I'm having a lot of difficulty with interviewing using narrative inquiry as I seem to be more in a conversation to illict stories
For example, the zenith of NA shows not much talking from the researcher and a lot of data from the respondent in terms of a story.
I don't have a lot of time with the people, so can only build relationships on one session or maximum two. I used dialogue and conversation to gain a flow and relationship. However, this seems to be at odds with NI
for example:
V: yeah. yeah. since my dad died I've always just gone there for some peace (peace comes up a lot ) Its my little bit of "ahh!" (laughs)
J: yeah definitely sounds like its important to you (My assumption comes in as Its not important to me,.) So you come from London to Wales totally different
V: Totally different
J: Is there anything different about you?
V: I don't' have panic attacks any more and I'm not as anxious any more. umm I don't know I said I've changed my image
J: What image was that?
V: hahaha! I just didn't want to be as down and depressing anymore, I just wanted to be ... well some days I'm like that...
J: of course
I am coming from a social constructionist approach so was therefore going to argue that it can be done in this way as it is a mutual construction, and given the time constraints I used the conversation aspect of questioning. I am not looking at CA/DA but thematic analysis.
this is my pilot interview so I know I need to brush up on my skills and questioning etc.
Can you help please? have you found your NI interviews look like this too?
