The authors present detailed analyses of PISA data on the repetition of school years. The article focuses on the question in how far the quota of students having to repeat a year differs between boys and girls and between migrants and non-migrants in both elementary and lower secondary school, - and in how far the influential factors of gender and migration are connected. The results point to two striking problem areas: the large number of migrant students (both boys and girls) who fail in elementary school and the sudden rise in the number of German students (especially boys) who have to repeat a year in the course of puberty.
