Adultification involves juveniles (usually from the preteen to teenage stages) being perceived as adults or attributed adult-like characteristics, which can erode understanding or recognition of their developmental vulnerabilities and lead them to be viewed as more culpable or competent than their current developmental stage (Davis, 2022). Adultification depicts American childhood as "absent of adult responsibilities and behaviors," with anything else considered nonnormative (Burton, 2007, p. 330;Corsaro, 2005).
