Two new chalcones, podocarchalcones A and B (1 and 2), together with five known chalcones (3–7), were isolated from the whole plants of Desmodium podocarpum. All of their structures were determined by spectroscopic methods including 1D and 2D NMR. Compounds 1–7 were evaluated for their anti-tobacco mosaic virus (anti-TMV) activity, and they exhibited activity with inhibition rates in the range of 15.2–22.4%, respectively.

Two new flavones, 6,4'-dimethoxy-8-formylflavone (1) and 6,7-dimethoxy-8-acetyl-4'-hydroxyflavone (2), together with five known flavones (3-7), were isolated from the leaves and stems of Hypericum chinense. The structure of 1-7 was elucidated by spectroscopic methods including extensive 1D and 2D NMR techniques. Compounds 1, 2, 6, and 7 were evaluated for their anti-tobacco mosaic virus (anti-TMV) activity. The results showed that compound 1 shows high anti-TMV activity with an inhibition rate of 31.4%, which is close to that of the positive control.


A New Isocoumarin from Bark of Lindera caudatat

A new isocoumarin, caudacoumarin D (1) was isolated from the bark of Lindera caudata. Its structure was elucidated by spectroscopic methods, including extensive 1D NMR and 2D NMR techniques. The antitobacco mosaic virus (anti-TMV) activity of 1 was evaluated. The results revealed that caudacoumarin D (1) showed anti-TMV activity with inhibition rate of 17.2 %.

A new butyrolactone, asperphenol C (1), was isolated from the fermentation products of an endophytic fungus Aspergillus versicolor. Its structure was elucidated by spectroscopic methods including extensive 1D-And 2D NMR techniques. Compound 1 was also tested for its antitobacco mosaic virus (anti-TMV) activity. The results showed that compound 1 exhibited anti-TMV activity with inhibition rate of 22.1 %.

A new biphenyl i.e., 3-methoxy-5-methoxycarbonyl-4-hydroxy-biphenyl (1) was isolated from the stems of Garcinia oligantha. Its structure was elucidated by spectroscopic methods, including extensive 1D- and 2D-NMR. This biphenyl was tested for its cytotoxicity against five human tumor cell lines (NB4, A549, SHSY5Y, PC3 and MCF7) and it showed modest cytotoxicity against SHSY5Y, A549 and MCF7 cell with IC50 values of 7.1, 6.2 and 4.8 μM, respectively.

Two new phenolic compounds, 6-hydroxy-7-methoxy-3-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2H-chromen-2-one (1) and 7-hydroxy-6-methoxy-3-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2H-chromen-2-one (2), together with six known phenols (3-8), were isolated from the stems of Cassia siamea. The structure of 1-8 was elucidated by spectroscopic methods including extensive 1D and 2D NMR techniques. Compounds 1-8 were evaluated for their anti-tobacco mosaic virus (anti-TMV) activity. The results showed that compounds 1 and 2 have potential anti-TMV activity with inhibition rates of 28.2 and 23.5%, respectively. Compounds 3-8 also showed anti-TMV activity with inhibition rates in the range of 11.6-19.8%.

Three new chromones, 5-methoxy-2,2-dimethyl-7-(2-oxopropyl)-2,3-dihydrochromen-4-one (1), 5-methoxy- 2,2-dimethyl-8-(2-oxopropyl)-2,3-dihydrochromen-4-one (2), and 1-(3,4-dihydro-5-methoxy- 2,2-dimethyl-2H-chromen-7-yl)propan-2-one (3), together with four known chromones (4-7) were isolated from the stems of Cassia fistula. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods, including extensive 1D- and 2D-NMR techniques. Compounds 1-5 were evaluated for their anti-tobacco mosaic virus (anti-TMV) activities. The results showed that compound 5 exhibited high anti-TMV activity with inhibition rate of 30.8% at a concentration of 20 mu M. The other compounds also exhibited potential anti-TMV activities with inhibition rates in the range of 15.6-22.1% at the same concentration. A new dihydroxanthone, (1R,2R)-2-hydroxy-6-(hydroxymethyl)-8-methoxy-9-oxo-2,9-dihydro-1H- xanthene-1-carboxylic acid (1) was isolated from the fermentation products of a Phomopsis fungus. Its structure was elucidated by spectroscopic methods. Compound 1 was tested for its cytotoxicity and it showed high cytotoxicity against NB4 and PC3 cell with IC50 values of 4.5 and 3.8 μM.
