Studying Single-Parent families
Question
  • Apr 2025
Hi all,
I am working on preparing a dissertation proposal and I'm hoping to recruit families of children from 6-36 months. The goal is to compare differences in parent-centered variables (parental self-efficacy, psychopathological symptoms, etc.) across three groups (single-moms, single-dads, and dual-parent families) in terms of the impact family structure has on child and dyad variables (interaction, parent-child bond, child social-emotional development, etc.).
My question is if there's a good way to recruit single-parent families? I'm particularly concerned about recruiting single-fathers given the difficulty of getting fathers involved in research in general, at least within the U.S.
Would love any thoughts or ideas that may help with planning.

From a family system perspective, such a link would make sense...

How can baby and infant development and well being be measured?
Question
  • Feb 2014
I have been struggling for a while to find an easy to use developmental checklist that is in the public domain for babies and infants under 3 years. I am very familiar with more extensive testing measures such as the Bayleys screener etc and with measures such as Ages and Stages and BITSEA. But the former requires specialist skills and the latter are both copyright and not exactly what I want. How does, for example, a family support worker, get a sense of broad developmental milestones of a young infant? Are there measures for health visitors perhaps that have been well validated and normed.

Would you be interested in doing hyperscanning fMRI research on joint attention with infant parent dyads? is brain activity the same as adult dyads??
Question
  • Apr 2019
Would your group be interested in doing hyper scanning fMRI research on social interaction (joint attention) with infant-parent dyads? The brain activity with infant parent dyads may be very similar to adult dyads, as we are now discovering more precocious brain development, even in human newborns. Broccas area is an example of unexpectedly advanced neural circuitry in human infants. We also need to map out the critical and sensitive periods of human infant development and you have the technology to help!
