It was shown in the present work that the structurizing of lubricant compositions that are based on mineral oil can be accomplished with the aid of 'fatty acid pitch' - waste products from refining vegetable oils and industrial fats. The fatty acid pitch contains saturated and unsaturated acids, including myristic, palmitic, and oleic acids as well as their esters, and products of polymerization and condensation. The molecules of these compounds in the normal trans isomer state have a filamentary (nematic) shape, which results in structurizing of the fatty acid pitch. Fatty acid pitch of raw cottonseed oil and a mixture of fatty acid pitches of vegetable oils and industrial fats were investigated as structurizing additives for low-viscosity mineral oil.
