The complex, elusive and sometimes ironic relationship between Jews and that ambiguous but widely used concept "the politics of the left" is the subject of this review. Although there exists substantial scholarly agreement about the preference of Jews for the politics of the left, there is no agreement as to the reasons for this preference. There is even less agreement concerning whether Jews have broken recently from their traditional political beliefs and are moving to the right. The books reviewed here grapple with these controversies while attempting to contribute to our understanding of relationship between Jewish culture and leftist politics. It remains to be seen whether Jews are undergoing a political reorientation or merely reflecting an episodic political drift affecting all Americans.
