Narraitve Inquiry: When interview text look like conversations instead of stories.. help?
Question
  • Jan 2017
I'm having a lot of difficulty with interviewing using narrative inquiry as I seem to be more in a conversation to illict stories
For example, the zenith of NA shows not much talking from the researcher and a lot of data from the respondent in terms of a story.
I don't have a lot of time with the people, so can only build relationships on one session or maximum two. I used dialogue and conversation to gain a flow and relationship. However, this seems to be at odds with NI
for example:
V: yeah. yeah. since my dad died I've always just gone there for some peace (peace comes up a lot ) Its my little bit of "ahh!" (laughs)
J: yeah definitely sounds like its important to you (My assumption comes in as Its not important to me,.) So you come from London to Wales totally different
V: Totally different
J: Is there anything different about you?
V: I don't' have panic attacks any more and I'm not as anxious any more. umm I don't know I said I've changed my image
J: What image was that?
V: hahaha! I just didn't want to be as down and depressing  anymore, I just wanted to be ... well some days I'm like that...
J: of course
I am coming from a social constructionist approach so was therefore going to argue that it can be done in this way as it is a mutual construction, and given the time constraints I used the conversation aspect of questioning. I am not looking at CA/DA but thematic analysis.
this is my pilot interview so I know I need to brush up on my skills and questioning etc.
Can you help please? have you found your NI interviews look like this too?

Using a characteristic questionnaire as part of Narrative Inquiry. Yes or No?
Question
  • Sep 2017
I am debating on whether to use a questionnaire pre-interview to gain characteristic information about the respondent.
I am working in an area of disadvantage, and it would be good to gain some information about them such as age, number of children, time in employment, disability etc. the question structure come from the UK census. However, I am not sure whether this goes against the ethos of NI.
What do you think?

Which approach should I use for semi structure interview analysis inductive or deductive?
Question
  • Feb 2018
My research project is based on developing students' writing skills competence. it is quasi experimental study mixed method involved pre-test and post test nine weeks intervention. data were collected from think aloud protocol of group discussion based on three genres ( narrative, descriptive and argumentative) and semi structured interview was conducted on the key respondents students with the largest gained scores, medium and lowest on post-test. I am now confused which approach to use Inductive or Deductive for analysis of interview . deductive is based on predetermined concepts and its frequency of occurrences in the data set file whereas inductive looks for new or emerging themes from analysis of the interview data. I need help in this regard. Thank you!

Can I apply the method of deconstruction on a life story interview?
Question
  • Sep 2015
Atkinson (2002) suggests a three steps process of life story interviewing viz., planning for interview (1), process of doing interview (2) and transcribing along with interpreting interview (3).
By following all these steps, I have converted the interview into a story, removed interviewer's comments and remarks, as guided by Atkinson 2002. My goal behind conducting this interview is to understand the cultural construction of an issue, a truth. To achieve this goal I want to apply the reading method of deconstruction on the target narrative..
Can anyone give me surety for my plan... how far am I correct?
