Potentilla fruticosa L. (Rosaceae) was found to be a dioecious tetraploid (2n = 28) in all three Estonian and in the only Latvian native populations. According to this, it will be confirmed that Estonian and Latvian shrubby cinquefoils belong to P. fruticosa s. str. We believe that in Estonia P. fruticosa is a relic plant, not the naturalized species, as suggested by some Estonian authors. In favourable conditions Estonian and Latvian populations of P. fruticosa have sufficient potential for sexual reproduction. However, vegetative renewal is prevalent in all locations.

... P. fruticosa is widely distributed in the holarctic region: boreal-montane in Europe and arctic-alpine and boreal-montane in Asia and North America (Hultén and Fries 1986). In Estonia, Latvia and Gotland it achieves the NW boundary of its European scattered area (Leht and Reier 1999). In Estonia, a large, vigorous and dense population grows on alvars between Harku, Keila and Vääna, while two smaller separate populations occur at Enge and Ohukotsu (Fig.1). ...
