One of the main tasks of the European Digital Mathematics Library project was to define a cooperation model with a variety of stakeholders that would allow building a reliable and durable global reference library, aiming to be eventually exhaustive. In this paper we present the EuDML external cooperation model and the business plan as the basis for its sustainability and further development.

The EuDML metadata schema, version 1.0

After an extensive study of the metadata policy of each of its con-tent partners, the EuDML project evaluated many different strategies and existing schemas that could store every detail faithfully, and yet reserve room for the en-hancements foreseen in the project's work plan. The framework provided by the so-called NLM Journal Archiving and Interchange Tag Suite was selected as best readily available approximation of our needs. Some modifications of it have been endorsed by the project, defining the first version of our interchange schema for heavily math-based content.

This demonstration describes the results of the first year of the EuDML project, an initiative building a new multilingual service for searching and browsing the content of existing European portals of mathematical content. We demonstrate the first versions and proofs of concept of the EuDML portal, its contents’ aggregator, and a toolset for added value.

After an overview of the worldwide mathematical journals ecosystem, we summarise some of the hopes and fears raised by the digital environment. We then review the underlying principles and main features of some of the projects launched by Cellule MathDoc that aim at settling robust foundations and giving wider access to academic mathematical research journals. In turn, they could prefigure some building blocks of the digital mathematics library, which is still to come into being.

Mathematics in Computer Science

The idea of a World digital mathematics library (DML) has been around since the turn of the 21th century. We feel that it is time to make it a reality, starting in a modest way from successful bricks that have already been built, but with an ambitious goal in mind. After a brief historical overview of publishing mathematics, an estimate of the size and a characterisation of the bulk of documents to be included in the DML, we turn to proposing a model for a Reference Digital Mathematics Library—a network of institutions where the digital documents would be physically archived. This pattern based rather on the bottom-up strategy seems to be more practicable and consistent with the digital nature of the DML. After describing the model we summarise what can and should be done in order to accomplish the vision. The current state of some of the local libraries that could contribute to the global views are described with more details. Mathematics Subject Classification (2000)00A99

... We have been facing the problem that except of a rather general and brief position papers of the Committee on Electronic Information and Communication of the International Mathematical Union there are no clear guidelines to follow. We take inspiration mainly from the French initiatives NUMDAM [3] and CEDRAM. In the first part of the project we concentrated on the retrodigitization of journals published in the pre-electronic era: we started from scanned pixels on the page. ...

... At the same time, there is still no generally accepted agreement on the mathematical search format to be used by the library systems or Google Scholar [4]. In the process of integrating existing DML into larger projects (such as, for example, the European Digital Mathematics Library (EuDML)), the solution to the problem of mathematical formulae retrieval becomes more and more relevant: without the support of mathematical search, the efficiency of DML is significantly reduced [5]. ...

... The most used Dublin Core metadata fields, i.e. the set title, creator, subject, description, publisher, contributor, date, type, format, identifier, source, language, does not fit specific requirements for mathematics. Therefore EuDML created a unified metadata schema [3], [11], [25] based on the framework provided by the Journal Archiving and Interchange Tag Suite (JATS) [27]. Three levels of metadata have been identified. ...

Just for the case of France I tried to list the various sources of DML-related material in [4], which is a long list, although the material that is likely to end up in a system like EuDML is limited to that from NUMDAM [21], Gallica-Math [18] (which is already there), TEL [26], and Gallica books [19]. ...
