Modern drive systems for high-output boiler feed pumps in thermal power stations - whether still at the planning stage or long-since commissioned - call for high speeds and stepless control. Such systems aim at high efficiency, absolute dependability and minimum maintenance, all of which are satisfied when the converter-fed synchronous motor is used as a gearless high-speed drive. Although the initial investment is slightly higher than for conventional drives, it is soon recovered as a result of the higher efficiency. A number of high-speed drives of this type have been installed or are on order for a major power station in South Africa.
