What does Durkheim mean when he used the word "chaotic" to develop his "anomic" category of suicide?
Question
  • Aug 2016
Nearly every article published on suicide from sociology viewpoint will quote Durkheim, and some will start fitting types of suicides in this 21st century lifestyle into one of his four categories of suicide of "egoistic, altruism, anomic and fatalism".
What I can understand was Durkheim was using "chaotic" to describe the changes in the economic system then of division of labour due to industrial revolution in a longer term period observed from his studies (e.g. a few decades) and its impact on the people and society then, and not day to day life stresses? And not even stock markets fluctuations as he has given some examples of French earlier bourses crashes then in the 19th century. To him, these are short-term shock to the system, not underlying change in the society.
Now I am getting confused ...

Collective consciousness, is there such a thing?
Question
  • Jan 2021
I'm interested on your opinion regarding the concept of collective consciousness. According to Émile Durkheim, collective consciousness is the set of shared beliefs, ideas, attitudes, and knowledge that are common to a social group. Durkheim believe that this set is responsible of our sense of belonging and identity, as well as our behavior. Do you really believe that? And if so, do you think that "collective consciousness" is the best name for such set?

Can we assume that the cult of surplus value (the profit motive) will recede with the further concentration of capital?
Question
  • Mar 2012
I consider the cult of surplus value to be an evolution of previous religious beliefs. Durkheim mentions the extinction of the totemic species and how the clan grows and splits like a living cell. With the rise of state-capitalism can we assume that this peculiar totem will go extinct. What would replace it?

Are CATHOLICS & PROTESTANTS still having different suicide rate in the 21st century?
Question
  • Aug 2016
More than a century ago, our few fathers of modern sociology discussed about Protestants being more industrial and individualistic, when they discuss about the spirit of capitalism, religious foundations of worldly asceticism (without strict dogma), and Weber wrote a book on "Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism". Durkheim used Catholics to compare with Protestants in his classic book of Suicide. Now, everybody uses Durkheim's suicide theories to apply to most anything to do with suicide.
Next year, in 2017, I think we are reaching the 120th years after Durkheim's classic "The Suicide". I was just wondering whether we still have that differences investigated by Durkheim in this 21st century world, lifestyle and practice, between Catholics and Protestants?
Thank you.
