I am doing a study analysing social media data (text, emojis, images, videos, and audio) to investigate translanguaging strategies, but I find myself torn between multimodal discourse analysis (MDA) and computer-mediated discourse analysis (CMDA) as the primary framework.
Initially, I assumed MDA would better address multimodal semiotics (e.g., integrating visual/audio modes), while CMDA might prioritise textual analysis. However, Herring (2019, p. 16) reconceptualised CMDA to an analysis of computer-mediated communication in all its multimodal forms, and "...computers are defined broadly to include any digital communication device" (Herring and Androutsopoulos, 2015, p. 127). Both approaches offer broad toolkits with adaptable analytical methods. So, how should I decide between using MDA and CMDA?
