How much does a biologist know about signal processing, machine learning, and (theoretical) computer science?
Question
  • Feb 2020
I saw this questions and I need opinions about this!!!
How much does a biologist know about signal processing, machine learning, and (theoretical) computer science?Anyway, given a typical PhD student in biology, how much does he/she need to know about programming, signal processing, etc?
We (@Abdiel Jover Capote ) use something like a Raspberry Pi or Arduino to create a device that has GPS, a camera, and cell phone antenna, which could record much more information about the animal's location and activity and send it back you without as much effort. Or implement some algorithm using a drone to implement the mapping of marine areas at high resolutions (less 1m).

Great talk on the feeding strike of the mantis shrimp
Question
  • Jul 2009
"Biologist Sheila Patek talks about her work measuring the feeding strike of the mantis shrimp, one of the fastest movements in the animal world, using video cameras recording at 20,000 frames per second."
Take a look at this interesting TED talk at the following website: http://www.ted.com/talks/sheila_patek_clocks_the_fastest_animals.html

Are you a biologist and involved in science communication?
Question
  • Feb 2020
Hi,
Since I started doing regular science communication on my website OceanFact and on the related social medias, I have observed a large increase in my reach and the reads for my scientific publications.
Who does regular science communication (more than going to conferences and talking to your peers)? Did you observe a similar increase?
I love reaching out to a lay audience. It is so nice to get feedbacks and comments through the mailing list. :)
Since I started the facebook group for the project, the interactions with other biologists and science communicators have brought so many good ideas and projects. Science communications ideas and research ideas. 🎉
What do you do to communicate your science?
I am a marine biologist and I personally blog about marine science/environmental science on my website with contributions from other scientists and reach out to readers and other people on social medias.

Which species of Apseudes from Sicily (Tanaidacean) is this?
Question
  • Oct 2016
On behalf of a Italian biologist who contacted  me (Luca Giaccaglia), I ask experts from researchgate to give their opinion on this Apseudes species from a marine area of Sicily (Italy). Luca says it is similar to A. grossimanus, but not the same. As I'm no expert myself on tanaids from the Mediterranean I ask you. You can answer on researchgate or send Luca (giaccaglia@ecots.it) your opinion/advice.
Although his pictures are not that good, an expert may see something that can help him.

How can you evaluate population size in rare cave amphibians?
Question
  • Feb 2014
Standard sampling methods used to estimate population size and dynamics like mark/recapture in traps, funnels, fences usually used for epigean amphibians cannot be used for the ones who live in underwater caves like the Proteidae. These animals live only in deep water, encounters are rare and sampling is difficult and usually made by support non-biologist cave divers. They also have a fragile and slender body unsuitable for ID pins, rings or marks. Any idea on how we can have a precise evaluation on these animals?
