I wanted to write a full blog article or even a paper on this topic one day, but I just have had too much else on my plate. So instead, I think I'll ask the RG community to discuss the topic.
With the invention of social media and cell phones, we have lost a great deal of privacy. Or have we? Is privacy something that humans have had for a long time or is it just a modern luxury? Consider that most people have their own apartments or houses, and in those apartments and houses, most people have their own rooms. In a lot of societies, there is far less room to live, and a lot of people are often crowded together.
Bathing
Or how about taking a bath? For most of the modern world, the idea of taking a bath with a stranger is just absurd. And yet, up until recently, there would have been no way for the average person to afford their own bath, and public bath houses were the norm. In Japan, bath houses are still quite popular, though I imagine that they're on the decline to an extent.
Secrets
But of course, until recently, the only ones who knew your business were you and your close friends and relatives, right? I don't think so. Local communities have always been tight knit, and I think that people in those communities knew next to everything about each other. The only thing that has changed, perhaps, is the distance that this information has spread.
So, have we really lost privacy? Or do we have a great deal more privacy than we've ever had before?
