... The species was described based on a specimen, stated to be from Asàm [=Assam] deposited by a Colonel Jenkins in the Museum of the Asiatic Society of Bengal between 1828 and 1853. However, the holotype was reported lost when a catalogue of reptile specimens at the Asiatic Society of Bengal was compiled by William Theobald Jr. 15 years later (Theobald 1868). Additional specimens donated by Major Hugh Thomas Berdmore (1811-1859) from Martaban, Myanmar, andLieutenant-Colonel Robert Christopher Tytler (1817-1872) from the Andaman Islands were listed by Theobald as S. maculatus, expanding the species' distribution. ...
