It seems that 'the social sciences' has a clearly defined core of disciplines - sociology, politics, anthropology - but is rather fuzzy at the edges. I'm trying to get my head around the concept, recognising that it is fluid and fluctuates historically. I wonder if the humanities, in so far as they study human society, are also social sciences? Are history of science and philosophy of science also social sciences? And does the opposition between 'social sciences' and 'natural sciences' hold since the natural sciences involve socially and culturally situated activities? In addition, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary fields such as environmental studies and pandemic studies seem to transcend these categories. I would love to hear your views.

The oil spill attracted attention to the chemicals that are commonly used to combat oil pollution, namely, detergents (the other words that are near synonyms: surfactants, dispersants, surface-active agents, foams, washing liquids). Are these chemicals of environmental hazard? The answer was given in a relatively recent book - see below.

The ocean is playing a crucial role in influencing global climate and supporting sustainable development. The ecosystem is facing unprecedentedly threatens from humans related and non-related factors. Learning science is important to understand the driver for current and direction for future. Science depends on accurate and updated observations, thus science could help to make the linkage between physics and ecosystem. However, the linkage nowadays seems way underestimated that scientists and policy makers are too focusing in their field. Could we make the change?

Does anyone have experience with GVS Life Science's Swab Kit?

In common usage of English, do you think people assume that "Environmental Science" is part of the Earth Sciences? To me I see a strong overlap, but I also see Environmental Science as including other non Earth sciences such as biology, atmospheric science, toxicology, geography, sociology and political science (policy). I ask because my Geology and Geophysics department wants to change its name and is debating including "environmental" in the title.
