Hey guys, had some issues with this myself and built a product called Phonic (www.phonic.ai) to make this super easy in the future. The platform is entirely built around the collection and analysis of audio in a survey format.
Gave Nick Byrd a hand with a think-aloud study recently if you'd like a quick reference on how everything works. Would be happy to help anyone else trying to conduct audio related research- just shoot me a message or leave a note with our Intercom on the Phonic website.

The source material for me is a National Park Service "unigrid" brochure; the end product will be an audio-description equivalent, so a purely audio form, probably MP3, shared via mobile devices. I have not been able to find any previous empirical research attempting such a cross-modal translation. I'm looking for methods/methodologies to build upon. Can you recommend any?
Relevant answer
Answer
Dear Brett,
This sounds like a great project. My suggestion would be to conceptualize what the end product would be by thinking about several questions, such as, who is your audience, would the MP3 be something that only those visiting the area would receive or would it also be podcast or accessible on a website, would it include information not in the brochure, i.e., background or historical information, etc. Once you have determined the parameters of the MP3, then you could start working on its actual production, selecting a voice over talent, choosing background sounds, doing the audio recording, audio editing and sound mixing, etc.
I hope this helps,
Paul

Gordon Monahan uses this approach for this interesting piece with motors and piano, no loudspeaker involved, presented in many different cities around the world. See picture on top left of the page.
