How would you characterise the cognitive processes underpinning continuous versus discrete signifieds?
Question
  • Jan 2014
No doubt, the spatial character of count nouns and perfective verbs stems from boundary detection. But, the perceptual process responsible for distinguishing count and mass nouns, as well as perfective and imperfective verbs, is not spatial in the (top-down) sense of being near or far away, as Langacker suggests, but spatial perception in the sense of spatial versus temporal presence.

What are your thoughts on subject personal pronouns in Caribbean Spanish?
Question
  • Oct 2014
Dear all,
I am currently in the process of drafting a new research project on the use of Spanish subject personal pronouns. Basically, I am the only one at my university who is working on Hispanic Sociolinguistics, so I don't have any collegues to discuss my ideas with. Therefore, I would want to ask the research community for their thoughts on the attached research project.
Thanks in advance,
Jeroen Claes.

What are your thoughts on universal grammar (UG)?
Question
  • May 2014
Do you think Universal Grammar is the answer to understanding (human) language? Do you think the physiological basis of UG implies a deterministic language process, something which contradicts evolutionary theory (ie our brains had a capacity to produce language as we know it today, way before we ever got here, which would imply that this brain domain was selected for without any real selection pressures, (either that or it is a byproduct of other evolutionary trajectories) and if this is the case it would determine what our language can/could actually be, if as some have suggested that UG encompasses all that is (human) language.

And if in addition to advancing in “Artificial Intelligence” we further investigate our “Natural Intelligence”?
Question
  • Jan 2022
And if in addition to advancing in “Artificial Intelligence” we further investigate our “Natural Intelligence”?
for example, Natural Intelligence and Research in Neurodegenerative diseases.
While we are still at an early stage in answering some key questions about Natural Intelligence [NI] [such as what algorithms the mind uses] the rapidly advancing Artificial Intelligence [AI] has already begun to change our Daily Lives. Machine learning has brought to light remarkable potential in healthcare, facilitating speech recognition, clinical image analysis, and medical diagnosis. For example, there is a growing need for automation of medical imaging, as it takes a lot of time and resources to train an Expert Human Radiologist. Deep learning AI architectures have been developed to analyze medical images of the brain, lungs, heart, breast, liver, skeletal muscle, some of which have already been used in clinics to aid in disease diagnosis.

What do multiple changes in cognitive schemas tell us about neuroplasticity?
Question
  • Mar 2014
I am currently writing a grant proposal on the interconnectedness of grammatical constructions. The proposal involves examination of changes in grammar across the lifespan (beyond childhood) and whether or not various such changes are interconnected. To embed the proposal within a wider scientific interest in neuroplasticitiy, I am looking for literature on neuroplasticity with regard to cognitive processing of the world. I am thinking of longitudinal research in the tradition of K. Schaie on IQ; or applications from cognitive therapy such as EMDR that work on deeply entrenched complex cognitive structures. I am particularly interested to know if any research exists on changing world views or interconnected changing cognitive schemas (e.g., the effect of migrating or changing one’s religion on how other aspects of reality are experienced).
