What causes a child to lose its curiosity by the time it finishes elementary school?
Question
  • Apr 2017
Generally speaking in the USA, from the time a child is a baby, it is curious about all the world around them; they are continuously asking "why?".
But by the time a child finishes elementary school, it is more interested in being popular with its peer group. The exceptions are the "nerds."
What have our schools done to our children's innocence?

What is your best lecturing trick?
Question
  • Apr 2017
I have been teaching for close to 35 years, and in my experience, the simplest and best way of getting trust and build a contract between lecturer and student is to learn all student names. Addressing students by name is very handy. Some students may of course feel this a little treathening, but my experience is still that 'this tastes more' than it costs

Should we identify "teaching" and "educating" with "lecturing"?
Question
  • Dec 2013
“If we want to change the world, we should first change education” said once a friend of mine, making more evident than ever the fact that education nowadays is “in crisis”. Taking for example higher education, apparently the main objective has changed (in most cases) from “educating students” to “preparing effective workers”, following teaching models/methods which fail to motivate and waken the inherent human curiosity. Some of us involved in education usually use the term “lecture” of “lecturing” as equal to “teaching” or even worse, make this false equivalence everyday practice!
So, let’s all express as briefly as possible what is the first thing that comes in our mind when hearing the term “lecturing” and what when hearing “teaching”.
