dear friends,
when the analysis of dairy wastewater ( from milk industry) for oil and grease by partition gravimetric method (extraction with n- hexane) according to APHA 5520 B method, how can we extract the fat part of the sample. fat tends to form emulsion and does not extract to hexane. when you add alcohol to break the emulsion, it is with the aqueous layer ( not extract to hexane layer).then the oil and grease value is less than the expected value.
Relevant answer
Answer
A coagulated chemical such as aluminum or iron salts with industrial waste water, after which the mixture is deposited. Raising the temperature sometimes helps to break down the emulsion, and the amount of sludge produced in this case is large and difficult to dr

Question

Dear colleagues
A) I have a sample (n=132) and I performed a multiple logistic regression. I have 1 dependent variable (dichotomous variable: yes/no) and 6 predictors (2 continuous variables and 4 categorical variables) in the final model.
B) I have another sample (n=75) and I performed a multiple logistic regression. I have the same dependent variable and 6 predictors.
The two samples are totally independent from each other.
I have two questions:
1) How can I see that which model are significantly better than the other one? Higher Naegelkerke R2? Or how?
2) I have to plan a study with a sample size calculation? I would like to prove that the B method is better. G*Power is not optimal and cannot calculate the necessary sample size in this specific case.
Thank you in advance.

Dear Zoltan,
I assume you are doing a cross sectional observational study. If you do another study or combine the two set of data comprising 255 individuals, you may use softwares or online checkers to calculate the power of the study.
Alternatively, if you intend to start a different study, it is better to first do sample size calculation using software or online calculator for your desired effect size.
Best,
Olusegun

A very good afternoon, :)
I apologize for coming straight to the question without any introduction. Actually I could not think how to start.
So the question is: To write a (good) better Doctoral thesis, which parameters needs special attention and which ones need to be avoided?
My second question is how to write the introduction section? This particular part seems too difficult to start and arrange.
Please guide me in this regard.
With regards,
Bhaskar Ghosh

Answer
Agree with Andrey Hernández Batista the Introduction chapter should be written last - it tells the story of your research and clearly you need to do the research before you can tell its story.  Within the standard five chapters you will no doubt receive guidance from your institution and supervisor on what needs to be included but I also recommend keeping a 'journal' a hard back lined book into which you write your thoughts, keep a note of references, jot down something you might hear on the TV or radio, record details of problems you encountered and how you overcame them and so on.  Keep this journal with you all the time - you never know when some gem of an idea will emerge!

The 40-minute interview is about a lecturer's experience with teaching tertiary international students. I find what I said in the interview might be very interesting and helpful to my colleagues and my students.
Relevant answer
Answer
You, as the person who was interviewed, have control of what you said.  Unless you have previously agreed not to, you can share your own thoughts, assuming you have recorded the interview yourself.
I do not think you should share the voice of your interviewer without permission.
Of course, if you want the interviewer to give you a copy of the recording, the interviewer would have the right to say no.

It would be of great help for a doctoral student I know.
Relevant answer
Answer
It`s not an easy task for a blind person coding interviews without help. Not only speech to text has to be available but more complex guidance from the software to handle different modules, memos, variables... Perhaps you`ll get some more suggestions out here.
Keep the fingers crossed and best regards

How to formulate the entomopathogen Beauveria bassiana to bioinsecticide?
Relevant answer
Answer
Dear Mohammad:
The formulation you need will depend on the means of application. A liquid spray formulation will require an aqueous suspension, but a dust spray formulation requires some diluent/carrier material. Talc is often used, but there are other mineral diluents/carriers that can be used. Dehydration and over-hydration of the living spores is an important consideration because the longevity of the spores is affected. In your own work you used finely-milled corn flour, so that is also a possibility as an organic carrier/diluents and I think other have used powdered milk. For delivery of bioinsecticides by managed pollinators, we are now using a proprietary mineral-based carier/diluent which could be sent to you for trails. Please let me know.
