Ce projet a pour objet l'étude des modalités du peuplement humain du Massif Central français au Pléistocène supérieur en fonction des mutations des paléoenvironnements dues à l'impact conjugué des paléoclimats et de l'activité volcanique. Le point fort du projet est l'étude intégrée d'un système paléo-lacustre complexe (maar de Clermont). Il vise à la restitution d'un cadre plus complet pour une meilleure approche des activités humaines, en particulier l'analyse du rôle du volcanisme et de ses corrélats dans la distribution du peuplement humain, aux différentes époques.

Evolution of palaeoenvironnements between 1.5 and 0.1 Ma is first examined. Then, the problem of earliest lithic assemblages of Massif Central is discussed : evidence for artefacts older than 1,0 Ma.remains to demonstrate. According with recent discoveries, a regional model of evolution is suggested. From pebble-tools assemblages, the main stages are handaxes technology and systematic flaking, then Levallois concept. Le Massif Central est une région au potentiel archéologique fort riche mais encore très sous-exploité. Sur le devant de la scène pour la quête des origines du peuplement préhistorique d'Europe, bien connu pour ses importants gisements du Paléolithique supérieur, il a pourtant fallu attendre la dernière décennie pour y voir véritablement s'organiser l'étude du Paléolithique ancien et moyen. On ne s'étonnera donc pas de voir présenter aujourd'hui un bilan très inégal. Deux pôles géographiques concentrent l'essentiel des recherches : le Velay, riche en faunes plio-pléistocènes dans un contexte volcano-sédimentaire autorisant la mise en oeuvre de datations radiométriques et le Bourbonnais où, outre quelques bifaces acheuléens "classiques" isolés, d'abondants outillages sur galets de quartz ont été découverts, le plus souvent en surface du complexe alluvial de l'Allier.

The question of geofacts and tephrafacts was raised very early on, from the beginning of the 20th century, and various papers took the existence of natural pieces very similar to artefacts into consideration (i.e. Commont, 1909b;Obermaier, 2012;Pei, 1936;Raynal et al., 1995Raynal et al., , 1996Raynal and Magoga, 2000;O'Connor, 2007;Bertran et al., 2012;Niang, 2014;Wisniewski et al., 2014).
