A definition and a quantitative criterion for weak absorption in attenuated total reflection (ATR) spectroscopy are proposed. The fulfillment of conditions for weak absorption is proved to be necessary and sufficient for the applicability of the Bouguer-Lambert-Beer law in ATR spectroscopy. It is shown that, in the specifically chosen coordinate system, these conditions have a simple geometric interpretation.
