This study presents the first report on the late autumn fauna (mid-October – late November) of geometrid moths (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) from Kuril Islands, Far East of Russia. A total of 22 species from Kunashir Island were identified, including two species new to Russia: Alsophila inouei Nakajima, 1989 and Inurois punctigera (Prout, 1915). Additionally, nine species are recorded for Kunashir Island for the first time: Erannis golda Djakonov, 1929, Erannis jacobsoni (Djakonov, 1926), Pachyerannis obliquaria (Motschulsky, 1861), Larerannis orthogrammaria Wehrli, 1927, Alsophila japonensis (Warren, 1894), Inurois asahinai Inoue, 1974, Inurois fumosa Inoue, 1944, Operophtera brunnea Nakajima, 1991 and Operophtera relegata Prout, 1908. Taxonomic notes on Erannis jacobsoni and Operophtera brunnea are provided. The ecological characteristics of the flight of imago of ‘winter’ geometrid moths on Kunashir Island are discussed briefly.

The autumn fauna of geometrid moths (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) from Kunashir Island is considered for the first time. Thirty two species are listed, among which two species — Ramobia mediodivisa Inoue, 1953, and Martania fulvida (Butler, 1881) are recorded for the fauna of Russia for the first time, and eight species are newly indicated for the Kuril Islands — Colotois pennaria (Linnaeus, 1761), Orthonama obstipata (Fabricius, 1794), Photoscotosia lucicolens (Butler, 1878), Epirrita autumnata (Borkhausen, 1794), Gandaritis fixseni (Bremer, 1864), Pennithera comis (Butler, 1879), Venusia phasma (Butler, 1879) and Spiralisigna subpumilata (Inoue, 1972). The phenological aspects of the collection period of the moths are briefly discussed.

... We have sampled extensively throughout genomes but do lack exemplars of the canonical Lyela (2 species) and Triphysa (3 species) genera. However, given that both of these clades are well-differentiated from other members of Coenonympha s. l. (Dubatolov et al., 2023;Lukhtanov, 2024), it is expected that the inclusion of additional taxa from these lineages will not improve resolution along the backbone of the phylogeny. For now, the uncertain placement of the genus Lyela keeps us from firmly concluding about the root of Coenonympha s. l. ...

... The family Lasiocampidae Harris, 1841 is the sole member of the superfamily Lasiocampoidea (Minet 1994;Regier et al. 2009;Zwick et al. 2011;Hamilton et al. 2019) containing 224 genera and 1952 species (van Nieukerken et al. 2011). Five subfamilies are distinguished (Zolotuhin 2015): 1. the Afrotropical Chionopsychinae Aurivillius, 1927 with one genus Chionopsyche Aurivillius, 1909 containing three species (Zolotuhin 2010), arguably one of the archaic groups resembling the members of the family Eupterotidae (Lemaire & Minet 1998;Zwick 2008); 2. the Mediterranean and South African Chondrosteginae Tutt, 1902 with four genera, two of which have brachypterous females, and about 20 species inhabiting mainly arid biotopes (Rougeot & Viette 1978;de Freina & Witt 1987;Zolotuhin 2007;de Freina et al. 2015;Rajaei et al. 2023); 3. the cosmopolitan Poecilocampinae Tutt, 1902 that contains two tribes: the Palaearctic and Afrotropical Poecilocampini Tutt, 1902 with seven genera and about 30 species, and the Neotropical Macromphaliini Franclemont, 1973 with 15 genera and about 584 species (Becker & Heppner 1996); 4. the Holarctic Malacosominae Tutt, 1902 with so far one genus Malacosoma Hübner, 1820 and about 20 species (Stehr & Cook 1968;Zolotuhin 2015); and 5. the Cosmopolitan Lasiocampinae Harris, 1841-the most diverse group containing nine tribes: 1) Lachneini Grote, 1888; 2) Lasiocampini Harris, 1841; 3) Macrothylaciini Tutt, 1902;4) Selenepherini Tutt, 1902;5) Trabaliini Tutt, 1902; 6) Pinarini Kirby, 1892; 7) Gastropachini Stroem, 1891; 8) Odonestini Tutt, 1902;and 9) Argudini Zolotuhin, 2012b -the last discovery in the suprageneric system of the family. Zolotuhin et al. (2012a,b) established and briefly described Argudini for one African and 11 Indomalayan genera based on the nucleotide sequences of the gene elongation factor-1 alpha (1168 bp) belonging to 49 species. ...
