Hi,
I am wondering if anybody can help me. Upon trying to run a qpcr plate on the applied biosystems StepOne PCR machine, I get an error message saying 'run aborted, unable to move block within specified timeout'
The block is able to rise but then the message appears straight after
I have done the usual; rebooting the machine, resetting the computer and I am still faced with the same error issue. I am hoping there is a solution that will not involve a maintenance callout.
Has anybody else experienced this?
Thanks so much

Hello to everyone, I'm new in modeling with apdl, I am trying to model a shelving with shell181. I introduced the geometry with salient keypoint, and after the mesh I tried to create an interlocking constraint. I define 6 costraints (ux,uy,uz,rotx, roty, rotz) but when I run the code, the program abort because there are too much errors deriving from constraints. In particular file.err says as :
" Constraint UZ on keypoint 13 is not transferred to unselected node 7."
for each selected keypoint for all the 6 costraints.
I do not understand why and what can I do to delete this errors

I simulated a pile embedded in sand soil. The pile was subjected to lateral and vertical forces. The model was aborted. I have printed the "Job Diagnostic" to present the causes of the aborted model. The problem occurred because of the nodes at the contact surfaces between the soil and pile. Some nodes were overclosure, and others separated, as presented in the figure below. How can I solve this problem?
Relevant answer
Answer
Good afternoon! If the model solution stops, it is desirable to check the boundary conditions, it is also possible to increase the size of the computational grid. The pile is usually monolithic and the moment of inertia is evenly distributed.

At interaction I am using Tie connection for loading and support assembly. The model Analysis completed successfully for 1 MPa or Less than 1 Mpa but when i increase the load it gives me error. The analysis started but after some increment it aborted.
As like when i used the surface to surface (Interaction) contact for loaded plated and steel roller at support then it gives me an error " Displacement increment is too big" and analysis aborted.

First I just established a cube with dimensions of 1×1×1 mm3 and discretized it into 125 elements. Then, the cube was implemented by periodic boundary conditions and subjected to uniaxial tension. ABAQUS explicit was used owing its good convergence. This model seems to be simple and can be analyzed effectively. However, the submitted job was aborted due to error(s), which as follows:
Error in job Job-2: The elements contained in element set ErrElemExcessDistortion-Step1 have distorted excessively.
Error in job Job-2: There are a total of 4 excessively distorted elements
Error in job Job-2: The ratio of deformation speed to wave speed exceeds 1.0000 in at least one element. This usually indicates an error with the model definition. Additional diagnostic information may be found in the message file.
I am confused and try to solve, but the situation does not improve. Could someone help with it? Thanks a lot.
Relevant answer
Answer
Distortion issue is related to inconsistency with the unit properties used in Abaqus or due to the inappropriate mesh size you can try with different meshing and also check the minimizing distortion is turned on in the mesh module.

Hi all, I am new to Abaqus and I am recently modelling for a tilt prop that is subjected to gravitational load and axial force, the prop is telescopic and has external and internal tubes, the tubes are connected with a pin inserted to the holes and the analysis is a dynamic implicit analysis. The job aborted halfway through the analysis and yields this error: Time increment required is less than the minimum specified. Can anyone help me with this? I have attached the file below such that you can better understand my situation.
Thanks in advance.
Relevant answer
Answer
Hi Wang
The error indicates your solution is not converging. For convergences, the Abaqus is checking again and again by reducing the time increament, in this way it is continuously decreasing and eventually reaches the minimum specified time increment but then also the solution is not converging.
First, you can check by reducing further the minimum specified time increment, if it works then good. If it doesn't check your message file and look for the warnings, again look at your model definition, loads applied, etc.
I am attaching a pic for the same.

I think this problem is highly relevant to RAM memory of the nodes.
I got a similar situation here. When I was running a single-element patch test job for my VUMAT, everything behaved normally. Then, I tried to run a job with a few hundred elements with 1 node having 6 cores (4000 mb memory for each core), a similar problem appeared. For me the error message was:
srun: error: Unable to create step for job 17672730: Requested node configuration is not available
I found one possible issue contributing to this error, which was in my characteristic length definition card
*CHARACTERISTIC LENGTH, DEFINITION=USER
I didn't specify how many components the characteristic length array had. After supplementing such information
*CHARACTERISTIC LENGTH, DEFINITION=USER, COMPONENTS=3
the job could run.
Finally, I tried to run a large job with ~.5 million elements, taking 4 nodes x 36 cores x 4000 mb/core, the job could also run.
I guess the previous lack of definition of COMPONENTS might lead to some memory allocation issues which would lead to some memory-related problems.

I am running analysis of a cross-shaped sample that is prescribed a displacement along x and y-axes. I have run several jobs with this model and had no issues. However, the current set of conditions I am trying requires multiple steps while previous ones have all been one step. I want to apply a displacement along both axes, then remove the condition on one axis, allowing it to unload while increasing the displacement in the other axis. I tried deactivating y-displacement while modifying x in step 2 but every time I try to run, it aborts as soon as it tries to begin step 2. I have tried several variations including having a step for unloading where the only change is deactivating displacement and it still aborts at the start if this step.

This problem can't be solved with Nvidia driver replacement (as described in Schrodinger KB).
Who have some problem and probably who knows how to fix this bug.
Relevant answer
Answer
Situation described in Schrodinger KB is not actual for me. This case is not linked with Nvidia drivers.
I have tried following steps:
  • Changed size of simulated molecular system (buffer zone from molecule was 10 angstroms, now - 15). No effect. Momentum overflow at 15 ns time point of simulation.
  • Changed forcefield from opls3 to opls2005. No effect. The same result.
  • Recalculated forcefield parameters (opls3). Detected some non-parametrized torsions. In result - the same (momentum overflow).
In simulation results of crashed MTD calculation in latest frames some solvent molecules bonds are strtched. This is strange. This not depends from solvent type (water, dmso or other).
This error NOT depends from machine, gpu type, OS type (some error on ubuntu, Scientific Linux 6 and 7)

Hello everyone,
Im doing a pushover Analysis of a cantilever beam in ABAQUS, made of reinforced concrete, but my model doesnt seem to converge proberly. The program simply aborts before hitting a run away value, see attach graph. The beam is exposed to bending of course.
I have tested the material model by doing an uniaxial compressive and tensile test, both without rebars and with rebars located in the center of the beam. Doing these tests the model works fine, meaning the calculated responses from ABAQUS are identical to the inputted stress-strain curves.
I have tried the pushover analysis with both the smeared cracking model and the plastic damage model of concrete, but the results are the same. Furthermore I have tested different mesh sizes which all should be within the limitations.
Have anyone some experience to share regarding this? :)

In addition to the answer above, I wouold say that the method in numerical modeling is to begin first with everything with elasrtic behavior and to compare the results with an analytical study. It will help you as well to be sure the problem is in the model itself and not in the definition of the behavior of the elements.
For the hysteresis behavior, search the Equivalent Strut Model. Several hysteresis behavior exist.

Hi everyone, Im a beginner to Abaqus and I'm having some problems doing some simple benchmark calculations.
One thing is that my model is not aborting when I increase the load (way above the collapse load) so Im not able to investigate the collapse load/runaway load since there is non. Would anyone have some suggestion to solve that?
Im modelling in 3D space, Im using the shell elements S4 and the step increment is very small (initial 0.001 and maximum 0.01), I inputted yield stress and elasticity and it is a static incremental analysis.
The elastic behavior matches the analytical solution (for Euler-Bernoulli Beam), but the collapse load just never occurs for the plastic solution .. see graph

Hi!
This problem indicates a failed linear search. People usually advise to use larger integration grid (Integral=UltraFineGrid at least) but this changes Your model chemistry and hence Your new results will be incomparable with previous ones. You. It is also advised to add Integral=Acc2E=11 option.
But if You do not want to change Your model chemistry, maybe adding options like SCF=FullLinear, or setting SCF=MaxNR=N value to something less than default 2 would help.
This information is largely obtained from the Computational Chemistry List mailing list messages (which are not yet archived and thus not yet available to general public). But You can subscribe at ccl.net. The list has vast community of true experts in the field, not undermen like me.

Submission script I use for vasp/5.5.4-omc is

The script is same as for "plain" vasp/5.4.4 except for:
module load vasp/5.4.4-omc   AND
mpirun -np 16 vasp_std
since I googled it and they suggest for running non default modules to add number of processes, in this case -np 16 as we have 16 cores per node on our computer cluster.
However, 16 is number of cores/processes/nodes although not sure about it as I went through different interpretations. This matches the number of cores (32) I got in OUTCAR when working with vasp/5.4.4. or else it's  -np 16 as it's meant to be number of cores/processes per node and I choose to work with l=nodes=2?

Any ideas or suggestions, please?

I've made a model in Abaqus which is 2 parts of tibia bone, callus and external fixator. I've used tet mesh and global size 2 for all parts; but I want to user a finer mesh for callus part. When I change the size from 2 to 1 the job is aborted and give me this type of error:
"The volume of 1 elements is zero, small, or negative. Check coordinates or node numbering, or modify the mesh seed. In the case of a tetrahedron this error may indicated that all nodes are located very nearly in a plane. The elements have been identified in element set ErrElemVolSmallNegZero."

I am trying to run soil consolidation in Abaqus with a load of 150kPa over saturated two-layer soil. A simple Mohr–Coulomb model has been adopted at this stage.
Abaqus aborted the analysis with an error ‘Too many increments made for the step’.
I have tried to decrease the time interval to very small increments and also increased the value of cohesion, but nothing worked.
Can anyone help me to figure out the error?
Thanks in advance.

Dear all,
We want to model a pressure vessel using WCM (Wound Composite Modeler). We have built a model  by following  the instructions in user manual and examples. For post processing, UVARM subroutine was generated by WCM Plug-in. Then we have run our input file with UVARM subroutine; however, we have encountered an error as expressed below;
" Abaqus Error: The executable Standard with system error aborted with system error "illegal memory reference". (signal 11). please check the .dat, .msg, and .sta files for error messages if the files exist."
Since we have no internet connection at our computer where input files are run, we can not generate system information to report. When we search the error on the internet, common offer for solving problem is avoiding parallelization but we have tried it with one cpu and we have encountered with same problem again.
By the way, to compile and run our model, we made some changes in UVARM subroutine file. It is that logical definitions were changed into integer definitions (e.g. false->0 and true->1) because we use gfortran as compiler.
Could you please inform us about the possible solutions to our problem? We're looking forward to your reply. Thank you in advance.

Dear fellow colleagues,
I am trying to simulate unsteady particle flows in a simple tube under the effects of air being blown into the tube using the DPM model provided in FLUENT. All is good until I have activated the DEM collision. Ansys inject the particles but shortly deletes them aftewards, the message in the console panel is:
"Injecting 500 particle parcels with mass 1e-20 at t = 0.004
number tracked = 500, escaped = 0, aborted = 0, trapped = 0, evaporated = 0, incomplete = 0
Deleted 500 particles in injection injection-0 with total mass 1.000000e-20 kg"
Can anyone help with this problem please?
Sincerely,
Karim
Relevant answer
Answer
Hi,
have you tried to increase the particle mass? Why it should be so small like 1.0e-20 kg? Essentially, if your particles have a mass like a computer machine zero, than for the program the momentum of the particles is equivalent to (machine) zero as well. I can imagine, that this could make it difficult to solve a particle momentum transport equation, because there is essentially nothing to transport or to balance (solving an equation 0=0). So try to specify DEM conditions which make more physical sense. DEM is probably not an allowed option for massless particles (there is a special option for massless particles in ANSYS Fluent, which is essentially equivalent to calculating flow streamlines; but DEM collisions do not make sense for streamlines, since streamlines never intersect with each other by theory).

Dr. Th. Frank.

what are the causes of recurrent abortion in women?
Relevant answer
Answer
Recurrent abortion is classically defined as the occurrence of three or more consecutive pregnancy loss before 20 weeks' gestation or with a fetal weight of below 500 g; the causes include parental chromosomal abnormalities, untreated hypothyroidism, uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, certain uterine anatomic abnormalities, and antiphospholipid antibody syndrome . Other probable or possible etiologies include additional endocrine disorders, heritable and/or acquired thrombophilia’s, immunologic abnormalities, infections such as toxoplasmosis and urinary tract infection in pregnant women, and environmental factors. Advancing maternal age is associated with an increased risk of miscarriage, which is thought to be due to poor egg quality leading to chromosomal (genetic) abnormalities and possibility of abortion.

Last week expert Austin Ruse President/C-Fam, Editor & Publisher/Friday Fax (https://c-fam.org/) raised the alert that the UN is negotiating a new hard-law treaty that will make Church teachings crimes against humanity.
How could this possibly be?
Here’s how he explained it.
" UN Member States are now negotiating a new hard-law treaty on “crimes against humanity.” These are generally regarded as those crimes that offend all of humanity, such as the genocide of the Jews by the Germans during World War II.
The new treaty very well may include the following:
“Sexual orientation and gender identity”
And
“Forced pregnancy”
Please knew we oppose all unjust discrimination against those with same-sex attraction. However, we cannot support the idea that opposing “sexual orientation and gender identity” as a new “crime against humanity.” This would criminalize the teachings of the Church.
We faced the notion of “forced pregnancy” when the International Criminal Court was negotiated twenty years ago. In the hands of the left, “forced pregnancy” means that a woman cannot get an abortion.
Working with UN Member States twenty years ago, we got it defined as the repeated rape of a woman for the purposes of changing the demographic profile of a country, literally holding a woman prisoner until she gives birth.
But, the left is back again and they want to insert “forced pregnancy” into the new treaty but without a definition so they can define it later against the unborn child.
This is how the new treaty will criminalize the teachings of the Church. And this is why we oppose this new language, and why we need your help."
I think that it is a problem for all humanity, it is not only a problem for catholics like myself. It seeks to force pro-abort legislation in all countries that have some protection for the unborn. If this UN treaty is approved, besides multiplying the number of aborts, many more women would be dangeroulsy wounded in their feminity because the post-abort syndrom, and beside the problems of an aging population would increase without limit. This is really irresponsably encouraging an inhumane behavior. For what use is the UN today?

Hi,
I'm trying to model the failure mode of an simple rectangular FRP sheet with Hashin damage criteria, but I couldn't get the element deletion initiated, even though the HSNFTCRT (hashin damage criteria) for some elements has already become 1. Following are some clues and details for my modelling so far:
1) A homogeneous shell planar part was chosen so there's no much choice for the orientation, but the part is meshed in its fibre direction. Since the fibres are all unidirectional I don't think composite shell would make much difference.
2) For the material properties I entered elastic lamina properties with fail stress and strain, followed by Hashin damage criteria and damage evolution.
3) I tried Mesh > Element Type > Element Deletion ON, but the deletion could still not be initiated. Standard or Explicit didn't make too much difference.
4) When applying the load I chose a static, general step with a displacement load on one edge of the sheet. Changing the displacement value didn't make much difference since the job would abort close to the failure stress/strain from material properties.
5) I turned on STATUS, DAMAGEFT and HSNFTCRT in field output request, and for the results, the STATUS always gives an output of 1 and DAMAGEFT mostly gives 0, even though for some elements the HSNFTCRT gives 1, meaning the fibre tension failure criteria has been reached.
6) I realised it might be too perfect if a pure rectangular model is created, so I also tried to model a 'necked' sheet (like an hourglass shape rotated 90 degrees), but the jobs still get aborted due to 'too many attempts' or 'time increment less than minimum'. I think it's because that no element deletion is happening, and so the solution is not convergent.
I have searched for videos, tutorials and some other similar questions, but the results aren't too helpful. Therefore, I tried to make my situation above as detailed as possible. I appreciate for any ideas provided about this question, and for any other information I didn't mention above, I will try my best to check often and reply ASAP. Thank you very much.

Perhaps, you need to be more specific on what changes you made and for how long the model did run. If the model has successfully run for a while and stops at some point, the error could be not related to the model and the approach that you used. Rather the error may come from your input data: boundary data. Double check on that and I hope you will find the solution.

Hi all,
I'm simulating a delta wing. I have created a hexa mesh in ICEM. For my initial boundary layer height of 2e-6m the simulation ran without any issue in ANSYS CFX. Now I reduced the value to 8e-7 and CFX aborts with the error that the symmetry plane is not a strict plane. It states the face set 5 in the symmetry boundary patch causes the issue.
I wonder how I can resolve the issue/ find the issue in first place (find the boundary patch). My domain is very big and has 6 million elements so looking at the mesh itself proofs to be challenging.
I do not want to change the expert parameters and I have already used the "move nodes" tool in ICEM to move all the nodes on the symmetry plane to z=0 (that's where my symmetry plane is).
Can someone help with some advice please?
Relevant answer
Answer
Hi,
To me, this is a problem of machine precision. I am no expert at CFX but increasing the precision may resolve the problem. Use double precision (if there is) settings for CFX and also increase tolerance in ICEM (Settings).

I have created a Simulink model of PID controlled Bouc Wen MR damper semi active suspension. The feedback signal to PID is taken as sprung mass displacement and reference value is set to '0' (zero). The output of PID control is to be voltage signal for MR damper.
While trying to auto tune the PID controller, I am getting the error:
Linearization aborted because the linear plant model seen by the PID block is effectively '0'.
Ensure the PID loop is physically closed and none of the block in the PID loop returns '0' when linearized at time t = 0.
I have used saturation block after PID with upper limit 5 and lower 0. (as MR damper max input voltage is 5 volts and min is 0).
Error image is attached.
Relevant answer
Answer
Hi Pankaj,
In my previous post, I have mentioned that the Saturation block is a Discontinuous function block. Since your Reference Value is 0, the Absolute value function block |u|, is continuous at 0, but is not differentiable at 0. It may also cause an issue in the linearization process.
I ran the simulation and the Diagnostic Viewer (see attachment) showed that it contain an algebraic loop. The fatal error occurred when a suspected singularity was detected in the Integrator block inside the Bouc Wen MR Damper.
Please solve these issues before attempting to tune the PID controller. Also try to tidy up your Simulink model because certain parts look like "spaghetti". It will be helpful to identify I/O signals when you want to troubleshoot the system.
Now, let's see what Dr. Zeashan H. Khan will advise.

Check the material properties, and boundary conditions. I would suggest that you start with simple linear elastic material properties and simple boundary conditions, and get your model working and then you can start introducing more complexity to the model, i.e . material and geometric non-linearities, contact elements etc.

Compression of a flat Cylindrical Rubber of 50mm dia and 15mm thick by an Aluminium Rod of 16mm dia and 70mm long horizontally placed on rubber cylinder.
BC: displacement of Al Rod 5mm vertically downwards compressing the rubber cylinder.
Simulation converges perfectly within minutes when i use Mesh type: Quadratic, Hybrid Formulation, Reduced Integration with Mesh seed size 3, 4, 5 (mm) for the rubber cylinder.
However, it is not converging for finer Mesh seed size of 1 & 2 (mm). Simulation starts taking smaller time steps after around 80% and after around 90% completion, the Job gets aborted. Shouldn't the simulation converge 100% for finer mesh and produce better results ? Where am I going wrong ?
Relevant answer
Answer
Finer mesh FE models can capture more detailed local deformation. For rubber structures, compared with steel structures, usuall they will have even larger local large deformation or distortion.
Therefore, when the mesh quality is not so good, then very likely some finite elements will deform to some kind of negative volume configuration. So please check and improve your mesh quality if this is the case.
From the picture, it seems that the mesh quality of the rubber part is not so good, especiall the central part in contact with the aluminium rod.

Hello:

Although, I have applied an S33 compresive stress in the z-direction (like the overburden stress), but there is no simulation or discretization in the z-direction.
But now there is! I am now dealing with 3D model, where the meshing is pretty much the same, except for far more elements. I have attached a picture of my model.
The problem I am facing is that my *GEOSTATIC step is not getting completed. All the displacement changes are achieving equilibrium, but the pressure changes far exceeds equilibrium. I think the answer could be None. The woman can go online and buy CYTOTEC/MISOPROSTOL and it will be delivered by mail in 3 days and she can take it and the unwanted fetus is aborted. And there could be doctors willing to stock it and provide it to women who want to miscarry. Since Misoprostol works, there is no more issue about banning abortion. The only issue is making sure all women know there is a pill that causes abortions if they take it early enough. Abortion is pretty obsolete.

One of the most controversial and sensitive issue confronting most individuals: Abortion. These type of societies seeks to bring justice and fairness in the political arena, social and economic sectors. In this sense, the government is used as a tool of making decisions where they are needed. On the other hand, democracy brings about vesting of authority on the citizens. In such types of democracies, why or why not should abortion be a criminal offense?

From a psychological perspective, you have to look at the underlying reasons, for instance rape, incest, safety of the mother and the unborn child, and one very important point 'Education'! From this perspective we have to see the person, what are they going through? would they be able to cope with looking after a young child? I don't feel that making abortion a criminal action is going to help the issue. We live in a world that advocates the use of contraception I do think we have to look at how we educate people and why it is not as effective as it should be! The amount of children that at present are suffering from abuse, malnutrition and unfortunately disabilities, I think we should be focusing on the question, 'if abortion was made a criminal act how many more unwanted children are going to suffer?'

A central problem with your question is the comparison. Compared with what?
When we compare women who had had an induced abortion with women who had a pregnancy that was not terminated, we are not comparing women who are the same in all other respects. And the usual 'adjusting for…" analyses or even propensity scoring go only part way to the answer.
One problem is that of self-stigma. Self-stigma and shame are important drivers of poor mental health among people who have socially stigmatised illnesses (HIV, for example, or TB in many culture, and certainly mental illness) or who have to engage in socially stigmatised behaviours such as sex work.
The problem you pose is a good example of a "wicked problem" – a problem whose understanding and management depend critically on how we formulate it.
