Hi Song, as you understand, multiple areas are interesting when applying BIM.
I would focus on asset data management, e.g. how to pass the physical asset information to the digital environment without any flaws.
Another area to me is data exchange, e.g. what tools are best to read different file formats to improve the workflows and the quality of 3D models and their related information.
Regarding the research method, the mixed-method approach will help you to process and understand different contexts.

Why not look at designing a building that has a zero carbon footprint?
1.) Pumping of water requires a lot of energy, usually 20-30% of society's electric and gas use--so put a water catchment system on every rooftop, to be used for flushing toilets and outdoor watering. The catchment system will also act to shade the roof, so that less will be needed to cool the building in summer.
2.) Calculate the lifespan of a building, usually between 60 and 100 years, calculate how much energy it will need to cool, heat, and light over that lifetime, and buy carbon credits to produce a carbon-neutral building--and make that part of the selling price of the building.
3.) On the roof install solar panels, and that will do two things--shade and cool the roof and lower the need to cool the building in summer, at the same time, provide carbon neutral electricity.
4.) Install double the insulation in the roof and walls, to conserve on cooling and heating.
5.) Drill a "cooling well", to draw cold air up from underground, to use to cool the building in summer. I saw this built into a building near Reno, so very little electricity was needed to cool the building with additional air conditioning.

Hello,
I am currently working on a systematic review and targeting ( Automation in construction) Journal. I reviewed about 20 papers of their systematic review published papers in the last two years. I found that the average number of papers used in the study is about 100. Moreover, the search engines are usually (Scopus and Web of Science). My question is, my identified articles are only 24 (from Scopus only). Would that be enough ?? my topic is a specific topic related to BIM, which means the papers are expected to be lower than average.

Both temperate and virulent phages can mediate transduction, although most successful transductions are mediated by temperate phages. Hi, are there any specifications about how to model BIM models in terms of object information and modeling style for specific applications or in general?
For example, for quantity take-off, the specification specifies that the elements should contain concrete grade attributes etc. and the slab should be modeled with higher priority than beam in beam-slab joints like the attached picture shows.

If you really want a conference, then look at the specific BIM application you worked on and go to a conference focussing on the application, not BIM. My prefered area is in Waste management & BIM , where I have read about using 4D BIM & 5D in waste management , but I have not reached a significant research gap to work on it, so is there any suggestion towards gap areas in using BIM towards waste management?

The current stage of the BIM learning curve and maturity allows construction practitioners to design out both wasteful practices (lean) and solid waste at the design stage. It is definitely a great area of research because construction waste have significant negative implications on cost, society and the environment.
Depending on your research capabilities and availability of data, you may measure, quantify and monetize the quantity of solid construction waste footprint that can be reduced due to the use of BIM in the project. Of course, you would have to compare two or more similar BIM and non-BIM construction projects. Your greatest challenge will be to determine the reduction attributable to solely BIM since lean production principles and offsite industrialized solutions have proven to reduce solid construction waste in projects.
You may search the following paper to use as a good starting point

Hello,
I'm about to start a new industrial project in which we want to estimate (interpolate) the INDOOR temperature at unknown 3D positions in possibly complex 3D room geometry based on sparse temperature measurements. For example, see the attached simplified 2D image but remember that my real problem is in 3D (sensors are at known fixed (x,y,z) positions and temperature need to be estimated at arbitrary (x,y,z) position).
I found lots of papers related to kriging in the field of geophysics but these methods are quite complex and do not usually support geometric constraints like indoor room geometry.
I know FEM might be related to my problem but I'm not really interested in complex heat transfer modeling (diffusion, convection, etc.), just simpler instantaneous estimation which I could compare to experimental measurements.
Some kind of kNN with inverse distance weighting might be sufficient and support geometric constraints easily enough?
My goal is to find a good enough method, to be validated experimentally, not necessarily the best and most precise method.
Here is the kind of information I'm looking for:
  • Some review or STAR article about indoor temperature modeling/measurement.
  • In increasing order of "complexity" and realism, what interpolation methods would you use?
  • Known software, library/toolkit that implement such methods.

From what I've found in the industry, most groups will just do the conversion by hand or hire it out to a freelancer or outsourced company, which seems very long and arduous (expensive).
Is there a great need to simplify or automate this process?

Actually, there is no way to do it very cleanly and easily. You can find a few algorithms (from point cloud to BIM model, algorithms in rhino-grasshopper or in revit-dynamo) but it is still quite "artisanal". Nothing magical yet :)
But ... actually this is a hot reseach topic. Researchers are evaluating the possibility to use AI algorithms (especially image recognition / items classification algorithms) in order to transform a raster image (or 2D images) to 3D BIM models. But this needs a lot of intermediate operations.

BIM as a research area has been profusely explored but definitely not exhausted. I believe there are still endless research pathways for BIM, but the technology has suffered the publication- apocalypse or explosion, making it extremely difficult for novice researchers to easily find their path or research gaps in the literature.
Lean construction has also been profusely explored. Yet, there is also more room for research in this area, especially in developing countries.
Definitely, research works linking BIM and lean construction should not be affected much by the publication explosions of both concepts.
To obtain relevant information for your dissertation, you may employ the following approaches.
1. Open the Scopus database and conduct a constrained search query using a combination of both "lean construction" and BIM.
I suggest you search "lean construction" AND "Building Information Modeling" in the "Title" only because if you search them in Title/Abstract/Keyword section, you may be overwhelmed and stressed by the countless hits or results.
When the Title search returns the results you may sort by "highest cited" and read the first 10 most cited articles and then sort by "newest" and read the 10 latest articles. This approach will help broaden your horizon of both the landmark knowledge and the latest development in the linkage of BIM and lean construction
2. Simply conduct a regular Google search using the following search strings and read the relevant articles
a. "Lean construction" AND "Building Information Modeling"
b. Lean construction" AND BIM
c. Lean construction" + "Building Information Modeling"
3. Before and/or after the above, discuss with your (potential) supervisor because they may have knowledge of the latest developments in the field to offer useful suggestions and guides

That could make it possible for you to join various littératures that address the same problem in various ways or levels. check other key words that you can use that are related to tqm. I would like to link two topics, LCCA and BIM, each of which deals with "structural and earthquake engineering" and "construction management" in civil engineering, respectively.
I am trying to investigate on LCCA of a structure equipped with Tuned Mass Dampers (TMDs) based on principles of Performance Based Earthquake Engineering (PBDE) for different seismic hazard levels (this issue is related to structural engineering). It depends on the product and the way the product is used by the organization. What I'm seeing lately is that the vendors are more willing to work with their clients to determine the right balance of license types. It's not just per seat or per core any longer. Some vendors base licenses on revenue or have a "basket" of licenses that anyone can use (we used to call this concurrent licensing).
Bottom line, there is no single answer to this question. It should be determined by analysis and should be able to change after the first year's usage have either confirmed the initial usage assumptions or called them into question.

Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) has achieved good performance in image style transfer, e.g. transfer a landscape photograph to a painting style (Monet, Van Gogh), and vice versa [1].
Should we expect the same good performance for using GANs to tranfer a textureless 3D model image to a real-life photo style? If so, what is the general implementation procedure, and do I need to train the GAN model from scatch with a great amount of images from both domains (3D model and real-life photo)?

I would suggest the integration of Green Building, Building Information Management, Augmented Reality and Interactive Voice Response to improve construction productivity.
In terms of sustainability perspective, circularity of green building material to eliminate waste or called cradle-to-cradle/circular economy concept, life cycle sustainability assessment to integrate environmental, economic and social aspect of building and the entire social aspect of green building (like the impacts of building to the well-being and heatlth of the occupants) are also great topics.
