The Waste and Resource Management Strategy

The production of waste presents significant challenges to the University as the associated legislative, economic and environmental pressures can be difficult to control and rationalize. This Strategy provides) vision for the sustainable management of waste, which will allow the University to:

• Manage resources more efficiently

• Prevent and minimize waste

• increase recycling and participation

Goals/Objectives

• Minimize waste generation;

• Maximize reuse, composting, recycling and material recovery

• Develop waste management practices in cooperation with the community

• Adjust procurement policies so they are reflective of commitment to waste management principles;

• Ensure waste management practices are safe and effective;

• Minimize costs; and Become a regional leader in waste management.

This will provide the following benefits to the University:

• legislative compliance

• improvements to reputation and image

• implementation of internal policy and strategy commitments;

• cost minimisation and revenue enhancement;

• reduced environmental impact

• support the Data Protection strategy through improved management of confidential waste streams

Hey Lauren, just remembered an article on 3D printed houses, I saw the other day. I think, this technology could be a great benefit in reconstruction after disasters and also in slum upgrading, if the technology is advanced and costs are further reduced. Thus, in Cities of the Global South, there might be a huge potential for prefabricated housing....

Shanghai has recently introduced a new policy aiming to increase pre-fabrication for new construction in the inner City in steps to almost 100% within some years.- One of the reasons is to reduce pollution from construction activity in the city.- Less dirt, dust, traffic, noise etc.  - ressource Efficiency and controlled quality might be an other aspect. 

To me it is totally truth. I had same experience and I've seen the same in many different schools of architecture in Latin America and Europe. To me is really unbelievable how design is treated independent from construction, considering that architecture, to be such, it has to be built. However in training architectural workshops (common format to teach architecture) you see design standing mostly by itself, without deep comprehension of how it has to be build up. I call that "paper architecture". I have to say that many professors love such things, they believe is a kind of "art". Unfortunately most of the time is no more than a nice drawing. Actually after finishing Ms in Architecture, I did not know but nothing about construction. I learned by doing when I built my own house. It has been so far the only work I've done as architect in my life anyway, because I was since always interested in cities. And here in this field I've seen another fact which still surprises me: architects advocating being in charge of cities. I've seen many colleagues doing urban planning without any understanding of urban process, and facing this complex discipline only as a "design" in a large scale. This is totally wrong and I think is playing against the prestige of the profesion. In my case everything I've done as urban planner I have learned in postgraduates studies, where you have to study a lot of things you can hardly learn in schools of architecture. Nowadays you see more and more that cities are becoming a matter of science. At the same time you see how architects are loosing their historical role within urban issues. Schools of architecture should take seriously this trend and reformulate their curriculums towards the future.

I think this depends on what actually you want to teach the students, for example teaching BIM in the early stages minimise its use as whole, as students in the early stage didn't yet know about construction documents and buildings simulations, so BIM capabilities will be limited architectural visualization, which is not the main capability of BIM, also this will make the students lake some of the architectural skills like sense of scale/ratios (this is according to my personal experience with students).

before exporting/importing the file it is better to re-check all the requirement and the procedure of export/import. It is to minimize the mess up. Export/import between Revit (arch, structure, MEP) maybe works (sometime) but to another vendor it is a big question. It is probably need software from a single vendor.
