion, I explored how such partnerships are beneficial and necessary when designing inclusive educational policies and early intervention services for children with hearing-related challenges. When audiologists and educators work together, they can create more informed, responsive environments that support communicative and academic development from a young age.
Your inclusion of Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and multisensory strategies further underscores the importance of tailored, student-centered instruction. I believe continued research and policy work in this area will be key to strengthening inclusive education systems, especially around integrating interdisciplinary teams.
Again, thank you...All the best,

Dear researchers,
I am excited to announce the launch of my second independent research project, Existential Threats of Nihilism. This interdisciplinary collaboration aims to explore nihilism from various perspectives, highlighting its multidimensional nature, existential threats, and ways to turn ontological challenges into optimistic opportunities. This project will run for approximately four to five months, depending on the number of participants and other factors. Meanwhile, my first project, The Essence of Knowledge Initiative, is still ongoing. This project will include 3 or more participants, including myself.
Project Outline
The goal of this project is to coauthor research articles on existential threats of nihilism based on participants’ disciplinary perspectives. Topics may include the meaning of human existence, philosophical dilemmas, and responses to nihilism. Each article will have three coauthors—myself and two other researchers. If more participants join, additional three-person coauthored articles will be formed. While each article will have a dedicated team of three, all participants will engage in weekly activities, such as research-based analysis and academic discussions. Insights from these activities may also lead to new research papers and presentations. Coauthored articles will be published on ResearchGate, and if possible, in an open access peer-reviewed journal. The program will be held asynchronously, allowing flexibility in terms of different schedules and time zones.
Participation Criteria
Doctoral researchers, PhD holders, professors, and a limited number of Master's holders regardless of disciplinary background, are welcome to participate.

Life is characterized by its versatility: it includes both challenges and opportunities, defeats and victories. These characteristics, particularly challenges, become even bigger and sometimes insurmountable when faced by people who are blind. In your opinion, what are the biggest challenges that blind individuals encounter?
Relevant answer
Answer
Thank you for your response. Mobility and navigation are indeed among the greatest challenges faced by blind individuals. Although some smart devices have been created to enhance their independent mobility, the situation has not changed considerably yet. Employment issues play a crucial role in limiting their sense of inclusion, financial security, and socialization. Regarding access to information, however, the situation is far better. Nowadays, blind individuals use assistive technologies, such as NVDA (Non-Visual Desktop Access), to use computers and the internet independently. With the help of these screen-reading software programs, they can study or teach online, read and write longer texts, books, and articles, conduct research, use social media, and download videos and music—all without any assistance. Social exclusion, which can arise from various factors, is sometimes the result of societal stereotypes, limited notions about blind individuals, their real challenges, and the resources available to overcome them. Although some blind individuals require the assistance of a caregiver, not all of them have one.
These challenges, while significant, can be overcome or reduced in effect through better inclusion policies, support systems, and increased social attention.

Think about willful academic blindness(ACADEMIC TUNNELING) vrs willful democratic blindness(POLITICAL TUNNELING)....
The first type/academic tunneling seems now normal, taking place at universities, thinktanks, international organizations, governments....which will lead to the death of science in a way that THOMAS KUHN was not expecting, BUT IT IS NOT BEING SEEN AS A THREAT TO THE SURVIVAL OF SCIENCE as it seems we are now in a non-science based world as science or not, they still will push what they want to push.....
The second type/political tunneling is SEEN as an existential threat to liberal democracy as political tunneling does not work under democratic rules just see the political dynamics under political tunneling processes under exism movements like Trumpism....
Hence, willful political tunneling with the support of alternative facts is seen as a serious threat to democracy from within, but willful academic tunneling with the support of alternative academic facts is not seen apparently as a serious threat to science from within, which makes you wonder, why.
And this raises the question, Why willful blindness is taken as a serious threat to the survival of democracy, but not the survival of science?
What do you think?

This is an academic question, not a political one.

Technological advancements are one of the defining characteristics of the 21st century. Today's world is highly integrated through information communication, digitalization, and the blending of the real world with virtual reality. However, certain groups, particularly blind individuals, face significant challenges in accessing the internet and modern devices. Fortunately, the development of screen-reading software, such as NVDA (Non-Visual Desktop Access) and JAWS, has made virtual spaces accessible to many people. Still, for various reasons, such as cost, lack of awareness, self-confidence, and training in digital proficiency, these screen readers are not available to everyone. In your opinion, what can be done to make online environments more accessible to blind individuals?
Relevant answer
Answer
Drazen Pehar, since this discussion is based on web accessibility, I focused on internet-related environments, including academia. Writing about the sense of loneliness, Borges refers to the emotional and social isolation of the blind. To some extent, it comes from the lack of equal opportunities, challenges in environmental accessibility, societal stereotypes, which sometimes lead to negative discrimination, significant misconceptions, and a failure to understand. Mutual help is important when needed, but independence is a fundamental value and opportunity for me. It's a source of self-sufficiency, psychological empowerment, and autonomy over one's life. I do value the role of in-person academic settings. Nevertheless, this century is quite digitalized, and internet-based academia has its undeniable benefits, such as overcoming geographical limitations, accessing high-quality research conferences and collaborations, and participating in international academic communities, like this platform.

I want to do protein protein flexible blind docking ..Please let me know how to do it?
Relevant answer
Answer
  • Prepare the proteins: Obtain 3D structures of both proteins (receptor and ligand) Clean the structures by removing water molecules, heteroatoms, and resolving any structural issues Add hydrogen atoms and assign proper charges
  • Define the search space: Since this is blind docking, you'll need to consider the entire surface of the receptor protein Create a grid box that encompasses the entire receptor or a large portion of it
  • Set up flexibility parameters: Identify flexible residues in both the receptor and ligand proteins This typically includes side chains of surface residues and loop regions
  • Choose a docking software: Popular options include AutoDock Vina, HADDOCK, or Rosetta Each has its strengths for protein-protein docking and handling flexibility
  • Perform the docking: Run multiple docking simulations to ensure adequate sampling of possible conformations This process can be computationally intensive and may require a high-performance computing cluster
  • Analyze results: Examine the generated poses and their associated scores Look for clusters of similar poses, which may indicate likely binding sites Evaluate the biological relevance of the predicted interactions
  • Refine and validate: Perform more focused docking on promising poses Use molecular dynamics simulations to further refine the structures Compare results with experimental data if available

I did two different protein-protein dockings for my bioinformatics project. First, I used the ClusPro blind docking method and then I tried the HADDOCK server where I needed to input a set of active residues for my input protein.
So, to perform the protein-protein docking with HADDOCK, I used the information from the docking results output by ClusPro and identified the residues that interacted between the docked complex using the Prodigy server. Using the interacting residues between the docked complex from ClusPro, I obtained a negative HADDOCK score and Z-score. However, I feel that the docking results from HADDOCK can be considered as false positive as I used the interacting residues from the CluPro docking results.
So, to avoid this I decided to search the active residues related to my designed vaccine construct based on previous literature reviews, but only managed to identify a few active residues to be input for the docking (9 out of 558 residues). As for the results of the docking, I got a positive HADDOCK score with a negative Z-score. I also checked the binding affinity using Prodigy and got a negative score. I was wondering if the positive HADDOCK score was affected due to the limited information given for the active residues during the docking.
If so, are there any suggestions on how should I improve my docking to get negative HADDOCK scores? Thank you in advance.

Good morning, José Alfonso López Nicolás. How are you? I hope so.
In fact, blind evaluation on both sides, which is one in which neither the reviewers know the authors nor the authors know the reviewers, is more impartial, more fair, more ethical. This is because several conflicts of interest bring biases to the conduct of scientific research, reducing the quality and reliability of its results and conclusions.
Financial conflicts of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Possession of shares related to the object.
- Paid employment or consultancy related to the object.
- Be a paid leader of the object studied.
- Patent applications (pending or current), including individual applications or those belonging to the institution with which the authors are affiliated and from which the authors may benefit.
- Receiving research grants (from any source, restricted or unrestricted).
- Receiving travel grants and/or honoraria to speak about the object or participate in events.
- Receiving gifts.
Other conflicts of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Be a religious adherent of the object.
- Be a supporter of a religion that takes a public stance regarding the object.
- Acting as an expert witness related to the object.
- Participation in an advisory board related to the object.
- Relationships (paid or not) with organizations, associations, societies, political parties, NGOs or institutions that have any relationship with the object.
- Personal relationships (e.g., friend, spouse, family member, supporter, former supporter, opponent) with individuals mentioned in the article, or with people involved in the submission or evaluation of an article, such as authors, referees, reviewers, editors or members of the editorial board.
- Personal convictions (political, religious, ideological or other) related to the object that may interfere with the impartial publication process.
The editorial board of serious scientific journals, generally with a higher Impact Factor, H Index and Qualis CAPES, take into account all conflicts of interest during the evaluation process, ensuring that any relevant information is declared in the published article. Scientific journals of this level do not use reviewers who have conflicts of interest with the authors or subject of the submitted article.

John, the environmental problem is a global problem regardless of local roles/contributions like China or Canada or the USA or the EU.
Had at least the western world gone green in 2012 and set up green markets and China and India and Russia and other countries were out of green markets, then perfect green market theory suggest that you can put a cost on importing non-green goods and services so green markets could have been used to push China to go green markets or lose the western markets. Had the EU together with the rest of the western world gone green markets, the energy impact of the war in Ukriene on EU countries would have been small as they would have gone out of non-renewable to produce at the lowest green market price possible and hence they would not have provided money to Russia for buying non-renewable energy to amass a stronger military....
Just a Covid brough countries to their knees because it affected the survival of the supply side of the market/THE RICH without the possibility of decoupling from the health threat, then when the environmental crisis becomes binding and threaten the survival of the supply side of the market/THE RICH without a decoupling possibility from the binding environmental threat, then they move towards green markets as a way to save the survival of capitalism as green capitalism as countries again will be on their knees.
Thanks again for taking the time to comment. It is nice to see that I am not the only once who sees and talks about these a kind of antisciency acts, academic tunneling and willful academic blindness.

Is it widely accepted in the academic community to share a preprint of your paper immediately after submitting it to a journal? My concern is that if author names are disclosed in the preprint, it might compromise the integrity of the peer review process. When reviewers are aware of the authors' identities due to the preprint, it becomes challenging to conduct a blind review. As the double-blind review implies that both the reviewers and authors remain anonymous to each other during the review process.

Thanks for commenting! I think a key problem is that men tend to lead sex research. Heterosexual men are hardly coming to the topic of female sexuality with a clear head and an unbiased viewpoint. Even asking simple questions like "Do you orgasm?" puts pressure on women and implies that the circumstances and the stimulation involved can cause women to orgasm. Women often rely on men for their sexual knowledge and men tell them when and how they are supposed to orgasm. In effect men define 'normal' female sexual function. This is an indication of the fact that few women have any interest in their own sexuality and are more intent on pleasing men or conforming with the more dominant male view.

Blind separation technology has attracted some scientists' attention in recent years, what is the technical bottleneck of blind separation technology? In what scenarios does it have good application prospects?
Relevant answer
Answer
Blind source separation (BSS) is a technique for separating a mixture of signals into its individual components. There are several technical bottlenecks associated with BSS, including:
  1. Non-uniqueness of the solution: BSS methods often rely on assumptions about the underlying statistical properties of the signals, and multiple solutions may exist that meet these assumptions. This non-uniqueness of the solution can make it difficult to determine the correct solution.
  2. Modeling errors: BSS methods typically involve modeling the mixture signals and the source signals. If the models are incorrect, the separation performance will be degraded.
  3. Lack of prior knowledge: In many cases, there may be limited prior knowledge available about the source signals, making it difficult to design effective BSS methods.
Despite these technical challenges, BSS has good application prospects in a variety of scenarios where the separation of signals is required, including:
  1. Audio signal processing: BSS can be used to separate audio signals, such as speech and music, from mixed recordings.
  2. Image processing: BSS can be used to separate images that have been mixed or corrupted, such as deblurring or denoising of images.
  3. Biological signal processing: BSS can be used to separate biological signals, such as electroencephalography (EEG) or magnetoencephalography (MEG) signals, into their individual components.
  4. Wireless communication: BSS can be used to separate multiple signals that are transmitted simultaneously over a shared channel in wireless communication systems.
BSS has the potential to be a valuable tool in many different application areas, and ongoing research is aimed at addressing the technical bottlenecks and improving the performance of BSS methods.

Rather than citing the source of the strains as (authors, year), what if I write "the strains were provided by" and I cite my previous paper? the reason for doing so will also be explained in the cover letter.

You need to cite your previous paper, so that citations for your study increases. You are right, but that is the limitation of your work. You cannot hide.
If you write "the strains were provided by" then not just the reviewer, but the editor will also ask what the relation between your work is and one provided strain. Then you fall in tricky situation.

Hi, I am totally congenitally blind with nystagmus. When using marijuana, I am better able to direct my attention to a certain point in space and extract information about my surroundings, whether it be through sound or residual light perception. Since marijuana heightens my awareness of vestibular information, i hypothesized that galvanic vestibular stimulation would produce similar effects, but without the psychotropic effects of the marijuana. Yesterday, I had the opportunity to try GVS for the first time, and it was able to suppress my nystagmus to the extent that I had a much better sense of where my eyes were pointing, which gave me the perception of being able to direct my attention to that point, kind of like using a joystick to place a videogame character at certain coordinates on a 3d screen. I believe that there is potential in using GVS to help some blind people take advantage of residual light perception, and to use the vestibular system to enhance spatial imagery in those like myself who have difficulty extracting spatial information from sound. My current collaborators are in Boston, and I am moving to Washington DC in two weeks. I am looking for a DC-based collaborator to join us on this project. Now a days publishing or uploading manuscripts with preprint organizations /websites before actual publication is gradually becoming popular.
Does preprints [publication] have any negative impact on actual/journal publication or blind peer review process?
Relevant answer
Prof. Sarwar J. Minar: Some journals allow preprints, others do not. So, your decision should also depend on the rules of the journal in which you have published your research paper. On the other hand, I have a different perspective on uploading any preprint anywhere before it has been published. Why do you let others know about your insights and methodologies before publication? You should avoid telling the other researchers about the details of any one of your papers until it has been published and seeing your name by yourself. You may say that I am somewhat old-fashioned, but I have a different perspective on uploading any preprint anywhere before it has been published by your name. My advice is not to put your research anywhere until it is published. It is a security issue:
  • Your manuscript may be copied and then published by others before you can do that. This stealing of your paper might be happening. So, you must wait until the paper is accepted and then published in that journal. Then, upload that research item on any platform you wish.
  • You should avoid telling the other researchers about the details of any one of your papers until it has been published and you are seeing your name by yourself.
  • A journal may have automated plagiarism software to check the paper before admitting it to the reviewing process. There are chances that your paper can get a rejection at any point. Thus, to avoid this problem. Publish the preprint after you got the paper as "ACCEPTED".
  • There may be a "cold war" between the professors of a given department. They do not like to discuss ideas as others will "steal" them and publish an article on them without giving credit to the one from whom they got the idea. My suggestion is to keep your work "private" and share it only with those who are really interested.
  • Academic publishing remains a competitive process. If someone else has recently published a paper very similar to mine, mine is less likely to be accepted. So although I may share my topic, I prefer to keep my methodology, findings, and discussion private, until published in a peer-reviewed journal. So, there is a high chance that someone may claim your idea as theirs!
  • Preprint gives a false feeling of security. Personally, I would always wait until the paper is accepted by the editor of a journal. After that, I can post it as a regular research item on any platform you wish.
  • A reminder for all respected researchers: Don't put any research, including preprint, anywhere until you are certain that it is published and tagged with your name. The information presented in the preprint is potentially available to be stolen and republished. There is also a chance that someone may plagiarize your paper!
Finally, for the coming future, do not upload any paper anywhere until it is published with your name. Even if it is a "preprint"! For the time being, If you had done something like that as a "preprint", for instance, I advise you to delete the preprint from any elsewhere and wait for two months before sending the paper to any journal.

Relevant answer
Answer
I think it depends on they type of blindness. there would be different impacts on the circadian rhythm if a person is blind but can perceive light vs those that are blind and cannot perceive light. The later can have circadian disynchrony issues leading to other issues.

I have designed around 200 ligand molecules for inhibiting a protein. I am a bit confused with the sequence of filtering them, in order to select the best molecules for conducting MD simulation. I have been using autodock 4.2 with 1000 to 2000 runs for blind docking. And I am having problems deciphering and analyzing the results, since clustering takes forever, and the result was not so straight forward to analyze. so I decided to use Vina for blind docking the results were more desirable. so I was wondering if it is a valid method, do other researchers use Vina for blind docking?

Authodock via is not suited for blind docking and leads to errors. For blind docking there is a modification of Authodock vina named qwickVina https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-017-15571-7 It's easy to istall and really faster than canonical version, however the docking algorytm remains the same.

The peer review of manuscripts submitted to scientific journals is currently a basic pillar used to ensure the quality of papers. Besides other problems that the model raises (challenges such as the fact that it is unpaid, without charge to the publishers, or the debate about its relative reliability), I am very concerned about if blind peer review really helps to achieve the desired goal of accuracy and integrity. In many occasions I have received reviews by anonymous reviewers that have been very honest, fair and adequate to the standards of my discipline (Archaeology); however, in a number of cases, I consider that the anonymity of the reviewers has only served to spit poison without consequences, like the anonymous trolls that abound on the internet nowadays, without any intention of helping to improve the manuscript or any desire to ensure that the process serves to maintain the quality of the publication. I am quite sure that many others have experienced this same type of reviews, which are far from the ethical standards that should be considered, and which often have to do with personal vendettas, rivalries, and frustrations that have nothing to do with what the Academy should be. This has happened with journals with a low impact index, but also with others ranked high in international indexes. I consider that peer-reviews should be signed by their authors in all cases, without the option (as is usual nowadays in most journals) of remaining anonymous. If the review should always aim to contribute to the improvement of papers from a constructive perspective, and therefore to the progress of scientific knowledge, there should be nothing to hide about the identity of the reviewers, don't you think?

I agree with Michael Dan Arvig on this. Although it´s desirable, blinding of patients and/or health care providers/investigators is not always feasible. Check this non-blinded RCT conducted by our group and published in JAMA
But always have in mind that allocation concealment, sometimes also known as "blinding of randomization" is mandatory in RCT.

There could be several reasons, it is as follows:
• The sample was drawn from the same community (same college. (
• Not conducting an investigation equivalence among the members of the research sample (gender, age, university level, degree or visual acuity).
• The tool used to measure or diagnose unintended blindness, did not include items to detect falsification of the answer, or different positions for the answer (various alternatives).
• The tool used to measure or diagnose stereotype threat includes items similar to the items of the first scale (the first tool) and this is what led to the equivalence of the answer.
• Not choosing the appropriate statistical means for the study's objectives.

I"m hoping to connect with aphantasia researchers who are interested in individual differences (e.g. the presence or absence of aphantasia in congenitally blind people). I am congenitally totally blind and do have a form of aphantasia in that I'm not able to use other senses to form visual representations of the world or space around me. My conversations with other congenitally blind people shows that this is not what all of us experience; many of my blind friends can create pictorial mental images that use touch and sound. I think this is a research topic that could get overlooked because people assume that pictorial = visual, and therefore that congenital blindness automatically leads to aphantasia, when this isn't true. I have a very challenging time with orienting myself in space, and a lot of the methods out there for teaching blind people to travel rely on mental mapping to some extent.

True science and religion both seek truth so they can co-exist. Trouble is, modern India hardly has a true scientific temper (rather we are far away from scientific mind) and do hardly know our religion (religion is not fanatism). So, the your question may seem very pertinent but it is sort of impractical in the current context of India. In future, if at all a day comes when Indians would be lured by true education (not an educational to get a degree or a job) than that may slowly lift the vail of fanatism in the name of religion.

I am planning to do a docking of two proteins (one of which is 30KD and another one is 4KD). I would like to request the steps of protein protein blind docking. what are the online authentic resources for protein structure minimization for docking studies? is it always necessary to do protein structure minimization before docking in servers like cluspro, interEVdock(FRODOCK2) etc?
Relevant answer
Answer
If you do re-docking to benchmark your docking program, starting from a known complex, simply removing the ligand and docking it again is easiest (cheating), docking to the minimized receptor after removing the ligand, docking to an independent unliganded receptor structure and docking to a homology model are increasingly difficult tasks, as the receptor is increasingly different from the conformation in the native complex.
If you are really interested in finding the correct interaction and are not starting from a known complex structure, you will not just minimize the receptor to get a single starting structure, but produce an ensemble of slightly different starting structures, e.g. by MD or Rosetta backrub.
You may want to look at the CAPRI website (https://www.capri-docking.org/resources/) and the publications referenced therein (https://www.capri-docking.org/publications/) to see which methods were most successful in predicting protein-protein interactions by blind docking

I have done a mini "thesis" concerning depiction of Jewish food from a large U.S. media, and how they represented it in an Ashkenazi-centric perspective.
I argue in background with research by Dalia Kandiyoti and Melanie Katrowitz (2007) that U.S. society tends to have a strong Ashkenazi-centric bias in everything from literature to seminars concerning Jewish culture. And in background with the agenda-setting theory I argue that the media depiction of Jewish food, along with the research mentioned above, will influence its U.S. readers to conceptualise the topic of Jewish food in accordance with the bias in question.
In sum; Jewish food is depicted in an Ashkenazi-centric perspective in a U.S. media + U.S. society has an Ashkenazi-centric = U.S. readers will tend to conceptualise the topic in accordance with the prevalent bias, as the alternatives are marginalised as a whole.
My problem is the blind standpoint I have taken in Kandiyoti and Katrowitz research, as my thesis becomes very biased. But my research question concern 'Depictions of Jewish food and if it aligns with prevalence of Ashkenazi--centrism prevalent in the U.S.'.
I have probably taken water over my head. But If anyone can point out any obvious problems I would very much appreciate that.

Hello Albin,
A qualitative study, as opposed to a quantitative study, is neither hypothesis testing nor hypothesis generating. Hence, a key component of any qualitative work is the ability of the researcher to 'bracket' any prior knowledge or biases and let their work 'speak to them'.

I would appreciate any suggestions for effective methods for teaching geology to a blind student.
Relevant answer
Answer
Geology can be heaven for blind people.
1) Let you think what is possible to do with touching minerals with different shape (large mica flakes, pyrite cubes, amphibole prisms, magnetite octahedra, leucite icositetrahedra, garnet dodecahedra, calcite scalenoedra, and so on).
2) Fossils are even better. In particular, it useful to let blind people touch objects with the same shape but with completely different origin. For example, let you think to a cone with variable heights and radius/height ratios. It could be (and you can show and give in hands): 1) belemnite; 2) hyppurites; 3) horn; 4) tooth; 5) coral; 6) hybodus and so on. All these fossils can be found in e-bay for a few dollars/euros and you can talk for half an hour in describing all the fossils and their use.
3) Moreover, you can let blind people play in handling teeth of different origin (ursus speleus, ancient horses, spinosaurus, plesiosaurus, basilosaurus, carcharodontosaurus, mosasaurus, otodus, megalodon, mammoth, onchopristis, swordfish, wholly rhynoceros, enchodus, gomphoterium and so on). With less than 500/100 US$ you can buy one or more pieces of all these teeth.
4) You can 3D print scaled planets and Sun, to show them the relative size of the planets.
5) You can show also 3D plastic charts showing bathymetry and topography.
6) Rocks and minerals with different softness and hardness (e.g., graphite or graphite schists, talc or talc schists, granites, obsidians, greywacke, siltstone, and so on).
7) A normal Estwing hammer.
8) Iron and silicate meteorites, to show the different density of the rocks, with a pleasure to touch extra-terrestrial stuff.
I have served as director of the Earth Sciences Museum of the University of Rome (MUST = Museo Universitario di Scienze della Terra) for three years, and we have used these styles of interaction for blind people, receiving excellent feedback. Now I came back to my usual business that is igneous petrologist.

It is common, in the so-called "hard" sciences, that recent bibliographic sources are privileged compared to sources dating back several years. This practice is consistent with the notion of the constant construction of scientific knowledge from the knowledge already acquired. An idea as coherent with the myth of the inevitable progress that we associate with Modernity.
In the case of the social and human sciences, however, I have the impression that this tendency to favour in bibliographies recent documents could be the blind application of rules borrowed from other disciplilnes. Sometimes one might even perceive what appears to be a form of methodolatry, preferring recent analyses and discussions on a theme to the detriment of what researchers have said a few decades ago. I often hear the comments "Yes, but this study dates from several years... " to deny the interest of qualitative research using individual or group interviews. I find it hard to believe that the humans of 30 years ago are so different from those who live in 2019. And that newer is always better.

Theory predicts that blind fishes have an elaborated lateral line system with the number of free neuromasts increased. The high number of neuromasts is believed to compensate for the loss of the eyesight and to ensure proper orientation. There is one blind goby, the gobionelline Typhlogobius californiensis, which we found to have a reduced number and pattern of free neuromasts (see attachment). We related this loss of neuromasts to the life style of this goby. It inhabits shrimp burrows and is therefore seemingly not dependent on the lateral line system like blind fishes living in larger habitats.
As far as I know T. californiensis is the only fish species which shows a combination of lost eyesight and reduced lateral line system. But are possibly more fish species with a reduced lateral line system out there?

Hi Andrew,
'lost' and 'reduced' should be used in the sense compared to the typical pattern of the group from which the blind species derived.

Double blind reviewing may serve as guidelines for the authors to improve their submission. But many researchers say that double blind review involves some high-profile experts who are 'gate-keepers' against low-quality papers; the problem is that reviewers may be biased, prejudiced and even sometimes uninformed. Many doubt their impartiality. Double-blind is a kind of 'black box'. Nobody is sure what is inside.
Relevant answer
Answer
Double blind peer reviews have some merits, but there are also a couple of fundamental issues:
(*) As
Temitayo O. Olaniyan
has written above the process very often is not double blind.
(*) Editors have a viable interest to get papers rejected in order to keep the acceptance rate low.
(*) Editors publish their own papers or those of their buddies.
(*) Reviewers lack the knowledge or are simply rude. Quite often they do not understand the methodology. This makes a lot of sense if you consider that as an author you spend a considerable amount of time writing the paper and the reviewers usually reads it within a couple of hours.
(*) Reviewers often are PhD students and junior faculty who lack experience.
And the list goes on...

Hima - 'authenticity' is not just reliant on levels and degrees of blinding. More blinding does not necessarily equate to more rigour. Other factors - such as levels of control, randomisation are key. A well conducted single-blinded trial is better than a poorer double-blinded. If both a single and double-blinded study are of equal quality - I would argue no one is better than the other - as long as the context for the level of blindness is well rationalised and justified in each case.

I established a predictive theory of visual organization for cognitive archaeology, with applications in psychological warfare (Stein, 2017), though Gallese poetically presents this as an aesthetic discussion. Most importantly, Gallese brings up the Cartesian Dualism problem, how can images exceed the sum of the parts of the brain involved in processing them. According to Carlo Severi (2007, Chimera Principle), images in themselves have moral agency informing our selection of actions, as if we were furniture for images to occupy (Ian Stevenson, MD, Vol. II Etiology & Biology, 1997, p. 2090), yet images aren’t reducible to, nor limited by, our material substance. In a sense, this is part of a long discussion towards eventual censorship of what images are harmful if they occupy our brain like a piece of furniture, as it has been understood since the 1960's Albert Bandura studies that violence is most easily learned visually, and which images we wish to influence us positively. An example of images projecting Gallese's discussion of the hand effect, with possible correlations with sign language, are in Cognitive Archaeology Ch.5 Uomini on prehistoric 'handedness' in language as a cognitive style & Ch. 9 Pelegrin on early hand tool making at https://cognitivearchaeologyblog.files.wordpress.com/2017/04/wynn-t-2009-cognitive_archaeology_and_human_evolution.pdf

I would - together with a co-worker, probably - write the editorial, but I would not take the opportunity to publish a paper in it, unless it was right on the mark - and maybe even then I would hesitate. The editor shall not take such opportunities.

Blind peer review, date to first decision, date to acceptance, content...
Relevant answer
Answer
If by your question you ask whether I trust an article more when it is published in an indexed journal with a high impact factor, the answer is “perhaps and no”. The important thing for me is that a paper is peer reviewed, and journals that are peer reviewed will be indexed sooner or later. The impact factor of a journal tells me, how widely the papers are known and how likely it is they have influenced the general opinion. Credibility, however, has shown to be slightly negatively correlated with journal impact factor.
But perhaps you ask whether the scientific landscape becomes more transparent with journals being indexed. Well, yes, probably. Indexing is one way to get information on journals. The important distinction with journals, however, is between real and fake (look up” Beall’s List”). And for articles and authors, the article-related metrics are much more important.

Hi Laverne,
Usually all major ophthalmology conferences have a session dedicated to the impact of blindness and the prevention of avoidable blindness, so you should focus on these. The major ones are the American Academy of Ophthalmology (https://www.aao.org/) meet, the ESCRS (European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons) (http://www.escrs.org/), the World Ophthalmology Congress by the ICO (http://www.icoph.org/refocusing_education/world_ophthalmology_congress.html) and also ARVO (https://www.arvo.org/) in case your work deals with basic sciences in ophthalmology. In addition to these try to take up memberships of the IAPB (International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness) (https://www.iapb.org/) and the American Foundation for the Blind (http://www.afb.org/community/events/1). These organizations regularly have workshops and meets where you can pick up knowledge and share your work. I have also attached the IAPB brochure for membership benefits for use.

To date, the peer-review process is blind and the reviewers always do as a volunteer.
To improve the peer-review process, should the peer-review process be open, the reviewers be paid for their contribution and take responsibility for their comments to guarantee the fast speed and high quality?
Is it possible or necessary to build up the system?

I'm analyzing my data in spss. It's on the effects of blindness on the production of mother tongue sound. I have used GLM, Univariate model. I have entered degree of eyesight and the type of sound as the fixed factor. When I want to do post-hoc test I receive this warning:
The variable name sound in the POSTHOC subcommand is not a valid factor and will be ignored. A valid factor is a fixed main effect in the design.
No valid factors found in the POSTHOC subcommand. A valid factor is a fixed main effect in the design.
Execution of this command stops.
Can anybody guide me?
Relevant answer
Answer
Hello Tahere,
In SPSS GLM/Univariate, it is the independent variable ("factor") that is specified for possible post hoc tests, not the dependent variable. It sounds as if you entered the DV when you requested the post hoc tests. That is, you should have specified degree of eyesight.
Good luck with your work.

Hi,
first read the Sentinel documentation and understand the SLC processing.
So, from the head of the image SLC you can get the specific information and
1. Open the file
2. Read the file
3. Action on it and use one of the well known complex image format(such BIL,BIP,BSQ)
Notes
BSQ, BIL, and BIP represent alternative ways of storing images in memory or on disk.

Hello,
I'm interested to hear if anyone has any time-efficient strategies for blinding images for analysis. Currently in my lab group, after doing staining (e.g. immunofluorescence) and imaging, we ask another lab member to rename each of our image files, saving a list of the original and new names. We are then able to analyse our images under a different name (thereby unaware of whether we are analysing control or treated tissue). This system works well but is quite time consuming.
Has anyone found a more efficient system or any software which will rename images whilst allowing you to access the original names after analysis?
Thanks in advance.

Standard statistical software packages such as SPSS are not accessible for blind individuals that utilize screen readers.  Do any of the blind researchers out there have any suggestions for accessible software for statistical analysis? I am about to supervise a blind student who is trying to find tools to overcome this challenge.
Relevant answer
Answer
I have not used qualitative software in 5 years, but in 2013, NVivo did NOT work with JAWS or any other screenreader I tried,. I would be extremely surprised if this has changed. I used Atlas with JAWS and could use most of its features. I would try Atlas first; you can probably get a trial version. If this research you are doing on your own and your sample is relatively small, then you may not want to use specialized software. Instead, you may want to work out your own coding strategy using MS Word or similar program. The Institute for Community Inclusion at the Univercity of Massachusetts Boston used to use Atlas because of its accessibility with JAWS, and you may want to check with the ICI to see if they are still using Atlas or if they have found something else. There are other qualitative software packages, but I have no experience with them. You may need to download trials with someone who knows that software and experiment with your screenreader. Good luck!

Should ophthalmologists consider treatment options beyond intraocular pressure ? What will these options be? There is normotensive glaucoma also; what should the approach be in those cases?
Relevant answer
Answer
Currently, the only known modifiable risk factor for glaucoma is intraocular pressure(IOP) and hence is the focus of most physicians for glaucoma treatment.
But I understand why you ask this question as there is a paradigm shift in our understanding of glaucoma over the past 5 years or so. Newer drug classes like the ROCK kinase inhibitors, adenosine receptor agonists and newer prostanoid receptor agonists are also on the brink of entering markets after successful trials. Advanced modalities like SiRNA and Gene therapy has also been explored for glaucoma treatment.
What is important to note is the need for this research as glaucoma progression has been noted in several patients despite being maintained under target IOP and also invariably in NTG patients. The role of mematine, brimonidine and other neuroprotective agents has also been explored but results don't match up to the expectations. There is a lot to do yet but at the same time IOP is something that is imperative to control. These anti glaucoma drugs thus still have a very important, though quickly diminishing importance in explaining the patho-physiology of glaucoma, which unfortunately yet excitingly remains an elusive hunt for glaucoma researchers to pursue.
An excellent review of the newer drugs is attached for your reference.

We are developing a project, ACE - Assisted Communication for Education, that proposes an architecture to support real time translation between sign and oral languages in both ways. This translation can then be used by the blind, so they can perceive the sign language as speech. Similarly, blind people can communicate with the deaf by using speech or written text which is converted to sign language. This bidirectional translation is available to assist the communication between the deaf and non-deaf communities using the VirtualSign tools.

Dear Paula Maria Escudeiro,
thank you very much for your response. I'm very interested in your technology for the following reason. I'm trying to solve a problem where a blind person could perform a piece of music in the .mp3 format, changing the tempo and sound at his discretion. I need to convert the movements of the hands like gestures into control signals of the program, which in real time will execute music in accordance with the wishes of the user. Currently I have a program in C#, WPF, where these issues are solved by simply pressing the buttons from the computer screen. However, it would be great if the problem of controlling the tempo and sound would be solved with simple hand gestures. That's why I was interested in your technology. However, I'm a little confused by the fact that you solve the problem with the transfer of gestures with special gloves with sensors to capture the sign, as well as Kinect for capturing body movements. This means that people must have these technical devices. My goal was to solve the problem of transferring the gesture from the computer screen in real time, then to instantly execute this gesture as a control by tempo or sound.

Answer
Imad Badi, do you mean you want to apply GA algorithm for channel (parameters) estimation? If so, you could model a cost function with the concerned factors, then you could optimize the cost function with GA algorithm, or similar algorithms. If you are interested, you could see some of mine papers about channel estimation and signal detection based on evolutionary algorithms (including GA):
