The limiting factors in the manufacture of fibreglass heat-insulating mats is the drying stage. In these studies the rate of drying according to various methods and combinations of methods was investigated. The most effective were found to be microwave drying and a combination of contact, infrared and convection drying. In further studies on the drying of mats on a paper machine, a moisture content of 13% was obtained by dewatering on suction rollers, drying on a cylinder, then convection drying. To obtain a moisture content of 5%, a 60-kW infrared dryer has to be installed.
