Dear respected colleagues,
I am grateful for your kind support in the following matter.
I want to register as a Chartered Engineer (CEng) at (IMechE). However, my BACHELOR and MASTER degrees in Iraq, which most probably they are not accredited by IMechE and Engineering Council’s academic requirements for registration (UK). I am not sure about that.
I checked the following webpages from IMechE:
However, I have not received a clear picture regarding to the membership as a CEng at IMechE for a mechanical engineer whose education background (bachelor and master) from Iraqi universities.
My question is: anybody from Iraqi education background, Iranian, Syrian, East Asian or from any other country education background [that not accredited by IMechE and Engineering Council’s academic requirements for registration (UK)] EVER APPLIED FOR CEng membership at IMechE? and obtained membership at IMechE as a CEng?
I am very thankful if anybody experienced the similar situation and GOT MEMBERSHIP AT IMechE to share his/her experience here or email me at ((((((zhwan.dilshad@gmail.com))))))).
Thank you very much for your kind cooperation and great support.
Best Regards,
Zhwan

we might have heard some state universities programs and or private ones being said to be non Accredited. And some are Accredited.
What is Accreditation? What is the most significant influence of being non accredited in academic environments such as colleges or universities?
Many thanks!
Relevant answer
Answer
What is accreditation?
Accreditation is a process of quality assurance and improvement, whereby a programme in an approved Institution is critically appraised to verify that the Institution or the programme continues to meet and/or exceed the Norms and Standards prescribed by regulator from time to time. It is a kind of recognition which indicates that a programme or Institution fulfills certain standards.
In India we have NBA ( National Board of Accreditation)

Universities seek to have their academic programs internationally accredited, what is the benefit of that?
Relevant answer
Answer
Program Accreditation is the process by which national or international professional bodies evaluate the quality of a study program of a higher education institution. For a program's accreditation, a government or a professional body formally recognizes the program on the basis of certain predetermined minimal criteria or standards.
The success and effectiveness of the study program against the set goals and objectives, program learning outcomes, areas of strengths-weaknesses-opportunities and threats (SWOT), adequacy of student support services, the progress of improvement and strategic plan for further improvement of the academic program are the major areas of accreditation. In short, to evaluate and measure the quality of a program for giving it a formal recognition is the objective of a Program Accreditation.
It helps national and world rankings. If the academic programs of a university are internationally accredited, the university will get international research projects and funds, the faculty members will get various opportunities for their academic development, students will get facilities to avail themselves of higher education at other universities by transferring credits, and they will get involved in different research projects, etc. Furthermore, inter-university collaboration and MOUs are possible for an accredited program to work together or work as a partner with other universities.

Hi. I've been setting up a mcpd ge analysis according to dgf 18 10 method using a new gcms. I practiced this analysis with exact same way in 2015 many many times and there was no problem. But now with different chemicals and gcms, I always take exactly 2.5times lower mcpd results When I compare my results using samples recently analysed by accreditated labs. Im using exact same method. I tried changing transesterification duration and alkaline solution amount, used smaller glass tubes to minimize sample loss, tried changing NaBr and Nacl solution amounts etc. The ph of My NaBr and NaCl solutions are nearly 1. Is that normal? Do you have any recommendations for me? Why am I measuring lesser MCPD than normal from my sample?
Relevant answer
Answer
Robin Bumbaugh Thanks for the reply. I've checked internal std concentration once more. In addition, I gave my internal std to another accredited lab to practice a known sample once more with my std. All good. Then, I've tested the recovery by doubling the internal std amount to see if I'm losing some MCPD while extractions. I've obtained almost twice the internal std peak at the same sample. That means I don't lose significant MCPD during extractions and derivatization is adequate. Therefore I've focused on transesterification conditions. There are some recent studies that practiced different levels in transesterification parameters such as sodium methoxide solution amount and reaction time. Also, I'm planning to increase reaction temperature despite being advised otherwise.

Every country is going to have its own rules so you need to check locally. I would guess there is a bio safety office at your institution.
But in general if the plasmid is in normal strains of E. coli and not carrying any toxic or potentially dangerous genes then you usually do not require any special precautions or accreditation beyond what you might need to do standard microbiology.

Mohamad Bleik I guess the most reasonable starting point would be to have a look at existing performance indicators. Those are pretty easy to find in the literature. Here is a classic paper to start with, but you should also check out the recent literature.
The next step would be to identify new indicators (e.g., the cost of fraud, as was mentioned above) that would be especially impacted by blockchain. That by itself would be an interesting research topic.
Whether you use a questionnaire or simply get the metrics from the companies depends on your research design. You first need to identify the relevant indicators.

Hello everyone. My lab wants to accredit qualitative detection of WNV on Sacace - SyCycler 96 RT-PCR. For doing that, the instruments must be calibrated. How can we do it?
The distributor from who we bought it said that this instrument does not need to be calibrate. Is that true?
Thank you all.
Relevant answer
Answer
I guess everyone is distracted with the outbreak, so I'll give you the answer from a metrology/calibration perspective. The short answer is maybe.
There certainly IS something to calibrate. Looking at the technical specifications, I see:
Temp Block range 0-100°C - You may want to calibrate the whole range or only what you use
These Things can be calibrated:
Absolute accuracy: ±0.2°C
Uniformity of Thermal Block temperature ±0.15°C
Average Heating Rate 3.3°C/s
Maximum Heating rate 3.5°C/s
Average cooling rate 2.1°C/s
Max Cooling Rate 2.5°C/s
Hot Cover Temperature 105°C±1.0°C
The difficulty comes in the term "calibration." It refers to two different things. Most people I know in metrology consider a verification of performance a "calibration." and this is what you're referring to. Many of the engineers I know think calibration is STRICTLY when a unit is adjusted to within specifications. Doubtless this is what your vendor is referring to.
What YOU NEED for your lab is an accredited certificate indicating the unit is performing to specifications on Temperature, Uniformity and time. About the only way I know to do this is with a multiplex data acquisition unit. (DAQ). You'd need to have 8-9 temperature probes placed around the heating block all recording the data simultaneously. Top, middle, bottom, left, center, right. One placed near the probe indicating temperature, and probably one on the "Hot Cover." Use a half second or 1 second sample rate. Take the temperature up and down across the range, stopping at whatever critical points you use, but making sure to get your minimum use and maximum use temperatures. Depending on criticality I usually use 5-9 testing points. Some people use as few as three (min-max and halfway between.)
Finally, take your DAQ data and put it into a spreadsheet of some sort (Labview if you have it, Excel or whatever if not.) When you graph that (Time- x,Temp 0-100- y) you should see at one second intervals the temperature rising in nice slope of 3.5°, plateauing at your set points, then dropping again. Now your unit has ideally been connected to the same computer your DAQ is so you can compare the data across the range. This is why Labview is probably best to see this both in real time and to compare the set points to what the SyCycler 96 is saying the temp is, vs what the DAQ is recording.
Is it adjustable? Probably. But it might need to be repaired to fix it. What if your temp rise is 7°C? That could be a problem. What if 37°C is actually 44°C? There is almost definitely an offset to the device, if no ability to adjust it.
That said, you can get a 3rd party Calibration with ISO 17025 accreditation to do this for you. The calibration lab would be have all the equipment and software to do this calibration for you in probably 2-3 hours and get you the paperwork either the same day or next day. You may need to request the graphs. Usually 3rd party labs do not provide that. But I like them.

Greetings, esteemed colleagues:
I am collecting a little anecdotal evidence to see if a recommendation I intend to make is supportable. I have looked in a number of academic catalogues for guidance, and found that none of them answers this question to my complete satisfaction, thus requiring me to infer a response. So, let me "set the table" and see what you all think? My questions will appear below the vignette:
You are contacted by a student who is not interested in a pursuing a graduate degree at this time. She is a working professional with a Bachelor's degree, but rather than apply for the grad school or a certificate program, she only wants to take one graduate course for personal edification. Assuming you want to admit her:
1. How do you classify such a student for admissions purposes?
2. What are the implications for financial aid eligibility with this admissions calssification?
3. Are there other reporting or accreditation concerns for record keeping?
I look forward to your responses.

is this item frequently requested in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) paper?
how can I provide this type of documents ?
thanks in advance

Relevant answer
Answer
Hi,
It is not very common in CFD studies that ethics committee approval is requested. It depends on the application though, if you have used CFD in biomedical area or if you have used test animals in your research, this document is almost always necessary. I see that you work at a university, so you should consult the administration for that. If your university has a school of medicine, it is more likely that an accredited ethics committee exists. Otherwise try to find another university nearby that can provide the document.
I hope this helps.

Should you write to the publisher or the author to express your view seeking for possible correction, or just keep quiet?

I would make a record by the responding to both the authors and the publisher. Impress on both what the correct information and context was in your publication, and suggest a remedy in a published erratum by the offending authors. There may have been an innocent error and the correction could me published. Otherwise if the publisher and author ignore these corrective measures, you have at least a record of your attempt if that becomes important in the future. Good Luck!

Answer
If you are asking if you can use private patient populations as research participants, the answer is yes. When you are identifying your research population, it is important to state where the participants will be coming from. As long as you submit this to the Institutional Review Board for ethical consideration and it has been approved, then you may ask them if they wish to participate. As with any research population, you will need to explain the purpose of the research, obtain consent, and identify the risks, benefits, ability for them to withdraw without negative consequences, and other required standards. I am not entirely sure if this was what you were asking, but hope you find it helpful.

there are different approaches to contributing to extant literature. First, consult with your professor. Second, conduct a literature review. Third, discuss with co-students in your cohort or program. Fourth, combine these methods.
I hope the references below feeds your curiosity. Review references in each article.
Good luck.

I find your project really interesting. At the moment I am collaborating with a small company in the field of metrology, specifically in developing procedure to optimize the quality in laboratory.
We have developed a new approach to use metrology: it is a software platform able to organize the metrology in different application field, such as an analytical laboratory, etc. Specifically, it permits to organize the calibration of all laboratory instrumentations (e.g. scales, pipettes, thermometers, etc.) and the intermediate checks by the use of control charts, to elaborate data and estimate the uncertainty of measurement with the use of different approaches, to verify during the time the metrological characteristics of the test methods by means different tools that assure the quality. Moreover, the validation protocols of the methods for the measurements can be organized by the use of statistic tests to realize the same protocol, in accordance with the technical sectorial standard.
We are really interested to collaborate with you in this topic research area.

Stephen,
Thanks for responding on the project's behalf. The LUMINAR project is ended, and we are in the final bidding stages for a follow-on project called LaVA - Large Volume Applications - here we take some of the fundamental research from LUMINAR (and some new ideas) to generate some Demonstrators for Metrology Systerms operating in factory environments. These will involve aerospace, automotive manufacture, with cooperation between several systems such as photogrammetry, videogrammetry, laser trackers, Frequency Scanning Interferometry, spectroscopic refractive index measurement. These will be a mixture of more mature technologies and some tat are really early concepts. At the moment I suspect we are at too early a stage of technology level to apply formal quality system approaches, but that will be a requirement of the eventual end users.

I am using closed reflux method for internal monitoring of water analysis. At the same time, we do send samples to accredited lab for analysis. The results from lab (titration method) and the digestion method (commercial digestion vials) differ greatly (~1000mg/L COD). What can be the reason for the vast differences?  Samples are taken from same point, same time, same preservation method.Thank you.
Relevant answer
Answer
The closed reflux method we use magnetic stirrer to stir the samples for 10 minutes, then pipiette 2 ml of the sample and add into the reagent vials. Heated for 2 hours at 150 degree celcius, and read the COD reading using the colorimeter. Still got difference with open reflux method.

I’m researching the evolution and future of specialized and professional accreditation in North American higher education. I’m looking for research articles and organization documentation that articulate what the future of specialized professional accreditation will be. Specifically, I’m interested in resources that delineate the current state of specialized professional accreditation, what it will look like in the future, and how accreditors, educators, and professionals will prepare for that future.

Check out the articles in the conference proceedings for the ACBSP Region 8 Journal. there might be something in one of the articles or presentations that suits your purpose.
ACBSP = Accreditation Council of Business Schools and Programs
ACBSP is a CHEA recognized programmatic accreditor out of Overland Park Kansas and Region 8 has member schools from Europe, Middle East, Africa and a large part of Asia. So it is a North American Accreditor with a Global reach.
ACBSP has a separate accreditation for Accounting, although business also recognizes distinction through certification such as CPA and ACCA.
ACBSP utilizes a peer review process through mentoring, trained site team evaluators, Board of Commissioners etc.
The Region 8 Journal has been published annually since 2009 and covers business accreditation topics in addition to an annual conference theme and applied applied research.

The Uruguayan legislation only allows banks the receipt of deposits, but it enables other institutions of financial intermediation to emiting electronic money. The question is if they can receive accreditations in account. It seemed that in Mexico the question would have been solved specially, but I ignore any details in the matter. The doubt appears on the juridical nature of the operation by which the above mentioned entities would get accreditations. There exists an article published here in Research Gate by Virginia Bado, under the title ¨Concepto and juridical nature of the electronic money ¨, that joins the topic in a very interesting way, but she does not develop it especially (pp. 15 and 16).

In the Indian context, non-banks such as e-wallets have been allowed small limits to receive money without KYC. After KYC process, those limits are enhanced. It is basically as a way to limit risk for the depositors and to enable oversight on the operators.

How the accreditations process measures mentorship programs for faculty and professional staff in higher education, and then determines such results to be an essential component for quality education?
Are mentorship programs for faculty and professional staff are not considered as requirements for providing quality education and thus achieving student success?
Is the accreditation process only measuring student success through the mentoring of students instead of the mentoring of faculty and professional staff?
Does the accreditations process in higher education report mentorship programs in higher education to be a consideration for quality education?
Relevant answer
Answer
North American library and information science education programs seeking accreditation from the American Library Association (ALA) are expected to encourage and support faculty excellence in teaching, research, and service through the systematic evaluation and improvement of faculty competence. The ALA's accreditation approach is not prescriptive, so there are no specific requirements related to the types of resources, services, and programs that programs should or must use to support faculty. So, faculty support may take the form of structured mentoring programs or another resources and services, such as teaching pedagogy workshops, annual reviews and tenure process support, peer-evaluation of teaching, to name but a few. The characteristics of programs, resources, and services that may be used to demonstrate effective faculty development can be found in the "Examples of evidence that might be used to indicate compliance with the 2015 Standards for Accreditation" section of the ALA's Accreditation Process, Policies and Procedures manual (see link).

Does accreditations process evaluate mentoring of faculty and staff in higher educaiotn?
Relevant answer
Answer
My 50 years experience (and numerous accreditation studies) say it does not.  The data used by teams is completely controlled by administrators who use the result to further their own careers. Thus they favor grand projects and never looks at how past projects were implemented.  No one pays attention to mentoring or progress by new faculty members..  The US higher education is being emptied out of any pretence to educate.

Performance of university is confused with accreditation or rating . is there a method to evaluate the performance of a university.
Relevant answer
Answer
I cannot give you a reference, but I think the current consensus is that there is not a uniform way to do this as positions and tasks vary. The part of the evaluation that is based on performance parameters generally should include several bibliometric indicators such as number of papers, number of citations and H-index.

When we want to accredit teaching hospital, educational process. Who can approve the history taking report of medical students being written on the patient medical record at the ward?
Relevant answer
Answer
Medical students gaining experience in outpatient’s clinics and admission wards are exposed to clinical clerkship as this is an important part of their training. There is paucity of reported patients’ experiences and perceptions of medical students.
It is suggested that  there  should be a concerted effort by  not only the medical tutors, mentors or coaches  but also the media tools to raise patient and community awareness on the role of a teaching health facility. With the input of the community and other relevant stakeholders, there should be a way found on how to remind patients of their rights and responsibilities.
The intention should not be to restrict patients’ participation in clinical teaching, but rather to facilitate such instruction which should only occur when both
parties involves are aware of what is going on.
Finally, as patients obtain significant benefits from being “managed” by students, it is also important that any harm that may be realized as a result of student involvement in patient care is minimized and this should be the role of their staff supervisors.
The interaction between medical students and patients in most of the developing nations appear to be patient‐cantered aimed at not only facilitate learning, but also provide care and support to patients.
Medical students are perceived by patients as enthusiastic and detailed in their
undertaking.
There is need to nurture the mutual relationship between the student , their teachers and the patient.

In the age of open economy and transformation of material wealth to information as  wealth, and the widespread application of IPR, it seems that the geoscientists are not getting their due in terms of number of patents applied/granted when compared with other sciences. It does not mean that we, the geoscientists are not generating enough information or design processes worthy of getting patents. Even the routine academic performance is also being measured in terms of number of patents generated out of academic research!! On the contrary, it seems that the number of patents granted to other sciences is multifold higher than the geosciences. Please share your thoughts on whether we should work on problems worthy of generating patents. I am putting forth this question to get convincing answer and also to spread awareness on the importance of IPR regime in geoscientific research.

The GAUC conference in Romania (May 2013) will address, among other things, the question of global accreditation, see http://www.agauc.org. But is the world ready for this? Is this an inevitability given the increasing globalization and convergence of educational standards?
Relevant answer
Answer
Further to Roberto comment, it is worth acknowledging the increase in global education analysis  made by institutions such OECD and United Nations. However, these measures-statistics are complex to compare among countries due to existing inherent differences in almost every aspect of social life.
Although a global accreditation is tempting, it would not be an accurate measure of quality, specially when speaking about social sciences - embedded subjectivity.

An Analytical Testing Lab of a manufacturing Unit need to accredit in ISO 17025 System for In-House Testing
Relevant answer
Answer
Dear Farman,
The difference is as follows:-
1. The commercial laboratory does not have the conflict of interest in testing the products which come for testing from clients as all the clients are same for the lab. Whilst, In-house laboratory, once accredited to ISO 17025, when you test your own products, there exists the conflict of interest as you have vested interest and influence on the lab. To avoid this, ISO 17025 insists independency of the lab team from manufacturing team and its management functions. You need to ensure this.
2. The signing of testing reports from inhouse lab accredited to ISO 17025 should not be done by persons handling responsible persons in the manufacturing area. The test lab head should be qualified and be competent to check the contents of the report and certify the report for it's trueness.
Guess, this will help.

Getting accreditation for professional colleges has become a necessity in many countries  . Accreditation experts visit  the colleges for 2 to 3 days  to conduct an academic audit and verify the data given in the self- assessment report and then award a rank  . Do you feel the real quality of the education can be assessed in this short time and through quantification of complex variables involved in the teaching-learning  and research processes  in professional colleges?
Relevant answer
Not necessarily as these Agencies do not always take into consideration the culture of the immediate society/institution. I know from experience in the Caribbean, some internationally funded projects at some institutions failed to meet accreditation standards and were not accredited by the International Agencies. In one instance that involved setting up a garment construction training institution with a workforce component, whereby trainees can work and study, the international accreditation standards required that the trainees/employees be searched everyday on leaving/entering the compound. Well, students were not use to such measures and did not subject themselves to these searches. The latter affected the success of the project negatively.

There are multiple accreditation standards and processes for b-schools in the world. Some of the more familiar ones are AACSB (US), AMBA (UK) EQUIS (European). They follow different philosophies, approaches, processes and standards. While it may be a good idea to look at a school through multiple lenses, they are still a certification for conformance to a set of standards. Would it be prudent to:
1. Simplify the set of standards for conformance to cut out the maze of confusion, and more importantly,
2. Start including standards for design to support innovation that is the only way forward to keep business education relevant?
Relevant answer
Answer
Dear Mukul and Douglas and everyone,  I strongly agree with Douglas.  The question for me is what is the purpose of business education?  when we have answered it we may be in a position to have someone accredit it.
As we know, students have become decreasingly concerned with anything resembling ethical behaviour and one key reason for this is that they are increasingly only interested in earning vast amounts of money as fast as possible.  'Education' is therefore increasingly simply a tool or an instrument to that end.  Employees are a tool, society is a tool, and so on; the end result is a dystopian 'society' in which corporations simply use people (of course, there will always be the nebulous cloak of 'CSR' so we can all pretend that there is such a thing). For that reason, 'market demand' can never be an indicator that the teaching profession, through these accreditations should use.
There are interests other than those of the students, in other words and that is no bad thing.  There is such a thing as society and its needs.
