Introduction: Hypothyroidism is the most common thyroid dysfunction. It is important to determine the cause because some forms are reversible. The objective of our study was to establish the profile of hypothyroidism in our practice. Methods: this was a retrospective study during the period from January 1, 2011 to June 30, 2019 including all patients with hypothyroidism confirmed by hormonal assays and followed at the Internal Medicine, Endocrinology, Diabetology and Nutrition department of the National Hospital Center of Pikine. Results: we retained 292 files of patients monitored for hypothyroidism. The average age of the patients was 49.7 years. There were 276 women and 16 men. Hypothyroidism was peripheral in 289patients (98.97%) and central in 3 patients (1.03%). Concerning the aetiologies of peripheral hypothyroidism, it was a thyroidectomy in 70 patients (23.97%), radio-iodine therapy in 7 patients (2.39%), Hashimoto’s disease in 58 patients (19.86%), atrophic thyroiditis in 10 patients (3.42%) and a thyroid hormone synthesis disorder in 2 patients (0.68%). In 140 patients suffering from peripheral hypothyroidism (47.94%), no aetiology could be retained. Hashimoto’s disease was associated with other autoimmune diseases in 3 patients including myasthenia gravis, Addison’s disease and Goujerot syndrome. For the three patients presenting thyrotropic insufficiency, Sheehan syndrome was suggested in the face of a notion of haemorrhagic delivery, followed by an absence of milk flow. Pituitary magnetic resonance imaging showed an empty Sella turcica appearance. Conclusion: we can conclude that the aetiologies of hypothyroidism in our practice are dominated by thyroidectomy and Hashimoto’s disease. The aetiology was undetermined in 48% of patients due to insufficient exploration.

... Hypertension was the most frequent presenting symptom (48.8%), a pattern observed in LMICs where functional adrenal tumors like pheochromocytomas are more prevalent [9]. In contrast, incidentaloma are more commonly detected in high-income countries, particularly in females during the sixth and seventh decades [10]. ...

... In clinical practice, inadequate control of hyperthyroidism is often the result of suboptimal adherence to ATDs. True ATD resistance as the cause of inadequate control of hyperthyroidism is rare and largely limited to case reports (25). There is no clear definition of ATD resistance, but reports have suggested that this diagnosis can be made in patients whose thyroid hormone levels remain elevated despite compliance to high doses of ATD (26) or when ATD doses exceeding that of standard dose ranges (up to 30mg/day for MMI and 300mg/day for PTU) are required to achieve euthyroidism (27). ...

... 17 Consistent with this finding is the report of previous study in Senegal which reported a male to female ratio of 0.67:1. 18 In this study, majority of the respondents had duration of DM of less than 5 years. The shorter duration of DM seen among the respondents may be due to late presentation to the hospital for early diagnosis and treatment as well as recall bias. ...

... Systematic or targeted screening for GDM is controversial and is reflected in the heterogeneity of international recommendations and professional practices [2,5,7] . The prevalence of GDM and its risk factors depend on the population studied and the screening criteria used [8][9][10] . Thus, the prevalence of GDM is difficult to estimate because of the difficulties of systematic screening and the diversity of diagnostic criteria [4,8,9] . ...

... Others (three authors) pursued a conservative line of management. While complete resolution was achieved in all cases, the course of 1 patient reported by Touré et al. [5] was complicated by pulmonary embolism. In our case, a trial of medical treatment failed and as the thrombus was free floating and threatening to embolize, we adopted a more aggressive approach. ...

... Additionally, the average age of onset diabetic ketoacidosis in the international literature varies between 31 and 45 years and it appears that the second and third decades of life are the most affected by this condition according to research conducted in Morocco [11]. Several international and national studies conducted on diabetic ketoacidosis cases consistently report a female predominance ranging from 51% to 60% [12,13], corroborating with our findings showing that 54.3% of diabetic ketoacidosis cases are females. It is suggested that this higher prevalence among females could be attributed to female hormones which make women more predisposed to diabetes and DKA compared to males. ...
