An underlying assumption behind this early conception of voice was that writer's identity existed in the material reality external to discourse, and that identity was being projected through discourse. In this conception of writer identity as projected self, honesty, or the accuracy of self-representation, was an important concern, and some writing teachers and researchers emphasized the presence of authentic self as the sine qua non of good writing (Coles & Vopat, 1985).
