I am currently working on a study (for academic purposes) about measuring state curiosity in an emotion-inducing condition. However, we're having a hard time finding a perfect scale to measure their current curiosity. Can someone recommend us a state curiosity scale that we can use with a valid value and scoring and interpretation as well as it's license to administer if available or anything that can be a proof to show that we can use the scale for academic purpose.
Relevant answer
Answer
Thank you for your question. Initially, our study focused on curiosity as it manifests in humans, especially in emotionally driven contexts. However, as we reviewed related literature, we came across several animal studies showing how affective states—such as fear or anxiety—clearly influence exploration and avoidance behavior (e.g., in rodents, zebrafish, and sheep).
This has broadened our perspective. While our experimental design is human-centered, the mechanisms we are investigating—how emotional states modulate curiosity—appear to reflect a more fundamental drive that may well be shared across species. Your insight is both relevant and deeply appreciated.

I want to understand very well the dependent and independent variables from this research topic "Parental Factors as Determinants of Early Childhood Academic Achievement and Interest English Studies in Pre-primary Schools of North-West Nigeria for a better explanation
Relevant answer
Answer
Here, I think the independent variables are the parental factors, which include parental education level, involvement in their child’s education, attitudes towards education, socioeconomic status, and support for learning English. These factors are considered independent because they are believed to influence how children perform academically and their interest in English studies.
on the other hand, dependent variables, are the outcomes like the academic achievement of early childhood pupils and their interest in English studies. These outcomes depend on the influence of the independent variables. If i say for example, children with more involved parents or those with higher parental education levels might show better academic performance and greater enthusiasm for learning English. I think this framework can help us understand the relationship between parental factors and children's educational outcomes.

If after doing PhD, a research scholar has 4 to 5 papers published, and all are published in the same journal (SCIE), then what impact does it have on his future teaching, academic career, or post-doc?
Relevant answer
Answer
I think it is not a good idea to publish so many PhD thesis related research papers in one journal; it is better if the papers are published in different journals. If you decide to publish all papers in one journal, then you should select a high impact journal, and it is not easily possible. Top high impacts journals have very strict rules and high standards to select papers for publication. However, the importance of the research papers to fill the research gaps bring worth and appreciation.

A number of countries now recognize the importance of tests, assignments and projects administered by teachers during the course of the year in assessing a student's achievement. They have therefore introduced a Continuous Assessment Learning Area component which has to be passed in addition to accredited national or international board examinations. Weighting is however still tilted towards the latter because they are deemed more standardized and rigorous than the former. A concept and skills- oriented curriculum which incorporates continuous assessment is unlikely to produce a "Learn & pass exam & forget post-exam" syndrome.

I am writing to you today about the educational experiences that Researcher.Life curate for researchers. We are in the process of creating a holistic training course for researchers specifically in Europe and have put together a survey to understand the needs and requirements of researchers better.  The course is meant to be most helpful for early-to-mid career researchers to help with finding work-life balance, emotional and stress management, self-improvement, and enhanced productivity. It would be great if you could share your inputs and ask fellow researchers who are based in Europe, and who are in your network to fill out the survey, that will really help as well (to get their point of view). The survey should take no more than 3 minutes of your time.  Click here to take it https://lnkd.in/dRpVk9Ve Thank you in advance for making time for this.  On behalf of the Researcher.Life Ambassador Program

The credibility of a journal may be assessed by examining several key factors:
  1. Where is it indexed? Is the journal included or indexed in the major bibliographic databases for the field?
  2. What is its publishing history? How long has the journal been available? ...
  3. Is it peer-reviewed?
  4. What is its impact factor?

Hello Dr Sinan Ibaguner
I totally agree with your observation about journals. Unfortunately, I have witnessed this problem many times before... some journals seem to publish terrible articles and it seems that they only did so because of the author(s) or institution(s) - or both!
This is an interesting discussion:

It is not uncommon to move from one place to the other as fa as working institutions is concerned. This could occurs due to many factors. Someone worked for three years at MIT, and at Harvard University currently. His/her affiliation is Harvard University at present.
If he/she want to publish a research work done at previous work institution (MIT), which institution is used as affiliation for the researchers to be written in title page of the research work? The current or previous institution?

Working in the research field, you will be weighted by your h-index.
However, publications might not be cited by others despite your hard work.
Do you think we should publish only citable research or publish as many as we could to contribute the academic field?
Relevant answer
Answer
This question Tung Wah is old question. Hi index should be judged on scale of time, some like David L Morgan and Dean Whitehead suggest no citation is a waste of time. In this aspect like promotion etc it depends how the field |"like" you and if you have ``friends''. In fact, Michael W. Marek suggest that your promotion depends on this number. Yes, it is probably correct to a large extent. I would like to point what happen with time the real good ideas remain and rest is just a dust collection. For example Ohm (from Ohm law) was not cited. I believe there is no physics class today that does not mentioned Ohm law. I would agree that to have a paper that have such a breakthrough is not easy and more likely hard to judge. I believe such idea will even could encounter large resistance. For example, my advisor Eckert introduced dimensional analysis to heat and mass transfer. The critics suggest to burn his book. Even though he was part of the establishment as his advisor Schmidt was a prominent figure in the field. Let me brag a bit. I view my work more on the time scale, as my demonstration that the change of rotation location of ship render the whole work done until now in the field of ship stability as a waste of time. There is no citation on this point. I just notice that people coping my idea without citing it for example, Kostas J. Spyrou copy my stability dome after download my book. So there is effect but in time it will more pronounced.
In summary, in short terms it hi index is important, in the long time range it is not so important.

Dear Prof. Ferhan Kuyucak Sengur and all the respected RG colleagues,
This respected portal (i.e. RG) defines plagiarism as:
The term “plagiarism” has different meanings, but it usually includes copying somebody else’s work without permission.
On the other side, self-plagiarism is when the author republishes portions of his/her own previously written research work while authoring a new work.
I may be somewhat old-fashioned, but please have a look at the following golden principles on how to avoid plagiarism in academic writing, especially Self-Plagiarism:
  1. Never use the "Copy-Paste" trend: Use your own words instead of copying the words of others. Needless to say that if you are using your own words, then there is no chance of plagiarism accusing.
  2. Never repeat yourself: There are many re-published articles that are slightly or even considerably modified, and still not changed!
  3. If you have co-authors, just trust your words!
  4. If you use your own words, there should be no plagiarism issue. In turn, there is no need for the tools of plagiarism checking. Since there is no guarantee that the original content of your manuscript might not be copied and sold to others before it is published by you, I discourage using any free-software checkers for plagiarism; some of them are betrayers. Despite that offline ones are rare and if you are insisting to use anti-plagiarism software, offline checker programs are safer than online ones.
  5. In some cases, you can paraphrase the sentences in the original document. But don't forget to write a reference.
  6. You must always insist on honesty. Furthermore, you have to always remember that there should be a new added value.
  7. You must always insist on doing real research, not "Wikipedia" research.
  8. Do not put any of your research work anywhere until it is published and tagged with your name. Please wait until the paper is accepted and then published in that journal. Then, upload that research item on any platform you wish.
  9. Despite that offline ones are rare and if you are insisting to use anti-plagiarism software, offline checker programs are safer than online ones.
  10. In my opinion, most of the free-software-checkers for plagiarism don't work effectively. Unfortunately, you have to pay for the sake of getting good results.
  11. Try to develop your own style for the text writing.
  12. Try to read as much scientific literature as possible, especially in your own research field area.
  13. A reminder for all respected researchers: In order to maintain research integrity, plagiarism (الاستلال) has to be given up. However, many people do not know whether they are committing plagiarism intentionally or unintentionally.
Finally, believe me, or not: If you make one plagiarizing, you may solve one problem and fall into many others where some of which may be described as a knockout. Again and again, please always remember that if there were accusations of plagiarism, it is not well for any researcher's reputation, in any meaning.

Notwithstanding the "big journal syndrome", high impact journals are the most efficient way to communicate novel findings of a study to a bigger audience.
However, high rejection rates which are up to 80% deter most researchers from submitting their work to these journals. Most manuscripts are rejected outrightly at the desktop because the title reflects a lack of novelty or simply is not aligned to the scope of the journal. Some journal insist on consistent formatting, etc
Publishing in a high impact journal can be a meticulous life trouncing process for upcoming researchers. It is most rewarding when the researcher is invited to share the findings in research conferences, because of being regarded as an expert in this field.
What are strategies that can help upcoming researchers to publish their work in high impact journals?
Relevant answer
Answer
Of course you should have a well written article, in line with the journal's general requirements etc., and it should be relevant for the scientific field (e.g., novel) that seems to be quite the obvious start.
But, in my experience, part of it is also luck, and whose desk your paper lands on. If the editor doesn't have interest in the topic, they might reject it more easily. If it does go out for review, it depends on the editor what amount of corrections they are willing to allow (I have had quite positive reviews still lead to a rejection), which will be less in highly sought after journals. In that case you can still use those reviews and move on to the next. I've also had a manuscript rejected by a high-impact journal, to after be accepted by an even higher impact one. In the end, I would always suggest submitting to the journal that fits your topic best, and see impact more as a way of deciding with what journal to start. I have personally never been deterred from trying, despite the fact that it might take a little more effort. And although it can feel like a waste of time when you get rejected, at least you tried.
More than that, if you get a desk rejection, the advantage is that you can move on quickly, and if you get reviews, but still rejected, you can improve your manuscript before the next submission.
Also, more journals are dropping formatting requirements for initial submissions, because they realize the time it takes, and their own high desk-rejection means it might not be worth it (I'm in favor of this approach).

Our research world has become dependant on research output.
Many academic jobs depend on a certain sustained level of research.
Is this unhealthy?
Does it stunt creativity? Does it create pointless research? Does it lead to plagiarism?
Should we have different outcome measures eg a Research Quality Score per article, rather than number of articles?

Publication is necessary for sharing knowledge, but publication because you are in an academic race is wrong, it creates Journals and publication houses who thrive on the need.
You need to pull out academicians from this race, by providing ample time and resources for quality research, instead of counting number of publications for career advancement.

Dear all,
Singapore is leading the list of nations scoring outstandingly in the PISA and TIMSS tests globally. Ask a Singaporean student - does he play sport or does he enjoy his school-tuition-homework life? Is he really enjoying his children years? Would be interesting to have some answers from them here....
My actual question was .....do you think PISA is just measuring the academic ability of a student? Dont you think we need to measure some other things as well to be clear on which students will probably be living better lives and also be involved in bettering lives around them? We do not just need academically strong pupils but ones who can lead us in shaping our future.
PISA tests are a good way to know where we stand academically in comparison to the rest of the world, that i agree but who is measuring the cost at which the students are able to perform better?
What do you think?
Relevant answer
Answer
Dear Professor Siddiqui: All the qualities you list above are, in fact, labour-power attributes. That is, skills, capacities, mental and physical capabilities (including work and social attitudes) pertinent to performance in capitalist labour processes. 'Education produces labour-power', as Marx noted in 'Theories of Surplus Value - Part 1' (1863). This is more relevant today than when Marx said it, as education systems have developed more decisively as producers of labour-power over the last 150 years. The PISA tests do not measure "labour quality" but the quality of potential labour-power - which is different.

From my point of view, buying various academic titles is immoral from the moral and ethical side. In recent years, there have been many dubious "academies" (I know about 12 of them) that openly sell beautiful titles (academician, corresponding member, etc.). It should be noted that these so-called "academies" are all private offices that are practically not connected with official state academies. The price of all these titles is scanty and these titles are valued among the same "academicians". All these titles will not help the author in obtaining a publication in a prestigious journal (WoS), because conscientious reviewers do not pay attention to these nonsense. And you can publish in less prestigious magazines just for the money.

For the past few years I have been in doubt and a question about the nature of research always occupies a part of my mind.
As researchers, we have been asking and researching for years. We may become famous in our own field and eventually be remembered as an influential scientist. But the question is what is the final outcome of the research-based lifestyle for the researcher?
In other words, what is valuable in research that motivates a scientist to do research all or most of his/her life?

Hello researchers,
I am conducting a factor analysis (FA). In this FA there are some items on student performance or achievement in relation to different subjects and skills. Each student has been assessed by their main teacher in relation to their skill level in Danish, math, natural sciences, music, reading etc. on a scale from 1 - 5 (from poor to great).
The reliability is high and there is a high degree of correlation between the items. However, when it comes to naming this factor, I am in doubt. I have named this factor 'academic achievement' initially but would it be more precise to call it 'academic performance' or something else?
Do you know any formal definition of academic achievement or academic performance in education research? What is the difference between the two?
Relevant answer
Academic achievement: the completion of studies and the acquisition of the corresponding degree.
Academic performance: passing and passing the subjects in the time foreseen for the studies.

I am not sure if any one study on this topic. It has been observed in certain cases that success-full researchers have poor academic record. These are exceptions, I am interested to know any study on this topic. Please also cite examples that shows negative or positive examples. Ideally there should be high positive correlation, if it is not than why?
I mean if person got good grade/marks or rank at school/university level will be a grate scientist. For example if topper of JEE (top exam in India for getting admission in engineering college) join research, he/she will be best scientist in the world.

From my long experience of teaching, the researchers who have rich researching CV usually have poor teaching records and vice versa. That is especially true for the universities that haven't a sufficient researching budget. The reason behind that is that researching needs more time at the expense of teaching.

Is it possible to remove ones name from search engines such as SCUPUS and WEBB of Science and the on line version of the article after an article is published? So second author becomes first etc. Is it possible and in that case how to proceed? Is it possible to also remove your own name and leave the names of the co-authors on RG? Best wishes Henrik
Relevant answer
Answer
Every journal has guideline for Authors, it should have the procedure to remove one's name from authorship, however when they ask reason of removal that may cause serious problem to others, especially the corresponding author. There may arise issues such as conflict of interest and even there is a possibility of the research paper been rejected/ removed from the journal. Yes, conversely if the co-author interested to remove name from authorship and the corresponding author jointly are able to convince the Editor in Chief of the journal then it might work.

Dear friends
I hope you had a nice summer. I sometimes get the comment that academia is not relevant from business colleagues and clients in my consultancy business. For me academia has always been something I have been careful not to associate my self too much with, even if I love to teach. My question is that if there is a way to bridge this gap or conflict between academics and practitioners? I often hear highly negative and degrading comments aimed towards academia from business leaders, some of which have themselves masters or Phd.
I think in the long run this is bad because it reduces the opportunities for academics and makes the transition between one field to another more difficult. I can my self admit to having a bias, meaning I would think twice before employing someone who has been in academia for an extended period of time.I realise this is something I need to work on, prejudice and generalisation is never good!. I think there are a lot of competent people in academia but in many ways academia has become a world of its own with little or no connection to the real world, making it more difficult to move from academia to for example a managerial role or consultancy, what works in theory doesn't always work in practice. Do you have any experiences from the vantage point of an academic? My experience is mainly from the other side, that of a business owner but it would be interesting to also hear the other side. Do you have any experiences? How can this gap between academia and "the world" be bridged or should it?How can we change the view of private businesses that academia is somehow a different world inhabited by some very odd creatures?
Also note that there is no intent of disrespect or hostility on my behalf towards academia or academics. I might have deep rooted issues with the current state of academia but many of my friends are academics. .
I wish you all a wonderful day

Most likely, I will actually have my degree by the time the manuscript is in front of a reviewer, and definitely by the time it's published. Is it permissible for me to include my MBA in the author's section since I will have it before publication, or am I required to leave it off because I do not officially have the degree at the time of submission?

I'm seeking a justification for the existence of academic philosophical work.
My question is about established 'insights': stable advances, which are largely exempted from any further controvery (about progress ...).
I'm thinking of insights significant not merely for academic philosophical debates themselves (because such justification of academic philosophical work would be circular), but of advances which are relevant or thrilling to those 'out there'.
POSSIBLE EXAMPLES: (a) The objective existence of moral facts was proven by ... in ...; (b) The nature/notion of 'justice' was properly displayed by ... in ...; (c) An explanation was given of how brains 'generate' mind by ... in ...
Just imagine someone claiming that academic philosophical work is actually quite futile, that during the past hundred years, for example, academic philosophical work delivered no discernible progress at all. Then, try to reject their doubts by giving three or four striking counter-examples.
Relevant answer
Answer
I'd say the following are established insights or stable advances emerging from academic philosophy within the past 100 years:
(1) Kripke's development of relational semantics, showing the way to formalize modal expressions, clarifying confusion over varieties of modality.
(2) Tarski's truth-theoretic semantics, and distinguishing meta and object languages in formal systems.
(3) Turing's groundbreaking work on computational complexity (often overlooked is that his "Can Machines Think?" from 1950 was published in the philosophy journal Mind)
(4) Insofar as you'd consider aspects of Chomsky's linguistic theory, such as innateness, as established, it's worth noting he defended his theory in several philosophical journals early in his career.
(5) Knowledge is not simply justified, true, belief.
(6) Linguistics, Psychology, etc. are scientific fields with agreed on methods for answering relevant questions in that domain.
This last one is, I think, the most powerful. Once a lot of progress is made quickly in an area of philosophy, it's often the case that progress results in the quick development of a new science. We shouldn't forget provenance.

The Mercator Institute for Literacy and Language Education at the University of Cologne, Germany, is conducting a systematic review on the effectiveness of language integrated strategies (e.g. scaffolding, Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP)) in classrooms. In this review, it is intended to collate, critically appraise and synthesize existing research evidence according to pre-defined criteria.
To complement our electronic database search, we are looking for manuscripts/working papers/project reports/dissertations (except for BA-/MA-thesis) that have not (yet) been published or submitted for publication (and are not (yet) indexed in databases).
We are interested in (quasi-)experimental and observational studies using a control group design that (statistically) examine
  • the effectiveness of concepts of instruction that integrate language support and subject teaching
  • for children of primary or secondary school age.
If you have carried out this type of study or if first results of an ongoing study are available, we would like to kindly request the document. Submitted studies will be reviewed by the project team; studies that match the review inclusion criteria will be included in the final review synthesis (i.e. summarized and discussed). Publication of the results is planned for 2021.
Of course, your submissions will only be used within the scope of the review and will not be passed to third parties.

Do you know any articles in which the relationship between student well-being and academic achievement is analyzed thoroughly? Unfortunately, this is not the case for Libyan graduates. Although they and the teaching staff are well aware of the dissertation requirements, no serious tangible plans are made to guide the students into preparing for their piece of research. When I taught Research Methods to graduate students, however, I made it a requirement that students complete a research proposal as part of their final assessment. That worked because it was a required criteria to pass the subject.
The case, however, is different with teaching staff, most of whom are unwilling to engage in research work, despite the fact that published research output is the only means of academic promotion.

Generally, academic career starts with great hopes and expectations. First decade receiving a doctorate degree, new lecture experiences provide a high level of motivation. But sometimes managers can force you to work with a lot of workload. Academic steps are difficult. The lucky ones gain experience abroad and develop their renewed self. Some become unable to handle the workload and their motivation falls. As soon as some of them have less academic work, they lose interest in academia. They find other efforts to give up academic progress. After 15 years, competence increases. The main motivations of the academician who have good relations with the students are their students. But after 15 years fatigue, some things lose meaning lowers motivation. Excessive effort in intensive work such as symposium, preparing the whole faculty lesson plan and accreditation can create discomfort. Often academics are optimistic. But the use of most of the efforts of their superiors can reduce motivation. At the end of 20 years, the motivation can still be maintained by being honored in a certain field. How do you think it is possible not to lose motivation for years due to these thoughts?

Thank You very much for your responses and it will be a great help in my current undertaking. Please enlighten me to this. Thank You.

Hi Aguilar
1. Correlation is used to test relationships between quantitative variables or categorical variables. In other words, it’s a measure of how things are related. The study of how variables are correlated is called correlation analysis.
2. The first random variable in your question is academic achievement (performance scores) of the students , but what is the second random variables?
3. If the sample size of your random variables >30 you can use Pearson Correlation.
4. If the sample size of your random variables <30 you can use only the Spearman rank correlation:
Spearman rank correlation is a non-parametric test that is used to measure the degree of association between two variables.  The Spearman rank correlation test does not carry any assumptions about the distribution of the data and is the appropriate correlation analysis when the variables are measured on a scale that is at least ordinal.

Evaluating academic faculty for promotions often include assessing their teaching abilities. Is it sensible to base these on Student Course Evaluations?
Geoffrey Alderman wrote in the Gaurdian that a reason for the decline in academic standards has been the 'increasing and increasingly stupid use of students' course evaluations as pivotal factors in the academic promotion process.'
Does anyone have a deeper insight on how the use of such student evaluations have impacted faculty at their own institutes? Have they led to dumbing down?
How much confidence would you have in the teaching ability of the applicant if the evidence was exclusively based on Student Course Evaluations?
Relevant answer
Answer
I agree with so many of the comments, if they are to be used, they must be just one element in the evaluation process. If they are administered and collected, they must have a purpose. They should be a resource to potentially identify problems within the instructional setting, but not as confirmation of a problem. Validation only after a deeper examination into a possible issue.

Dear Yaz,
I think this is a very pertinent question in the context of today’s academia.
In my personal experience I would say that biases or different sorts (especially race/ethnicity and gender, in my case as a Mexican academic living and working in Australia) do play a role in the way academic peers perceive the relevance of your work or the potency of your intelkectual argument.
That said, I would also say this discriminatory biases and racist attitudes are also contingent on the theme/conference organization/host institution/country as different academic centers possess different academic cultures which affect the ways in which scholars interact among themselves. This also impacts the approach towards diversity of different sorts, beyond the merely discursive level.
I hope this sheds light on biases at academic conferences.
Kind regards,

I am interested in the ways in which academics overcome imposter syndrome while at the same time trying to instil a sense of confidence in students.
I am therefore interested in hearing about:
- The lived experience imposter syndrome in your working life
- How this feeling is negotiated and overcome (or not)
- What are the possible impacts of experiencing imposter syndrome on your students?
- Possible reasons why you suffer from imposter syndrome - e.g. first in family to be an academic, prior experience, intersectionality?
- Advice for other academics who feel the same way.
Many thanks!

Answer
Imposter syndrome is something that can hold you to explore your real potential. Sometimes it makes you doubt yourself on things that you actually good at. I had this syndrome before and maybe still having it, though I'm trying to fix it up. I always doubting myself every time i want to make a big decision such as registering in a paper conference or MUN, afraid that I'm not capable enough to do it. When i told my friends about this, they support me reminded me that I'm capable. So i tried and do my best. I ignore my thoughts that sometimes say I'm not good enough. I also realized that sometimes people doesn't really know what their doing and they do it anyway, because then they have experience that can help them grow. The thing that I'm afraid of the most is that I'm saying something wrong and it annoy people. But, trough many experience, i learned that it's okay to be wrong as long as we learn from it.
Possible reasons, maybe because everyone expect high on me. I graduated from famous high school in my place and now a student in a famous university. So people look up for me and I don't. People also blame me so much like "You graduated from that famous high school but you can't answer this question?" So it grows on me, that i always have to be the person that everyone expect to be. And now i realize when you achieve something, it doesn't mean you capable of anything else.
So, i think people should try to explore them self, to really know their interests and capabilities. Because, sometimes we take others advises so much that it drives us to be someone we don't. And then we become afraid of taking steps if people doesn't recommend or agree with it. Then we full of doubtness and afraid of being a fraud when we really not being.

The stat advised me to use chi square instead of pearson R?
Relevant answer
Answer
I agree completely with Avishag.  If both of your variables are categorical, then a chi-square would be more appropriate.  However, both personality and academic achievement are more typically measured as continuous variables, so it’s unclear if chi-square would be best for you.  What are your variables and are they categorical?  Vasulu also makes a good point about another difference between correlation and chi-square.  If your variables are continuous but don’t meet the assumptions of a parametric test, you would probably want to conduct a Spearman rank-order correlation.  Best wishes with your project, Maria! ~ Kevin

I have been using Publons to keep my review(er) records for more than 2 years. Now I would like to use their verified record as part of my CV. Has anyone done that? any tips about how to do it?
Thanks,

Answer
Dear Avishag,
Currently, reviewers recognition systems are constructed by major publishers, such as elsevier, and IEEE and IET. With publons, all the review services are well recorded in one place for each reviewer. Therefore, these services may be added in a CV along with official evidences.

1st constant data point- Oral language proficiency measure.  All subjects will be categorized into 4 levels of proficiency.
Using this data point, I'm trying to discern if oral language proficiency is a determinant factor in the ability to make growth as measured by standard score on the Woodcock Johnson Tests of Academic Achievement III and IV over a 3 year period in special ed.
2nd point then is the Broad Reading standard score measured at the initial evaluation versus the Broad Reading standard score earned 3 years later while in special education.

Do you know studies that there is no correlation between self-regulation components and academic achievement in university students?
Relevant answer
Answer
Dear Marilena,
You may encounter some challenges with investigating this.  Negative findings are often not published (although a paper in which some findings are positive may be able to include negative findings).  For this reason, good meta-analyses address the "file drawer" problem (i.e. that a frustrated researcher has given up on publishing a negative study) by calculating how many unpublished papers would need to exist in order to invalidate the obtained results.
You may also find the Journal of Negative Results of some interest: http://www.jnr-eeb.org/index.php/jnr

My study is specifically on Online learning courses where most of the students are employees. Hence I am interested to measure the impact of engagement from the perspective of their carrier growth. Can u suggest any article to explore further?

The constructivist theory supports the fact that students must be engaged with learning and this will positively impact retention and achievement.
"what conditions contribute to student
success.'** Conditions include high standards for academic
learning and conduct, meaningful and engaging pedagogy
and curriculum, professional learning communities among
staff, and personalized learning environments. Schools
providing such supports are more likely to have students

Summative assessment takes place after learning has been completed
and provides information and feedback that sums up the teaching and
learning process. Typically, no more formal learning takes place at
this stage, other than incidental learning from feedback and results.
If a student fails a summative assessment, they are usually granted an opportunity to re-take the assessment. They are also often awarded a capped grade - i.e. they cannot be awarded a mark above a predetermined level, and this will therefore influence the overall grading of their degree.
If the student passes an assignment first time - is it right to then allow them a chance to get a better grade (i.e. resubmit), if there is no complaint about the original award?
Relevant answer
Answer
HE in Bhutan also does not allow a student to improve summative grade for various reasons which among others include faculty time and resources. In case of assignment, we do ask students to re-do if they fail to get the pass mark. But as mentioned by Jillian above, no matter how well a student does in the re-assessment- he/she will be awarded only the pass mark.

I have been conducting a longitudinal study examining the association between aerobic fitness, weight status, and academic achievement. Recently the standardized testing measure, used to assess academic achievement among youth, was changed due to a switch in government contract. Is there any way to continue longitudinal analysis with this switch in the measurement tool for the outcome variable of academic achievement?
Relevant answer
Answer
Hi,
According to what you mentioned there is unexpected change in policy, this is not a justification to change your proposed study design. The longitudinal design which I assume you already started data collection accordingly will entail the presence of consistency in your measurement over time.
However, if you still did not start data collection, you may go back to your funding agent or IRB committee to seek their permission to change your measures based on the new circumstances.

It would be useful to look at the research by my colleagues Kath Woolf and Chris McManus from UCL exploring the concept of social networks and social capital on academic achievement. They have mainly looked at medical students but have some very interesting results with more in the pipeline about how social networks and subsequent social activities may relate to academic achievement. See also PhD by Suzanne Vaughan - I think she recently published something in Medical Education.

If we teach the regular students these secrets shell this possibly  increase  their academic achievement? I'm planning to build a educational program to rise the academic achievement of high school students any suggestions?
Relevant answer
Answer
From your opinions, what is the secrets of intelligent students high performance?
For "intelligent students" - firstly as the phrase indicated, they are smart.  Secondly, some intelligent students are extremely diligent / disciplined in pursuing their studies.  Moreover, some of them also are very passionate and have the perseverance in completing their studies even though with difficult requirements / expectations.
If we teach the regular students these secrets shall this possibly increase their academic achievement?
Intelligence usually is given but also can be acquired through experience - what regular students can do is to exhibit diligence, be disciplined, passionate & have perseverance in pursuing their student's performance.
I'm planning to build a educational program to rise the academic achievement of high school students any suggestions?
For both intelligent & regular students - teach them how to study diligently & be disciplined, provide conducive study environment to promote their passion & perseverance.  If smart & regular students do not practice abovementioned virtues, they may not get the high performance.  On the contrary, If smart & regular students also pursue the above virtues, this can contribute to their successful performance.

It is a big NO. It does not solely depend on the students. Students now a days don't want to go an extra mile at all and want to be always spoon-fed.
In as much as the school has a role to play, the students have a big responsibility of learning and delivering what is expected of them in order to succeed., and this is how the gap can be bridged.
Further, success is not limited to a specific class of people but to those who strive for it. Students must strive and think outside the box and this is the only way the achievement gap can be bridged.
Laziness is killing today's students and this can lead to no or poor achievement on their part.
The School on the other hand would have to provide Quality Education.

An interesting opinion piece has just been published in the journal Science arguing that we should retire the letter of reference.
From reading the piece I'm astonished by the amount of reference letters being written within the American academic system.
I'm a member of the committee of academic hiring at the Faculty of Natural Sciences at the University of Gothenburg, Sweden and we never request letters of recommendation, simply because we feel they give us very limited, unbiased information.
What are your views?

Performance of university is confused with accreditation or rating . is there a method to evaluate the performance of a university.
Relevant answer
Answer
I cannot give you a reference, but I think the current consensus is that there is not a uniform way to do this as positions and tasks vary. The part of the evaluation that is based on performance parameters generally should include several bibliometric indicators such as number of papers, number of citations and H-index.

My colleague is working on research about factors that affect academic achievement among High School students. The result surprisingly shows that Self Efficacy has negative effect toward academic achievement and not significant, which is different from most research I have read. How does it come?
Relevant answer
Answer
Self efficacy means that students are confident about their ability.  Students may become to confident that they think they no longer have anything to learn...or at least that their current teacher cannot teach them anything.  Such students would likely not study as hard and thus have poorer academic achievement.
