Dear colleagues,
I recently encountered an issue on ResearchGate: one of my scientific publications disappeared due to a presumed bug, along with its statistics and access link. Naturally, I contacted ResearchGate’s support via the “Contact Us” form, providing all necessary details. However, weeks have passed, and I have yet to receive any response.
This raises a broader question: How responsive and effective is ResearchGate’s support in handling user queries? Given that researchers may face issues ranging from minor inconveniences to critical concerns (such as lost data, account problems or even plagiarism), one would expect timely assistance. Yet, my experience so far suggests otherwise (I hope, it is different in general).
I’d love to hear from you:
  • Have you ever reached out to ResearchGate support?
  • How quickly did they respond, and was the issue resolved in your or their opinion?
  • Do you feel the platform relies too much on its community to troubleshoot problems rather than offering direct support?
Let’s share our experiences—your insights could help us (at least me) understand whether this is an isolated case or a common challenge.
Looking forward to your thoughts!
Best regards, Tom J.

Hello
I have contacted them many times, A few cases, I did not receive any answers! but for the rest of the times that they answered, there was not a fix time table, a day to several days and more. Also all the time that I received an answer there was just a "Sam" in signature.
I don't know if it (Sam) is a first name, last name, nickname or anything else...
But all in all, were strong enough to encourage me to stay away from them as far as possible!

Think about willful academic blindness(ACADEMIC TUNNELING) vrs willful democratic blindness(POLITICAL TUNNELING)....
The first type/academic tunneling seems now normal, taking place at universities, thinktanks, international organizations, governments....which will lead to the death of science in a way that THOMAS KUHN was not expecting, BUT IT IS NOT BEING SEEN AS A THREAT TO THE SURVIVAL OF SCIENCE as it seems we are now in a non-science based world as science or not, they still will push what they want to push.....
The second type/political tunneling is SEEN as an existential threat to liberal democracy as political tunneling does not work under democratic rules just see the political dynamics under political tunneling processes under exism movements like Trumpism....
Hence, willful political tunneling with the support of alternative facts is seen as a serious threat to democracy from within, but willful academic tunneling with the support of alternative academic facts is not seen apparently as a serious threat to science from within, which makes you wonder, why.
And this raises the question, Why willful blindness is taken as a serious threat to the survival of democracy, but not the survival of science?
What do you think?
Note:
This is an academic question, not a political one.

As an academic working and pursuing a PhD degree in Egypt, both in private and public universities respectively, I wanted to put forward a simple question:
What is the role of universities, and other academic institutions, today? Was there ever a time where universities were agents of revolutionary action and change, or was it only a subject of the overall consumerist system?
We can take many steps back till the Ancient Egyptian times, where scribes and priests were taught writing, mathematics, and documentation of daily exchanges. All the way till today's era of digital globalization and mass education, where knowledge production process has become more of a virtual canvas rather than actual knowledge. Has knowledge ever served its purpose? Have academic institutions, and of course academic scholars, ever delivered the true purpose of education?
Was, and still, education's main sole purpose is economic prosperity of certain classes, hence socio-economic segregation?

Today's global societies are very competitive in so many ways; as a result, this trend has a ripple effect in global educational institutions as well. Specifically speaking, without an MA/MS degree, one cannot compete to get a decent job in the professional level job market. Thus, universities are driven to restructure their institutions to meet this demand

Hi, I would like to ask ResearchGate community PhD students, postdoctoral researchers/fellows and junior scholars about the Academic Teaching Development in their home/working countries. I know that completing a PhD and then postdoc does not always includes teaching experience or even more specialized education on academic teaching. Is having an accredited or institutionally recognized education on academic teaching a prerequisite for applying in academic jobs? What is the situation in working environments you are aware of?
And then the one million dollar question : Are there any suggestions of accredited/(inter)nationally recognized Academic Teaching Development Programmes/Courses for junior scholars, ideally free and online or distance learning?

The question "Does the current objective of internationalization in higher education focus more on academic or political factors?" seeks to explore the primary motivations and priorities behind the process of internationalizing higher education institutions. It aims to understand whether the emphasis lies on academic aspects, such as fostering global research collaborations, enhancing educational standards, and promoting knowledge exchange, or if political considerations, such as strengthening diplomatic relations, geopolitical influence, and soft power projection, play a more dominant role in shaping the internationalization goals. By examining the key factors driving this process, the question delves into the broader context of how higher education institutions engage with the global community and the potential implications of their internationalization strategies on academic pursuits and geopolitical dynamics.

I seem people list their Areas of Specialization (AOS) and Areas of Competence (AOC) on their academic CV's, but it is not clear to me how these categories are distinguished from each other. Is the AOC the general field in which you work and the AOS your specific interests within that general field? Or does the AOS represent your research interests and the AOC your teaching abilities? Or is it something else?
Thank you for your help!

Well, I do not not what to think of it, hence the question, except for the two ideas I listed in the original question. The version of AOS and AOC you listed are new to me, though I see how this would make sense and be a helpful thing. Its certainly makes more sense than the 2nd idea I listed in the original question! I'd love to hear from others, too, and see if there is a consensus!

How can researchers effectively tailor their writing style and language to different audiences, such as peers, policymakers, or the general public?
Relevant answer
Answer
The principles of clear writing are well established. My specific tips for research writing include
- Avoid acronyms unless they are well known (WHO, GP, AI).
- Use words that people can understand. So if you are measuring depression using the PSQ scale, name the scale in your methods section but subsequently refer to "depression scores" not "PSQ scores".
- Use simple sentence constructions.
- Put the main sentence first: Prior to enrolment, patients were interviewed by the first author. Should be Before they were enrolled, the first author interviewed the patients.
- Remember that your readers may not be familiar with the jargon of your speciality.
- Never use a big word when there is a small word. A wonderful technical editor once replaced "therefore" with "so" throughout a paper I had written. I had to agree that it was simpler and neater. (We then had a stimulating exchange of letters on style and punctuation.)
Above all, be curious when you read papers. Try to identify writing that is hard to follow and see if you can rephrase it better. And likewise, when you are reading a paper that is really making sense, see if you can identify features of the writing that are helping.

Greetings to my fellow members of the academic research community,
My academic journey as a PhD student has presented me with a significant challenge. I've long aspired to join a research laboratory where scientific activities are conducted with genuine enthusiasm and dedication. My passion lies in the pursuit of knowledge and engaging in intellectual discourse with fellow researchers who share my enthusiasm for scientific exploration. Regrettably, my attempts to establish connections with various research laboratories, universities, and distinguished professors have not yielded the anticipated results. Despite my unwavering commitment to highlighting the availability of financial support from my institution, the responses have been somewhat limited. I've observed that colleagues from different academic institutions readily establish connections with research laboratories and professors, although it appears that their intentions often lean towards short-term engagements rather than meaningful contributions to laboratory work and the broader scope of scientific research. These colleagues seem to effortlessly secure acceptance letters from these research laboratories, prompting the question: What factors contribute to this noticeable difference in response? I humbly seek your guidance in shedding light on the underlying reasons for this discrepancy. Additionally, I would greatly appreciate any insights, advice, or strategies you may offer to increase the likelihood of receiving acceptance letters that genuinely reflect an interest in my research pursuits and pave the way for long-term collaborative relationships. I thank you for your invaluable assistance and wisdom.

It is important to understand Twitter's users and its advertising base to answer this question. For an advertiser focused on Business-to-Business (B2B) or Business-to-Government (B2G), especially those focused in the tech industry, Twitter provided the marketing personas that we sought. Personas are the user type profiles sought, i.e., C-Level, Business decision maker, technical decision maker, and business influencer. and, Facebook and Instagram started as a great place to appeal to Business-to-Consumer (B2C) personas.
For Threads to capture Twitter's users and B2B/B2G personas, it must deliver a better experience and provide advertisers the confidence to jump to that platform to be successful. Threads' first steps have not been successful in doing so.

This topic has generated a lot discussion on the ethical implications of using language models like ChatGPT in academic settings. It drives us to consider potential biases, accuracy issues, and professionalism in academia while employing such technology. Furthermore, it encourages the investigation of alternate ways or complementary approaches that can improve academic success while resolving concerns about the incorporation of ChatGPT.
By considering the use of ChatGPT as a catalyst, and given the controversy surrounding their role, what are the potential benefits and drawbacks of introducing ChatGPT or similar language models into the academic product creation process? and does it assist the academic researcher in producing an efficient and engaging academic output, or does it cause the researcher to lose their ability to communicate ideas clearly and concisely and conveying arguments in a logical and convincing manner?

One significant direction of industry 4.0 is the mirroring of machines an processes in the digital world, also known as digital twins. There are many steps required in implementing this such as: 1. accurate sensors on the IIOT machines to provide input data for the digital twin, 2. IT infrastructure to transfer data, 3. accurate models/simulations that can accurately predict the machines behaviour. A cloud-based simulation tool can cover #2 and #3 at once, as there's no need for internal hardware and infrastructure to carry out the calculations. Working in the research field, you will be weighted by your h-index.
However, publications might not be cited by others despite your hard work.
Do you think we should publish only citable research or publish as many as we could to contribute the academic field?
Relevant answer
Answer
This question Tung Wah is old question. Hi index should be judged on scale of time, some like David L Morgan and Dean Whitehead suggest no citation is a waste of time. In this aspect like promotion etc it depends how the field |"like" you and if you have ``friends''. In fact, Michael W. Marek suggest that your promotion depends on this number. Yes, it is probably correct to a large extent. I would like to point what happen with time the real good ideas remain and rest is just a dust collection. For example Ohm (from Ohm law) was not cited. I believe there is no physics class today that does not mentioned Ohm law. I would agree that to have a paper that have such a breakthrough is not easy and more likely hard to judge. I believe such idea will even could encounter large resistance. For example, my advisor Eckert introduced dimensional analysis to heat and mass transfer. The critics suggest to burn his book. Even though he was part of the establishment as his advisor Schmidt was a prominent figure in the field. Let me brag a bit. I view my work more on the time scale, as my demonstration that the change of rotation location of ship render the whole work done until now in the field of ship stability as a waste of time. There is no citation on this point. I just notice that people coping my idea without citing it for example, Kostas J. Spyrou copy my stability dome after download my book. So there is effect but in time it will more pronounced.
In summary, in short terms it hi index is important, in the long time range it is not so important.

The students from the least developed country can not afford the expensive plagiarism checker tool. Further, its almost impossible to finance the paid version. Could you suggest/find the best plagiarism checker free software or webpage for student?.
Relevant answer
Dear respected colleagues,
Related to this valuable discussion thread of Prof. Nabaraj Gautam, please let me point to another critical issue related to plagiarism software-detectors.
My friend was accused of plagiarism. Why?
After about five months, his promotion process to associate professor was rejected because of plagiarism. When he checked the promotion report, he found that one of his papers was accused of plagiarism and with a 100% percentage. The reason is that his manuscript was checked by his co-author using one of these checkers. It took him several months time of following up to solve the problem and removing the manuscript from their database. After that long period, he re-applies the promotion order for the second time.
Therefore, plagiarism software may retain a copy of the manuscript in its database. To state the truth, this is depending upon the settings and type of account subscription.
So, you may face a similar situation when you submit your manuscript after plagiarism checking to a journal. It may be rejected instantly because it would show up 100% similarity index.
To solve the problem, it may take several months time of following up and removing the manuscript from their database.
If there were accusations of plagiarism, it is not well for your reputation, in any meaning.

Relevant answer
Dear Prof. Ferhan Kuyucak Sengur and all the respected RG colleagues,
This respected portal (i.e. RG) defines plagiarism as:
The term “plagiarism” has different meanings, but it usually includes copying somebody else’s work without permission.
On the other side, self-plagiarism is when the author republishes portions of his/her own previously written research work while authoring a new work.
I may be somewhat old-fashioned, but please have a look at the following golden principles on how to avoid plagiarism in academic writing, especially Self-Plagiarism:
  1. Never use the "Copy-Paste" trend: Use your own words instead of copying the words of others. Needless to say that if you are using your own words, then there is no chance of plagiarism accusing.
  2. Never repeat yourself: There are many re-published articles that are slightly or even considerably modified, and still not changed!
  3. If you have co-authors, just trust your words!
  4. If you use your own words, there should be no plagiarism issue. In turn, there is no need for the tools of plagiarism checking. Since there is no guarantee that the original content of your manuscript might not be copied and sold to others before it is published by you, I discourage using any free-software checkers for plagiarism; some of them are betrayers. Despite that offline ones are rare and if you are insisting to use anti-plagiarism software, offline checker programs are safer than online ones.
  5. In some cases, you can paraphrase the sentences in the original document. But don't forget to write a reference.
  6. You must always insist on honesty. Furthermore, you have to always remember that there should be a new added value.
  7. You must always insist on doing real research, not "Wikipedia" research.
  8. Do not put any of your research work anywhere until it is published and tagged with your name. Please wait until the paper is accepted and then published in that journal. Then, upload that research item on any platform you wish.
  9. Despite that offline ones are rare and if you are insisting to use anti-plagiarism software, offline checker programs are safer than online ones.
  10. In my opinion, most of the free-software-checkers for plagiarism don't work effectively. Unfortunately, you have to pay for the sake of getting good results.
  11. Try to develop your own style for the text writing.
  12. Try to read as much scientific literature as possible, especially in your own research field area.
  13. A reminder for all respected researchers: In order to maintain research integrity, plagiarism (الاستلال) has to be given up. However, many people do not know whether they are committing plagiarism intentionally or unintentionally.
Finally, believe me, or not: If you make one plagiarizing, you may solve one problem and fall into many others where some of which may be described as a knockout. Again and again, please always remember that if there were accusations of plagiarism, it is not well for any researcher's reputation, in any meaning.

My master’s thesis generally focused on the pre-enrolment factors influencing academic performance. I graduated but would like to understand further the possible inferential statistics I could have performed, whether relating to my research topic or not necessarily addressing my topic. Currently, I am exploring my questionnaire for possible statistical analysis. I recently realised how generous people are on RG in guiding those who need help, like in my case, and would like to tap into their expertise. I had slightly over 200 undergraduate students studying an entrepreneurship qualification and had missing values on some variables.
My questionnaire is structured in the following manner:
Section A (Demographics)
  • Level of study (five categories)
  • Gender (dichotomous – Male/Female)
  • Citizenship (dichotomous – Country A or Not-country A)
  • Age
Section B (Profile of students before being accepted at a university)
The section had nine dichotomous items (Yes/No)
  • Four items relate to admission entry requirements
  • One item relates to whether students completed their high school in rural or urban areas
  • Four items relate to career aspirations (what the student wanted to study and where)
The following sections C, D and E relate to the perceptions of the students (Strongly Disagree to Strongly Agree)
Section C (Issues experienced at high school level)
  • Six items made up of four-point Likert type question
All the items relate to issues that influenced student performance during their high school studies
Section D (Entrepreneurial attributes)
This section had ten items (4-point Likert type questions)
  • All tested the entrepreneurial attributes of the students
e.g. (i) I am confident in my abilities to succeed; (ii) I find it difficult to adapt to change
For the above two questions, a score of 4 confirms the skill for item, (i) while it confirms the lack of the item skill (ii). So, five items were asked following item (i) style while the other five followed the style on item (ii)
The aim of the above style of presenting statements was to ensure that participants read all the statements.
Section E (Student support and development)
This section had nine items (4-point Likert type questions)
  • Four of the items measures the uptake of the support rendered by the institution/department
  • Two items measure how the students have adapted to the curriculum offered in line with their career goals
  • Three items relate to the three teaching methods
I am using SPSS and SPSS Amos to analyse my data. I would appreciate some guidance on the applicable inferential statistical analysis.
Relevant answer
Answer
From what I can understand, descriptive statsitics should suffice for sections A and B.
For sections C-E, since you're already efficient in AMOS, you should definitely try for a full SEM( PCA, CFA, Path analysis)
If you perform PCA on sections C-E, followed by CFA you should/may get new components that further explores you're variables while simultaneously validating your questionnaire. Best regards

Hi everyone,
Some time ago I shared my scientific essay with GRIN. They offered me selling hard copy of this work via GRIN site or Amazon and pdf version to download from GRIN. I prepared pdf version of the paper and upload it, but I must admit there was inconsistency between final version active on site and pdf version that I have shared with them - problems with accurate formatting. Even if I selected for free option, little price was set up for downloading the pdf. Each one who wants to upload its own paper, has to agree with conditions, and one of them is that the paper will be active at least for 5 years under agreed conditions.
Still I have doubts if I did wrong or good sharing my essay with them. As a publisher was GRIN suitable choice indeed? What do you think? What experience do you have with this publisher?
Thanks in advance for your reply!

Dear Researchers, Scientists, Friends,
Academic incubators of innovation and entrepreneurship are developed at universities to support innovation and entrepreneurship of students. Incubators are also a supplement to the educational program in the field of activating the innovation and entrepreneurship of students. Incubators sometimes also perform functions or cooperate with a career office for students. Career offices collect employment offers and organize internships for students through cooperation with companies and institutions that employ or give practice to students.
Sometimes academic incubators of innovation and entrepreneurship also cooperate with various institutions and companies in which students find employment or take apprenticeships. In addition, academic incubators of innovation and entrepreneurship, cooperating with various institutions and companies, enable the establishment of clusters of innovation, in which various economic entities, public institutions, scientific institutes and universities cooperate with each other. In this way, the possibilities of entrepreneurship development and generation of innovative solutions in assumed and developed research projects and startups are increasing.
Sometimes, also with the innovation cluster or business incubator, financial institutions cooperate, primarily banks offering financial support in the form of preferential loans for developing innovative startups. However, at the early stage of the establishment of business activity by students and organizations, the most important role is provided by substantive support in the field of advising on the formal and legal issues and accounting service of the university, lecturers and employees of the academic entrepreneurship incubator.
Do you agree with my opinion on this matter?

What is the role of academic business incubators?

The peer review system exists to validate academic work, helps to improve the quality of published research, and increases networking possibilities within research communities. Despite criticisms, peer review is still the only widely accepted method for research validation and has continued successfully with relatively minor changes for some 350 years (Elsevier, 2021). Publication is necessary for sharing knowledge, but publication because you are in an academic race is wrong, it creates Journals and publication houses who thrive on the need.
You need to pull out academicians from this race, by providing ample time and resources for quality research, instead of counting number of publications for career advancement.

Dear friends.
I have been been involved in journalism for the majority of my adult life, both as a talk radio host, but later also despite my aversion as a child as someone who writes articles, mainly in the sphere of politics and business for different outlets. During my radio days it was almost a natural law that if you covered a political event you had a guest from academia. This is something that has changed.
Today political commentators who are non academics and also not very neutral ( CNN, Fox etc) has taken over the role of the political scientist as the expert in the field.
Academia had a natural place in society for centuries but as of lately political and societal forces has undermined the legitimacy and the authority of academia and science it self as an institution. Former president Donald Trump is often seen as the first "Post truth president", a truth with modification perhaps. In the political arena, far right parties has challenged the very role of science in society and replaced it with spinn. Facts and counter-facts are words many of us have gotten used to as well as alternative facts, reminding us of the scientific streams that claims that there is no objective truth.
Why do you think this is? what are the implications and how can academia make it self relevant again? ( If it is not). Perhaps academia is losing its position as an institution?
Best Wishes Henrik

For academics, this leaves a somewhat-muddied role in society and students' lives. As a student, an academic is not only a mentor but a guide through the various areas of our subjects of study, and this often means working with material typically seen as less pertinent to current society.

Only in this way can we take responsibility for the content that we are going to offer to the research community in general. The research work must also be attractive and interesting with clear intentions of being able to contribute to advancing the knowledge of the disciplinary Sector to which we are dedicated. It is also important that we not only conceive theoretical works that would only find a physical location in a library, but that they be "living" research works, circulating and interacting in multidisciplinary environments.

From my point of view, buying various academic titles is immoral from the moral and ethical side. In recent years, there have been many dubious "academies" (I know about 12 of them) that openly sell beautiful titles (academician, corresponding member, etc.). It should be noted that these so-called "academies" are all private offices that are practically not connected with official state academies. The price of all these titles is scanty and these titles are valued among the same "academicians". All these titles will not help the author in obtaining a publication in a prestigious journal (WoS), because conscientious reviewers do not pay attention to these nonsense. And you can publish in less prestigious magazines just for the money.

Peer assessment helps students to be more objective about their own learning and it can assist learning, it is argued. Its worth to student evaluation would perhaps be questionable too.
Relevant answer
Answer
Peer assessment has been shown to advance learning, for example, by improving one’s work, but the variance of learning benefits within or between studies has not been explained. The purpose of this case study was to examine what kinds of pathways students have through peer assessment and to study which factors affect them when peer assessment is implemented in the early stage of physics studies in the context of conducting and reporting inquiry. Data sources used include field notes, audio recordings of lessons, student lab reports, written peer feedback, and student interviews. We examined peer assessment from the perspective of individual students and found 3 profiles of peer assessment: (1) students that improved their lab report after peer assessment and expressed other benefits, (2) students that did not improve their lab report but expressed other benefits, and (3) students that did not experience any benefits. Three factors were found to explain these differences in students’ pathways: (1) students’ engagement in conducting and reporting inquiry, (2) the quality of received feedback, and (3) students’ understanding of formative assessment. Most students experienced some benefits of peer assessment, even if they did not put effort into their own work or receive constructive feedback. Nevertheless, in this case study, both improving one’s work and experiencing other benefits of peer assessment required sufficient accomplishment of all 3 factors.

Few notable comments from George Freidman of Stratfor about University Professors. These are found in his amazing book “Storm Before the Calm
— University professors have the World’s Highest-paid “part-time job”
— Teaching becomes increasingly easier over time, with little preparation needed
— For the graduate faculty, RA/TAs do all the hard work of grading and often tutoring
— An average professor writes research papers that have little to no real application. Most teaching faculty write papers for “appearance only”.
— Adjunct Faculties bridge the gap and increase productivity at a lower cost, with a little solid distinction between a tenured vs. adjunct faculty from the standpoint of the student
— This is not sustainable, and this will change in the next 10 years dramatically

I have observed that most highly rank academics in developing nations e.g Nigeria rarely display mentor- mentee relationship
Relevant answer
Mentor-Mentee relationships should not only be associated with Developing or Underdeveloped countries. There are weaknesses with mentoring in Developed countries which makes this a global societal challenge.
The real challenge in the development of this relationship can be placed on the quality of the broad frame work of each country's Educational policy. When I studied at Teacher's College mentoring never arose and throughout my primary and secondary education mentoring was unknown to me.
Mentoring in my view should not be associated with Developed, Developing or Underdeveloped worlds. Mentoring should be seen as being linked to the commitment of an instructor to ensure that the learner understands and feels appreciated. Mentoring is about a mentee's ability to look back on a learner and be able to identify the progress that learner has made and how fulfilled that learner is and knowing how much you have invested and supported his/her achievements.

This discussion aims at discovering issues regarding computer-aided composition of efficient research teams. What this discussion is not? It is not focused primarily on either organizations or management or leadership problems. The sole purpose can be expressed hence as recovering mechanisms of formation of efficient research teams in the academic context.
Usually, composition of human research teams considers expertise and knowledge of the team members. As humans, these members have their emotions and personality. In the globalized world, such research teams can be spread geographically all over the world. In summary, composition of research teams addresses, for example, psychological compatibility of the team members, their emotions, personality and culture.
Mathematically, formation of heterogeneous research teams which members complement each other can consider existing models, such as Piccard's HMMs for affective behavior or Big-Five personality model or Hofstede's cultural model.
This discussion addresses therefore the following questions. How can research teams be composed, for example, in regard to professional, emotional, personal, and cultural abilities of its members? What are the measures that assess team performance? How existing management techniques such as SCRUM can be adapted to requirements of teams performing research in the academic context?

I'm seeking a justification for the existence of academic philosophical work.
My question is about established 'insights': stable advances, which are largely exempted from any further controvery (about progress ...).
I'm thinking of insights significant not merely for academic philosophical debates themselves (because such justification of academic philosophical work would be circular), but of advances which are relevant or thrilling to those 'out there'.
POSSIBLE EXAMPLES: (a) The objective existence of moral facts was proven by ... in ...; (b) The nature/notion of 'justice' was properly displayed by ... in ...; (c) An explanation was given of how brains 'generate' mind by ... in ...
Just imagine someone claiming that academic philosophical work is actually quite futile, that during the past hundred years, for example, academic philosophical work delivered no discernible progress at all. Then, try to reject their doubts by giving three or four striking counter-examples.
Relevant answer
Answer
I'd say the following are established insights or stable advances emerging from academic philosophy within the past 100 years:
(1) Kripke's development of relational semantics, showing the way to formalize modal expressions, clarifying confusion over varieties of modality.
(2) Tarski's truth-theoretic semantics, and distinguishing meta and object languages in formal systems.
(3) Turing's groundbreaking work on computational complexity (often overlooked is that his "Can Machines Think?" from 1950 was published in the philosophy journal Mind)
(4) Insofar as you'd consider aspects of Chomsky's linguistic theory, such as innateness, as established, it's worth noting he defended his theory in several philosophical journals early in his career.
(5) Knowledge is not simply justified, true, belief.
(6) Linguistics, Psychology, etc. are scientific fields with agreed on methods for answering relevant questions in that domain.
This last one is, I think, the most powerful. Once a lot of progress is made quickly in an area of philosophy, it's often the case that progress results in the quick development of a new science. We shouldn't forget provenance.

Hello everyone,
I was wondering if anyone would be willing to share information/knowledge about research in higher education (HE) explicitly connecting: a faculty/academic development training program + participants’ (HE faculty members) learning + students’ learning.
To put it in another way. I am interested into knowing about research that combines the analysis of a faculty development program attending to: 1) how/what its participants learn and, especially, 2) how/what the students of those participants learn (thus, not their satisfaction).
On this regard, I am also particularly interested in faculty/academic development initiatives that go beyond single seminars, workshops, and courses of, for example, a couple of days. I am interested in initiatives that go beyond those (in terms of time and potential goals).
Thanks in advance for your interest and answers (if there is one). I will try to answer to all of you as much as I can.
In the meantime, more than ever, I wish you all to stay well and healthy.

Question

I've been looking at the economics undergraduate curriculum and have been thinking and wondering as to what specific skillset we want to equip undergraduate students with in the working world.
One can think about this by thinking about the ideal career outcomes of economics undergraduates. Most undergraduates with economics degrees should ideally end up in two occupations* (ideally meaning that their education will correspond to a desired occupation):
  1. Data Analyst (using exclusively data to identify actionable information)
  2. Business Analyst (using data and qualitative information regarding the economic environment relevant to a given business to identify actionable information).
With these two ideal career outcomes in mind its very clear as to why intermediate microeconomics, econometrics and market macro makes a difference. However as to why the Solow Growth model is taught on the undergraduate level is a bit confusing for me and Im left with any satisfactory answer. This is a relevant question because its a part of the core undergraduate macroeconomics education so its relevant for even those not intending to go to graduate school.
In terms of specific career outcomes (it could be that this list is lacking) why is studying the Solow model relevant for the undergraduate student who does not intend to go to graduate school?
Relevant answer
Answer
I support Andrea. It is necessary to teach Solow-Swan growth model, only because it is the most famous growth model. But if you only teach it and do not add comments on the problems that the model contains, we must say that you are intellectually dishonest.
It depends much how many hours your can spend on growth theory. If you have three hours., you can teach in the first hour the model, the claimed meaning (total factor productivity = technological development, etc.) and the arithmetic exercise to calculate total factor productivity.
In the second hour, you can tell your students that there are many objections on Solow's claim. One of most useful objections must be that of Hebert A. Simon 's paper (1979) "On Parsimonious Explanations of Production Relations" The Scandinavian Journal of Economics 81(4): 459-474. Simon thought his objection so important that he published this paper at the moment of his Nobel Prize reception. He claimed that the Cob-Douglas function only reflects accounting identity at the base of phenomena. For curious advanced students you can refer to a book by J. Felipe and J. S. L. McCombie (2013) The Aggregate Production Function and the Measurement of Technical Change, Edward Elgar.
If you have a third hour, Solow's Growth model is a good example that you can teach some econometric procedure can give apparently good but erroneous results if observers do not study the in-depth causal structure beneath the apparent phenomenon. This might be the most important lesson that you can teach your students who want to be data analysts or business analysts.

I want to study child trauma, with the end goal of not only working with traumatized kids but also teaching others how to respond to, recognize and 'handle' traumatized kids (e.g. cops, teachers, staffers at psych hospitals etc...). If that's the end goal, where should I start? What sort of literature is considered to be a staple in this field?
Relevant answer
Answer
Hi Frances,
The journals Child Maltreatment and Child Abuse & Neglect would be good to look at. You can go to their websites and just start to look at abstracts of their recent issues to get an idea of what is currently being published. The journal Trauma, Violence, & Abuse would also be great to look at. It is a review journal that has a high impact factor (very influential in the field) so everything published reviews the literature in the field and you can get ideas of specific articles to read from there. Though, it isn't specific to child trauma, you can get a sense from the titles if they are focused on children.
The National Child Traumatic Stress Network website would also be great. They have compiled a ton of resources and materials that are easy to digest, have fact sheets, and also host free webinars.
Finally, though you did not ask about it, since you are at Hamline, the University of Minnesota Institute of Child Development (where I received my PhD) has some very key faculty in the field who study child trauma, including my graduate advisor, Dante Cicchetti, and his colleague, Ann Masten. Abi Gewirtz and Canan Karatekin (my secondary advisor) would also be good to look at and you could even reach out to them to try to volunteer in their research labs during the summer/semester. Just go to the icd.umn.edu website and click on "People" to view their faculty profiles to learn more about what they do.
Hope this helps! Good luck.

Is it really necessary to teach unscientific knowledges of humanities to STEM students ? In Europe such as UK, Germany, France etc STEM students just learn their related STEM courses so that they can graduate in 3 years whereas in US 4 years. Since1 more year of tuition and living and starting 1 year late in job is a considerable loss of time and finance to students and their parents. These issues must be considered in favour of students who accumulate so much loan debts rather than US universities and relate academics.
Relevant answer
Answer
Sinan Ibaguner There are good reasons as to why universities in general should offer compulsory humanities courses. However, those reasons are based on the fact that humanities are sciences, and not unscientific knowledge. I would have thought that at this point the importance of ethics, for example, in the educational process offered in higher education was not an issue anymore, but let me try to explain: it's no good for employers (including STEM research centers), a highly skilled STEM graduate with no communication skills nor assertiveness, that can allow him to work effectively on teams of multidisciplinary professionals.
It's also no good for our global community to have STEM graduates who are highly skilled in their technical field of knowledge, if they have no idea how to base their moral judgments about their work, or anything they do.
That's why every higher education student should have well designed, serious compulsory humanities courses, not just STEM students.
Also, higher education is not a race, it's a personal process. No one is arriving 1 year later than anyone.
About school debt in US graduates, it is due to the incredibly high tuition fees their universities charge, not because they have to stay I year more than their European counterparts, I believe.

I shall tell you the story of an experienced scholar who was assigned the task of designing/establishing a new academic bachelor of science program in a 3rd world country in the 1990s.
He spent 3 years in gathering information from various universities who had similar programs after which he selected the most appropriate courses that will be included in the study plan. He numbered & gave each course a description in the native language & in English. His efforts were crowned when the ministry of higher education approved the program in the late 1990s after which the program was implemented & saved a department from downfall.
Just after commencing the new program, a new university administration was appointed with a dictator taking over the top position. This new management did not thank the scholar by words nor did it appreciate his efforts. In fact, he was subjected to incessant witch-hunt & harassment and that included deductions from his monthly salary plus deductions from his overtime work. Of course, he was not given extension after retirement but many other persons were given that.
There are, currently, places in some 3rd world countries in which "real" talent is fought by adversary elements who work hard to keep this nation down while their "false" propaganda claims that their institutions are at the top frontiers of knowledge. In reality, these institutions are expected to become kindergartens very soon.
