In Arabic poetry, self-praise is a common idea, yet it is essential to think of the different purposes behind a poet's self-praise in each case as there are a number of factors (the literary age, the personal experience... etc)
Relevant answer
It is commonly acknowledged that self-praise (be it of the poet's person, his tribe or even his nation) was a major motif of the Pre-Islamic period. Although through later ages, it was still there, it was indeed a bit more individual than otherwise, mainly due to the introduction of Islamic ethos and beliefs. Some traces of such pre-Islamic mentalities are, however, still present, but it is assumed that such expressions unfortunately pose prominently at times of national distress.
Modern and\or contemporary poetry is engaged with more human crises than personal glory (f the past): the Nostalgic 'fixation' seems to have gradually been disappearing because of the serious pressures Man in the Arab World (or the Whole Universe) undergo.

Non-native English teachers are often regarded as not as competent as native teachers especially when considering their accent, pronunciation and English language abilities : what do you think about this issue ?
Relevant answer
Answer
BAAL (the British Association of Applied Linguists) has, rightly, barred the use of the phrase "native speaker" in any job advertising it accepts.
It does, after all, make little sense: one only has to look at Language Depts of UK universities to see staff with non-English language background making valuable contributions - better, in fact, than many natives who seem to be not that bothered to investigate the machinery of their native language enough to fill this post? There is also a word-wide trend away from 'Core-speaker English' to 'Global English'. The one exception might be use of native speakers when it comes to issues of pronunciation. Still-

It is noticeable that Arabic literature is so little in many fields. Talking about academic research, why do you think Arabic research (i.e., research published in Arabic) is so little. Why aren't there Quality Academic Journals that publish in Arabic although there are many Arab researchers who can publish in Arabic or at least translate their English research into Arabic?

I am an Arabic lecturer from Indonesia who intend to compose a proficiency test to measure my students' Arabic competencies. In this case, I consider to copy the format of TOEFL for English proficiency test. The challenge is, I have difficulties finding any native Arabic recording for that kind of test. Is there any Arabic listening assessment format which resembles TOEFL?
Thank you very much! I really appreciate each word you give as the responses of my question.

Taufiq Rafat was the Pakistani poet, who lived in USA lately. He was a wonderful poet. I want to know, if some M Phil or PHD thesis is done on Mr. Rafat?
Relevant answer
Answer
There are several entries in the internet on him, which I presume you can access. I also checked Google Scholar (an excellent site!) and found several entries, which I list below. But I am not certain whether they are the end results of MA & PhD work. I suspect that if you contact the authors they might give you further leads. Most of them are Pakistanis.

India had never aspired to live in isolation and always kept its doors open for the
people and culture from across the world throughout the history. The philosophy of tolerance and coexistence of all faiths and races had been the essence of its civilization. It remained a melting pot for the world culture and civilization. The intensive interaction between India and Arab world was dynamic, diverse and multidimensional. However, the impact of this interaction was very much visible and lasting in the domain of culture and thought. The main aim of this discussion is to debate on the cultural exchanges and the contribution of India to the Arabic literature and legacy throughout the centuries.

Specifically I am looking for lists that may be able to identify anonymous contributors to The Edinburgh Magazine and The European Magazine and London Review during the 1820s and early 1830s. I have consulted The Wellesley Index to Victorian Periodicals, 1824-1900, but it didn't return the desired info on Thomas Richards (1800-1877). It lists some contributions to other magazines, but the ones I'm looking for.
Thanks in advance for any leads.
Relevant answer
Answer
Update
It seems most of the periodicals I am working with haven't been indexed yet, but the Wellesley Index has been really helpful in establishing first leads in tracking down a good number of Thomas Richards's contributions to the periodical press in Wales, Scotland and England during the 1820s. There are some articles that cannot be authenticated (yet), some look like collaborations, but on the whole it is a much fuller picture at this point than what I had (next to nothing) a few weeks back.
Again, thanks all around for your suggestions!

In World Literature, my students read "The Romance of Antar" and loved it. I plan to use it as a standard heroic text, but I'd like to know more about Antar ibn Shaddad and the poems. The definitive translation is from the 1880s (retains the poetry) and there seems to be a lot of legend mixed with known facts about Antar, the Poems.
Aysha Bey (UAB)
Relevant answer
Answer
Dear Aysha,
There has been much speculation about whether they were taken down or not. Historical records have all asserted that the idols were removed, with no mention of the muallagat. Perhaps it would be inadequate to associate idolatory with the unique talent of poetry which was highly recognised and praised by the prophet itself as a faculty.
This is a fantastic site dedicated to Al muallagat
