This is a blur area in the bibliography I study, and the numbers used are mostly rounded up (N=500, N=1000 etc) without any other explanation. What would you suggest?
Relevant answer
Answer
If your main goal is to estimate values in the larger population, then the formula using the estimated variance makes the most sense. Alternatively, if your goal is to test specific hypotheses, then G*Power might be better suited to your objective.s

Why do we write the word 'Reference' in Research Articles and not 'Bibliography' ? How the two words are technically different ?
Relevant answer
Answer
The main difference between bibliography and references is that references contain the sources that you have cited in your paper, whereas a bibliography includes all the sources that you have used for your paper, whether they are cited or not.

Hello, i 'am currently working in my thesis reportI i already organize my bibliography with Mendeley, but the supervisor asked me to separate books from articles, is this possible with Mendeley ? how ? if it's not what is the alternative?

i sent the request to Mendeley support their answer was:
Hi Fatima,
Thank you for contacting Mendeley Support Team.
This feature is currently under consideration and will be included as part of a future update. The Development Team does not have an exact date on when it will be available. I will still file this as a feature request so our Development Team will acknowledge that this feature is really helpful for many Mendeley users.
Rest assured that once we received an update that this is now available, we will post it in our release notes, blogs in supporthub.
I really hope that this product/policy limitation will not affect the level of service I rendered today.
A workaround for this is to do:
Manual editing:
  • Complete your Word document with all your citations/bibliography.
  • Once the document is finished, save an original copy.
  • Create a backup copy of the document
  • Using the backup copy, manually edit the references/citations that need to be merged/separate

Hello! I would like your opinion regarding the proper way to disperse MOF particles (with average particle size around 25μm) in a polymer solution for electrospinning process. What I do, is to use an ultrasound probe with 20% Amplitude and 50W. During sonication, the solution is heated up quite fast so I do 3 to 4 intervals of 30 sec. sonication and 30 sec. rest. I am not sure if during sonication the polymer solution could be damaged or not (breaking the polymeric chains into smaller ones). Then, I use magnetic stirring overnight. After that, the solution seems to be fine but when I perform electrospinning either the metallic needle clogs or the produced electrospun fibers have large MOF particles size (after SEM observation). The materials synthesis is based on bibliography. Do you follow a protocol for dispersion that might be useful?
Thank you in advance
Relevant answer
Answer
We had good results by sonification of particles in the cooled solvent and directly afterwards stepwise/slowly adding the polymer. Afterwards stirring overnight. I've done it with micro and nanoparticles.

I'm working with the latest version of Mendeley Reference Manager. I have some references with the same author and same year, and the journal where my paper will be published requires suffixes (a, b, c) in those cases. I tried to edit the citations and manually override them; and though there is no problem with suffixes in the in-text citations, the suffixes don't appear on the automatically generated bibliography. For example, in the attached pic those two "2021" should have "a" and "b" respectively. Please, help out a young researcher :)

In a word document with several sections, is it possible to insert a bibliography (list of references) at the end of each section with Mendeley?
With mendely, it is usual to insert only one bibliography in a word document. Is it possible to insert several bibliographies (one specific at the end of each section or each chapter of the document), while keeping the possibility of dynamic update after modifications in the text?
Relevant answer
Kind regards, Mr. Jean-Pual Dossous, in response to your question, I consider that it is not yet possible to update the bibliography in different sections of the document. But I suggest thaht you have to prepare separate files and at the end, you combine them as pdf.
I checked the official Mendeley help center and found this:
Position the cursor where you want the bibliography to appear within your Word document. Then click to insert the bibliography.
Note that currently Mendeley Cite does not allow you to refresh the bibliography so only insert the bibliography when you have finished adding all of your citations. We are working to add this; check back for details of when this will be available.
I wish you the best.

I am using Mendeley Reference Manager for the last 5 years. I am using the updated version of the Mendeley Reference Manager in Microsoft 365. Finding hard to use Updated Mendeley for Referencing. The older version was really Good.
I am using both "Mendeley Cite" and "Mendeley Desktop". I have cited the reference in the word file of my manuscript and I am also able to change the Reference style according to the journal. However, some journals ask for abbreviated form of the "Journal Name" in their bibliography like the journal Heliyon. I got the bibliography for Heliyon Journal but there is no abbreviated form of the Journal name. I have tried with several journal reference styles but got the same issues. One such example is---
The format should be like this
Name et al (year). The RSK family of kinases. Nat. Rev. Mol. Cell Biol. 9, 747–758.
Updated Mendeley is providing this format
Name et al (year). The RSK family of kinases. Nature Reviews. Molecular Cell Biology 9, 747–758.
Anyone facing this problem or I need to set up anything in Mendeley.
Does anyone suggest to me how can I solve these issues?

Question

Hi,
I'm currently wrapping up a manuscript for submission and I found that when I tried to add a new citation in the word document using Endnote plugin or change the bibliography, my entire reference section is messed up. Basically, I have 50 citations in total and after any such changes, the number drops to 20 with many citations just disappear, along with the superscript number in the main text.
I tried to reinsert the disappeared citations again but they just do not show up. I open the "Edit & Manage Citations" tool and I can clearly see instances like there are five citations at the same location but only two are numbered and actually showing up in the reference section. In another word, these citations are still there, but they are just now hidden from the reference section and the superscript numbering, and cannot be re-added.
I uploaded a screenshot example and I really don't know what to do now. For some context, I am writing in ACS template with provided styles. But I'm not sure that is the problem and I have never encountered before. I have changed three computers and the issue persists.
Please help. Thank you.

Question

Hey,
currently I am writing an article using the Nature citation style. However, I have a question on how to cite the same book multiple times (e.g. different chapters/pages of it).
I contacted their author support, but did not receive a reply.
Can I use the same superscript for different page numbers (corresponding to different references in the book) for in-text citations and use one reference to the book in the bibliography? This would complicate giving page numbers. Or does each citation (and thus page number) require an own superscript/entry in the bibliography? This in turn would unfortunately lead to a (in my opinion) unnecessarily long reference list. Apparently, giving page numbers is not required for the Nature citation style, but (for an unknown article), I find it cumbersome to read an entire book just for the sake of finding a potentially small piece of information that has been referred to.
I'm curious how you solved this issue.
Kind regards
Philipp
Relevant answer
Answer
It is important to cite the original source when using an idea, quotation, data, image, etc. that is not your own. Failing to cite your sources constitutes plagiarism. The Council of Science Editors (CSE) style is a standard citation style used across many disciplines in the physical and life sciences. The CSE style encompasses three distinct systems: • Name-Year: In-text citations appear in brackets, and consist of the author(s) last name, as well as the document’s year of publication (e.g. Smith 2008). The end reference list appears in alphabetical order by author last name. • Citation-Sequence: A superscript number (e.g. 1 ) is assigned to a document the first time it appears in the text, and the same number is used whenever that work is cited. The references in the reference list are listed numerically in the order in which they first appeared in the text. • Citation-Name: All references in the reference list are organized alphabetically by author last name, and assigned a number according to their order in the list. This number is then inserted in the text in superscript font (e.g. 1 ) wherever the work is cited.

I am looking for advice concerning a (supposedly) known practical issue : article overloads. While doing my PhD I was convinced that everything who went through publication was worth reading and understanding. My opinion as evolved since then for very practical consideration : lack of time to read biblio and absolute necessity to "pre-screen" something before deciding if it's worth reading or not.
Concerning scientific paper, the prescreening can be tricky. Since the format is very standardized as well as the wording (nothings sounds more like a paper than a paper), I often end up reading half a dozen page on a paper, annotates parts, spend time... before deciding I shouldn't spend time on it.
Do you have some "tricks" to share in order to lower that waste of time? While these "tricks" might be completely non-scientific of course, I still would enjoy them
Relevant answer
Answer
If you are reading the prior work just for your literature review, you don't have to meticulously read them as if you are reviewing them as a referee. However, if you identify some errors or shortcomings, take a note of them, perhaps you might end up with another paper idea from them. You just have to identify what is different compared to your paper and how your paper is an improvement or a different but important paper looking from another aspect, etc. If it is highly related to your paper, and you need to be very specific to convince the readers that your contribution is significant, then you should read it very carefully. If you need to get a general idea about the area, for a potential research, then you will need to read the most important (highly cited) and early work on that subject very carefully. You also need to read the most recent work, to be up-to-date on the subject. Your reading of the earliest, the most influential and the latest papers on the subject will lead to more papers to read, to guide your literature review and to improve your understanding of the state of the art in the area.

The librarian of your institution may help you find out which specialised literature databases / electronic journals are available to you. In addition, you can use Google Scholar to search for scientific articles: https://scholar.google.com. For example, this is a recent article (2020) I found as one of the first hits searching for "Large N fsQCA" (including the quotes): https://maggetti.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/Thomann-Maggetti-Designing-Research.pdf
While I know nothing of your particular field, the journal title (Journal of Social Research Methodology 19:445-459) seems promising if you look for information on the methodology - you may check on the impact factor of this journal to find out if it is a reputable journal in your field. Combine different search terms to focus on the subfield you are most interested in, follow the references cited in articles that seem relevant, search for more articles by the same main authors.

Dear all,
My question is how to do the attached citation bibliography using Mendeley? i.e. merging many references in one number and letter of each.
Relevant answer
Answer
Hi, dear Murad.,
Step 1: Open Mendeley and Word. Click the location of the paragraph to be referenced. Step 2: At the top of the Word "References" tab, click "Insert Citation." Step 3: A small window opened. Select the "Go to Mendeley" option. Step 4: Now in Mendeley software, select all the references you want (using the Ctrl button) Step 5: Click on "Cite" option (now you can see that, top of Mendeley software) Step 6: Finally, go to Word and change the "Style" to modern humanities research association 3rd or IEEE or Nature (or any Style that a journal or university wants from you).

I need some bibliography, sources, articles etc., for a literature review ( academic project) about the responses to the US banking crisis in 2008. Thank you in advance.
Relevant answer
Answer
Dear Angeliki Antona,
I studied the sources of the global financial crisis of 2008, including the issue of subprime bonds, which were used to raise funds from investors from which further mortgage loans were granted. With time, the quality of these loans was getting weaker, however, in order for the market to grow and the prices of securities on stock exchanges, these loans were still granted despite the fact that it was obvious that most of these loans would not be repaid on time. The credit policy has been liberalized too much. The rating agencies, despite the low quality of subsequent mortgages, continued to give the highest ratings to investment products in which subprime bonds sold to investors were wrapped. The majority of mortgage loans were insured by a few insurance companies. Central banks have kept interest rates on for too long, because the management of these banks followed the principles of economic liberalism in relation to financial markets. Financial supervision institutions did not notice in time the strong increase in credit and investment risk in the banking system, in which commercial and investment banks used the so-called large scale. "innovative" credit derivatives whose operation and risk valuation models were known to few people operating in the financial sector. Too mild, too liberalized lending policy has led to the fact that the above-mentioned mortgage loans were also granted to persons who did not have the required level of creditworthiness, people who did not have a permanent job, who had other loans outstanding, etc. And because the main form of collateral for these loans was credited real estate, when overvalued real estate appraisals started to fall suddenly and some borrowers stopped paying back loans, then a serious problem appeared in the financial system. When the risk valuation models at investment banks noticed the lack of necessary reserves to cover possible losses and began to unethically sell almost nothing worth junk securities for subsequent investors, many market participants noticed the beginning of the great financial crisis. A dozen or so hours later, one of the largest investment banks, with over 100 years of banking history, the bank Lehman Brothers declared bankruptcy and thus in mid-September 2008 began the largest global financial crisis in the history of economic development so far. I conduct research in this area. The conclusions of the research I published in scientific publications that are available on the Research Gate portal. These issues can be found in my publications, which have issues in the title regarding the global financial crisis and investment and central banking. I invite you to cooperation.
Greetings,

As we face a digital era that connects researchers and researches from around the world there is a tremendous amount of works available for new researchers and their projects and works. Are there any methods, tools, strategies that can improve the bibliographical research stage?
Relevant answer
Answer
the internet services data bases are very powerful to obtain any information in the open arena. However, some sites are secure and permission may be obtained from editors and/or those who have published papers there. The academic community is so kind that members may even download some important works and send to you so that your work can be enriched when the publishers permit so.

Any suggestion of bibliography in a wide sense (papers, guidelines, systematized experiences) about "male" parenting (fathering) and in special in the context of children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities and/or "mental disorders"?
I'm working in a workshop for fathers, in a clinical setting.
Relevant answer
Answer
If you are interested in papers on the topic of parental leave and challenges for fathers in the implementation of their caring activities with regard to gainful employment as well as family, partnership and parentship, I can recommend some of our English language papers. Although these have focused on the current German context, they also deal with the topic in relation to the international state of research, so that you can also get a good overview of current debates in this area.
Aunkofer, Stefanie; Meuser, Michael; Neumann, Benjamin (2018): Couples and Corporations: Negotiating Father’s Participation in Parental Leave in Germany. In: Revista Española de Sociología (RES) 27. S. 65–81 (Download: https://recyt.fecyt.es/index.php/res/article/download/66446/41189)
Neumann, Benjamin; Meuser, Michael (2017): Changing Fatherhood? The Significance of Parental Leave in Work Organizations and Couples. In: Liebig, Brigitte/Oechsle, Mechtild (Hrsg.): Fathers in Work Organisations. Inequalities and Capabilities, Rationalities and Politics. Barbara Budrich. S. 83-102. (Link: https://shop.budrich-academic.de/produkt/fathers-in-work-organizations/?v=3a52f3c22ed6)
About Fathers you could also look up the work of e.g. Andrea Doucet. But since the field of research in this area is so broad, it would help to specify what aspects of 'fathering' you're looking for.
Kind regards!

How to properly cite interviews in the following cases:
1. "in-text" and "footnote" and their bibliography (both with consent of using names and anonymous)
2. using software like Mendeley, Zotero etc.
Relevant answer
Answer
  1. If the interview is "recoverable", which it has to be for being considered a proper reference, you can cite the source directly (web page/broadcast/newspaper article).
  2. To my knowledge, Mendeley doesn't support this type of citations.

I want to do some bibliography research and I have a table with the average age of 10 samples. Each sample has different size. Also I don't have the SDfor every dataset info.
Relevant answer
Answer
let (n1, x1), (n2,x2),.....(n10,x10) be the sample size and average respectively, of sample 1, sample 2 ,..... sample 10.
you can calculate the grand mean as X =(n1*x1 + n2*x2 +....+ n10*x10)/(n1+ n2 +...+ n10)
similarly, if s1^2, s2^2,.....s10^2 be the variances of samples 1, 2,...10 respectively, you can calculate the Pooled Variance S^2= [(n1-1)*s1^2 + (n2-1)*s2^2 +.... +(n10 -1)*s10^2)] / [(n1 - 1) +(n2 - 1) +.....+(n10 - 1)]
squared root of pooled variance gives the Pooled Std. Deviation.

Stanisław Barańczak no doubt translated John Donne's Meditation XVII into the Polish language (most probably as Medytacja XVII). Unfortunately, for unknown reasons, the available databases and bibliographies do not include the precise bibliographical reference to that translation. I will be very grateful to anyone able to provide it to me.

Donne, John. John Donne: 77 Wierszy, trans. and ed. Stanisław Barańczak. (Biblioteczka PoetÓw Jézyka Angielskiego, Vol. 16, gen. ed. Stanisław Barańczaka.) 2nd. ed. KrakÓw: Wydawn Znak. 224p. First ed., 1984.
Presents a general introduction to Donne’s life and poetry (5–[14]), followed by translations into Polish (with English texts on the opposite page) of 34 selections from the Songs and Sonets, 8 elegies, 10 epigrams, Sat3, Storm, Calm, Goodf, the Holy Sonnets, Christ, Sickness, and Father (16–197) with notes (200–13). Concludes with a selected bibliography (214–16), an alphabetical list of the English and Polish titles of poems (217–20), and a table of contents (221–[25]).

We have done a bibliography over 150 solvents, and we found that there is an exception of the propiophenone.
The viscosity-temperature dependence of the propiophenone is very low unlike other solvents.
For your knowledge,
  • lnAs= -8.51621
  • Ea (kJ·mol-1) = 5.103731442
  • Molar mass (g/mol-1) = 134.178
  • Density (g/cm3 at 25) = 1.0105
  • Vapour pressure (kPa at 20 C) = 1.99
  • Surface Tension (Dynes/cm at 20 C) = 34.1
  • Refractive index= 1.526
  • Magnetic susceptibility (cm3/mol) = -83.73·10−6
In the attached file below, you will find some physical properties of other solvents.
Thank you in advance.
Relevant answer
Answer
I see that the dynamic viscosity varies with temperature with the slowest manner when we compare with other solvents, i.e. the viscosity activation energy has the smaller value (i.e. feeble value).
It's hard to explain why one molecule of propiophenone necessitates a feeble activation energy to pass from one layer to the adjacent one in the shear phenomenon, i.e. the transition is more easy than other molecules?

Author guidelines; in the reference section, the following statement is written:
"PCI Journal styles reference list entries using the bibliography entry format from the Chicago Manual of Style; the entry elements are separated by periods. When citing references within the text, use superscript numerals in numerical order starting at the beginning of the paper. The Reference section at the end of the paper should also list references in numerical order, and the references and numbers should coordinate. Every cited edition of a reference must be listed as a separate reference."
I looked at every Chicago Manual of Style available in Mendeley. Non of them would list references in numerical order at the end of the paper. All of Chicago Manual of Style list the references at the end alphabetically based on the last name of the authors.
Can anyone help?
Relevant answer
Answer
Yasir - it does seem confusing. Vancouver is the main numerical format - and Chicago is not traditionally numerical. This journal may have 'adapted' Chicago to also incorporate numerical - through accident or design. The best thing to do is look at a recent volume copy article and just 'copy' that format.

There are many ways of performing EFA and CFA. You can expect identical factorization only if the methods used are identical. For example, if you get a 3 factor solution in EFA, you need to fit a 3 factor model also in CFA. CFA most often uses maximum likelihood estimation, whereas in EFA, principal component analysis is also common. Both methods may well produce different results.
As a reference, I recommend Brown, T. A. (2014). Confirmatory factor analysis for applied research.

I found a problematic stream in my research field (International Management), but IM doesn't usually use extensive source criticism such as humanities would. Does anyone know some research that covers fields such as:
- ideological bias of authors
- citations in inaccessible languages
- non-scientific sources (e.g. popular science)
- eclectic bibliography
I know that some textbooks for e.g. PhD students might cover this passim, but are there any journal articles that covers this? Especially interested in critical (e.g. postcolonial) views on the problems of "non-Western" sources.

There are many scientific criticisms of scientific works, according to the approach used in the research, and the most famous curriculum in scientific research:
1- The historical approach: The critic examines the influences that influenced the scientific work, such as studying the surrounding environment, the social and cultural conditions, and the previous and contemporary events.
2 - The method of deductive or deductive: It connects the mind between the introductions and results, and between things and reasoning; on the basis of logic and mental reflection, it begins with the colleges;
3 - Inductive approach: It represents the opposite of the past; it begins with the particles, bringing them to the general laws. Experimental approach: It is the experiment that relies on the basis of research work, away from logical premises, historical conditions, or mental development
We must take care of these approaches in order to achieve accurate scientific criticism
