Azores - Science topic
Azores are a group of nine islands and several islets belonging to Portugal in the north Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Portugal. The islands are named after the acores, the Portuguese for goshawks, living there in abundance. (Webster's New Geographical Dictionary, 1988, p102 & Room, Brewer's Dictionary of Names, 1992, p42)
Questions related to Azores
I am currently preparing a geotouristic trip to the Açores but I couldn't find any information about the age of the small island of Ilhéu de Vila Franca do Campo at the south coast of São Miguel. It was a surtseyian eruption ... does anybody has further information about its age?
Thank you in advance

Dear Colleagues
By mid April 2018 a freediving spearfisherman collected this specimen near the surface on the S coast of Terceira Island, Azores, Portugal and was kind enough to film it swimming and collecting the larva which I keep frozen in sea water thus it being, in perfect condition. Together with our colleagues @Manuel Biscoito and @Ronald Fricke we've started to study it albeit with no conclusions so if anyone can give us an idea or even be willing for a - presumably justifiable - short note on an icthyology journal we surely appreciate it.
Please contact me via my e-mail: joao.ps.barreiros@uac.pt
Many thanks and best regards,
JP

In recent years we have been observing various pro-independence movements around the world such as Catalonia, Scotland, Bougainville, New Caledonia, French Polynesia, Greenland, Papua, California, Guam, Faroe Islands, Azores, Kurdistan, Cook Islands, Niue, Tokelau and Rapa Nui. Are we experiencing a new wave of nationalism and independence, like that of the 1960s and 1990s?
We have isolated a facultative bacterial previously, which was capable of decolorization of azo dyes under anaerobic condition. Now we want to estimate the azoreductase activity of this strain. Some researchers used the characteristic absorption peaks of azo dyes as indicators of monitoring, while others believed the peaks of NAD(P)H was better. Is there any criteria for measuring the azoreductase activity of various bacteria?
Can anyone provide me a reliable source on Ulva rigida, Enteromorpha intestinalis and Sargassum vulgare protein content (%) during the year in the Atlantic?
I've been having some trouble on getting good values on samples collected in the Azores.
This movie was obtained last week at the N coast of Terceira Island (Azores) by regreational divers. Helás the specimen was not collected. After almost 30 years of research and thousands of dives in these islands, I've never seen this.
Could anyone be so kind as to help identify this?
Many thanks and best regards,
JP
