In Southeast Asian countries, where vitamin D deficiency is common, available data on the association between low 25(OH)D concentrations and adverse pregnancy outcomes are limited. This study aimed to identify the relationship between vitamin D levels of pregnant women and pregnancy outcomes in Indonesia and Malaysia. The study applied a prospective cohort approach, including 775 mother-infant pairs from selected public health facilities in West Sumatra (Indonesia) and Selangor and Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia). Blood samples were collected to evaluate serum 25(OH)D concentrations during the third trimester of pregnancy. Generally, the mean concentration of 25(OH)D throughout pregnancy was 18.04 ± 9.97 ng/ml and the prevalence of the vitamin D deficiency, insufficiency, and sufficiency status were 30.50%, 40.10%, and 29.40%, respectively. Infants born to mothers with higher 25(OH)D concentrations had increased birth weight and head circumference (p<0.05), although no significant correlation was found with length at birth. Furthermore, a significant percentage of pregnant women in Indonesia and Malaysia had insufficient vitamin D status. Maternal vitamin D status is associated with newborn anthropometric measurements in birth weight and head circumference. However, additional studies are needed to confirm these results.

In the preconception period, support is required at a higher concentration than in the earlier period. Intergenerational malnutrition can be caused by the nutritional status of the mother during the preconception period. Therefore, there is a need for nutritional readiness in the preconception period to improve the health status of mothers and children in Indonesia. This study aims to obtain the factors that influence preconception nutritional readiness in prospective brides in Bantul regency. This study was a cross-sectional study involving 111 premarital women in Bantul regency, Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Data collected were socio-demographic data and preconception nutritional readiness that measured by 10 indicators including: (1) body mass index/BMI, (2) mid-upper arm circumference/MUAC, (3) hemoglobin level; (4) energy intake, (5) protein intake, (6) calcium intake, (7) iron intake, (8) folate intake, (9) preconception nutrition knowledge, and (10) iron and/or folate supplement consumption. Data were analyzed using chi-square test with statistical significance at p-value < 0,05. The majority of subject could only fulfill 5 indicators of preconception nutrition readiness. Knowledge, calcium and folate intake were the lowest 3 indicators that could be met (<40%). There was no significant relationship between socio-demographic factors and education history with preconception nutritional readiness. Subject with age > 25 years, higher education, work, and had received preconception nutrition education, have a better mean nutritional readiness score.

Introduction: Complementary feeding practice is critical for adequate growth and development in children. Appropriate practices should be maintained, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: This cross-sectional study aimed to analyse complementary feeding practices and their related factors, including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on household economic aspects. Data were collected via online questionnaires involving 574 mothers of children aged 6–23 months in Indonesia from April to May 2022. Results: In total, 63.6%, 64.6%, 86.6%, and 57.7% of children met the criteria for timely introduction of complementary feeding (INTRO), minimum dietary diversity (MDD), minimum meal frequency (MMF), and minimum acceptable diet (MAD), respectively. Households that had no impact on their ability to provide food during the pandemic had higher odds of meeting MDD and MAD. Having a high household income level, high maternal education, and being a housewife increased the odds of INTRO. The odds of MDD increased in children who lived in Java, had older age, and whose mother had high education level. Older children had higher odds of having appropriate MMF. MAD was associated with mother’s high education level and being a housewife. Conclusion: Several factors during the pandemic, including economic aspects, influenced complementary feeding practices. To prevent child malnutrition, besides ensuring household food security, other strategies to increase complementary feeding quality are also needed.

Purpose Complementary feeding practices was more difficult during the COVID-19 pandemic due to economic instability, especially for animal source foods (ASFs) consumption. According to the problem, the purpose of this study was to determine the economic impact of COVID-19 pandemic on ASFs consumption and ASFs consumption related factors on complementary feeding in Indonesia. Design/methodology/approach This cross-sectional study was targeted at mothers of children aged 6–23 months during pandemic. A total of 574 respondents were obtained through online questionnaire. Findings This study found that flesh food, including fish/seafood, organ meat, meat, poultry and processed meat, were associated with all economic impact of COVID-19 pandemic; in contrast, those economic impacts did not affect the dairy product and egg consumption. Multivariate analysis showed children with older age (AOR: 1.13, 95%CI: 1.04–3.26), meet minimum dietary diversity (AOR: 2.17, 95%CI: 1.56–5.44) and are from high income level household (AOR: 1.14, 95%CI: 1.09–2.10) contributed to ASFs consumption. Practical implications Other strategies aimed at enhancing food security to increase ASFs consumption on complementary feeding. The government may consider short-term emergency purchasing subsidies and macro-control of the ASFs market. Nutrition education is also required to improve knowledge related to importance of ASFs consumption for children. Originality/value This study reveals the association between each food group of ASFs consumption on complementary feeding and the economic impact of COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND Social restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic have impacted eating patterns and psychological status, leading to changes in body weight and perceptions of a healthy lifestyle in society. This study aimed to investigate the effect of social restrictions on weight changes and perceptions of a healthy lifestyle in adults during the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia. METHODS This cross-sectional study was conducted using convenience sampling on 287 Indonesian adults from June to August 2020. The data were collected using a self-administered online questionnaire using Google Forms. Data were analyzed using the chi-square test and logistic regression analysis. RESULTS There was no effect of social restrictions on weight changes and perceptions of lifestyle in adults (p = 0.900 and 0.748, respectively). However, 112 respondents (78.3%) had positive perceptions or supported adopting a healthy lifestyle under large-scale social restrictions. Multivariable logistic regression demonstrated that adults aged 36–45 years had a 3.6 times higher risk of weight changes than young adults aged 25–35 years (p = 0.004, OR = 3.65, 95% CI = 1.51–8.85). CONCLUSIONS Social restrictions did not affect weight changes and perceptions of a healthy lifestyle in adults during the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia. However, older adults might have a higher risk of body weight changes. Controlling body weight is important to prevent further weight gain and the risk of noncommunicable diseases that can aggravate COVID-19.
