Using Sum Scores in scientific measurement in social sciences, especially in SEM analysis
Question
  • Oct 2020
There are some doubts about the reliability when using sum scores (means) of respondents answers in scientific measurement in social sciences. I agree that summing responses in previously developed scales could lead to unproper results or just too superficial results.
The major difference in SEM (Structural Equation Modeling) is that the loadings from the indicators in the latent variable are different that in sum scores.
What if a scientist theoretically justify the construction of a scale that some indicators (questionnaire responses) are summed?
It would be regarded as a methodological mistake?

Does knowledge comes only with the age or number of years one spends in a particular field?
Question
  • Jan 2013
Earlier I raised one question that what is the impact of a "review article" compared to a "research article" in scientific community. The topic was very well discussed but many of the topic followers commented that the review article should be written by senior researchers and so on. This is just one example and such would be several cases where seniors are given priority than juniors in every field, not just science. Does this mean that knowledge of a particular field comes only with the age and number of years one spends in a particular field?
Isn't it that if one works hard can attain the same maturity and knowledge comparable to his senior counterpart? Shouldn't there be equal opportunities for both seniors and juniors based on their caliber and potential and not just by their seniority or juniority?

What would "Convergence" perspective imply in Social Sciences?
Question
  • Oct 2016
Convergence approach is viewed evermore as an approach to be adopted in scientific research. The life sciences, physical sciences, Engineering, culture & media studies seem to have made major advances with convergence approach. What need the social sciences to do to get out of their departmental ghettos and work in partnership with others? Produce research papers with co-authorship, or use citations from other areas in one's research? In historiography would be necessary to work more along the view of connected histories?

Can you help me list variable effects in social sciences ?
Question
  • Apr 2016
Hello everyone,
working on my Phd I realized I didn't really know which type of effects I wanted to show between my variables so I began to think about the different variable effects we can find in social sciences.
I ended up modeling the ones I knew about. I would need your help to complete the list, get any paper about those effects or methods to compute them (SEM for causation, etc.).
Thank you !
