Example: In a study on academic performance, the student's age (independent variable) may not have a direct impact on grades (intercept), but when interacting with the amount of study hours (moderator variable), age may significantly influence the final grades.
What may be the main cause of this case?
Relevant answer
Answer
You can test the effect of your moderator variable as an interaction effect with your IV. Because they are both interval-level variables, the interpretation can be a bit tricky. I recommend that you do a search on "linear by linear interaction."

‘The longitudinal association between teacher–student relationship quality and student engagement was unidirectional’ as explained in your deep searched article. The qualitative findings reported students’ own perspectives on what they considered to be a good teacher and their ideas of how their teachers and classroom setting influence their affective and behavioural engagement at school. Two significant categories emerged: ‘teacher being’ and ‘teacher doing’. This research has not shown that actual teaching methods are immaterial to other issues, as you told.

I am a student at Pacific Adventist University ( Papua New Guinea) who is working on a research project for my Masters degree. The title of my research project is Establishing the Relationship between Metacognition Awareness and the Academic Performance of Nursing Students at the University of Papua New Guinea.
I would like to use the tool with a modification to the answering options. To turn the Yes or No options to a 7-point Likert scale; 1 being very untrue of me and 7 being very true of me.
Relevant answer
Answer
To seek permission to modify the Metacognition Awareness Inventory tool, you should try to contact the original author or publisher of the tool. You can search for the contact information of the author or publisher through online databases or academic search engines. Once you have identified the author or publisher, you can reach out to them and request permission to modify the tool for your research project. It is important to clearly explain your research project and how you plan to use the modified tool. Additionally, you may need to obtain ethical approval from your university or research institution before using the modified tool in your research project.

I am writing to you today about the educational experiences that Researcher.Life curate for researchers. We are in the process of creating a holistic training course for researchers specifically in Europe and have put together a survey to understand the needs and requirements of researchers better.  The course is meant to be most helpful for early-to-mid career researchers to help with finding work-life balance, emotional and stress management, self-improvement, and enhanced productivity. It would be great if you could share your inputs and ask fellow researchers who are based in Europe, and who are in your network to fill out the survey, that will really help as well (to get their point of view). The survey should take no more than 3 minutes of your time.  Click here to take it https://lnkd.in/dRpVk9Ve Thank you in advance for making time for this.  On behalf of the Researcher.Life Ambassador Program

The concept of learning styles (visual, auditory etc) has been disproven. People may have certain preferences, but they aren't individual learning styles. Saying that, you may have something else in mind under the label "learning styles". If this is the case, it's better to use another phrase in English. I'd agree with the suggestion to reflect on individual preferences and consider a range of options to study effectively.

The Influence of Parental Language Mode on the Relationship between Academic Performance and Disenchantment Rate of Middle School Students.
are there any theories of pragmatics and psychology to help with this topic.
Relevant answer
Answer
Yes, there are theories from both pragmatics and psychology that could be relevant to the topic of the influence of parental language mode on the relationship between academic performance and disenchantment rate of middle school students.
From a pragmatic perspective, one relevant theory is Speech Act theory, which explores the ways in which language is used to perform actions, such as making requests or giving advice. This theory could be useful for examining the ways in which parents use language to communicate with their children about academic performance and disenchantment, and the effects these speech acts have on the students' attitudes and behaviors.
From a psychological perspective, there are several theories that could be relevant, including:
  1. Social Cognitive theory, which emphasizes the role of social and environmental factors in shaping an individual's beliefs and behaviors. This theory could be used to examine the ways in which the language used by parents affects the students' beliefs about their academic abilities and their level of disenchantment with school.
  2. Self-determination theory, which asserts that individuals have basic needs for autonomy, competence, and relatedness, and that fulfilling these needs leads to greater well-being and motivation. This theory could be used to examine the ways in which parental language mode affects the students' motivation to succeed academically and their level of disenchantment with school.
  3. Attachment theory, which explores the relationship between early experiences with caregivers and later social and emotional development. This theory could be used to examine the ways in which the language used by parents affects the students' attachment to school and their level of disenchantment.
These are just a few examples of theories from pragmatics and psychology that could be relevant to this topic. By incorporating these theories into your research, you can gain a more nuanced understanding of the relationships between parental language mode, academic performance, and disenchantment rate of middle school students.

Lockdowns due to the COVID pandemic in last three years (2020-22) has played a significant role in the widespread of online based classrooms using applications like Zoom, MS teams, Webex and Google Meet. While substantial amount of the students were happy to complete their semester classes in due time without getting hampered by the lockdowns, thanks to the online based classrooms, there are also notable amount of students and parents who were complained regarding the online based classrooms that they have drastically distracted the academic performance of students.
Overall, I would like to leave it as an open-ended question. Dear researchers, what you think regarding the online based classroom? Is it an advantage for students or a disadvantage?
Relevant answer
Answer
Online-based classrooms are necessary for circumstances where the learners and teachers feel that the knowledge can be catered to without meeting in person. It is an opportunity for learners to learn at their doorsteps. Nonetheless, online classes are not as effective as offline classes for many learners who take education as a social process where peer learning, group dynamics, and interpersonal relationship are of high importance. Online class doesn't provide the experience of personal interaction while learning.

Assuming these variables are quantitative and metrical (interval scale or higher), you could compute Pearson correlations (assuming the relationships are linear) or run a linear regression analysis for each dependent variable.
In either case, it would be good to examine scatterplots first for each bivariate relationship to check for potential non-linearity, outliers, etc.

Pearson test can be used to find out the correlation between two continuous data sets.
Spearman test can be used to find out the correlation between two ordinal data sets.
Do we have any test to find out the correlation between ordinal data (mean score of Likert scale data set) and continuous data set (Academic performance in terms of exam scores)? If not, How can we do that?
Relevant answer
Answer
If you're using the mean of multiple Likert-scale items, you're already treating the data as continuous (i.e., interval), in which case you can go ahead with Pearson correlation.
An alternative option is to use the median or mode of the Likert-scale items instead and conduct an ordinal regression.

I support professors that the data could be considered a factor of a low R-square both missing data and outliners. However, the researchers should check for the reliability and validity of the questionnaire items. If you delete some items, the Cronbach's Alpha and Factor Loadings could be increased, and sometimes, the R-square could be increased. Otherwise, the multicollinearity effect should be considered. In your case, the explanation power to the phenomenon is only about 2.2%, which is very low and non-typical incur.

In many universities, notably in North America but most likely around the world, there are five-year reviews of professors throughout the careers. The reviews can take the form of assembling pretty well everything they have done in the previous five-year period, including providing vast documentary evidence of satisfactory (or even outstanding) performance in teaching, research and scholarship, and service (and, if applicable, in administration). This is generally an extremely time-consuming, intense and potentially stressful experience, and, equally, it is not always clear what the value of this exercise is. In addition to the potential for (conscious and unconscious) bias throughout the process as well as a number of forms and sometimes quantitative configurations, there is also the normative consideration of ensuring that full weight of given to the contributions that are presented for review. Although the broader public may not be aware of the working conditions within academia, it is important to note that, generally speaking, there are a number of regular evaluation-points that professors routinely must face, including: annual reviews, tenure and promotion reviews, grant proposals, conference presentations, articles and other publications, sabbaticals, teaching evaluations by students, some positions and committees, research chairs, etc.. My question seeks to understand—if there is already robust, intense, high-stakes, regular and relatively comprehensive evaluation of academic performance—is there (significant) added value to these five-year reviews? I am aware of some universities that have eliminated them, and others that have re-negotiated the requirements, but they do remain for the most part intact. Do they support and cultivate more enhanced engagement and performance? How? Would the time and resources required for this process be better spent in cultivating more enhanced engagement and performance?

Objective: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in preschoolers usually decreases
their academic performance and disrupts parent-child interactions. The present study aimed at
evaluating the effect of localized play therapy on preschoolers with ADHD.
Methods: The research method was quasi-experimental with a pretest-posttest design and
control group. Using a multi-stage random sampling method, and considering the inclusion
criteria, a total of 24 mothers of preschoolers with ADHD were selected and randomly divided
into experimental and control groups. The experimental group participated in 10 sessions of
localized play therapy (LPT) while the control group received no training. The instruments for
data collection were Vanderbilt ADHD diagnosis parents rating scale (VADPRS) and clinical
interviews. Data analysis was conducted using ANCOVA (analysis of covariance).
Results: The results showed that there was a statistically significant difference between the
performance of the experimental and control groups at posttest, and upon the follow-up
(P<0.05).
Conclusion: LPT has positive effects on clinical symptoms of ADHD in preschool children.
Hence, this method can be used to improve the mental health of children with ADHD and their
parents.

Los profesores deben ser capaces de convertir los errores en procesos de aprendizaje permitiendo el ensayo y error, lo cual debe estimular la creatividad y ser capaces de utilizar las herramientas que se tengan a mano.

Before getting into all the technical details, please consider whether it makes common sense. If you are looking at the influence of something like Facebook addiction on academic performance then you need some way of measuring performance, and performance should be your dependent variable. If you are only measuring this once then there is a serious potential problem with your research: you appear to be assuming that there is no relationship between Facebook addiction and prior ability, which I suspect is not the case. For a variety of social factors I would expect that smarter people are less addicted to Facebook and therefore appear to perform better.

Hello researchers,
I am conducting a factor analysis (FA). In this FA there are some items on student performance or achievement in relation to different subjects and skills. Each student has been assessed by their main teacher in relation to their skill level in Danish, math, natural sciences, music, reading etc. on a scale from 1 - 5 (from poor to great).
The reliability is high and there is a high degree of correlation between the items. However, when it comes to naming this factor, I am in doubt. I have named this factor 'academic achievement' initially but would it be more precise to call it 'academic performance' or something else?
Do you know any formal definition of academic achievement or academic performance in education research? What is the difference between the two?
Relevant answer
Answer
Academic achievement: the completion of studies and the acquisition of the corresponding degree.
Academic performance: passing and passing the subjects in the time foreseen for the studies.

Depending on the tests you use to evaluate and measure both variables and at the level (interval, ordinal, nominal ...) at which the scores of the results are obtained and expressed in them: this will allow us to know if statistical correlations can be made , and of what type, "chi square" tests, ANOVAs ... etc ...

I'm currently studying the relationship between students' readiness to E-learning and their academic performance.
The variables are:
Students' readiness: I intend to measure it through time-management skills, access to technology, and self-direction
Academic performance: students' grades in the previous semester
The research hypotheses are:
H0: students are not ready for E-learning
H1: there is a significant relationship between students' readiness to E-learning and their academic performance.
(the problem is that I have no idea on how to statistically test these hypotheses)
Relevant answer
There are several factors that affect the reception and welcome of e-learning, which is the subject of study, especially if it is mathematical and derivation, as well as if the material is new to students and to forget the power of the internet network and communication and possibilities available

The rating scale measure their own perspective of their academic performance. It was given pre and post-home visitation.
1 - not satisfied with performance
2 - neutral
3 - very satisfied
I'm working on knowing if there are significant effects on doing home visit service on their academic performance.
Relevant answer
Answer
Hello Jenny,
If the question is, do the preceptions of clients change as a result of the visit, then a method such as McNemar's test would appear to be appropriate. This approach compares instances in which the two responses differed for a participant from pre to post.
If the question is, are clients more satisfied post-visit than pre-visit, you could apply the WIlcoxon signed ranks-sum test (wherein each response is quantified 1, 2, or 3 as you outline in your query).
Good luck with your work.

For a job, especially at universities we designed a set of criteria. In this the most important one is about number of research papers (publications), impact factor and citation. Generally, a resesrer or a research group add coauthors and made an incompetent person eligible for a particular post. The person, later on destroy everything and a growing research institution/ university go down for a number of years. How we can safeguard our instruments from such things?
Relevant answer

It’s about teachers working with students with poor academic performance.

Dear Bujar. Very much take your point about the immense variability globally, and indeed with cohorts nationally.
And I agree with the desirability of understanding the level and nature of the teacher readiness.
But in identifying that readiness traditionally the propensity has been to measure the mechanical competencies on a scale identified by the 'ICT experts'.
We suggest the focus should in the first instance be on the teacher's shaping mindset, the thinking that shapes their use of the digital, and then on the traits and proficiencies the teachers bring to the workplace.
We contend that most teachers in their personal lives shape their everyday use of and learning with the digital with a digital mindset.
As too do the digitally connected young.
We/they expect to connect the moment desired, to use our suite of personal technologies as we want, learning what we want, how and when we want.
Would that be so with most of your teachers - and a sizeable proportion of your young ones?
However within the formal school setting - with schools globally still largely using the model of schooling standardised around 1920 in the Western world - teachers, school heads and education authorities still employ an analogue mindset.
Kind regards
Mal

Your question is a bit hard to answer straight up without more details on what kind of data you actually do have. Indeed, RevMan is generally only suitable for RCTs and used widely in the medical field but not outside.
I'd recommend to have a look at www.meta-essentials.com - a website and tool we created for meta-analysis in Excel of a wide variety of effect sizes. Other free tools are also available (e.g., R: metafor) and I don't see the need for any commercial software with expensive licences. First and Second years of 5 year medical degree programs usually involve studying basic sciences like anatomy, physiology and biochemistry and there are no clinical subjects or ward rotations.
It's just an observation that such monotonous routine, absence of possible interactions with patients and hence lack of feeling as a doctor leads to lack of motivation, interest and therefore academic performance of some of the students is also affected.
As soon as the same students enter clinical years, ward rotations become part of the learning process. Interaction with patients has been observed to lead a change in their attitudes towards academics.
It's proposed that clinical rotations to wards will help with motivation and better attitude towards career and studies in first and second year medical students.
Kindly share your insight regarding this.

Dear Sir/Madam,
I'm currently busy with my master dissertation on the performance of academic spin-offs. I have currently 179 companies in my dataset and I want to measure performance via ROE. However, 33 companies have negative equity which makes it impossible to calculate ROE. Just excluding them out of my dataset seems as a major mistake since those 33 companies aren't performing well. How should I solve this? Should I manually set the ROE of those 33 companies to a huge negative value (f.e. -200%) or how should I cope with this issue?
Thanks in advance!
Relevant answer

You create them as secondary variables from the primary data. For example, if you have collected say net profit and total asset values for each year, you can create ROA by dividing net profits/total assets and so on.

How to appraise a new alternative to the place of mainstream or a mainstream parallel?
Some practices in disciplines within academia and industry have long ago been proven logically, theoretically and philosophically inconsistent. It reached the level of practitioners and academics being labeled with suffering from cognitive dissonance without their knowledge of such suffering due to beliefs that as practitioners and academics their performance is satisfactory.
How can a paradigm shift in a discipline happen among individuals that suffer from cognitive dissonance especially when such individuals are not ready to accept such state despite that the reality proved it true.
Relevant answer
Answer
Paradigm shift will happen if someone provides evidence contrary to existing methods. It takes time and sometimes multiple evidences may be required. Let me give you an example from a scientific invention standpoint. In the 1970s and 1980s all of us used watches and clocks which had an hour hand and a minute hand and sometimes a second hand. The Swiss were pioneers in precision watch making. A Swiss scientist had invented a digital watch that showed the time using a 7-segment digital circuit display which did not have the hour hand or minute hand. He took his invention to the Swiss watchmakers who laughed and rejected outright this invention because to them a watch without hands is not a watch. The inventor took the invention to Casio (Japan) who embraced it and digital watches and clocks became popular and cheap. This was the paradigm shift and the Swiss forfeited the opportunity to make a revolution.

Dear all,
There are many schools that launch projects to reduce students' misconduct and unethical behaviours (plagiarism, cheating on examinations, bullying...) based on the new insights supplied by behavioral ethics.
However I was wondering whether there are evidences showing that promoting ethical conduct among students is beneficial for them during their scholarship. Basically, I am not aware of any paper showing that promoting an ethical culture (such as fighting against the above behaviours) enhances students' academic performance and their learning efficiency during their scholarship. So basically it might more beneficial to let students behave unethically to enhance their creativity and so their overall academic performance.
HERE IS MY QUESTION:
1) Do you know any study showing that promoting academic integrity among students has a beneficial/detrimental effect on students' academic outcomes and learning efficiency?
2) More broadly, do you know any reference examining the relationship between promoting ethics and students' academic performance or students' learning efficiency?
Thanks in advance
